For the past 51 years, the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) has aimed to preserve the Robert Fulton Birthplace and local heritage and to maintain the society’s growing collection of artifacts as well as family and community records. Since 1984, the SLCHS has raised funds by selling calendars that feature drawings of historical sites, buildings, and people by local artists. Stan White, president of the SLCHS, said he was excited to announce the release of the 2022 calendar. People can purchase calendars at four locations in Quarryville: Maplehofe Dairy, 799 Robert Fulton Highway; Kreider’s Market, 2396 Kirkwood Pike; Quarryville Agway, 27 E. Fourth St.; and the SLCHS’ archive building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway. The archives are open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to
noon as well as the second and fourth Saturdays during fall and winter from 9 a.m. to noon. Every year, White distributes photographs from the society’s collection to 12 local artists, who then use the photographs as reference for their drawings. All of the images that the artists used as reference this year are from the society’s new collection of photographs and documents from the Carter and Henry families. This collection was donated to the society this past April by Vicki Kay Carter. After the artists submit their finished work, the calendar committee assigns a drawing for each month and then decides which piece to feature on the front cover. The committee tries to feature the work of an artist who has not been on the cover recently. This year’s cover artist is Amy Mueller. Contributing drawings for See Calendar pg 4

group. “That’s the horsedrawn museum. That building is antique cars, and that’s the blacksmith shop,” she notes, but then she pauses to explain how strongly she believes in the message of the organization. “We are preserving America’s agricultural and industrial history because it’s really important to remember where we came from as we go forward,” Hazzard said. Not only is the Rough & Tumble Museum, which covers 33 acres along Route 30 near Paradise, working to preserve history, but it is also working to correct misinformation about the group itself. “People don’t know we’re open to the public,” explained Hazzard. “We are a membership-based, board of directors-run museum, but everyone is welcome.” Bud Burdy, current Rough & Tumble president, echoed Hazzard. “ We continually learn that no one knows we exist and that we are open to the public,” said Burdy, who is hoping to bring STEM classes, Scout troops, school groups, and others to the museum. He noted that younger people are welcome to come and learn about the 12 or so diverse groups, which include a machine shop and a large engine group, that fall under the museum’s umbrella. “It’s not just an all-boys’ club,” Burdy pointed out. “We have more and more ladies involved.” Rough & Tumble traces its roots to the 1940s, when Arthur Young, who owned a tractor business across the road from the museum’s location, organized a reunion, eventually buying the Myer Farm, which became Rough &
Tumble. The organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. A full slate is planned for 2022. On Saturday, April 23, the Antique and Classic Tractor Pull will be held. No admission will be charged, and gates will open at 8 a.m. “Our pulling committee has made some dramatic positive changes in the last five years,” said Hazzard of the kickoff event. The Spring Steam-Up will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13, and 14, with a tractor pull at 6 p.m. on May 13, and demonstrations of plowing with vintage equipment. “People love to come and watch us plow the fields with antique tractors and steam tractors,” said Hazzard. On Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, the International Harvester Club Chapter 9 will hold an event on the museum grounds, and Rough & Tumble will hold a tractor pull the same weekend. During John Deere Days, Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23, the Waterloo Boys turn the scenery special shades of green and yellow, with a Parade of Power and more. The 74th annual Threshermen’s Reunion will be held Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 17 to 20. The event features a daily Parade of Power and the Pageant of Threshing. The final event of the year is the Time of Harvest Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8. the child-focused event includes pumpkin painting, a children’s pedal pull, and a candy drop from a tall crane. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Other than the tree lighting, activities will be held indoors. “We will use fellowship hall and our Sunday school classrooms. Santa will sit at the Christmas tree in the sanctuary for pictures,” said congregation member Debbie Baldwin, event organizer. “Basically we use the whole church building.” For the craft activity, children will make baggies of “reindeer food” with a poem attached. “They will make up little bags with oatmeal and glitter in it that they can sprinkle on their lawn for Santa’s

reindeer,” Baldwin explained. The church has held a children’s Christmas program for the past six years. The event is not a church fundraiser. Rather, the activity is held to serve local families and introduce them to the church. “Everyone who came (to the Christmas event) in other years has really enjoyed it,” Baldwin said, noting that last year’s event was limited to outdoor activities because of the pandemic. “It’s a community-based (outreach). Everything is free.” The church also hosted a successful Kids’ Carnival in September. “We had 119 kids for our children’s carnival,” Baldwin noted. The Sunday service at Limeville UMC is held at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school is
offered prior to the service at 9 a.m. All services are livestreamed on Facebook. The church recently renovated its Sunday school wing, where it will begin to offer a children’s group in January 2022 for youngsters ages 3 to 12. The program will be open to all children in the community. “The kids’ program will meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.,” said Baldwin. “We are planning (to offer) singing, a Bible story and a craft.” Final details about the new youth group will be finalized this month. The public is also invited to attend Christmas Eve services at Limeville UMC on Friday, Dec. 24, at 3 and 10 p.m. For more information, call 717-442-4010 or visit www .facebook.com/LimevilleUMC.

Novelda Ferguson, and Colleen Shoemaker. “I like seeing what people come up with, with their artistic interpretations of the photographs I give them every year,” stated White. White also noted that the society is always searching for new and old photographs of historic houses, barns, vehicles, and businesses. “Our society is a great place to keep
copies of a few of your family’s pictures … a place where they may be found generations from today by your descendants,” he said. Most collections can be returned within a week after careful scanning by White, who is also the society’s digital archivist. To learn more about the SLCHS, visit www.southern lancasterhistory.org.

When Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC) was unable to host its annual Trunk or Treat event last year, the congregation’s fellowship committee, which includes Amy Rineer, Barbara Josephian, and Heather Musser, organized a Christmas event for the public. Journey to Bethlehem is a walk-through live Nativity experience that features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s palace, angels and shepherds, an innkeeper’s house in Bethlehem, and the manger. The second annual Journey
to Bethlehem will take place on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at CLPC, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. While waiting for a shepherd guide, attendees will sit in the church sanctuary, where there will be live Christmas music provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching band, the Chestnut Level instrumentalists, and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Madrigal Singers. The outdoor live Nativity will consist of about 50 characters and a variety of animals, such as sheep, lambs, and miniature horses. After walking through the live Nativity, people can go inside the Family Life Center for

veterans may have missed their regularly scheduled mammogram due to COVID-19, and woman veterans are encouraged to reach out to their VA health care provider to schedule one. Throughout the year, Lebanon VAMC offers women’s health care, including breast care services. Every VA medical center has a woman veterans program manager to ensure woman veterans have access to appropriate care and treatment. Breast care resources available through VA include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound and MRI, genetic counseling and testing, and cancer treatment. VA recommends regular breast cancer screening for women who are age 45 years and older, though some women may choose to start screening with yearly mammograms as early as age 40. Women should talk with their VA primary care provider team about what is best for them and schedule their mammogram. For more information, visit www.va.gov/lebanon-health -care/health-services /#specialty-care and click on Women Veteran Care. Individuals who are veterans may be eligible to receive care and benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. To learn more, call 717-272-6621, ext. 6000.
