Studio tour - where art begins

Community members will have a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of an artist during the sixth annual Hershey Hummelstown Art Studio Tour. As part of the event, 14 artists will open their doors to the public on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 20, from noon to 5 p.m.

“(People will be able to) take a tour around Hershey and Hummelstown to meet the artists, see new creations, learn techniques and shop for unique local art,” said Joan Maguire, owner of Hershey Art Gallery & Gifts. Maguire is one of the artists featured on the tour.

During the free driving tour, visitors will be able to chat with the artists in their home studios and view demonstrations. Some of the artists will have door prizes, silent auctions and other special treats for visitors.

“I will have free Halloween card painting for youths,” said Maguire. “They can use watercolor or Magic Marker, depending on their age, or colored pencils, and they can trace a witch and a black cat. They can make their own Halloween card at no charge.”

Artists on this year’s tour and their specialties include the following: Archana Sehgal - oil, watercolor, gouache and acrylic paintings; Ben LaDieu - pen and ink, pencil works and mixed media; Claudia Christensen - fiber artwork; Dale Kelley - mixed media and dry brush watercolor; Daniel Petruzzi - charcoal and mixed media; Jamie Juliana of Phoenix Pottery Studio - functional stoneware and porcelain pottery; Jill Peckelun - oil paintings, plein air and studio landscapes and ink and pencil drawings of critters; Jodi Fox - pottery; Laird Morgan

Students invited to compete in science fair

The North Museum is accepting registrations for its Science and Engineering Fair (NMSEF), which will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Millersville University in Millersville.

For the first time in its 73 years, the Science and Engineering Fair, presented by the Arconic Foundation, is open not only to students in Lancaster County, but also to those in Lebanon County. It is available to students in grades six through 12 from public, private, charter, online, and parochial schools and homeschooling programs.

The inclusion of Lebanon County students marks the NMSEF’s expansion to a regional science and engineering fair like the Pittsburgh science fair, the Philadelphia science fair, and Harrisburg’s Capital Area fair. The NMSEF is one of six fairs in Pennsylvania affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and the top two students from the senior division of the NMSEF will earn a place at the ISEF to compete with 1,500 of their peers from around the world. The North Museum will pay for registration, fees, travel, and accommodations for its two champions.

The North Museum’s resident astronomer, Cole Penkunas, commented, “As a former Warwick High School student, the NMSEF was the pinnacle of my STEM education each year. The competition was formidable and prepared me for the demands of thesis fulfillment at the Pennsylvania State University, where I focused my research on very massive stars,

Artists on the tour include Joan Maguire (above) and Ben LaDieu (photo inside).

Staying sharp: Brain-boosting tips

Cognitive decline is a concern for many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing ideas can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain changes in size and structure as a person gets older. The changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may start showing their symptoms in people who have reached their mid-60s, says the National Institute on Aging.

Older adults who want to boost their cognitive health may consider a few strategies.

Maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is associated with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Lowering blood pressure also reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

When learning new information, people are encouraged to use multiple senses. Harvard Health says that when more senses are used in learning something, more of the brain is involved in retaining the memory.

Staying physically active is also important. Exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain,

which also helps to reduce the risk for hypertension.

According to Cone Health Medical Group, eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like tuna, salmon, and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated oils.

Getting into the written word can also be beneficial. According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32%. Joining a book club or simply reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writing improves

memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen the brain.

Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties. Instead, consider tea or coffee; these beverages can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories.

Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise, and brain-stimulating activities.

Seniors can swim their way to improved health

Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.

Mailed outside our circulation area for $36/year. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. | PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

DESPERATELY

Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.

Because the water provides

buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.

A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is

more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.

Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.

The role of a home health aide

Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.

Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.

Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.

Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.

AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location. Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as

dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.

Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to

adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.

Home health aides serve an

important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

Presenting sponsor Arconic Foundation has given a $50,000 grant for the fair.

“The North Museum is thrilled by the generosity of the Arconic Foundation and their ongoing commitment to supporting access to STEM education opportunities for students in Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Scott Downs, director of development and strategic partnerships. “We continue to be grateful for the financial support we receive from the many sponsors of the NMSEF, as well as the outstanding contributions from our judges, volunteers, and participating teachers and students.”

Businesses interested in sponsorships may contact Downs at sdowns@northmuseum.org. Community volunteers are also needed to assist at the event and may contact sciencefair@north museum.org.

Throughout its history, the NMSEF has inspired thousands of young researchers to explore science and engineering through various projects. The North Museum has managed the fair in Lancaster County since 2009, furthering its mission of enabling knowledge of nature and science by inspiring individuals, engaging communities, and connecting organizations.
