SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVII • NO 28
Lions Mark Years Of Service To Paradise few members of the Paradise Township Lions Club have been with the organization for several decades. John King has a 55year pin, and Skip Lichty has been with the Lions more than 45 years. With the organization celebrating 93 years of supporting the Paradise community, Paradise Lions Club member Ron Ernst felt it was important to share a few of the highlights of the group’s history. Over the years, Lions’ efforts have included providing students with safe passage to school, scholarships toward further education, and athletic fields and parks, as well as starting the Pequea Valley High School 4-H Club. Both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have benefited from Lions’ support. The Paradise Memorial Park was created by the club on land purchased in 1947. At one time, Lions Club members took care of all the maintenance at the park, which eventually came to include baseball fields, tennis courts, and a walking trail. In 1980, a community building

was added, and in 1981, the park was transferred to Paradise Township as a gift. Recent club contributions to the park have included updating the kitchen in the community center, which the Lions helped outfit with air conditioning, and donating to the purchase of new playground equipment. In 2005, the Lions began admitting female members, with Gail Stoltzfoos, Marie Glass, Mary Alice High, Joy Koshuta, Dale Browman, Jeane Menges, and Karen Shue among the first to join the Paradise Club. The club now includes more than 30 members from the local community. The Lions have long been known for working to aid the visually impaired. Fundraisers by the Paradise Club have included antique car shows organized by Jim Stoner and J. Ron Burkholder. Later, John Koshuta and Bill Menges were the forces behind the For Sight Golf Scramble. The Dinner in the Dark program, which benefits VisionCorps, has also been a hallmark of local Lions history.
Expressing Gratitude: Cavod Plans Open House
Members of the Paradise Township Lions Club lined up outside the community center in the Paradise Memorial Park. The club is celebrating 93 years of serving Paradise.

“We are so grateful to be here,” said Connie Dienner, founder and director of Cavod Performing Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to offering a godly environment to study the arts. “We are celebrating through this open house.” Dienner said she is especially thankful that the organization has survived the last year or so when COVID-19 restrictions See Gratitude pg 5

Activating Potential At The Factory
Local History from pg 1 The celebration is also designed to commemorate local history. In 1701, William Penn spent the night in Gap, then known as Gap-in-theHills, on his way to Conestoga to sign a peace treaty with the Native Americans, thereby making Gap a part of history. “‘William Penn’ is coming back to the area for the first time since 1701,” event organizer Kathleen Hood said with a smile. According to a history timeline provided by Hood, White Chimneys started as a log cabin built in 1720 by Francis Jones. Six years later, he received a license to open the Francis Jones Tavern. An addition was made to the original cabin in 1790. “Jones’ granddaughter married a Slaymaker, and they purchased the building in 1779,” Hood noted. “The Slaymaker family held the property for over 200 years. In the 1800s, Hannah Slaymaker made a remark about the beauty of the white chimneys on the house, and the name stuck.” In 1923, the final addition was put on the house, and in the 1960s and ’70s the building operated as a museum. In 1974, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1999, it was sold to a family that ran an antique shop, but it was sold again in 2006 to the Meyer family. Hood noted that the upcoming gala was originally scheduled for 2020, White Chimneys’ 300th year. “When Jessica Meyer, who owns White Chimneys with her father, Jack, was thinking of having this
300th anniversary (gala), she asked me to help plan the event and I was honored to do so,” said Hood. “It was supposed to be held on July 4, 2020, and it was canceled due to the pandemic.” All of the attractions planned for 2020 will take place this year instead. “We have Victorian dancers, Native American musicians, speakers and the encampment by the 69th Irish Volunteers Regiment,” Hood noted. “Rough and Tumble (Engineers Historical Association) is bringing threshing machines, tractors and steam engines.” Everyone who attends the event will receive an entry form to win a commemorative quilt that will be given away through a random drawing. Hood noted that the entire White Chimneys property will be utilized throughout the event. “The guest speakers will be in the barn. The regiment will be outdoors in tents,” she said. “The crafters and the art exhibit by the Lancaster County Art Association will be under canopies.” Historic White Chimneys is located at 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. A complete schedule for the day is available at www.whitechimneys.com/300th -anniversary. In addition to the free events, a dinner served by Alexander Catering of West Chester will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information and tickets, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Historic White Chimneys 300th Anniversary Gala Presidential Dinner.”
Lions from pg 1 Lions also aided victims of Hurricane Katrina and held an annual picnic for hospitalized veterans in partnership with the American Legion. Since the eight local men who formed the club first met in 1928, the motto “We Serve” has remained a constant focus for the Lions. Recent fundraisers have included a soup and sandwich event and a

Back in 2019, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) chose Paradise as one of two areas in which to pilot Project Activate, a program designed to bring about positive change by building a more inclusive community. The Paradise design team began meeting at the Together Community Center (TCC), home of The Factory Ministries, in September, and in November, the group held a Community Idea Gathering at TCC. During the event, members of the community joined the team to share suggestions about ways to resolve several issues facing the area. Issues were presented on boards arranged
in the TCC gym area. After COVID-19 restrictions halted the progress of the initiative, staff members at The Factory Ministries determined not to let the project die. According to Adam Nagle, executive director at The Factory, two of the three final concepts suggested by the Project Activate team members are moving forward. One of the issues was focused on the need for housing. “The Paradise Partnership Network was figuring out how to build affordable housing in the area. It’s a real concern,” said Nagle. However, during the Idea Gathering, Nagle met Dana Hanchin, president of Housing Development Corporation MidAtlantic, who had been invited by
LCCF. “I reached out to her to continue that conversation (about housing),” said Nagle. “We are discussing a project that could take shape here in Paradise.” A second idea was to create a community center in Paradise. Nagle noted that from the time he began working at The Factory in 2019, he noticed a lack of places to meet. “We don’t have a drop-in space to gather and for the generations to mix,” he said. He reported that when Project Activate zeroed in on the issue, he felt it would Adam Nagle stands on make productive use of the 1927 former school where The Factory is the stage of the Together Community Center, housed. “This building has a lot of which is part of the area possibilities,” said Nagle. where a new event space See TCC pg 6

VFW from pg 2 State Rep. Dave Zimmerman also noted Brower’s dedication to the community, and he pointed out the connections between the cando attitude of agricultural communities, such as the ELANCO area, and the armed services. He presented the post with a citation that honored the history of the VFW throughout Pennsylvania. Tim Bender, mayor of New Hol-
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker brought a certificate of recognition and a flag that had been flown over the United States Capitol in honor of the post. “Thank you to each of you. You are the true heroes among us,” he said, adding that the members had taken an oath to defend the Constitution and the freedoms Americans enjoy and noting that May 15 was also Armed Forces Day.

has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “1970-71 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.” Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine,

The organization, which is now in its 17th year, offers classes in a variety of disciplines for 3-year-olds to adults. Lessons are available in dance classes including all levels of jazz, ballet, creative movement, hip-hop, acrobatics, and modern dance, along with music, theater, and acting. In addition, Cavod is now livestreaming classes from each studio. “You can attend a live virtual class from your home,” noted Dienner. “It’s very state of the art, so it looks like you’re right in the classroom.” Teachers will be on hand to meet potential students at the open house. Dienner said the event will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who will broadcast live, and more. Free food

options will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. Lickity Split will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session, as well as ice cream treats for purchase. A special drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod for those who qualify. Regular performances will continue to be a highlight of the event. This year, Dienner has lined up music, theater, and dance presentations every 30 minutes. In addition, every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses. A grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Dienner is looking forward to the event with enthusiasm. “We have grown. We’re excited. We’re open,” she shared. “We have made it through COVID, and we’re stronger than ever.” Readers who would like to know more may visit https://cavod.org. Ressler’s Mill Tour Pays Tribute To Local History BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We are a best-kept secret,” said Linda Taylor, a tour guide at Ressler’s Mill in Mascot, a small village located southeast of Leola. “Anyone who has an interest in Lancaster County history would enjoy a visit here.” There has been a mill on the property at 2900 Stumptown Road, Ronks, since the 1730s. The last family to run a mill there purchased the site in 1865. Three generations of Resslers worked the mill until 1977, when Franklin Ressler and his sister, Anna, ceased operations and moved to Landis Homes, taking one suitcase each. What they left behind - along with Franklin’s shrewd investments - has allowed the mill property to become a historical treasure in Lancaster County. “I know the mill, and the mill knows me,” said Franklin in a video that was made shortly before his death at age 92 in 1994. The mill also known as the Mascot Roller Mills - which processed both corn and wheat, was Franklin’s life work
from the time he completed high school, with the exception of three years in the 1940s when he served in the U.S. Air Force. The mill also served as the Mascot Post Office and a community hub from 1890 to sometime in the 1930s. The name “Mascot” is associated with the post office, approved by John Wanamaker, who was postmaster general when the post office was set up. According to Taylor, the name “Mascot” was based on a dog in a play that Jacob and Annie Ressler parents of Anna and Franklin - saw when they traveled to New York City to be married by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. During a tour, Taylor explained the workings of the mill, noting that grain was stored on the second floor. “(Grain) was loaded in a barrel and hoisted up using waterpower,” she noted, adding that water was channeled to run the water wheels and grinding stones. “In the early 1900s, the water wheels were replaced with water turbines,” explained Taylor. Conveyor belts took the meal upstairs to be sifted,

with finer product used for food and coarser meal becoming animal feed. After Anna and Franklin moved out, the home was preserved as they left it for the sake of history. Among the artifacts they left behind is the Conestoga wagon bell Anna used to summon Franklin for lunch. Visitors can also see the summer kitchen where meals were cooked and the
root cellar, which can keep eggs and butter at a constant temperature year-round. The children’s ice skates and the wedding flowers that belonged to Annie, Franklin and Anna’s mother, preserved in wax, are also on display. The Ressler Mill is currently open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Wednesday through Saturday. More information may be found at www.resslermill.com.

Phase one construction will convert the gymnasium into event space. “The plan is to get a new roof,” said Nagle, who noted grants have been secured to complete that task. “We will move the insulation outside so we can expose the 1920s construction to restore the history of the room.” Phase two will address the bathrooms and redo the floor. Nagle said grants to complete those projects have been received as well. Nagle added that The Factory also has plans to further extend its reach. “The desire is to open a restaurant in the corner of the building,” he explained, noting that talks are ongoing to explore the opportunity with a successful county eatery. A commercial kitchen could be used to train local

residents in marketable skills, along with providing a gathering place to work and connect with others. The restaurant could also cater events at TCC, such as baby showers, weddings, and church retreats. “It will be space for the community, and it will help drive revenue for us and give us workforce development,” said Nagle. Nagle noted that although COVID interrupted Project Activate, the concepts that were presented have gained traction. “(These ideas) have a lot of potential,” he said.
