PARPC gives children a chance to be kids
BY JEFF FALK
Can Palmyra come out and play? Yes. Yes, it can.
By encouraging kids to get outside and become active, the Palmyra Area Recreation and Parks Commission (PARPC) serves an important role in the community.
PARPC achieves its goals through cooperation, collaboration and sports.
St., Palmyra, PARPC operates and sponsors 18 mostly athletic programs and camps highlighting basketball, soccer, field hockey, volleyball, track and field, distance running, softball, swimming, tennis, fitness and dance.
“My
favorite thing is going to a youth program and seeing families together enjoying that family relationship.”
“In order to be well-rounded human beings, I think recreation and education go hand in hand,” said Tina Manoogian-Fischer, PARPC’s director. “One of the things we need to do is keep our bodies in shape. We want our minds to be sharp, and we want our bodies to be sharp as they can be.”
Headquartered at 325 S. Railroad
The programs are designed for boys and girls in kindergarten through grade eight, residing mainly in the borough of Palmyra, North Londonderry Township and South Londonderry Township.
There are fees associated with some of the programs and camps.
“Oftentimes, it’s kids who want to try something new,” said Manoogian-Fischer. “We’re the organization that can help them get their foot in the door. Sports is a good way to learn teamwork, common courtesies, compassion, empathy and how to get along

The University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and tutoring company Thinkist have launched the Rural Pathways to Success Peer Tutor Program, which seeks to increase the number of students from rural districts who pursue further education after high school.
Supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the program offers high school students in grades 10 to 12 with at least a B average in their current math class the opportunity to receive training as peer tutors at no cost to families. The peer tutors engage in ongoing training while they assist middle and high school students who are struggling with math.
The program’s broader objective is to inspire students in rural areas of Pennsylvania to pursue further education and careers in teaching, fostering a cycle of educational motivation and achievement as
well as building the teacher pipeline. Participants in the tutor training program not only gain tutoring experience, but they also earn college credits and a certificate upon completing the program.
The fall session is scheduled to begin in mid-October, but youths who would like to receive tutoring may enroll through the end of October. The fall session will end on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025.
Registrations are also being accepted for students who would like to participate either as tutees or tutors during the spring session, which will run from Monday, March 3, to Sunday, June 1. The registration deadlines are Monday, Feb. 10, for tutors and Saturday, March 15, for tutees.

HOPE International funding makes world go around
BY JEFF FALK
Every individual, every organization has a story to tell.
Helping Other People Eternally (HOPE) International’s story is one of compassion and empowerment and the human spirit. It’s a story that continues to evolve, continues to change - one whose final chapters have yet to be written.
“I think some people do (know about HOPE International’s mission),” said Jeff Rutt, chairman of the board and founder of the organization. “I think more people need to know about the work God is doing through HOPE International. If we can share that with more people, hope can be restored in more lives. I’m always looking for ways to spread the word about the difference HOPE is making in the lives of families around the world. We need to be a voice for the voiceless.”
Headquartered at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International is a Christian organization focused on helping individuals and families in poverty around the world to become financially stable. HOPE International performs its work through small, low-interest loans; savings groups; financial education; microfinance services; housing programs; and agricultural initiatives.
“When HOPE International was started, I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” said Rutt. “If you go to start a global organization, you don’t start out as an old dairy-farmer-turnedbuilder. But God knew the steps. My vision at the beginning was to help a few poor families in Ukraine. It’s grown explosively, and I think we’re just getting started.”
That was 27 years ago,
in 1997. Since then, HOPE International has provided financial assistance to more than 3 million people in more than 20 countries, such as Haiti, the Republic of the Congo, Thailand, Guatemala and Indonesia.
But the nonprofit is neither satisfied nor resting on its laurels.
“When we first started, we were looking for ways to provide hope spiritually and financially,” said Rutt. “We were just a fledgling 501(c)(3) at the time. We were trying to figure out how we can join hands with other organizations and work together.”
HOPE International’s work is funded through individual donors, fundraisers, churches, foundations and business donations. Since its inception, HOPE International has raised more than $275 million and lent more than $1.7 billion.
Between 2017 and 2023,
98% of the loans in the HOPE International network were repaid.
“We want to continue to grow our programs and deepen our roots,” said Rutt. “There are more families to be served, thousands and thousands. There’s plenty of need out there. We want to restore dignity in families’ lives and use that platform to proclaim the Gospel. I think there’s so much potential. HOPE International is a partner; we’re not trying to provide the answers.”
Financial stability in a community can have far-reaching ripple effects. It can spur growth and stimulate local economies.
“The families we serve are very competent; they have talents just like you and I,” said Rutt. “The point of the story is that I think the world can be a better place. Praise God for the amazing life inspirations that have happened and
Photo contest winners announced
The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership has announced the winners of the 13th annual Susquehanna Greenway Photo Contest.
In the Adventures category, the winners were Emily Musser, Middletown, first place; George Kurzik, Wrightsville, second place; and Julie Manwarren, Pittston, third place. The honorees in the River Towns category were Danielle Weld, Clearfield, first; Tony Ragusea, Lewisburg, second; and Shawn
Lesitsky, Marysville, third. Susquehanna Greenway Partnership also recognized three photographers for their Landmarks entries: Dan Myers, Wrightsville, first; Daniel Hurtt, Bainbridge, second; and George

with others. It’s also a way to get kids away from electronics. Perhaps it could lead them into a high school sport they like.”
“We don’t care about the outcome at this level,” added Manoogian-Fischer. “We want to develop skills and teach the sport. We serve as a feeder system for the Palmyra Area School District (PASD). We often hire some of the high school coaches. That way the kids are being taught the skills that the coaches are looking for. It’s nice to build that relationship between the young people and the coaches.”
In 2023, PARPC programs and camps generated 1,485 unique participations.
“I believe that people are aware of us, and they’re utilizing our programs,” said Manoogian-Fischer. “I think the participation is very good.”
“We’re one big community, even though we may reside in different municipalities,” she added. “That’s one of the things I love about this area. (The programs are) a way to bring families together. My favorite thing is going to a youth program and seeing
families together enjoying that family relationship. That gives me an immense sense of pride. That just makes me smile from ear to ear, and it warms my heart.”
Established in 1975, PARPC is officially made up of three staff members. But the organization relies heavily on volunteer coaches and the cooperation of the three municipalities it serves, as well as the school district, to execute its mission.
“We do not own any of our own facilities,” said Manoogian-Fischer. “We primarily utilize Palmyra Area School District facilities, including the Ridge Road Elementary sports complex. Since we’re a feeder system for the school, it makes sense.
Fortunately, PASD does a very good job of maintaining its indoor and outdoor facilities. We also use fields in South Londonderry Township and at In The Net (Sports Complex), trails at North Londonderry Township and the parks and playgrounds at the municipalities we serve.”

Tips for fuel conservation
In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.
Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving
CREMATION
will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

Fire Prevention Week tips offered
Fire Prevention Week was observed from Oct. 6 to 12. This year’s theme was “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!”
The National Fire Protection Association offered the following safety tips.
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, like in a hallway, and on each level, including the basement of the home.
physical disabilities. Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or do not respond when tested.
Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.
These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.
