TRun to benefit cancer research

he 12th annual Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, in Mount Gretna. This annual event consists of a 5K, a 5-mile course, and a 10-mile course. Runners and walkers can choose their distance.

There will be a pre-run warmup. All courses will start on Timber Road, which will be closed to traffic, and traverse the rail trail. Only the 10-mile runners will cross a public road. Portable toilets will be available on both the 5- and 10-mile courses.

Door prizes will be awarded, and giveaway drawings will be held for gift baskets, including a romantic getaway, a stock car racing experience, a massage package, a date night package, a golf package, an Amazon fitness tracker, a tool set, a martini-focused basket, and a Hershey board game basket. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Food trucks will be on hand, including new vendor Smoky Flavors BBQ from Lancaster. A bake sale will be held, and anyone interested in contributing baked goods may contact the organization using the form at https:// bloodsweatandtearsfivemiler .weebly.com.

CBS meteorologist Tom Russell will serve as master of ceremonies. Russell has served on the board of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

In addition, the Mt. Gretna Fire Company will hold a car show adjacent to the run as a fundraiser for its organization. The fire company will also supply the fire police and portable toilets for the run.

All proceeds from the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run will benefit the Emily Whitehead Foundation. The central Pennsylvania-based organization is named after Emily Whitehead,

who in 2012 became the first child to be treated for cancer using her own re-engineered T cells to fight her leukemia. This highly experimental treatment for Whitehead’s leukemia saved her life, and with the help of the foundation, it has received FDA approval and is now used around the world to help save the lives of both children and adults. The foundation continues to fund new and emerging advanced therapies in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Whitehead just finished her first year at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and she continues to attend medical conferences to share her story and inspire others. Her story is told in the documentary “Of Medicine and Miracles” by Academy Award-winning director Ross Kauffman, and she is featured in the new IMAX documentary “Superhuman Body,” narrated by Matthew McConaughey.

Once again this year, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Run is dedicated to the memory of Mike McCauley, an ultramarathon runner who was passionate about ending pediatric cancer.

Online registration will be available through Saturday, Sept. 7, and T-shirts and fanny packs are guaranteed for those who register by this date. Registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, with T-shirts available while supplies last.

For more information and to register, visit the aforementioned website. Information is also available by searching for “Blood, Sweat & Tears Run” on Facebook. Sponsorships are available; for more details, email tgarrett7@ msn.com.

The foundation held its annual sporting clay shoot fundraiser at the Hummelstown Field and Stream Association on Aug. 17.

The email from the Witmer family to David S. Thompson, Paradise Township manager, said that the family wanted to donate two youth-sized picnic tables in memory of their son, Zane. “We can create an environment for families to make lasting memories together. We hope that this donation will enhance the overall park experience and bring joy to all who visit,” the family stated.

The tables were readily accepted for placement in the park on Aug. 7. “I’m inspired by your motivation to transform grief into a positive and lasting impact,” wrote Thompson in response.

On Aug. 7 at 11 a.m., the Witmer family - David and Jennifer and their children David Jr. and Caitlyn - met with Paradise Park manager Adryan Yothers at the park, 6 London Vale Road, Paradise. Two youth-sized picnic tables were stacked in a blue trailer painted with web addresses for the Zane A. Witmer Memorial Foundation. Father and son removed the two tables, which were placed on the corners of a playground adjacent to one of the park pavilions. “We were last here (in the park) in 2017,” recalled Jennifer, who noted that David Jr. was part of the Scouting program that met in a building in the park. “We would come down here to play.” Jennifer recalled the family taking part in the annual Easter egg hunt held in the park, as well. The family has placed 14 picnic tables in area parks, including tables in Strasburg

The Witmer family lost its youngest son, Zane, age 2 and a half, in August of 2017 in Fort Myers, Fla. Jennifer explained that while the Witmers were moving a family member to a new home, Zane disappeared. David later found the toddler in the pool. Zane died at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers. Following Zane’s death, the family founded a nonprofit organization with the mission of raising awareness of and preventing childhood drowning. “We do water safety education in the community,” explained Jennifer, noting that the foundation offers life jackets for area residents to borrow. “I am certified to teach survival swim lessons,” she stated. “I teach babies from six

months to self-rescue.”

Each fall, the family loads the trailer with donations for the hospital where Zane died. “(Zane’s) birthday is Nov. 21, so every year on his birthday, we take 1,121 blankets to the hospital where he passed,” explained Jennifer.

A yearly golf outing helps to fund foundation activities. The third annual tournament will be held at Fairview Golf Course, 2399 Quentin Road, Lebanon, on Friday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and a buffet luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. Jennifer said that the organization is looking for golfers to take part in this year’s event by registering at https:// becauseofzane.org. More information about the organization may also be found by searching for “Because of Zane” on Facebook.

Gretna Music to present chamber music and more

Gretna Music will present concerts by Concordian Dawn on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m.; the Tesla Quartet with pianist Joel Fan on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m.; and the Manhattan Chamber Players on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. The concerts will be held at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

Each concert will be preceded by a First Listen program. The series offers free, 20-minute mini concerts by students. On Aug. 25, oboist Lydia You will present a mini concert at 6:45 p.m., and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The other two First Listen programs will be held at 2:15 p.m. with doors opening at 2 p.m.; the performers will be violinist Mio Amai on Sept. 1 and cellist Isabel Morales on Sept. 7.

Concordian Dawn specializes in 12th-century through 14th-century vocal repertoire.

The Tesla Quartet and Joel Fan will perform String Quartet No. 4 by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz; Quintet for Piano and Strings by Sophia Gubaidulina, which pays homage to Dmitri Shostakovich; and Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G Minor, a five-movement work.

The Manhattan Chamber Players’ program will

feature Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.” The group will also perform three other works: “Adagio” by Samuel Barber, “Ciaccona (Clarinet Quintet)” by Chris Rogerson, and Piano Quintet by Andrea Casarrubios.

The Tesla Quartet consists of Ross Snyder and Michelle Lie on violin, Edwin Kaplan on viola, and Austin Fisher on cello. The group’s ever-expanding repertoire ranges from contemporary works to established masterpieces. The quartet seeks to amplify underrepresented voices and to encourage the proliferation of an equitable and just future for society as well as a hospitable climate for posterity.

Fan is known for his virtuosity and his wide-ranging repertoire that embraces piano classics along with contemporary and world music. He has made numerous recordings.

The Manhattan Chamber Players is a chamber music collective of New Yorkbased musicians who share the common aim of performing the greatest works in the chamber repertoire at the highest level. Formed by founding artistic director Luke Fleming, the group includes musicians who come from the tradition of music making at the Marlboro Music Festival, Steans Institute at Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Yellow Barn and Kneisel Hall chamber music festivals, and Perlman Music Program. Many of the group’s members are former students of the Curtis Institute, Juilliard School, Colburn School, New England Conservatory, and Yale School of Music.

Assistance available to veterans

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) encourages veterans who need assistance with locating their lost DD Form 214 (DD-214) and other military documents to contact the DMVA so they can get credit for time served and receive veteran benefits they have earned.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. armed forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and mem -

bership in veterans’ organizations. Without this key document, a veteran could experience significant delays when seeking benefits earned through his or her military service.

The DMVA can also assist with locating the DD-215, which is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214, helping to ensure that veterans have accurate discharge documentation.

Over the past fiscal year, the DMVA has responded to total of 790 requests and nearly 1,100 phone calls for assistance with finding military records.

The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid having to

frantically search for them is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. The DD-214 can be filed at one’s county courthouse.

Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate a DD-214 or DD-215 or other military documentation may call 800-5472838 or email RA-REQ@ pa.gov. More information can also be found at www .dmva.pa.gov/Veterans/ HowToGetAssistance/Pages/ RecordsRequests.aspx.

Veterans, family members, and people who work with veterans may sign up for the DMVA’s Veterans Registry by visiting www .register.dmva.pa.gov.

CHALC honors homeschool graduates

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) honored 47 homeschooled seniors during its 28th annual graduation ceremony on May 24.

The ceremony was held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church and included musical performances by members of the senior class, a commencement speech from the keynote speaker, a video collage of the graduates, a speech from a graduate, and the awarding of diplomas by parents.

The keynote address was given by Brandon Gilanyi, dean of students and high school humanities teacher at Firm Foundations Academy (FFA), a homeschool hybrid program. He is also the associate pastor at All Saints Church in New Holland. Next year, at FFA, Gilanyi will introduce a new gap year program for students called the Vision and Vocation Institute (VVI). The goal of the program is to connect local businesses to future entrepreneurs while helping young adults navigate their vocational calling.

Eden Troyer was chosen as the class speaker. Eden, the daughter of Jeff and Robin Troyer, earned a

Mason Dixon diploma. In the fall, Eden plans to attend Lancaster Bible College to study Christian thought in the humanities with a concentration of writing and rhetoric.

The graduates performed “Holy Forever” as their class song. Their class Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 15:58.
