St. Luke’s to celebrate milestone with open house

As part of the Lebanon Valley Council on the Arts’ First Friday Art Walk on Oct. 4, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 22 S. Sixth St., Lebanon, will host an open house with tours and a presentation. The open house with tours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., and the presentation, at 6:30 p.m., will focus on

the architecture, renovations, and history of the current church building. This year marks the 145th anniversary of the laying of the building’s cornerstone.

The open house and presentation mark the successful completion of an extensive capital improvement project designed to improve building access and the church’s facilities.

“St. Luke’s was a gift of the Coleman family to the Lebanon community,” said Wiley Parker, chairman of St. Luke’s Capital Campaign Committee. “Keeping with that spirit, the work done reflects the generosity and commitment of St. Luke’s parishioners in making our church and facilities more accessible to the community

for all sorts of events, while preserving the priceless art and architecture of the building.”

Robert “Bob” Hoffman, principal emeritus at Beers Hoffman Architecture, will deliver the 6:30 p.m. presentation, which will explore the unique High Victorian Gothic architecture of St. Luke’s as well as showcase the

Lebanon VAMC receives recognition

Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) recently announced that it received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings and five stars from CMS’ quarterly patient satisfaction review, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (HCAHPS).

CMS Star Ratings are a ratingbased system to summarize measures of health care quality from CMS Care Compare in a way that is easy to interpret for patients and caregivers, enabling them to make informed decisions about where they seek health care. Overall, Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities were more likely in the 2024 ratings to receive four or five Overall Star Ratings and less likely to receive two or three stars than non-VA facilities.

“It’s our commitment that every eligible veteran not only can choose VA health care, but when they do, that they get the very best and safest care possible,” said VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal.

“For the second year in a row, VA care has been shown to be some of the best in the nation. We are dedicated to continuously improving as we strive toward always providing the highest quality of care to veterans.”

Nationally, VA hospitals continue to perform well on both CMS’ Overall Star Rating and its quarterly Patient Satisfaction Survey. In the most recent CMS Hospital

Maintaining older vehicles

New cars have been costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles.

Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly

without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of

the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to

Maintenance mile markers

Modern automobiles are technological marvels. As advancements in automotive technology have made cars more reliable than ever, drivers may feel as though vehicle ownership also is more hands-off than ever before. Though it’s true that built-in diagnostic technology is designed to alert drivers to certain issues, it can still benefit motorists to recognize when certain issues may arise.

Cars and the people who drive them are different, so mileage intervals are not always the best measuring stick for maintenance issues. However, the following rundown can serve as a guidebook for drivers who want to know what to expect at

various mileage intervals.

• 30,000 miles: The experts at Auto Trader note that disposable engine air filters usually last between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. If it’s been about 30,000 miles since the engine air filter has been replaced, it would be a good time to replace this important part, which prevents components like dirt and debris from getting into the engine. This also might be a good time to replace the fuel filter, which prevents debris from clogging fuel injectors.

• 50,000 to 60,000 miles: It’s about this time that drivers may need to replace their vehicle batteries. Little-used vehicles may need a new battery

much earlier, as lengthy periods of little or no use adversely affect the life expectancy of vehicle batteries. Brakes also may need to be replaced about this time, as the experts at AutoZone note that most drivers get between two and five years out of a set of brake pads. If that sounds like a significant range, it is, and that’s because driver behavior is a significant variable affecting the life of the pads. Drivers who brake hard will likely need to replace their brake pads with greater frequency than drivers who brake slowly.

• 50,000 to 90,000 miles: As noted, there is no uniform guideline governing when vehicle components will need to be replaced. Hoses are a good example of that, as recommendations regarding when to replace hoses range from 50,000 to 90,000 miles. That’s a sig -

replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often

than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil

changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul. The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

nificant range, but drivers can be on the safe side and start discussing the status of their hoses with their mechanics around the 50,000-mile marker. It’s unlikely the hoses will make it all the way to 90,000 miles before they need to be replaced, but drivers can keep that mileage marker in mind and aim to replace the hoses before that point even if no issue has arisen. Timing belts also tend to fail between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, so this is another part to consider replacing as a vehicle reaches this point.

These mileage markers are not set in stone and should only serve as a guideline for drivers who want to stay ahead of vehicle repairs. Drivers also are urged to discuss any additional changes that might be necessary with their mechanics during routine maintenance appointments.

The importance of regular car washes

Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. There are a number of steps involved in keeping a car or truck in top form, and that includes regular car washes.

Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. How -

ever, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.

• Protect from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches

Four signs tires need to be replaced

Cars are a significant investment, which underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance. Maintenance is more than just tending to what’s under the hood. Tires also require drivers’ attention, as aging, damaged tires pose a safety risk and also compromise vehicle performance. Tires can be easily overlooked, but the following are four signs tires need to be replaced.

1. Worn tread: The automotive experts at AutoZone note that tread depth is the most prevalent indicator that a tire needs to be replaced. AutoZone notes that tread depth should always be at least 1/16 of an inch throughout the tire. Depth should be measured across the tread and around the circumference. If the tread is at or below 1/16 of an inch, the tire should be replaced.

2. Bulges, gouges, or cracks: Geico notes that a deflated tire bulges at the sides, and that can compromise the safety of everyone in the vehicle. AutoZone says bulges occur when air gets between the inner liner and outer rubber layers, which can happen after hitting a curb or driving over a sizable pothole. A gouge or cut that is deeper than the outer layer of the tire also necessitates replacement.

3. Poor grip: Drivers may be able to feel certain tire problems, including poor grip, while driving. In such instances, tires may feel as though they are slipping. The tire experts at Firestone note that low tread can reduce tire traction and cause wheels to slip, which may be more noticeable when accelerating from a stop or driving on wet roads. Drivers who feel their tires are slipping can test the tread and replace tires that are low.

4. Vibration: Vibration is another issue drivers may feel rather than see. Identifying the cause requires noting where the vibrations are felt. Geico notes that vibration or thumping that feels like it’s coming from under the seats may indicate the tires are not balanced. A suspension issue could be to blame if the steering wheel feels like it’s vibrating. Either feeling should be brought to the attention of a mechanic immediately. Tire issues affect vehicle performance and compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers, and fellow motorists. When vehicles are not performing at peak capacity, drivers should not overlook various tire issues as a potential cause of such troubles.

and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.

• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a well-maintained car can bring in as much as 20% more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.

• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.

Fairmount book sale still growing strong

Raising money for the Sharing Fund, which helps cover the $3 million gap between care that is compensated and the actual cost of care Fairmount provides, is a group effort. Kent Richard, vice president of operations, helps out the fund by working with Mitch Hanna, director of marketing, to hold an annual book sale.

The seventh Fairmount book sale will be held on Friday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 10 a.m. in the

Farm Crest Community Room, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of campus. On Oct. 5, books will be marked to half price. The public is invited to attend.

Donations have been pouring in for the sale. “We will have 7,000 to 10,000 books and magazines,” shared Richard. “It’s a lot.”

About 50 Fairmount residents help to sort the books into more than 10 categories. Magazines, periodicals, CDs, puzzles, and games will also be offered at the sale.

Sale attendees will find books divided into categories

including history and biography, health and nutrition, Christian and non-Christian fiction, hobbies such as gardening and crafts, theology and devotional books and Bible studies, Anabaptist materials, cookbooks, children’s, and young adult books.

Richard noted that children’s books are plentiful this year. “We do have a lot of kids’ books, and we have puzzles and games,” he noted, adding that a large number of books in the Christian theology and biography genre will be available for purchase. “We have an especially strong collection of local history and Anabaptist books,” Richard added. A few books of special value are included in the sale items. “This book is an autographed copy of ‘The Earth is the Lord’s’ by John Landis Ruth (Ruth’s history of the Lancaster Mennonite Con-

Richard shared that leftover books will not be thrown away. “At the end of the day, (Fairmount volunteers) pack them up, and we take them to the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland, so they go to another good cause,” he stated.

According to Richard, the book sale has raised more than $28,000 since its inception. The 2023 sale raised $7,500 for the Sharing Fund. “The books are all donated,” said Richard, who noted that many books are donated by residents when they move to Fairmount, but also that area neighbors bring books for the sale on a yearly basis. “We have a lot of strong community support,” said Richard.

history and completed renovations. Hoffman led the team of architects in designing a new accessible bell tower entrance as well as the complete renovations to the kitchens, restrooms, and other meeting facilities in the administrative wing of the church. Arthur Funk & Sons served as the general contractor of the project.

Completed in October of 1880, the current St. Luke’s Episcopal Church building was a gift of Robert H. Coleman in memory of his recently deceased wife, Lilly, who was interred in the church’s crypt before construction was completed. The building was designed by New York architect Henry Martyn

Congdon in the High Victorian Gothic style. The building is in the form of a Latin cross and was constructed of native bluestone and sandstone. It measures 116 feet long and 75 feet wide, and it features a square, 85-foot tower with an octagonal turret. The roof is covered in rows of blue and red slate. Features of the building include prominent stained-glass windows, exposed wooden rafters, stone mosaics, and carved stone columns. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located across the corner from Harding Elementary School. For details and parking information, readers may visit https://stlukeslebanon .org/open-house/.

Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) star ratings, 79% of VA facilities received a summary star rating of four or five stars. In this year’s CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, more than 58% of VA hospitals included received four- or five-star ratings; this is the second year VA hospitals have been included in this review.

These findings come at a time when veteran trust in VA outpatient care has reached an all-time record high of 92%, based on a survey of more than 440,000 veterans. Additionally, these findings are consistent with a recent systematic review that found that VA health care is consistently rated as being as good as - or better than - non-VA health care.

Both CMS ratings aim to improve patients’ ability to make informed decisions about where they receive care. CMS awards Overall Star Ratings to hospitals based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. CMS’ HCAHPS summary star ratings combine information across 10 measures of patient experience, including

staff communication and responsiveness, hospital environment, willingness to recommend the hospital, and overall hospital rating. This year’s Overall Star Ratings are based on data collected between July 2019 and March 2023, and this quarter’s HCAHPS star ratings are based on data collected between October 2022 and September 2023.

This year marks the 22nd

anniversary of the Vickie’s Angel Foundation (VAF), which was founded by Mickey Minnich in memory of his wife, Vickie, whom he lost to cancer in 2002. VAF focuses on providing financial assistance for local families fighting cancer. The organization directly pays mortgages, rent, utilities and more to help ease the financial burden and allow the recipient to concentrate more on their treatment

and getting well. The main goal is to help keep families in their homes with food on the table during one of the most difficult times in their lives. VAF serves nine counties in central Pennsylvania and has raised more than $4 million for families in need.

For the past 21 years, the Angel Walk, which is the organization’s major fundraising event, has been held at Borough Park in New Cumberland. Last

year, the event expanded to include a satellite location in Dauphin County, an area that is among those with the greatest number of people served by VAF. The walks will be held simultaneously.

St. Paul’s prayer labyrinth can draw visitors closer to God

An important element of our spiritual lives, prayer is a way for us to connect directly with God.

There is no bad place to perform the act of prayer. But depending upon an individual’s perspective, some spaces may be better than others.

St. Paul Lutheran Church’s prayer labyrinth encourages prayer in an attempt to broaden our spiritual horizons.

“It’s kind of like a grounding area to pray,” said Suzanne Black, the church’s new director of outreach. “Ours is in a place in nature, so maybe you can spend more time praying than you would at other places. It’s in

a nice quiet spot. It grounds you with God during your prayer.”

The prayer labyrinth is part of the church’s sacred grounds, nestled in a natural wildflower meadow on the south side of the church’s structure at 200 W. Orange St., Lititz. The labyrinth is situated in an area surrounded by the church’s native forest, monarch waystation and community garden.

The prayer labyrinth is open to the public.

“Personally, I define prayer as a quiet time to speak to God and acknowledge his presence in my life,” said Black. “Prayer’s important because we’re all so busy in our daily lives. Setting aside time for prayer is important.”

Built from crushed stone and larger stones that serve as guide rails and adorned by native and nonnative plants, the prayer labyrinth is a simple walkway that winds its way within itself. The labyrinth is designed to produce a leisurely stroll that places one’s mind in a relaxed state suited for reflection, meditation and prayer.

“A labyrinth is a circular pathway that ends in one specific spot,” said Black. “It’s not like a maze. It has a specific route to get to the middle. Ours is not very long; some are longer.”

The use of labyrinths for spiritual purposes dates back more than 1,700 years.

The construction of St. Paul’s prayer labyrinth was completed on Nov. 18, 2023.

“(Prayer labyrinths) have been around for a very long time,” said Black. “The circular pathway is meant to represent a person’s spiritual journey.”

St. Paul Lutheran Church’s prayer labyrinth is used for group services, as well

as personal prayer. It fits in well with the church’s mission: “Rooted in God’s grace, we grow loving relationships with Jesus and one another to serve the world.”

“We are pleased so many people are using it,” said Black. “We are still developing the (sacred grounds), so we can encourage even more people to use the space. The sacred grounds is an area where we’re trying to take care of God’s creations. It’s part of the church’s mission, but not the whole mission.”

Intentional or not, the prayer labyrinth can serve as an outreach tool for the church and community.

“St. Paul Lutheran is a very welcoming church,” said Black. “We’d like to share God’s message with the community. The prayer labyrinth is a space meant to make you feel welcome. We would like to help the community as a whole come together.”
