ALibrary is spot to know, place to go, space to grow

public library not only reflects the character of its community; it reveals it. If indeed a community is as strong as its library, then Palmyra is in pretty good shape.

The Palmyra Public Library (PPL) serves its residents as a safe space offering varying resources and programs and as a community hub. Over the 70 years of

its existence, the local library has changed and evolved to meet Palmyra’s growing needs.

“Our broad mission is to bring people together to enrich lives and build community,” said Chelsea Weibley, who’s been PPL’s executive director for eight years. “The library’s not just for literacy or reading. Public libraries provide this free place for all. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. You can come here, and we can provide education resources and entertainment resources.

We want to see ourselves as a community center.”

Located at 50 Landings Drive, Suite B, Annville, PPL is so much more than stacks of books.

The library also offers free Wi-Fi, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, themed preschool kits and access to

newspaper archives.

In addition, PPL is home to children’s, family and adult programs and activities like Smart Start Story Time, themed preschool classes, summer programs for school-age kids, a genealogy club, craft groups, a Finding Independence Through Technology learning program and even a strength and stretching course.

“We try to offer a whole variety of programs to connect with all

the community’s needs,” said Weibley. “It’s fun to see people connecting through the programs. Most of the people who are coming to the library are from Palmyra Borough, North Londonderry Township and South Londonderry Township. Because of where we’re situated, we also get a number of families from surrounding areas. It’s a really neat place to see a cross-section of the community.”

In 2023, PPL hosted 110,071 total visits and lent 132,016 items.

“The favorite part of my job is helping people,” said Weibley. “I didn’t intend to work in a library, but I had a heart for helping people. I realized a public library was the place to do that. I like the variety of my job. I like helping people with anything and everything. I enjoy giving them a smile and giving them a feeling that

VisionCorps can bring life into focus

Dennis Steiner is legally blind. That doesn’t make him any more qualified to be the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of VisionCorps, but it certainly does provide him with a unique perspective and a very specific insight into the organization and its purpose.

“It does give me a perspective that others might not have,” said Steiner. “There are qualities that a CEO must have. But I don’t think blindness gives me any leadership qualities.”

“My vision tends to fluctuate,” Steiner continued. “I don’t drive a car. I take the bus to work and usually catch a ride home or use Uber. I use assisted software on my computer (to read). If I’m reading for extended periods of time, I use audiobooks. For me, I grew up with vision loss. I don’t think of my vision loss as who I am. It’s something I deal with.”

of 65. VisionCorps also administers 10,000 vision tests to preschool students in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Adams and Chester counties each year.

“I don’t think everyone is aware of the opportunities that are available (through VisionCorps),” said Steiner. “Based on census data, we know there are more people out there who could benefit from our services. Some people are reluctant to reach out, and I think part of it is fear. I don’t think anyone accepts vision loss. We like to call it adjustment.”

VisionCorps employs about 200 people in Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, as well as in Little Rock, Ark., and about half of those individuals are visually impaired.

Leading up to the event, participants are encouraged to create fundraising pages. All proceeds will support the Achieved Together Money (ATM) fund. This fund provides essential resources such as fulfilling client needs, program enhancements and supplemental technology. Vista Autism Services seeks to use datadriven approaches to improve the lives of individuals with autism and their families. The organization’s team of specialists uses personalized plans to integrate educational, behavioral health and other support services to help individuals reach their unique potential. Vista was founded in 2002 by a group of parents and professionals, and it is headquartered in Hershey. Visit www .vistaautismservices .org to learn more.

Located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, VisionCorps serves the blind and visually impaired. It seeks to enrich the lives of those who have experienced sight loss through preventative, rehabilitative, educational and employment programs and services.

“Our mission is to empower individuals with vision loss to attain independence,” said Steiner. “If people are experiencing vision loss, they should reach out. I think people need to recognize that vision loss is not the end of the world. People can live successful lives, happy lives and continue to do the things they like to do. We can have a very positive impact on people’s lives.”

VisionCorps serves about 1,500 people annually, 75% of whom are over the age

“Those of us who are vision impaired have a saying; ‘The only things we can’t do is drive a car or fly a plane, but give us the keys and we’ll try,’” said Steiner. “People say, ‘I can’t read the newspaper anymore.’ But there are a couple of ways around it. Part of our job is to teach people how to use those services.”

VisionCorps began its mission in 1926 and went through a number of name changes before settling on its current one.

“One of my staff came up with the name VisionCorps. It’s like the Peace Corps focused on vision,” said Steiner. “A lot of the organizations for the blind started in the early 1900s. We had a lot of vets returning from World War I experiencing vision loss. VisionCorps was started by a group of women who wanted to help those folks. Our focus is not about taking care of people but giving them the skills to

FIA banquets will showcase international impacts

Friends In Action International (FIA), a faith-based nonprofit organization in Middletown, will offer the choice of two different dates and venues for its annual awareness banquet. The organization exists to assist missionaries serving in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to help them share the Gospel with unreached people groups.

One banquet will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. at Lebanon Valley

Bible Church, 1482 Horseshoe Pike, Lebanon. A second, identical banquet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg.

Attendees at both locations will enjoy a dinner buffet complete with a dessert bar. The event’s theme is celebrating reaching the nations and generations for Christ. Throughout the evening, guests will see how God has combined the experience and generosity of the greatest generation with the strength and exuberance of the next generation to make frontline Gospel impacts.

At each event, the keynote speaker will be FIA’s field leader in Vanuatu, Levi Pitman, who will share stories about serving NiVan villagers living in the region. Guests will learn how FIA volunteer travelers use trade and construction skills to make progress on water projects that will bring clean water to more than 3,500 villagers.

Experienced construction owner Randy Schnieders

will share details of the work, and younger volunteers Camden Palmer and Nathan Sensenig will describe how their worldviews have been impacted by international volunteering. In addition, Paul Jarot will talk about FIA’s work in Papua New Guinea and the need for the next generation to step forward for full-time service opportunities. The banquet will also include a show of appreciation for supporters, party favors and giveaways, and recognition of retiring board members. Guests new to FIA have an opportunity to learn more by visiting the information table at the event or by speaking with staff members.

FIA recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of nonprofits. Only one-quarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status.

The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A

detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990, audited financials, and key policies, indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and financially executes its mission efficiently.

FIA also received the platinum rating - the highest rating availablefrom GuideStar, a website that presents the mission, legitimacy, impact, financial, programming, transparency, and governance information about every IRS-registered nonprofit organization. To purchase tickets for the banquets or sponsor a table of eight people by Sunday, Oct. 6, contact 717546-0208 or FIA-USA@ FIAintl.org. Registration is available at https://fiaintl .org/banquet/. FIA has announced that $50,000 in funds is available to match any money donated to the organization on the night of the banquet.
