The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will hold its annual Christmas bazaar at the Gap Fire Hall on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will feature shopping
from local vendors, food items and an opportunity for children to visit with Santa.
About 20 crafters and artisans will be featured, selling items such as jewelry, woodcrafts and home décor. Home-based business vendors, including Mary Kay cosmetics and Norwex cleaning, will also offer items for sale.
“We will have hot lunches to purchase - soup and sandwiches - along with doughnuts and coffee,” said club president Steve Wenrich.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets, and Santa Claus will be on hand and available for photos.
The club has also recently started collecting plastic items as part of a recycling program offered through Trex, which allows communities to earn free benches. Attendees are encouraged to bring plastic items to the bazaar.

Tyler Remphrey, a member of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20, recently used his computer savvy to complete his Eagle Scout service project. Tyler created a digital map of the graveyard at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, located in Gap. Using a database that he created, the church leaders can now search the name and location of graves in the cemetery.
Tyler said the project was a good way to put his computer skills to use. “I have done a lot of computer stuff throughout my life, and my Scoutmaster, (Cory Peters), thought this project would be perfect for me,” he said.
He began his project by visiting the church, which has a graveyard
that dates back to the 1700s and is still used today. For years, the church kept several large paper maps and filing cabinets of papers with information on most of the graves.
“They have a lot of old (graves), including pre-Revolutionary War ones,” said Tyler. “I started by asking what information they would need and how they wanted it to look, and I did research on how I could make what they wanted a reality.”
Since the church has limited funds, Tyler found a suitable program on QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System), a free service. “It’s an open source, so people post information about it. It is a way to visualize data,” he said. “I had to teach myself how to use the program and
make the map and give the church guidance on how to use the software.”
Tyler created a Google Doc and an instructional video for each job that the church needed. He also ran two in-person sessions to help teach people at the church how to use the program.
“I gave them a framework and guidance on how to use the system I made, and they filled in the information (about the graves),” he said, noting the graveyard has nearly 3,000 graves.
A team of fellow Scouts helped the church by visiting the graveyard several times and collecting information about some of the graves. The Scouts put the information into a binder so the church’s cemetery group could put the details into the database.

Coatesville Christmas ParadeA Holiday Tradition
BY FRANCINE FULTON
At least 140 entries, including dancers, customcrafted floats, cheerleading groups, hip-hop dancers, baton twirlers and musical acts, will be featured in this year’s Coatesville Christmas Parade, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. The parade, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in December, will travel on Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), starting at Strode Avenue and ending at the performance and judging area at 11th Avenue and Lincoln Highway.
Featured performers in the parade this year will include members of the Duffy String Band and Quaker City String Band, both from the Philadelphia area, as well as the Eagles Pep Band, Lukens Band and Chester County Emerald Soci-
ety Pipe Band. There will also be an appearance by Miss Pennsylvania 2022 Alyssa Bainbridge and Carmella Mirenda, the reigning National American Miss Pennsylvania Teen, who resides in Coatesville.
A highlight of the parade will be an appearance by cartoon characters, such as the Grinch, Scooby-Do, Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee, Prince Charming and Cinderella. “We will have cartoon characters along the parade route that kids would recognize. They interact with the kids and take photos with them,” said parade committee member Marianne Scibek.
Members of the Krapf family will be honored as the grand marshal. “The Krapf family, including Dallas and Dale, run school buses and (charter) buses for the community,” said Scibek.
Special honorees will include the Caln Township
10U girls’ softball team, which won the Little League Eastern Regional title, as well as local Vietnam War veterans, who will be on a float in the parade, an effort being organized by local Boy Scout Nathan Bean as his Eagle Scout Project.
First-, second- and thirdplace prizes will be awarded for Best Appearing Float sponsored by a nonprofit organization, with one winning float sponsored by a for-profit organization. There will be a competition for Best Appearing Group, Best Appearing Fire Apparatus and Best Appearing Police Vehicle. Antique, classic and modified autos will also compete for prizes.
The parade will conclude with an appearance by Santa Claus, riding on a Coatesville Fire Department truck.
The Coatesville Christmas Parade began in the 1950s, but it was taken over as a
project by the Coatesville Jaycees in the 1970s. However, leadership disbanded a decade later. In the early 1990s, a group of former Jaycees along with other members of the Coatesville community and with the support of the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust and the City of Coatesville, decided it was time to bring the parade back to the community.
This year’s presenting sponsor is Cleveland-Cliffs, a steel plate production facility located in Coatesville, which now operates the plant formerly known as the Lukens Steel Company. The Platinum Sleigh sponsor this year is Penn Medicine, which includes Chester County Hospital and Lancaster General Health Parkesburg.

“With an Eagle Scout project, you have to have a field work phase. A lot of the graves are newer and don’t have a lot of data on them,” Tyler explained. “We went out with data sheets and went through about 100 graves or so over a course of a few days, (listing) plot number, what the gravestone is made out of (and other characteristics).”
Using the database that Tyler created, the church can now search for all of the veterans’ graves, search a specific name, click on a certain grave on the map and find out who is there and locate unsold graves, among other features.

Piercing Word rehearses for “The Advent of Christmas.”
In one word, Tim Rogers, lead pastor with Grace Point Church of Paradise, can pinpoint the impetus for the new daily devotional titled “All You Want for Christmas.” “‘Yearning,’” said Rogers. “This whole devotional sprang up around that idea. We want Emmanuel (God with us) to come. We yearn and call for that.”
“All You Want for Christmas” features writings from 25 area pastors and church and ministry members, who shared their thoughts on Christmas carols and other holiday songs to help bring deeper meaning to the holiday season. Churches that took part, in addition to Grace Point, were Gateway Church, Calvary Monument Bible Church, Hershey Mennonite Church, IMPACT Church, Keystone Church, Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Ridgeview Mennonite Church, and Pequea Baptist Church. Also involved were The Factory Ministries and ServeNow. The devotional will be available at www.youversion.com /the-bible-app starting on Thursday, Dec. 1. Those who prefer a printed version may contact jen@gracepointparadise.com. Brandon Fisher of Keystone Church provided the framework for selecting carols and other songs for the writings.
The devotional has its roots in a booklet called “Trust Me,” which the group released in 2021 with the idea of reassur-
ing area residents and beyond with the promises of God found throughout the Bible. “Trust Me” garnered close to 8,000 subscribers. For “All You Want for Christmas,” Rogers said that the group wanted to offer spiritual sustenance to the holiday season. “We felt like it could be a good way to bring value to our community and show that there is unity and hope around Christmas time,” he said.
Songs that were chosen for devotionals included both the traditional “Angels We Have Heard on High” and the more modern “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” One writer shared the story behind Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here,” written for “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
Writers who took on the assignment grappled with lyrics ranging from Fisher’s exploration of the third verse of “Joy to the World” to Pequea Baptist’s Clint Shondelmyer opting to discuss the seldomsung verse of “Angels From the Realms of Glory” that discusses judgment. Greg Petersheim of Grace Point wrote on “What Child Is This?” and pointed out the importance of God’s attention to the small and seemingly insignificant, and Audrey Kanagy of Ridgeview tackled “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” with a reference to Luke 1:78-79. Kanagy investigated the arrival of Christmas decorations and the range of feelings they can inspire from delight to disillusionment. “To believe that the
hope we have in Jesus is more than the fancy decorations and allow God’s tender mercy and grace to break into whatever we are experiencing,” said Kanagy.
Adam Nagle, director of The Factory, noted that “Away in a Manger” is really a prayer to stay close to God. “All humans yearn for that,” he said. “We don’t all feel it or experience it because, (although) God is always present, (we are) not always relationally in tune with that.”

Wesley Church Posts Craft Fair
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, will host a craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church will sell food during the event, and over 50 vendors will participate. The craft fair is free to attend, but Wesley Church requests that attendees bring nonperishable items to donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank.
Breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be prepared and sold by members of the church for a set price. The funds raised by the food sales, as well as the fee paid by vendors, will benefit the church’s discretionary fund and be used for various projects within the congregation.
Both local vendors and those traveling from other states will sell their items during the craft fair. Several handmade goods will be available to purchase, such as knitted accessories, jewelry, sewn products, kitchenware, artwork made from recycled materials, wooden crafts and baked goods. Every half-hour, a name will be drawn for the door prizes, all of which will be donated by the vendors. “I love seeing all of the creative things people come up with,” said Bonnie Aukamp, a coordinator for the event. “People
always bring the neatest things and have such great ideas.”
Wesley Church first started hosting the craft fair in 2011 and for the last five years has decided to use the event as an opportunity to collect donations for the food bank. The church will also accept donations of hats, scarves and gloves, which will be added to its “mitten tree” and distributed to those in need over the holidays.
Each year during the craft fair, Wesley Church features a specific ministry that is participating in the event as a vendor. This year, the church will highlight the Wesley Military and First Responders Ministry. “Our goal is to help active-duty members of the military and first responders in any way we can,” said Annie McCready, a member of the ministry. The group will sell crocheted items, handmade cards and knitted items at the craft fair, and all proceeds from sales will benefit the ministry directly. The ministry’s endeavors include sending care packages and Christmas cards to military personnel overseas and delivering cases of water to local fire companies and police departments.

Runners Gather For Trail Race
The eighth annual Dire Wolf Trail Race took place on Oct. 22, offering trail runners of all abilities a choice of a 5- or 10mile trail race through Wolf’s Hollow County Park in Atglen. The scenic course traveled through the woods and fields of the park and included a creek crossing, rolling hills and a 2-mile climb to the finish.
The race is held every year and is one of the largest fundraisers for the Octorara High School Cross Country and Track and Field Team Booster Club; all proceeds from the race go directly to the booster club. Students representing the booster club help with aid stations along the course as well as direct runners along the course. This year’s event raised over $1,500 for the booster club.
This year, the overall winners for the 10-mile race were Ryan Gehman, 30, with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 57 seconds, and Ashley Jackson, 24, with a time of 1:25:48. The winners of the
5-mile race were Nick Murdock, 38, with a time of 42 minutes, 4 seconds, and Bonnie Stoeckle, 66, with a time of 42:49.
The Dire Wolf Trail Race is directed by Jason Logue, president of Every Mountain Outdoors and owner of RunPA.org.

Groups Partner For Coat Drive
LCH Health and Community Services distributed more than 300 coats with the help of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation. The Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation celebrated its 15th annual New Coat Program. The local effort saw LCH partner with Concordville Subaru and Nissan.
Approximately 180 auto dealers located throughout the five-county region of greater Philadelphia were teaming up for this year’s New Coat Program. A new winter coat remains one of the most requested items via local service agencies. Through the effort, a record 58,239 brandnew winter coats were slated to be distributed this fall to children in need who reside in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Coats were to be distributed through a network of
more than 350 nearby social services agencies, YMCAs, homeless shelters, school districts, and more. LCH served the children of southern Chester County on Nov. 3.
Kevin Mazzucola, executive director of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation, noted that this was the foundation’s 15th year of participating.

Toys For Tots
Now through Wednesday, Dec. 7, local residents can purchase a toy online by visiting https://yougivegoods .com/oactep-toys-for-tots -drive-event. The website offers a variety of options for shoppers ranging from dolls and action figures to arts and craft kits and puzzles. The toys come in a wide range of prices.
All those who donate a toy will be emailed a tax receipt at the time of purchase. The toys that have been ordered online will be shipped directly to Chester County Toys for Tots at the conclusion of the drive. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com/T4T ChesterCounty.
Lisa McNamara, director of career and technical educa-
tion for the Octorara Area School District, said that the goal of the drive is to collect 200 toys.
“The students in career and technical education programs are involved in student organizations like FBLA, FFA, SkillsUSA and TSA. They always do fundraisers individually for their programs, but we wanted to do something as a large group - as an OACTEP family - to benefit children in the community,” she said. “In looking at different (options), we saw a virtual Toys for Tots, which that makes it easy and convenient (to donate).”
The students are promoting the Toys for Tots drive in their various areas of study. For example, students in the graphic design and illustration program have created flyers about the toy drive.
McNamara said she will track how many toys are donated and update students on how the drive is going. “We have 231 kids in our program,” she said. “If every kid could get at least one person (to donate) or donate themselves, (we would reach the goal of 200 toys.”
Several students have already donated toys, as have local businesses that are part of the OACTEP Occupational Advisory Committee. The committee meets with the faculty twice each year to provide input about programs offered at the school. During their visit, the businesses leaders enjoy a meal provided by culinary arts students.
“Industry partners come in and meet with the teachers and look at our curriculum, our equipment and the certifications and tell us if they meet the standards,” McNamara explained. “These kids will graduate with the most updated standards and certifications in their industries.”
The Octorara Area Career and Technical Education Programs are open to students in grades 10 through 12. Courses prepare students for careers in business, woodworking, engineering, childhood education, graphic design and illustration, culinary, law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services, computer technology, animal and plant science, agriculture, engine repair, welding and more. For more information, visit www.octorara.k12.pa.us /domain/67.
