Jean Kilheffer Hess, executive director of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), could not help but share a “fun fact” when asked about the organization’s upcoming annual Storytelling Night. “No one knows what the storytellers will say ahead of time,” divulged Hess, who explained that neither the planners of the event nor the storytellers discuss story topics. “Interweaving of stories happens spontaneously,” noted Hess, adding, “Invariably it comes together in a beautiful way.”

The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. When “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was

In addition to his work for MCC, Cruz has had a varied career, which includes being an associate pastor. His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before teaching English and German at Lancaster Mennonite High School. She is a freelance writer, and her book about Bird-in-Hand, which is subtitled “50 Years of Smucker Family Hospitality, 1968-2018,” delves into the origins and growth of the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant and Hotel and other associated businesses. Hess noted that she hopes the event will change how attendees and viewers see their own stories. “Annual Storytelling Night helps people recognize the incredible gift of our stories,” she said. “It honors everyday lived experiences of people in our communities.” She added that the event is a step toward the LMHS vision of “a world where people reflect on their own stories and learn to value the stories of others across boundaries.” Readers who would like to know more may visit www.lmhs.org.

Storytelling Night, which was first suggested by an LMHS volunteer about 10 years ago, will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. Hess said the format is simple, but carefully prescribed. “The storytellers alternate and each tells a series of four-minute stories,” she explained, adding that the event has proven popular for LMHS. The free presentation will also be livestreamed at www.bit.ly/AMN21. LMHS welcomes donations to support the event’s mission to preserve history through storytelling. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author of “The Bird-inHand Story,” were chosen to speak. Hess explained that each was invited because of his or her contributions to Mennonite communities. “Each brings rich life experiences,” she noted. “They have pursued very different professional work, but a common thread is caring for people and meeting their needs.”

The Little Library That Could BY ANN MEAD ASH

When the Leola Branch Library closed in the fall of 2020, Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries and head of the Brave Kids Learning Center located in the Together Community Center

Neff had dreamed of having a Little Free Library at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “We love books and wanted to make it easy for local families to get them,” shared Neff. With enough books to jumpstart such an endeavor, Neff reached out to Evan Lapp to create a

structure to hold the books. “(Lapp) is retired and talented and caring,” said Neff, who sent Lapp photos of what she wanted the Little Free Library to look like. In December of 2020, Lapp brought the finished bookcase to TCC. In March of 2021, the Little Free Library at TCC was placed just to the left of the entrance. “ We call it the Braves Box,” said Neff. “The idea is to take a book and leave a book or take a book and share it with a friend when you’re done,” said Neff. “That’s what little libraries are for.” Factory Ministries volunteer Marie Glass helped procure a stamp so that each book bears the Little Free Library mark. Neff has divided the bookcase for ease of use. “The bottom shelf is mostly kids’ (books),” she said. “The top shelf is adults and teens. (The Little Free Library) is open anytime.”

The Braves Box proved popular almost immediately. “We are constantly refilling it,” said Neff, who noted that donors have kept the supply of books for children plentiful. “Right now, we could use some more adult books,” she noted, adding that hardcover children’s books are also on her wish list. “(Those books) are expensive for our families

to buy,” she stated. The Braves Box is registered with the Little Free Library organization at https://littlefreelibrary.org. More information about The Factory Ministries may be found at https://thefactory ministries.com. Readers with specific questions may email karla@thefactoryministries.com or lisa_eckert@pequeavalley.org.

Karla Neff is happy to offer a Little Free Library to children and adults who visit the Together Community Center in Paradise.

He added that limbs can cost as much as $85,000. The mechanical hand that IronLeg hopes to purchase for Shawn will have advanced technology, allowing him to control the hand from his stump. Matt said Iron-Leg will need to raise $10,000 to help make that purchase. To raise those funds, IronLeg is planning a benefit golf tournament for Saturday, Sept. 11. Matt acknowledged that the event is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and noted that three of the organizers are veterans. He said that a large flag will be part of the event. The tournament will be held at The Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy, and will include a silent auction Darren Hershock (left), Parker Millhouse (center), and and dinner. Parker’s fifth and current prosthesis sports camo on the material that fits around his stump. Matt said Parker enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. “He uses his arms all the time,” said Matt. “He’s very muscular.” “I climbed a giant rope,” Parker said of a recent activity. Parker is the poster child for Iron-Leg Corp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a goal of helping raise funds to help children obtain needed prosthetics and receive therapy to learn to use them. “We want to get the more advanced prosthetics (for children),” explained Matt, who told the story of a youngster named Shawn, who lives in York and is currently being helped by the organization. Matt learned about Shawn when he read an article about him online and was able to contact Shawn’s mother. “(In the) article … his mom was saying

Parker had gone to Schreiber for physical therapy to learn to use his prosthesis. “We were happy to raise money for them,” said Matt of the center. Currently, Iron-Leg has an eight-member board that meets regularly. Matt hopes to see the board expand in the future, and he has learned of an organization that works to recycle prosthetics that IronLeg might be able to partner with. “As we grow, we will try to network,” he said.

will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Organizers have invited Shawn to be present at the tournament. More information about the tournament may be found at www.ironleg.org or by emailing info@ironleg.org. According to Matt, the organization started with a charity boxing match hosted by Bucket List Boxers in September of 2020. After some consideration, organizers decided to donate the funds to Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development.

“We want to take our faith out beyond the walls of the church,” said Sally Englerth, one of the volunteers from Freedom Life Church who participated in a day of community service locally as part of the nationwide observance of Serve Day on July 10. According to www.serveday.com, the day provides churches across the world with opportunities to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness. It is based on Mark 10:45, which reads, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Volunteer Larry Fuller affirmed, “We want to serve the Lord and serve the community.” Freedom Life currently has two locations, the main

campus in Christiana and another campus in Centre County. Volunteers from both campuses took part in the projects. In Chester County, volunteers partnered with Good Works to assist with an ongoing construction project in Coatesville. Lancaster County volunteers took part in a cleanup at Muddy Run Park, where they cleared trails by cutting branches, moving rocks and pulling weeds and picked up trash on the site’s disc golf course and campground. Centre County campus volunteers worked in Unionville Park painting the gazebo and pavilion and pulling weeds. Main campus volunteers worked at Octorara JuniorSenior High School in Atglen, where they cleaned up the school’s greenhouse. Volunteers also reorganized a storage space in the school. “We did weeding around the greenhouse, and (other volunteers) painted the dugout,” said Fuller, explaining that the school provided the church with a list of jobs that needed to be completed.
