On March 15, 2020, Branch Community launched a church at Ridgeview. “(We were just) going into the pandemic,” recalled Steven. The first service attracted 120 worshippers, but Branch did not hold another service at the church for four months due to COVID-19 restrictions. Currently, Branch uses the sanctuary every other Sunday at 6 p.m. “We have some dedicated office space and another room we share,” said Steven. Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) Student Council representative Megan Wenger learned a valuable lesson during her first year of helping to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network. Wenger said that the group began organizing the fundraiser, including writing speeches and making posters, two weeks before the effort began in October 2021. “It takes everybody to help others,” recalled Wenger. “It took everybody (working together) to get things done. You can’t do things by yourself.”

As the phase one remodel of the gymnatorium in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, neared completion at the end of November, Ellie Green, director of hospitality with The Factory Ministries and Adam Nagle, executive director at The Factory, had nothing but praise for the results. “Stunning,” noted Nagle.

Youth Center. A landscaped courtyard will be available for appetizers or photos. “The room can hold 309 people with round tables,” noted Nagle, who added that with high top tables more than 500 can be accommodated, and with a dance floor, the capacity will be 350. Phase two of the project will start in the spring. Funded by Redevelopment Authority money from a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), it will include refinishing the floor, updating the bathrooms and HVAC system, and renovating the stage. Researching funding for phase three, which will include a focus on a commercial kitchen, is ongoing. Nagle explained that the broader vision for remodeling the gymnatorium is twofold. The building, which was sold to the ministry for $1 in 2017 by the Pequea Valley School District, provides a home for the youth center, social services, a food pantry, and more, but costs to maintain the structure are high. “The heart of this was to find a way that 100% of a donation (to the ministry) goes to programs and staff that support the program,” said Nagle. The second goal was to resolve an issue identified by Project Activate, a program of the Lancaster Community Foundation designed to bring about pos-

itive change by building a more inclusive community. “Project Activate discovered there is not a gathering space in this area for events,” said Nagle. “ We look at our mission as empowering people, connecting them to resources, and building community.

Green pointed out that the renovations had opened the ceiling in the 1927 building, formerly the Paradise Elementary School, to expose the steel beams. “It makes you catch your breath,” she noted. Nagle added that the goal has been to preserve the history and look of the room but give it a modern feel. To that end, wood trim around the room and especially the stage has been preserved, and original wood has been salvaged for repairs. Phase one of the remodel, which included the work on the ceiling, updating lighting for both use as a gym and as an event space, and paint, was completed in December. Currently, and until phase two begins in the spring, the space is available for events at deeply discounted rates. When phase one was completed, Green noted that Factory holiday events, including a Christmas party and a gingerbread house making event were planned. Caroline’s Rentals was scheduled to help stage the area for photos of how the venue could be decorated for events. Nagle mentioned that holiday parties, conferences, employee recognition events, galas, and a variety of other celebrations large and small may be held in the gymnatorium, where portable basketball hoops will be available for use by attendees of The Factory

had a bin,” explained Wenger, who noted that as each homeroom collected pennies, other homerooms could sabotage their point totals by adding silver coins or dollars to the bin. Miss Sexton’s homeroom claimed the prize when a member brought in $25 in rolled pennies. The students were awarded a breakfast of juice, cereal bars, and muffins. According to Student Council adviser Alicia Trescavage, similar fundraisers for Children’s Miracle Network have been held each fall at PVIS for six years. She said that the fundraiser was originally inspired by a student who was benefiting from Children’s Miracle Network at the time. Since then, PVIS has lost students who benefited from the network to childhood diseases. “We talk about kids helping kids,” explained Trescavage. “You don’t know when it could be your family (afflicted by a children’s disease).” Trescavage explained that funds collected by PVIS will be directed to Penn State Children’s Hospital, where PVIS students have received services.

The students organized a penny war among homerooms to raise $229. In addition, a Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) dress-down day raised another $216plus, for a combined total of more than $445. PVIS Student Council officers and committee chairs traveled to Harrisburg on Nov. 4, 2021, to present a check to Pay for Play XV, a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network by 105.7 The X. Children’s Miracle Network supports children’s hospitals across North America with a goal of helping to provide care for children who are not fully covered by Medicaid and other insurance programs. Since the 1980s, the organization has raised about $7 billion to help save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. According to Wenger, the penny wars idea was discussed by Student Council members, who decided homerooms could earn points by bringing in pennies. Pennies represented positive points and silver coins and dollars were negative, so they subtracted points. “Each homeroom

Penn State Extension’s Food Systems and Local Foods team is the recipient of $254,000 through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farmers Market Promotion Program. The awarded project, titled Building Dynamic Marketplaces & Stronger Networks for Pennsylvania’s Direct to Consumer Outlets, addresses the shifting marketing landscape in Pennsylvania toward directto-consumer outlets like farmers markets and retail farm markets. The grant is part of the USDA’s $90.2 million investment in 203 projects to strengthen and explore new market opportunities for local and regional food businesses. The funding is made possible through

grant programs administered by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) as part of the Local Agriculture Marketing Program (LAMP). These grants are intended to help maximize opportunities for economic growth and ingenuity in local and regional food systems to kickstart a transformation. The Penn State Extension team will provide educational programming, direct technical assistance, and peerto-peer networking and learning opportunities for farmers markets and retail farm market owners and staff through both new and signature programs, including Under the Ground, Retail Farm Market School, and the annual Farmers Market Managers Conference. Through a variety of

learning formats, this project will equip producers with tools and information to expand their customer bases, increase customer retention, increase sales of locally produced agricultural products, and respond quickly and efficiently to marketplace challenges and demands. Retail farm market operators and other food and beverage businesses throughout Pennsylvania can now register for Under the Ground, a full-year program that provides participants with a shopper survey customized for their business, in-store secret shopper evaluation and feedback, peer network connections, immersive learning experiences, and other useful tools for improving retail operations

and the customer experience. The program will begin in the spring. The first 20 businesses to register will receive a discount on the fee. In addition, two full scholarships are available. To register, visit https://extension .psu.edu/ and search for “Under the Ground.” For more information about Under the Ground, contact Miranda Harple at mharple@psu.edu. Additional programs for retail farm markets and farmers markets will launch in the spring. Business operators interested in program announcements may sign up for Penn State Extension business management and marketing emails at https://extension.psu.edu/ email-preferences.

PA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents al-

ready have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and Pennsylvania residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

Q GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.

Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per PA resident has been imposed

PENNSYLVANIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Q

SILVER: one of the last silver coins minted for circulation

ENLARGED TO SHOW DETAIL: year varies 1916-1947

FACTS:

Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

LAST REMAINING: minted in philadelphia, denver & san francisco

RARELY SEEN: minted by the u.s. mint in the early 1900’s

If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB3534 Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:

Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB3534 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

Kanagy reported that the two churches are working together to renovate the church lobby. “It’s a total joint project,” she said. “It’s not common to have two churches cooperate on that level.” Fisher echoed Kanagy’s comments. “(Ridgeview has) rolled out the red carpet for us,” he said. “There’s a spirit of wanting to empower and help us.” Branch Community has its roots in a prayer meeting Steven’s wife, Crystal, started in her parents New Holland basement in 2015. By 2019, the group had grown significantly and began to have a vision of planting a church in the area. Steven and Crystal attended HarvestNet School of Ministry in Ephrata to receive pastoral credentials. Steven believes that Branch Commu-

nity, which has grown to a core group of about 140, attracts people who are looking to be part of a community where the Holy Spirit is taught and experienced. “People are looking for a more dynamic and more real encounter with God,” he said. “People are drawn to that.” Branch Community services follow a format that begins with contemporary worship, includes announcements, and then finishes with a sermon. Preachers are drawn from a pastoral team of seven. The church offers a children’s ministry for those age 6 and under. According to Steven, the model of meeting in homes and at Ridgeview has worked well. “We had this vision of a hybrid between a house

church and a more traditional church,” he said. “We really value house-to-house, life-onlife, home groups.” More information and a schedule of services may be found at www.branchlanc.org. Branch Network is the parent organization of Branch Community. It is a regional network developing in Lancaster County, but with connections in Uganda and Haiti, where church members are serving long term. Dave is working with businesses, mission organizations, and other churches to mobilize people and resources with a vision to multiply churches. “We have a heart to plant additional churches,” said Steven. More information about Branch Network may be found at www.branchnet.org.

Braves Defeat Oley Valley, 42-39

The Pequea Valley Braves defeated Oley Valley in a big non-league girls’ basketball game on Monday, January 10. The Braves improved to 5-6 on the year with the close 42-39 win. Winning the close ones has been a challenge for the young Pequea squad this year, according to head coach Jason McDonald “We make some young mistakes near the end of our games, which make the end of games very interesting,” said

McDonald. An example of McDonald’s observation came in Monday’ game where the Lynx battled back from a 35-25 deficit by outscoring the Braves 14-7 in the fourth quarter. “In the last quarter we stumbled,” he said. “To their credit, the kids didn’t fold. We made the plays we needed to make at the end of the game. “We are competing and we’re playing great defense,” McDonald said. “Our defense has been phenomenal. We are holding teams to 40 or 41 points per

game.” The defense held the Lynx to only two points in the opening period of this game. “We might play them in the district playoffs,” McDonald said. Breanne Beiler led the Braves with 11 points and 11 rebounds. “As far as rebounding and finishing around the basket, she has been having a good year,” McDonald said. Shania Stoltzfus poured in nine points while Katie Stoltzfus and Sarah Arment scored eight

Jordan Poole poured in another 18. Nevin Stoltzfus had a remarkable game for Pequea, topping his team in scoring with 16 points. Stoltzfus connected four times from three-point range. Myles Furlong nailed a pair of three-point jumpers and finished with six points. Fellow sophomore Jackson Neff also

Lancaster And York YMCAs Merge

Toward Better Mental Health ANN MEAD ASH

“Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she

shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces. “I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be

absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that parents of today’s children are likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addition, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower, according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available. The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association - the YMCA of the Roses - effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both

boards and members. Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. Richardson, who has been the president/CEO of the YMCA of York and York County for over 27 years and the acting president/CEO of the Lancaster Family YMCA since September 2020, will serve as the merged YMCA’s president/CEO. In each county, a director of operations will oversee the day-to-day activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. The volunteer leadership for both associations will have an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as

will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers, such as ones from United Way initiatives, will continue to have opportunities to serve their local YMCA. The merged YMCA of the Roses will run five branches and five pools across both counties in rural, suburban, and urban communities. It will have a combined operating budget of about $15 million and over 500 employees, and it will serve over 30,000 members a year. YMCA of the Roses will work with over 1,500 volunteers for a combined 20,000 service hours and give out over $2 million in financial assistance so everyone can afford a YMCA membership. YMCA of the Roses will have an office for a New American Welcome Center in each county so that newcomers to the area can access YMCA resources. Its free or low-cost child development programs will serve 600 children. Summer camp in five locations across both counties, including financial assistance, will work to ensure that all the community’s children can go to camp. The organization’s leadership will continually evaluate community issues and resources so that it can implement charitable programs to meet the region’s new and emerging needs.
