SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive Christmas On Main Set In Parkesburg BY FRANCINE FULTON
Kevin Salada, a Navy veteran, helped the Christiana and Parkesburg Lions Clubs last year by stopping by the post office to drop off boxes that the clubs collected as part of the Adopt a Soldier Project

he Parkesburg and Christiana Lions Clubs are once again participating in the Adopt a Soldier Project. As part of the program, boxes filled with gifts and personal care items are being sent to a battalion of soldiers that is serving overseas. Boxes will be mailed to the unit in time for Christmas. Past Lions district governor Nany Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier
T
Project, said that the packages collected locally will be sent to an address that was provided by a Pennsylvania state command officer at Fort Indiantown Gap. “Their names cannot be released due to security reasons and they are in a remote area away from any services at all,” she noted. “They are protecting a highly volatile area overseas, and all of the service members are men and women from Pennsylvania.” Gauthier is collecting the boxes at her home in Parkesburg and
fellow Lions Club members and friends will prepare the boxes for shipping. “Last year we were fortunate enough, with the help and generosity (of the community), to be able to ship out 93 boxes,” she noted. To adopt a soldier, community members are asked to fill a box and to donate the $15.05 needed for postage. “The box needed is a priority mail medium-size flat-rate box the square-shaped one,” explained Gauthier. “You can get the box from the post office.”
Items that should be placed in the boxes include food/snacks, such as hard candy, beef jerky, trail mix, sunflower seeds, crackers and travel-size peanuts; toiletries, such as baby wipes, lip balm, travel-size soap, shampoo and hand lotion; and miscellaneous items, including puzzle books, magazines, board games, handheld video games, decks of cards and DVDs. The boxes should be unsealed. “The boxes need to be inspected for customs to ensure they don’t have any restricted items,” said Gauthier.

“Businesses have been generous to give space in their stores for small vendors who don’t have their own building - artists, crafters and (people who make) handmade gifts,” said Alexander. “There is this really great spirit going on in Parkesburg of small businesses supporting other small businesses. With shutdowns, it’s been hard for everyone. The mom-and-pop shops have become the personality of the community. We want to support them to see a vibrant Main Street.” Participating businesses will also offer in-store holiday specials and bargains. “There are more businesses in downtown than people realize. This is nice way to highlight them,” Alexander said. While children will not be able to visit with Santa in person due to COVID-19, they will be able to drop off letters to Santa in special mailboxes that will be located at Rocco & Anna’s Ristorante Italiano, 302 Main St., Parkesburg, and The Little Shop Next Door, 215 Main St., Parkesburg. They did it over the summer. (As part of the activity), you take a picture of a duck you found and post it to (the ‘Parkesburg Duck’) Facebook page and re-hide it,” explained Alexander. For Christmas on Main, people will be asked to collect as many ducks as they can and return them to Experience Positive Therapy, 226 W. Members of the Parkesburg Area Business Association (PABA) have selected Judy Dougherty, director of the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC), as the 2019 Business Leader of the Year. Since PABA’s annual awards banquet was canceled in May because of the coronavirus pandemic, Allan Fellman, PABA president, recently presented the award to Dougherty in person at the OAFC. Speaking on behalf of the organization, PABA member Rachael Doyle from Shawn Doyle Training dba New Light Learning described Dougherty as a hero. “Every day this hero toils at the Octorara Area Food Cupboard to make sure hungry people and families get fed,” said Doyle. Dougherty, a Parkesburg resident, leads the all-volunteer staff at the OAFC. “Judy heads a team of volunteers that provide healthy food for hundreds of families and individuals in need each month. Like a well-oiled machine, they unpack, sort, identify and weigh all the food items that come in,” said Doyle. “They stock the shelves and work with the clients to assure an overall positive experience. Judy also works
directly with the board of directors communicating the number of clients served, the amount of food processed and the needs of the operation in general - all this with a smile on her face and love and kindness in her heart.” Fellman explained that the PABA members vote for someone they believe is deserving of the annual award. “Every year, we have the members vote on who they think helps the community and does things to promote Parkesburg in general,” he said. “Usually, we have a banquet in May at Gateway Church, and (the award winner) comes to the banquet and we pay for them and their families (to attend).” “(By visiting the OAFC), we wanted to at least show (Dougherty) that we were still honoring her, and with the food cupboard struggling right now and the holidays coming up, we wanted to give them (attention),” he added. Fellman noted that the award is not limited to local businesses owners; leaders of nonprofit organizations are included as well. “(The award) is for people that help the area. (Nonprofit leaders) are just as well deserving (as business owners),” Fellman said, noting that Dwayne Walton,

Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen recently welcomed Eric Dorville as its new senior pastor. This is his first time as a senior pastor after serving as associate pastor for the past five years. “I started feeling God’s call to move on from where I was. I was ready to become a senior pastor, he stated. “After lots of prayer and figuring out where God was leading us, I applied for the job in January. Dorville took part in an interview process that was both virtual and in-person, and he preached to the congregation during a candidating weekend. Dorville was installed as pastor on Sept. 28, after which he and his wife, Maddie, a teacher, and their children, Andrew and Eleanor, relocated to East Brandywine Township. “I had been at large churches that were busy and chaotic. This felt like a really good fit for me, he said, noting that he was impressed with the church’s interest in serving the community. “The church has a desire to be in the community and to see it and love it well. It’s one thing to go to church, but if you are not living out your faith in the community, you are not reaching your potential as a disciple of Christ. Dorville graduated from Palmer Theological Seminary in 2010. Since then, he has held numerous positions in church leadership. He served as a high school youth discipleship coordinator at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, and as an office manager and director of youth and young adults at Leverington Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Most recently, Dorville served as the

Octorara Receives Emergency Relief from the CARES monies, has already been distributed to schools. The remaining $49.8 million from ESSER was on hold, awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Education. School districts will be asked to reapply to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) once the funding announcement opens in order to get their distribution. These funds are not competitive and will be awarded as required by statute to school districts based on the average daily membership of the school district.
Eleven school districts in Chester County will receive over $2 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds, state Sen. Andy Dinniman announced on Oct. 22. Among the recipients was Octorara Area School District, which will receive $66,851. The funds, part of a $49.8 million statewide program, will help school districts with costs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2020, the General Assembly approved $200 million in funding for school entities. Of this, $150 million, which came

Lions Club To Hold Holiday Decorating Contest Parkesburg-area residents are invited to take part in the annual holiday lights/decorations contest being presented by the Parkesburg Lions Club. Judging will take place on Saturday, Dec. 19. Prizes will be awarded for first-, secondand third-place winners. Event organizers said the contest is something that people can enjoy during the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s something to do for fun. Holidays will be different this year,” noted Lions Club member Robin McKenna, one of the event organizers. “We just wanted to do something fun and community-oriented.” Residents are invited to be as creative as possible while decorating. “There are no real criteria. We have a committee, and we drive around and we decide based on (which home exhibits) the most holiday spirit,” McKenna said. “It could be something especially pretty, spiritual or that strikes people as exceptional. There will be multiple opinions. It won’t be just one person (judging).” She noted that any December holiday can be highlighted, including Christmas and Hanukkah. “The house that wo n last year was elaborate,” McKenna noted. “There were a lot of lights; they really went all out.” It is recommended that those who would like to participate in the contest call the Lions Club at 484-712-0988 or send a message via the Lions Club Facebook page, which can be found by searching for “Parkesburg Lions Club.” “ We hope to thoroughly
cover our community. However, should you want to be absolutely sure we pass by your home, please contact us,” said McKenna. She added that many of the Lions Club’s events were canceled this year, including its annual Halloween parade, so the club is grateful to be able to present the decorating
contest this year. The Lions Club, a community service organization, is currently seeking new members. Those interested in joining or learning more about the club should call the previously mentioned number, email parkesburglions@gmail.com or send a message on the club’s Facebook page.

Basketball Registration Open BY ANN MEAD ASH
Tammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, wanted to make sure area children had the opportunity to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 202021. Working together with Doug Kauffman, children’s outreach director, and other volunteers, Shondelmyer has devised a plan for the program that meets COVID-19 restrictions. “It will be a challenge,” said Shondelmyer. “There are so many parts of this to think through.” Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. Registration for the program opened on Oct. 15 and will end Thursday, Dec. 10. Registration fees will be
reduced this year, and registration will be limited to 150 players. Evaluation nights will be held on Monday, Nov. 30; Tuesday, Dec. 1; Monday, Dec. 7; and Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. each night. During the evaluation nights, the students will be sized for a jersey and asked to perform drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. First- and second-grade boys and girls play together on coed teams. Older students have separate teams for boys and girls. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, and each team will be assigned one evening a week to practice. A number of changes have been made to meet COVID-19 restrictions. “We have divided the year into two parts,” said Shondelmyer. “We are (running the program) for 10 weeks, so each (group) will play five weeks,” she explained. Boys in grades five through eight and girls in grades six through eight, will play games on Saturdays from Jan. 9 through Feb. 6. Boys in

Lions Club Aids Hurricane Victims
Parkesburg Lions Club members (from far left) Nancy Gauthier, Linda Sampson, and Jane Rice accepted donations of food items from shoppers at Dutch-Way Farm Market.
This year, many Lions clubs have offered aid to those affected by the hurricanes in Louisiana. Among the helping groups is the Parkesburg Lions Club. The Parkesburg Lions held a disaster relief collection at Dutch-Way Farm Market outside Christiana on Oct. 2. Slips listing what supplies were most needed in Louisiana were given to each shopper on his or her way into the store, and some shoppers purchased items on the list and gave them to the Lions on their way out. Many supplies and monetary donations were received. Members of one family that donated shared that they had been victims of a hurricane. A second collection drive was held the next day, Oct. 3, at Tractor Supply in Parkesburg.
As items were received, they were boxed and combined with other donation boxes collected by the Christiana Lions Club. The monetary donations were matched dollar for dollar by Lowe’s Home Improvement in Morgantown. These funds allowed for a shopping spree at Lowe’s to purchase more items needed to include in the shipment going to Louisiana. The Parkesburg Lions Club welcomes new members who would like to serve their community. The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg Baptist Church. For more information, readers may attend a meeting, contact the club via the “Parkesburg Lions Club page on Facebook, or call 484-712-0988.
