Annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction slated
The 47th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m.
The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $19 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.
In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term
cleanup and rebuilding efforts from disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and tornadoes and floods in Pennsylvania.
Separate auctions include the main auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, two silent auctions, the heifer auction, the coin auction, and pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.
Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, as well as face painting. A balloon artist will create balloon animals for kids, as well. Also available for youngsters, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides and pony rides, the latter
of which will be offered for a nominal donation.
Food is a large part of the auction each year, with options including made-on-site Amish soft pretzels and doughnuts, a
cafeteria, food stands, breakfast, and a chicken potpie dinner.
Other components of the auction include an area for arts and crafts and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies. To find out more about the auction, visit www.brethren auction.org, call 717-823-2745, or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

Program to focus on ABLE accounts
Individuals receiving government benefits often have limits on how much money they can save before their benefits are affected.
But these limits make it difficult to save for housing, a car or educational or other goals. ABLE accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts that can fund disability-related expenses, were created to assist individuals with disabilities to overcome these barriers.
Hope Served will host an ABLE account community training program with Diana Fishlock from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. Attendees will learn who is eligible for the accounts,
how to open an account and how to utilize an ABLE account for the benefit of themselves or a loved one.
Fishlock is one of Pennsylvania’s main experts on the topic. The training will be held at Hope Served’s offices at 201 W. High St., Manheim.

Organization celebrates mentorship program
Every September, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) recognizes the impact of its programming, mentorship and matches during Big Brothers Big Sisters Month. This year, the observance is even more special as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America celebrates its 120th anniversary. BBBS has 20 million alumni worldwide.
BBBSCR kicked off its commemoration by celebrating matches at every stage. The nonprofit is putting out a call for volunteers throughout its seven-county service area. The gap between mentorship and youths who need it most continues to widen due to perceived barriers of the time and expertise needed to become a mentor.
Over the past year, BBBSCR increased the number of youths served by 53% and is in the process of expanding its service area into York and Adams counties.
Through the national “It Takes Little To Be Big” campaign, BBBSCR seeks to bring authenticity to the forefront with its

Breakfast long has been touted as the most important meal of the day. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, research shows that breakfast helps people maintain healthy weights and control blood sugar and keep it steady throughout the day. Breakfast also could be linked to heart health. A 2017 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported that people who skip breakfast are more likely to have arteriosclerosis, a condition that occurs when the arteries narrow and harden due to a buildup of plaque. People who do not eat breakfast also are more likely to weigh more and have higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels. There are plenty of nutritional breakfasts people can whip up in just a short time. According to WebMD, the basic formula for a healthy breakfast involves pairing carbohydrates with protein. The carbs give the body energy and the brain fuel, while protein provides a feeling of fullness and staying power to make it to the next meal. People may try the following options.
- Homemade energy bars: Some people reach for prepackaged cereal bars or granola bars when they are on the go. Homemade bars allow people to customize the ingredients so they eat what they like. Customization also allows people to include superfoods, like blueberries, protein-rich nuts, quinoa, or dried cherries.
- Oatmeal: Oatmeal is a breakfast staple that is full of healthy fiber. Oatmeal can help reduce cholesterol levels naturally. Turning
regular oatmeal into “overnight oats” means you can pack these parfaits with Greek yogurt, fruit, nuts, and other ingredients you enjoy.
- Avocado toast: Avocados are full of hearthealthy essential fatty acids. By mashing avocados into a paste, spreading on top of a whole-grain slice of toast, and then topping everything with a fried or hard-boiled egg, you’ll get a breakfast that includes lots of nutritional ingredients.
- Cheese and berry crêpes: When you have time, whip up a batch of crêpe shells from whole wheat flour, and then freeze or store them in the refrigerator. Fill as desired throughout the week. The combination of ricotta and tart berries provides a punch of protein and a dose of healthy antioxidants.
- Smoothies: Smoothies are a quick and nutritious breakfast. People may chop and freeze pre-measured ingredients into individual bags ahead of time, so all they must do in the morning is dump the ingredients into a blender and combine with milk, yogurt or leafy greens. Put the smoothie in a to-go cup or drink it before leaving the house.
- Quick bread: Create your own tasty quick bread that can make a fast and healthy breakfast. Include fruit, nuts, or whole grains. Banana nut bread is one option. Toast up the bread or even eat it cold. For an extra punch, top a slice with yogurt and honey.
Breakfast can be quick and nutritious, ensuring people start their day off on healthy footing.

At Sky Bridge, kids’ imagination knows no boundaries
BY JEFF FALK
Kids love to discover. Kids love to be independent. Kids love to think. Kids love Sky Bridge.
The High Foundation Sky Bridge, designed and fabricated by Luckey Climbers, is the Lancaster Science Factory’s latest hands-on exhibit for young learners. It represents the best kind of ingenuity, the kind that inspires others to be creative.
“More than learning, it’s about inspiring children,” said Amanda Bakay, the Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “When they see it and get inside of it, they start to realize they could create something like this one day. It sparks an idea like, ‘What did someone have to do to think this thing up?’”
Part jungle gym, part science project, part gateway to higher learning, Sky Bridge opened to rave reviews at Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, in April of 2023.
The $600,000 project was fabricated by construction artist and designer Spencer Luckey in his New England shop and then assembled at the Lancaster Science Factory over a three-week span.
“Sometimes kids like to see how quickly they can get to the top,” said Bakay. “It kind of looks like a giant ant farm when it’s filled with children. Sometimes kids will climb to the highest point and hang out. It’s almost like a cool
clubhouse.”
When visitors to Lancaster Science Factory round the corner from the main entrance, they are confronted with Sky Bridge, which is attached to beams on the high ceiling of the former manufacturing plant. But the massive structure does not make contact with the ground.
“We’ve always wanted to use our horizontal space, to have a bridge span over our main exhibit hall,” said Bakay. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, just because you can climb in it. It’s so accessible, and having a bird’s-eye view of the exhibit hall is so cool.”
Framed by metal and held together by thick wire netting, Sky Bridge is a series of 35 wooden panels strategically spaced throughout the structure.
Sky Bridge both stands out and fits right in with the Lancaster Science Factory’s 75 other exhibits.
“Everything we do is very hands-on and interactive,” said Bakay. “Everything we have requires you to do something and try something in a different way. Sky Bridge is like our other exhibits because it’s immersive, but there’s no beginning, middle or end. We also really don’t have anything else you can get inside and climb on.”
During 2023, nearly 71,000 individuals visited the Lancaster Science Factory, about 11,000 more than officials had projected. When those officials searched for reasons for the increase, they looked to Sky Bridge.
“It’s made a huge impact on our visitation,” said
Bakay. “(The increase) was all, or in part, because of Sky Bridge. It gave us something to talk about.”
Partly through the funding of a $1 million capital campaign, the Lancaster Science Factory, which boasts 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, opened in 2008.
“Our mission is to inspire creativity in children through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs and keep them accessible to everyone in the community,” said Bakay. “We want the facility to stay open to everyone in our community. We’ve really grown from this small science factory to a regional destination.”

Railroad Museum slates Garden Railways
Tour
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of the indoors.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will feature a self-guided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will be available after a ticket is purchased to allow individuals to plan their route in advance. A volunteer from the museum will also be stationed at each home to share information

about the museum’s programs and displays, and participating homeowners will be present to run their trains and to answer questions.
“Some homeowners incorporate water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always
Manada Conservancy plans programs
Manada Conservancy and Dauphin County Woodland Owners Association will participate in the eighth annual Walk in Penn’s Woods on Sunday, Oct. 6. The statewide event invites people to join in autumn woodland strolls.
Naturalists will lead walks at 1 p.m. in Dauphin County’s largest and newest park, Detweiler Park, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin. Two trail options with different terrain will be available. Leashed pets are welcome.
The program is free of charge. For more details and to register, visit www .manada.org. Information is also available by calling 717-566-4122 or emailing office@manada.org.
In addition, Manada Conservancy will present
“Climate Change and Penn’s Woods: What Does the Future Hold?” on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Hershey Gardens Conservancy, 170 Hotel Road, Hershey.
Greg Czarnecki, director of applied climate science with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), will share about the current and projected impacts of climate change globally, in the U.S., and in Pennsylvania. He will also describe how DCNR is adapting to minimize the impact on state parks, state forests, and the natural resources of the commonwealth.

trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”
One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain, strong wind and curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays are protected from.
In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour.
Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”
A limited number of tickets are available to purchase in the gift shop of the Railroad Museum, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Tickets will also remain available online until the start of the event. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.
