Christmas on Main, presented by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Parkesburg. The event will feature a community tree-lighting ceremony, open houses at local businesses, craft vendors and an appearance by Santa Claus. During the event, shops will offer in-store holiday specials, and they will host local craft vendors and artisans at their locations. Street parking will be available. “You can walk the street and go shop to shop,” said PAC member Jenn Rice. “It’s a community-building good time.” The 22 BBQ food truck will be on hand, and there will be roaming Christmas carolers. The Parkesburg Grinch is also scheduled to make an appearance. Santa Claus will be stationed at the Little Shop Next Door, 215 Main St. Letters to Santa that children write at home can be dropped off at Rocco & Anna’s Ristorante Italiano, 302 Main St., Parkesburg. Children can also take part in a craft-making activity at Main St. Café Grill, 321 Main St. The tree-lighting ceremony will take place at the corner of Main Street and Strasburg Road at 6 p.m. This year, the public is being asked See Christmas on Main pg 2

n the spirit of holiday giving, the community is invited to donate pet items, including canned and dry pet food, cat litter and chew toys, for donation to Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR). Donation boxes have been placed at the Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg; Atglen Public Library, 121 Main St., Atglen; and ESthetics & Stoury’s, 322 Main St., Parkesburg. The holiday pet supply drive began on Nov. 13 and will run through Friday, Dec. 15. The drive is being organized by Cate Westbrook, the administrator of the Daily Parkesburg Facebook group. “I’m an animal lover. I have two dogs, and they are my everything,” she said. “I thought it would be a nice way to help out a little and collect the things that (LDAR) needs.” After coming up with the idea to hold the pet supply drive, Westbrook contacted April Brade of Parkesburg, an LDAR volunteer, who directed her to the rescue’s wish list. Items on the list include Purina Pro Plan high protein puppy food, chew toys for small dogs, Greenies dental treats, CRAVE grain-free adult dry dog food, Pedigree Dentastix, Meow Mix dry cat food, Kong Extreme dog toys, dog leashes, cat litter and litter pans, trash bags, cat scratch pads, disinfecting wipes and puppy pads.

LDAR is a Chester County-based no-kill, foster-based, all-volunteer animal rescue that is dedicated to rescuing homeless, abused or unwanted animals. For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, visit www.luckydawganimal rescue.com or www.facebook.com/ LuckyDogAnimalRescue. “I don’t think they get the recognition or the funding (the larger rescues receive),” said Wentworth when explaining why she chose LDAR as the beneficiary of the supply drive. “They rescue the mutts - the kind of dogs that not everyone is looking for.” Elizabeth Shepherd, owner of ESthetics & Stoury’s, said that it is important to support the work of local animal rescue groups, especially during the holiday season. “We want to help animals. They don’t have a voice, so we can speak for them,” she said. Westbrook began the Daily Parkesburg Facebook group in 2021 as a way to promote events and businesses in the area. People are invited to join the group to learn more about the community. It is not necessary to be a resident of Parkesburg to join. For more information about the pet supply drive, email daily parkesburg@gmail.com. A poster about the supply drive can be found on the “Parkesburg Free Library” Facebook page under “Photos.”

Chester County department seeks input The Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services is seeking input from everyone who lives or works in Chester County - especially those affected by opioids personally or professionally - to prioritize how Chester County’s opioid settlement funds will be used to address the opioid and overdose crisis facing the county. The $19.7 million in opioid settlement funds earmarked for Chester County are part of the $1 billion-plus allocated to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over 18 years from a 2021 lawsuit settlement. The lawsuit

held several opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacy chains accountable for alleged wrongdoing related to the marketing, sale and distribution of opioids. The county’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Services will administer the funds for Chester County. The Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services has partnered with Capacity for Change LLC to conduct the brief, confidential and anonymous survey, which is open through Thursday, Nov. 30. Take the survey at www.chesco.org/ opioidsurvey.

“Do I like Christmas?” asked Carl Kosko, proprietor of the Inn and Spa at Intercourse Village. In answer to the rhetorical question, Kosko added, “My shed is full of Christmas. Christmas lights are everywhere, and wreaths are hung.” Like fellow members of the Village of Intercourse Merchants Association (IMA), Kosko is preparing for the holiday season. This year, IMA is planning the 26th annual Intercourse Village Holiday Celebration for Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2. Both traditional activities, such as the Shepherds Walk, and new events, including a Christmas Cookie Tour, are planned over the two-day period. According to Mike Sensenig, one of the organizers of the event, activities on Dec. 1 will focus on Center Street with local Boy Scouts lining the street with luminarias. “That’s a fundraiser for the Intercourse Library,” said Sensenig, who noted that local businesses are sponsoring the luminarias. At 6 p.m., activities will kick off at the library at 31 Center St., Inter-

course. “Santa will come on a fire truck,” said Sensenig, adding that other fire trucks will also be on display and that the Gordonville Fire and Ambulance ladder truck will offer rides. The tree lighting will be held at the library immediately following Santa’s arrival, and a Pequea Valley High School choral group will sing carols. Light refreshments will be served, and Sensenig noted that local restaurants will extend hours that evening for the event. On Dec. 2, a number of events are planned at Kitchen Kettle Village, including the Brave Sounds singers at 10 a.m., visits with Santa beginning at 11 a.m., and s’mores making and activities for children beginning at 11 a.m. Activities on Dec. 2 will also include strolling carolers at Smucker Village at 9:30 a.m., the Old Country Store at 10:15 a.m., and the Old Candle Barn at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m., the first IMA Lodging Christmas Cookie Tour, which will benefit The Factory Ministries, will begin. The tour is the brainchild of Kosko, who had heard of a similar event as part of his association with a bed-andbreakfast group. Four local

properties are joining in this year taking part. The Inn at Kitchen Kettle, the AmishView Inn and Suites, and the Best Western, and Kosko’s Inn and Spa will offer a view into the holiday décor at each stop, along with cookies to taste. “There’s a contest where you vote for your favorite cookie,” said Sensenig, who added that the winning cookie will then be featured at Stoltzfus Meats and Deli in January. “(The cookie tour) has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun,” said Sensenig. Tickets are necessary to take part in the tour. Readers who wish to obtain tickets may search for “Inter-

course Merchants Association Christmas Cookie Tour” on Eventbrite or visit https:// tinyurl.com/bdf2ht7p. The Shepherds Walk, which returned last year, will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Ten Thousand Villages in Kitchen Kettle Village. Local children are invited to dress as shepherds and take part. The walk will proceed to the Old Candle Barn, where live Nativities will be held at 6 and 6:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, readers may call 717-768-8926. #iGiveCatholic initiative announced The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is partnering with the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia to participate in #iGive Catholic for the fourth year in a row. #iGiveCatholic is nationally recognized as the official Catholic giving day. It is celebrated annually on #GivingTuesday, which follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, and will fall on Nov. 28 this year. The advance giving phase will take place through Monday, Nov. 27. Last year, #iGiveCatholic raised more than $1.5 million for 102 Catholic parishes, schools, and charitable ministries within the five-county archdiocese. This year, 169 organizations are signed up to participate in the #iGiveCatholic initiative, including all 15 archdiocesan high schools, which is the most to ever sign up. Sponsors are providing prize incentives for all participating organizations, giving them an opportunity to raise extra funds through #iGiveCatholic. To make a gift to a participating organization, visit https://philadel phia.igivecatholic.org. For more information on #iGiveCatholic, visit www.igivecatholic.org.
