Combs and honeycombs
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Did you know that bees must visit approximately 23,000 flowers to make one teaspoon of honey? Or that raw honey has 2,000 intrinsic factors that include antibacterial and antiviral properties? If you did, there’s a good chance you’ve been hanging out with Jodie Combs, an active member of the Conestoga Herb Guild and a bee aficionado who tends to multiple hives located on her property in New Providence.
research and communication with local beekeeping organizations, Jodie and David learned of a nucleus colony, or nuc for short.
A nuc is a small colony of honey bees that can be used as the foundation for a new hive. The nuc consists of bees from captured swarms or larger bee farm colonies.
“Every bee has a different function. There’s just so much about them that is so amazing.”
Jodie’s husband, David, first approached her about beekeeping seven years ago. The couple decided it would be a fitting pastime for a family with the name Combs, and Jodie began researching what it would take to start raising bees. After some
After diving into the world of beekeeping, Jodie has not only learned a lot about bees, but also become familiar with their habits and preferences, including their daily schedules and what plants they are attracted to. The Combs family home is a vibrant grove of flowers, and Jodie purposefully grows many plants people often disregard as weeds. Dandelions, chickweed and jewelweed are only a few of the many varieties preferred by bees, and many flowers produce

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sister-in-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David Charles, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help
The Fight. Fifteen years later, the organization has raised more than $1.2 million dollars for breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.
Help The Fight will host its 15th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The event will take place from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., and it will include live and silent auctions, prize drawings and giveaways.
Only 500 tickets for the banquet

The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, many students in Lancaster County
peak pollen levels at different times of day. Jodie said she had noticed the bees visit dandelions between 10 and 11 a.m. during the plants peak pollen time, and other pollen sources peak between noon and 4 p.m. “That’s why you don’t just want to have a nice yard with nothing in it. Ours is a big, weedy mess,” Jodie joked.
In addition to shaping the landscape of the Combs home, beekeeping has sparked a passion in Jodie and her daughter, Emily Kauffman, for making a variety of items with honey and beeswax. Jodie and Emily
make honey, wax figures, balms, candles and several other items with the products of their hives.
“People don’t understand if you lose your bees, you lose 85% of your food,” Jodie said. “Every bee has a different function. There’s just so much about them that is so amazing.”
Jodie and Emily will sell their items at the Conestoga Herb Guild’s annual Herb Fest, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. During the event, Jodie will present a program titled “The Buzz About Bees” to share her experience as a beekeeper and to offer insight on the importance of bees and their fascinating behavior.
Herb Fest will be open to the public and free to attend. For more information, search for “Conestoga Herb Guild” on Facebook.

Corn Cob Acres to open for fall season
Corn Cob Acres, 191 College Ave., Mountville, will open for its 14th season of fall family fun on Saturday, Sept. 7. Corn Cob Acres offers
more than 50 themed activities that are included in the ticket price. Guests may take a ride on a custom barrel train, climb through the birdhouse village, ride pedal carts, take a stroll through a cornfield trail and test their skills at a massive game wall.
Food and entertainment will be available throughout the day, including a pig race performance held several times each day at the Corncob Raceway.
Church to offer GriefShare program
Mt. Nebo Church, 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea, will offer the GriefShare support program on Thursdays starting Sept. 12. The free program will meet every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. through Dec. 19, with the exception of Nov. 28.
The meetings will incorporate new material from the GriefShare program, which offers resources to help those who have lost a loved one. During each meeting, participants will discuss a specific topic, such as learning to adapt to altered patterns and routines. The meeting will include a video and group discussion and activities using the GriefShare workbook.
The session will be led by Ron Harris and his wife, Sandy Harris. Ron has previously participated in multiple GriefShare groups throughout the county, and he began leading the program at Mt. Nebo Church last year. Due to Ron’s experience with the program, both as a participant and a trained group leader, he volunteered to reinstate the group to give other people in the community the support he once received. Ron also wished to make the program accessible for those who aren’t able to register for other groups in the area due to a limited number of spaces.
Ron first joined a GriefShare group five years ago after the death of his wife, Majorie, to whom he had been married for 54 years. Sandy joined Ron’s group at
Mt. Nebo Church last year, and she offered to assist with the program this year to accommodate female members who may feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with another woman.
Before retiring in 2004, Ron worked as a pupil services coordinator for Penn Manor School District for 34 years. Although he worked closely with school psychologists, guidance counselors and school nurses over the course of his career, Ron is not a licensed psychologist; he will offer participants information about services that he is unable to provide during GriefShare sessions.
Preregistration is appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome. To register, contact Sandy at 717682-9522 or Mt. Nebo Church at 717-284-4331. In the event of hazardous road conditions, the weekly meeting will be canceled, and the program will be extended.

were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day.
Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts.
Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers can be now found in nearly every school district in the county.
UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year, and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight

of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”
This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and
sponsors.
In addition to the funds raised by the golf outing and local sponsors, UDS relies on numerous volunteers to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog must complete a 22-month training process, and volunteers assist by walking dogs and taking them home for a weekend to get a break from the kennel. “I can’t overstate how important volunteers are. Without them, we can’t bring in new puppies and they don’t get enough socialization during training,” Breece said. “We’re always looking for people to help with whatever they can, even if it’s just walking a dog for an hour. There’s no commitment.”

“We’re inviting members of the local community to join us as we celebrate 15 years and raising $1.2 million for cancer patients in Lancaster County,” said patient coordinator Susie Dailey. “The generosity of
our supporters allows us to continue our mission to help people throughout the community in need.”
Although Help The Fight’s annual fundraiser has evolved to incorporate a banquet and auctions,
the event always includes a bake sale to remember its humble origins. Lynda decided to make the first fundraiser a bake sale to enable local residents to support the cause regardless of their income levels.
“I think many people have rallied behind us because the money we raise stays in the community,” Dailey said. “Our board of directors is also totally volunteer-driven, and everyone feels passionately about the cause.”
The funds raised from the annual banquet directly benefit breast cancer patients in the local community. Help The Fight provides Lancaster County residents with what the organization calls gap funding, which entails financial support to help recipients pay for household bills as well as medical expenses. Many Americans’ insurance benefits are provided by their employers, and breast cancer patients often lose their insurance while undergoing treatment because their treatment prevents them from working fulltime.
Help The Fight is always accepting volunteers to help with events and to raise awareness of its mission to support breast cancer patients. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the office or visit Help The Fight’s main location at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville.
For BOH, cars are vehicles to transport its mission
BY JEFF FALK
It’s broadening horizons. It’s seeking to reach more people. It’s attempting to do a greater good.
Blessings of Hope (BOH) is expanding its mission.
The local nonprofit’s upcoming car show represents the next step in BOH’s continuing evolution. Because it believes what it does is important, BOH seeks to share its purpose with everyone it can reach.
“We’re here to serve the community,” said Darek Raguza, who’s been BOH’s director of development since October of 2023. “We’re doing events to get people educated and energized about the mission. We want to make connections and spread the word about what we do.”
BOH will conduct its inaugural car show on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Stormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The day’s festivities will begin with vehicle registration at 9 a.m., and prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m.
The event is open to the public, and no fee will be charged for admission.
“This event is a fun-raiser as well as a fundraiser,” said Raguza. “An event like this has a very energetic atmosphere. People will be checking out the cars, and you can see the smiles on the owners’ faces when people take pictures and ask questions. For the owners, these classic cars are like their babies. They put a lot of money into keeping these cars in pristine condition. They’re their pride and joys. But beyond the impressive car display, the true highlight of the day will be the spirit of community and generosity.”
More than 20 vehicles, everything from vintage muscle cars to sleek, modern
sports cars - even a 1924 Model T - are expected to be on hand. Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories, including farthest driven to reach the show, best paint job and most likely to get pulled over by law enforcement.
Organizers of BOH’s car show are hoping to raise $5,000. All proceeds from the event will go to the organization’s Outreach Support Fund Partnership program, which empowers ministries to serve underprivileged communities by providing nutritious packed food.
“Overall, the goal is to address food discrepancies in our community and educate people about how they can help through donations and volunteering,” said Raguza. “Through special events, we’re trying to reach individuals who aren’t familiar with the mission of Blessings of Hope.”
BOH, which seeks to use excess food to battle hunger, operates facilities and warehouses in Leola, East Petersburg, the city of Lancaster and Campbellsville, Ky. The local nonprofit also introduced its inaugural golf outing at Foxchase Golf Club in May - its fifth such annual community outreach eventwhich raised $15,000 for its mission.
“There’s a growing need,” said Raguza. “There’s so much food being wasted and thrown away. It’s all good, fresh products that stores can’t accept but we can. We distribute to those in need. Everyone thinks we’re a food bank, but we’re a logistics hub. We’re able to receive large shipments of food products, and we break them down into smaller portions. We work with other ministries and food banks.” For additional information about Blessings of Hope, go to www.blessingsof hope.com.

The guest speakers will be Katherine “Kit” Pearson (left) and Kathrin “Kat” Grimm, who recently took part in a local goat yoga class.
during the pandemic, Pearson signed up for her 200hour Yoga Teacher Training. At Hudson Yoga Project, now Yoga Renew, she completed the course to become a certified yoga instructor. She taught at the Hoboken Crunch Signature Gym and conducted private and small group lessons. Since moving to Lancaster, she has made plans to start teaching again in the next few years and establish a local yoga practice.
Pearson will speak about how yoga helps people explore their mind-body connection and how incorporating even a short daily practice can have a positive impact on a person’s overall health. This will be followed by a demonstration with beginner postures and modifications for those with injuries or limited mobility.
Attendees will also be able to pet a goat, visit the town of Bunnyville, go on a tractor ride and pick a pumpkin that can be painted for free at a pumpkin decorating station.
New for 2024 is a Build-
