Chester County’s focus on the importance of agriculture and agriculture economic development has led to a strategic restructuring and partnership with the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC). AgConnect, the Next Generation Industry Partnership originally introduced and managed by the CCEDC, has broadened its scope to not only support agricultural producers across the region, but also to provide resources and educational opportunities to Chester County consumers.
A key part of the transition will see AgConnect leading the implementation of the Chester County Agricultural Economic Development Strategic Plan, aimed at fostering growth and sustainability in the county’s agricultural sector.
Since 1989, Chester County government has promoted the economic impact and excellence of the local farming indus -
try through the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council). The Ag Council ran several agricultural programs, initiatives, and resources - such as connecting agricultural business owners with training and financingas well as produced the annual “Chester County Farm Product Guide” and awarded both the Farmer of the Year and Distinguished Service to Agriculture awards. In 2022, based on a plan developed and recommended by the Ag Council, the county commissioners adopted an Agricultural Economic Development Strategic Plan.
The AgConnect restructuring will introduce a newly established AgConnect Advisory Executive Committee, designed to steer the initiative and set strategic priorities. The 11-person committee
includes chairpersons from each of four action teams, three agriculture industry leaders appointed by the Chester County commissioners, three agriculture employers appointed by the CCEDC, and one staff member from the County Commissioners’ Office. This diverse and experienced committee will oversee the development and execution of AgConnect’s workplan, ensuring alignment with the county’s strategic objectives. To address various aspects of agricultural development, four action teams have been formed. AgConnect Workforce Development focuses on regional agricultural workforce development; AgConnect Finance is dedicated to providing farm loan opportunities and financial support; AgConnect Chester County is

Winter safety tips for drivers
The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) has posted winter safety tips for drivers.
People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.
State law requires windows and mirrors to be completely clear to improve visibility. People should also clear their car’s hood, roof, and trunk.
When driving in inclement winter weather, avoid sudden stops and starts, slow down, and increase following distance. Cruise control should never be used when driving on snow, and drivers should never crowd or pass a plow truck.
When driving in winter, it is important to have an emergency kit handy. For suggestions of what to include in an emergency kit, visit https://tinyurl.com/ WinterEmergencyKit.
In addition, the Pennsylvania State Police has offered advice for anyone
involved in a crash. People should move their vehicle as far as possible from the travel lanes if the vehicle can be driven; remaining in the lanes of travel is extremely dangerous. If a vehicle cannot be driven due to damage or if one of the involved parties is injured, Pennsylvania law requires that the crash be reported to the police. To report an accident, dial 911 right away.
If a person’s vehicle is disabled in the lane of travel or stuck in the travel lanes due to snow or ice, the person should remain inside the vehicle with his or her seatbelt on and the hazard lights activated. If it is not safe to remain inside the vehicle, people should assess the situation and get the driver and any passengers to a place of safety such as behind a barrier or guardrail. When exiting a vehicle, move as quickly as possible and do not

Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Sale will return to Quarryville
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host its annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature a variety of local vendors, and a portion of the proceeds will support the church’s ongoing community outreach and mission trips to Peru.
The Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale was created to be a consignment event that primarily featured items often regarded as more appealing to men, such as lawn care equipment, power tools and sporting goods. The idea was proposed to church leadership by congregation member Boni Henry, who noticed that most consignment events feature items that appeal primarily to women. As the only girl in her family, Boni grew up playing with the boys in her neighborhood, and she later had three sons. Boni became especially familiar to traditionally masculine hobbies and activities, and the men in her life served as the inspiration for the new event.
The inaugural Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale took place 11 years ago, and it was exceedingly well-received by the community. Boni received a wave of positive
feedback from attendees as the event continued to grow each year. Although the event still includes many vendors who sell items such as football gear, power drills and accessories for the man cave in the basement, Boni decided to open the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts sale to vendors with other types of merchandise.
“Vendors would call me and ask if they could bring jewelry or dishes to sell,” Boni

On the road again: Tips to help seniors travel safely
Travel was once a key component of the picture that working professionals created of their ideal retirements. While the COVID-19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold in recent years, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars.
Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the
high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. Such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home. The following tips may reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while traveling.

- Speak to a physician. A pre-trip consultation with a physician can uncover any issues that might arise during a trip. Health conditions may be easily managed for domestic travelers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but some issues may not necessarily be as easily navigated when traveling overseas. Physicians can also recommend vaccinations or other measures to protect one’s health while traveling. In addition, a pre-trip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that will be needed during a vacation.
- Take financial precautions as well. Of course, not all travel-related concerns are medical. Finances also require attention prior to a trip. Inflation has caused a sharp spike in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travelers
should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they take enough money. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature of travel since the onset of the pandemic has underscored the utility of travel insurance. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.
- Privately share the trip itinerary. Prior to departing, travelers should share their itinerary with friends and family members. They should avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make them a target for criminals at home and at their destination. The itinerary should include where travelers are staying, the dates they will visit certain locations and the dates of activities they will be engaging in on the trip.
Seniors rediscovering the joy of traveling can take various measures to make their trips more safe.

said. “I said ‘Sure; if we run out of space, we’ll just have to turn people away.’ But we haven’t had to do that.” Vendors who are interested in participating in this year’s event may call Boni at 717405-1113 or send an email to bohphen@outlook.com.
Twenty percent of the proceeds from vendor sales will support Middle Octorara Presbyterian’s Peru Fund, which allows the church to sustain continuous humanitarian efforts in Tamshiyacu, a village in a rural part of Peru. The Peru Fund has been used to purchase medical supplies for a hospital located near the village, including wheelchairs, items for newborns and other provisions to aid local residents during the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition to purchasing medical supplies, money from the Peru Fund covers the expenses for frequent mission trips to Tamshi -
yacu. During past mission trips, volunteers from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church completed renovation projects such as repainting homes in the village, which are often in need of restoration due to the proximity to the river and the region’s often-severe weather. This year, Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church also used the Peru Fund to help a man named Villa, the church’s liaison in Tamshiyacu, to acquire an adequate
amount of property for housing. “We’re really glad to be able to help Villa,” Boni said. “He’s our righthand man down there.”
The church’s next mission trip will take place in March 2025, and the initiative is helmed by Boni’s husband, Dan Henry. Dan’s brother, Dave Henry, is a retired pastor who resides in North Carolina, and the two men typically recruit volunteers for mission trips from both of their respective congregations.
The church is always accepting volunteers to support its efforts in Tamshiyacu. To learn more about becoming a volunteer, call Dan at 717-381-9947.
