Acommunitytree-lighting ceremony, open houses at local businesses, craft vendors and an appearance by Santa Claus are just some of the activities that will be featured during Christmas on Main. The event, which will be presented by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Parkesburg.
Participating shops on Main Street will host local craft vendors and artisans at their locations.
“Businesses will donate space in their stores for craft vendors who don’t have their own buildings,” said PAC member Tina O’Connor.
“The road won’t be closed like it is during Final Fridays, so crafters will be inside.”
Participating businesses will also offer in-store holiday specials and bargains during the event. “Everybody Plays! and the
Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission will host a takehome ornament table,” O’Connor noted. There will also be a food truck on-site and roaming Christmas carolers.
Children will be able to write letters to Santa at the Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg. Letters to Santa that children write at home can be dropped off at the library or at Rocco & Anna’s Ristorante Italiano, 302 Main St., Parkesburg.
The tree-lighting ceremony will take place at the corner of Main Street and Strasburg Road at 6 p.m. Santa will be on hand during the event. The live tree has been donated by Al and Kelsey Demsky from AWD Holdings, 3852 Upper Valley Road, Parkesburg. The community tree will remain lit throughout the holiday season.
This year, the public is being asked to help decorate the tree on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. Ornaments will be provided.

The Parkesburg Lions Club recently listed the results of its recent Halloween parade and announced its annual holiday decorating contest.
The Halloween parade, held on Oct. 29, began at the A. Duie Pyle parking lot and proceeded down First Avenue, ending just past the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD). The recently formed Octorara Leo Club served as the parade grand marshal and also collected food for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard along the parade route.

Holiday Festivities Planned In West Chester
Historic downtown West Chester will transform into a wonderland aglow with thousands of lights during Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester from Saturday, Nov. 26, to Monday, Jan. 2, 2023.
Presented by the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, this initiative is a monthlong celebration featuring dozens of immersive experiences intended to delight visitors from throughout the region as they enjoy West Chester’s businesses, culture and people.
The West Chester Christmas Parade will take place on Friday, Dec. 2. The festivities will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with the official lighting of West Chester’s 25-foot-tall Christmas tree on the lawn of the
Historic Chester County Courthouse. The parade will step off at 7 p.m., featuring Santa, award-winning floats with local flair by Chester County designers, and performances by music groups, including nationally recognized area marching bands. 6ABC’s Adam Joseph will be the master of ceremonies.
A host of other activities will also be available during Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends in West Chester. Entries will be displayed in the Professional Gingerbread House Competition featuring local artisan bakers, and there will be photo opportunities with Santa at the Square. Every Saturday through Dec. 17, people may enjoy the free Making Spirits Bright Holiday Music Series on the steps of the courthouse and Santa’s cruise-through on a classic fire truck.

In conjunction with Christmas on Main, there will be a toy drive to benefit local families in need. “People are asked to drop new, unwrapped toys at any storefront on Main Street during business hours through Dec. 2,” said O’Connor. “All the gifts will be wrapped and placed under the tree. After the tree lighting, any family that needs a toy can receive one.”
PAC volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance with the toy distribution. No registration or proof of income is required. Adults may collect one toy per child. Leftover toys will be given to local charities.

Taking the Best of Show award was the Jurassic Park float by Jake Armor. First place in the adult division (over age 16) were Joe and Armena Seymour, who were dressed as Groot and Gamora.
Jimmy Dean took first place in the children’s division. “The children’s division had some stiff competition between Jimmy Dean as the mouse in a mousetrap, Jason Soley as King George and Jordon Soley as the Headless Horseman,” noted Lion Robin McKenna.
A haunted house presented by a local Junior Girl Scout Troop won first place in the group/floats division followed by a Daisy Girl Scout Troop’s barn and the Spiderman group created by Debbie Cross.
Performances were provided by Russell Baton & Dance Groups, which won first place, along with the Avon Grove Charter School Dance Troupe.
“It was thrilling to have five fire companies be a part of the parade this year,” said Mckenna. Partici-
pants were KVFD, which won first place; Christiana Fire Company, which won second place; and Cochranville Fire Company, which won third place. Other fire companies represented at the event were the Westwood Fire Company and Sadsburyville Fire Company.
“As always, the Octorara Area High School band did a fabulous job,” McKenna added.
The Parkesburg Lions Club also organized a Trunk or Treat for children
following the parade. McKenna reported that approximately 300 children visited the decorated trunks in Minch Park. “We look forward to doing this again next year and would love to have more local organizations and businesses participate,” she said.

Judges from the Parkesburg Lions Club, Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission and the Octorara Leo Club will circulate through town judging the registered homes in the community on Friday, Dec. 16.
Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners. The homeowners will have a wooden stake decoration placed in their yard indicating they are a winner. Photos of all of the winners will be posted on the club’s Facebook page at the conclusion of the contest.

First Responders Complete Leadership Program
Eighteen Chester County first responders receive certification from a leadership program on Oct. 21. They were honored at a gathering in East Windsor, N.J. Pennsylvania’s inaugural class is among the newest graduates of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) Command and Leadership Academy, which was brought to the Chester County Government Services Center in 2022 through Southern Chester County Regional Police Department Chief Gerald Simpson and Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox.
For 13 weeks, law enforcement and emergency first responders from Chester, Bucks, Lancaster, Montgomery, and Delaware counties, along with law enforcement officers from Cecil County, Md., undertook rigorous training inspired by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Academy participants studied leading theory and current best practices in four primary areas - becoming a leader, motivating personnel, leading groups and managing environmental factors and outside influences. They applied those lessons and self-examination of their current methods and motivations as they grappled with real-life situations. For example, one program module focused on the power of listening. 4-H Event To Highlight Campfire Cooking
On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Chesco 4-H Outdoors Club will make a meal over an open fire at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. This outdoor adventure, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is one of several planned activities of the new club.

Program would like to invite families interested in outdoor activities to explore outdoor cooking firsthand at the event. Participants will make a campfire, build a Buddy Burner, and practice camp knife and campfire safety while making a campfire meal. Families should come prepared for the weather. Activities will be
indoors as well as outdoors regardless of the weather.

Activities Planned For Prekindergartners
The Octorara Area School District will offer monthly Play and Learn sessions and Saturday morning open gym and story times at the Octorara Primary Learning Center, 228 Highland Road, Suite 1, Atglen. Children ages 3 to 5 who are not yet in kindergarten may participate in activities, which will
include stories, music and movement. Information about kindergarten readiness will be provided to caregivers.
Play and Learn sessions will take place on Mondays, Nov. 7 and Dec. 12, from 2 to 3 p.m. Story times and open gym activities will be available on Saturdays, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17,
from 10 to 11 a.m. Additional sessions of all of these activities will be scheduled in the spring, as well.
