Freedom Life (FL) Church will kick off 2024 with Freedom Nights - three consecutive nights of revival services on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Jan. 3, 4 and 5, 2024, beginning at 7 p.m. at Freedom Life’s main campus, 447 Noble Road, Christiana. The events will feature upbeat worship, biblical teaching and special guest speakers. The community is invited to attend the services, especially newcomers to the church. “We want to kick off the year and dedicate the first part of it to the Lord and bring people together for worship and encouragement to set the course for the year,” said Angie Dearolf, FL communications director. Israel Campbell will be the featured speaker on Jan 3. Campbell co-leads Flourishing Church with his wife, Rachel, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Campbell is also author of “The Art of Sonship.” Campbell’s messages are known for their humor and practicality. Featured on Jan. 4 will be Josh Payne, who co-leads Victory Church with his wife, Marcia, in a rural area of Troy, Pa.

As part of the PAWS for Reading program at Atglen Public Library (APL), children may read to a trained therapy dog on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children, who may register for a 15-minute session, can bring a book from home or choose one from the library. On Dec. 12, Penny, a 9-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, was on hand at the library with her handler, Angela Pruss of Oxford, who is a high school guidance counselor. The pair also visits the North East Library and the Elkton Library, both located in Cecil County, Md. The idea behind the program is to allow children to read in a stress-free environment. “She is a nonjudgmental listener,” said Pruss. “I tell the kids that if they struggle with reading, (Penny) can’t read at all, so she doesn’t mind.” She said that Penny’s size may be intimidating to children but that once they get to know her, the fear goes away. “She is a big, beefy dog, but she is very sweet and gentle,” said Pruss. “Some of the kids are apprehensive, but

The 90-minute program will include games, activities, crafts, snacks and fun music. “The kids will have a blast learning Bible stories that still apply to our lives today,” said FL Kids director Gina Turk. “Families love to have a program for the kids - so it’s an event for the entire family,”

Dearolf added, noting that the revival has been held for the past several years. “We do get a good response, and people are excited to start things off in the new year on the right foot. Pruss first completed a series of classes with her golden retriever, who passed away before the pair could go out to work in the community. “I really enjoyed the process and was looking forward to doing the work with PAWS, so I decided to take Penny,’ she said. “She is a laid-back, very compliant and lovely kind of dog. She is calm and nothing fazes her.” She said that Penny is still able to help others even though she came from an abusive situation. “We adopted her when she was 7 years old through Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue. She a was breeding momma (in a puppy mill) and they were trying to get rid of her (because she could no longer give birth to puppies),” Pruss explained. “We were approved as a foster home, and my husband got her right off the farm for a foster-to-adopt.” Penny had cancerous tumors on her mammary glands but has successfully recovered from surgery, although she is missing an ear because she also had a tumor in her ear flap. “We

2023 was 2nd Lt. McKayla Mickel, who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy on June 1 and was recognized for her accomplishments by Atglen Borough Mayor Darren Hodorovich. Mickel, a 2019 graduate of Octorara Junior-Senior High School, is stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii. Local organizations that were active in 2023 included the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC). PAC started the first Parkesburg Farmers Market in July, and it continued on the second Saturday of each month through October. Held outdoors at Parkesburg Borough Hall, the market offered items such as fresh produce, flowers and plants, jewelry and furniture. Plans call for the farmers market to continue next summer. PAC also holds a Final Friday street fair throughout the summer, and most recently, PAC held Christmas on Main, a holiday shopping event. Everybody Plays! continued its work to create a playground in Parkesburg’s Minch Park that would be accessible to children of all abilities. The group continues to fundraise and plans to hold a groundbreaking for the new playground at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. Members of the Christiana Historical Society were also busy in 2023 renovating the Brinton House, which is the site of its future headquarters. It held several events on the grounds of the new location, including an Easter program in March and a holiday program as part of Christmas in Christiana. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Dec. 9. Once completed, the building will be used by the society to host its meetings and showcase its artifacts and memorabilia. In addition, it will provide additional space for its annual open house on Sept. 11, which commemorates the Christiana Resistance. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in July by members of Freedom Life Church at a vacant property along Route 41 and Zook Road in West Sadsbur y Township. The ceremony

Buffalo wings recipe for the big game

Football season heats up each January, when fans of both college football and the professional game look forward to each sport’s respective playoffs. Many people hold game watch parties, which not only provide an opportunity to view the big game, but also offer social time and food. The following recipe for “Grilled Buffalo Wings,” courtesy of cookbook author Katie Lee Biegel and The Food Network, may fit nicely in the game day spread. Grilled Buffalo Wings Yields 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 pounds whole chicken wings 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup hot sauce 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine the salt, pepper and garlic powder. In a large bowl, toss the wings with the salt mixture to evenly coat. 2. Preheat a gas grill to medium heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Place the wings on the grill, crowding them together so they are all touching. This method goes against the conventional wisdom of giving meat room so it does not steam. In this recipe, the meat should steam so it stays moist. Grill, flipping the wings every 5 minutes, for a total of 20 minutes of cooking. 4. In the meantime, heat the butter, hot sauce, vinegar, and honey in a saucepan over low heat and whisk to combine. 5. In a clean, large bowl, toss the wings with the sauce. Turn the heat up on the grill to medium-high. Use tongs to remove the wings from the sauce and put them back on the grill until the skins crisp, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Put the wings back in the bowl with the sauce, toss and serve.
