Pequea Valley

Band show to focus on Foo Fighters

When Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band director Rob Corrao introduced the music of Foo Fighters, a band that took its name from a World War II term for unidentified flying objects, to the members of the marching band, some of them asked, “Who are the Foo Fighters?” After a few days of band camp, Corrao felt the students were more familiar with the group’s music. “Now that we have been marching it … listening to (it), and playing it, they seem to be getting into it,” he reported. “(The music is) fast and exciting.”

Corrao, along with assistant director Michael Eckersley and color guard director Jennifer Bilby, gathered with eight color guards and 15 musicians at the school to practice the drill for this year’s program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on from July 29 through Aug. 1 and 8 a.m. to noon on Aug 2.

Corrao said he was inspired to look into Foo Fighters’ music when he heard the group was on tour. “They had some arrangements that were pretty good that we could use for the band,” he said. The program will open with “All My Life,” followed by “Learn to Fly,” and conclude with “The Pretender.” Standout moments

in the drill include opening the show with the entire band moving in pinwheels and other circular movements, along with follow-the-leader formations put in place by drill designer Ryan Kriebel. “It’s a good visual opener, and it’s really fast,” said Corrao. “I think it’s going to get everybody fired up.” The drum majors

are Maddie Heverin and Lana Willenbrock. Cam Frank serves as sergeant-at-arms. Willenbrock will perform a trumpet feature in “Learn to Fly.”

Heverin said that she’s enjoying working with the music. “It can be intense, but it’s fun to play and listen to,” she said, adding that the tempo is a challenge.

Corrao noted that the way the music is written makes marching complicated. “It makes counting harder,” agreed Heverin, who added that circles are not easy to march either.

Bilby said the color guard will use 6-foot flags in a variety of colors. “(The guard members) look forward to doing tosses and

Libraries are not always quiet places. On the afternoon of Aug. 1, the volume in the Perella Schoolhouse at the Intercourse Library was turned up significantly when Tammi Hessen, assisted by Jami Karr, presented “Drum for FUN” to a gathering of about 15 children and parents.

Hessen kicked off the presentation with a repetitive chant using the words “chicka boom.” As the gathering repeated the rhythmic phrases, Hessen asked, “Are you ready to play violin?” To looks of surprise, she noted that she

Woodcrest Retreat, a camp providing a variety of experiences including day, resident, adventure, and Conquerors special needs camp, is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County. In 2021, the camp served more than 1,800 children. According to Jason Martin, operations director at Woodcrest, by 2023 that number had increased to more than 1,900. This year, more than

2,000 participated. To make it possible for all those children to attend camp, Woodcrest Retreat holds several fundraisers, including a golf tournament and auction. About $80,000 a year needs to be raised to cover the camp budget. For the last 14 years, the camp has also held a benefit 3D archery shoot. In 2023, nearly 150 shooters took part in the event.

The 15th annual shoot will be held at Woodcrest, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, on Saturday,

Seniors plan meeting

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will gather on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. After a meeting, the group will engage in a price-guessing game based on a popular TV show, with

refreshments to follow. Guests are welcome. There is a registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.

Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the recreation and benefit of

area residents age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips. For more information, call Jill at 717-239-1530.

learning new tricks. I try to change it up every year,” she said.

To break up the intensity of the learning process, Willenbrock and Heverin planned special dress-up days, which this year included wild hats and socks day, pink day, USA day, and beach day. Tuesday was deemed Taco Tuesday,

with seniors dressing as the taco shell, juniors as the meat, directors as the sour cream, and other classes designated as lettuce, tomato, and salsa. Evening activities, such as a miniature golf outing, were also planned for marchers during the week of band camp.

The construction in an

area adjoining the PVHS football field continues to make practice space tight for the marchers. Flexibility is key this year, according to Corrao, who noted that an adjacent area will be lined for the band to use while other activities are occurring on the football field.

The 2024 PVHS band will

perform its fall drill during football games and march in the New Holland Fair parade.

Corrao added that he is especially grateful to band parents who bring snacks and water to band members during camp. “I really appreciate their support,” he noted.

Ahhh, barbecue

New Holland Summer Fest coordinator Nate Martin likes to share the story of how the New Holland community pulled together to help a contestant at the 2023 event. “A team called me on Friday,” recalled Martin, who noted the Smoke Craft barbecue team was on its way from Virginia to New Holland to compete in Summer Fest. “They had trailer problems, but they wanted to get here to do the competition no matter what it took,” Martin shared.

After several phone calls, Martin learned that the team’s trailer could not be repaired. He quickly called Meadow Creek Barbecue Supply, and the business offered a smoker for the team to use. Smoke Craft team members grabbed the bare necessities they needed for competing and headed north in a pickup truck.

“The Summer Fest committee picked up the smoker and set up a spot for (the Smoke Craft team near Kinzer Avenue),” shared Martin, who added that other competing teams and Summer Fest sponsors pulled together the other items Smoke Craft needed. “(Smoke Craft) had never cooked on one of these cookers before, but (the team)

ended up getting reserve grand champion,” said Martin.

The 25th annual New Holland Summer Fest will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24, at New Holland Community Park on East Jackson Street, New Holland. The event will feature a State Champion Barbecue (SCB) competition on Aug. 23 and the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) competition on Aug. 24.

This year, Martin hopes to line up more than 60 teams for the two competitions. “Friday night we hold a cookoff sanctioned by the SCA,” explained Martin. “The winner of that is automatically invited to the SCA World Championship at Fort Worth in Texas.” The main Summer Fest competition is the KCBS event, which usually involves four

main categories - chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket. “Summer Fest is unique because we add three more,” noted Martin, who added that sausage, whole hog, and chef’s choice are also part of the competition. This year, in celebration of the 25th anniversary, Martin plans to name the chef’s choice award after founder Chuck Sheffield. Entries are judged in a double-blind test by KCBS qualified judges. “Entries are scored on appearance, tenderness, and taste,” said Martin, who added that the best entrant in the four categories is the grand champion.

To involve the community more in the competition, coordinators have scheduled a variety of activities during the fest. The park will open at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, and by 11 a.m.,

food vendors, including the Summer Fest stand selling chicken barbecue dinners, will be open. Stands selling ice cream, seafood, and barbecue will be on-site, and the Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) canteen will sell burgers, hot dogs, and french fries.

Martin said that a community s’mores event is planned for the evening of Aug. 23 and that The Nomads will play live in the park from 6 to 9 p.m. that evening.

On Saturday, Kids’ Day will be held, featuring a dunk tank, face painting, and a candy drop from the GSFR ladder truck. Martin also hopes to provide free hot dogs for lunch for children in attendance.

As in the past, all funds raised by Summer Fest will benefit GSFR. For more information, including the complete schedule, visit https://gsfr39.net/ summerfest or search for “New Holland Summer Fest” on Facebook.

The meal is free and will be served in the handicapped-accessible Smith Fellowship Hall. For additional information, call the church at 717-687-6619.

More than 60 teams are scheduled to take part in the Summer Fest competition in the New Holland Community Park.

was just kidding. “We will do some drumming today,” she said, gesturing to the nearly 20 West African drums set up in a circle around the room.

Before the group began drumming together, Hessen asked participants to look at their hands. “Your hands do a lot for you,” she noted, pointing out the daily chores humans use their hands to complete. She pointed out the circular tops of the drums where the hands would strike and encouraged the children and adults to begin. Loud raucous drumming ensued for a few moments before Hessen reminded audience members to breathe as they played.

To teach the group about the background of West African drumming, Hessen suggested a trip to the country of Mali. Karr picked up a map and pointed out the continent of Africa and the distance it lies from North America. “It will take us about 15 hours to fly,” she said, adding, “Just as when you read a book, you get to go places and imagine things, we are going to pretend that we’re going there.” Karr pointed out that the travelers should expect it to be hot and rainy in Mali.

Hessen taught the group members the West African name for the drums. “It’s called djembe,” she said,

and she taught them a song to help them remember the name of the drum. Hessen also noted that the djembe is made of hardwood and that each drum is made from one tree trunk. “It’s a long process to carve them,” she said, adding that

the drum is covered in goat skin. As she worked with the group to teach participants about bass and tone, a semblance of rhythm began to emerge.

Hessen and Karr also talked about a special song and dance associated with

of casting. Those who did not volunteer to dance drummed along to the song.

Following the song and dance, Hessen directed the group members to close their eyes and count to three to find them -

selves back in Intercourse. She noted that North American rhythms exist as well and asked for volunteers to suggest some words that could be used to create drum music. One girl suggested they drum to the words “I love

Larkin” because Larkin is the name of her puppy. Hessen closed the presentation with a question-and-answer period. Both she and Karr answered a question about how they got involved in West African drumming. “I was in a steel drum band,” pointed out Hessen, who said she became aware of a group in Baltimore that played djembes. When she heard the group play, she was inspired

to take lessons and to travel to West Africa to learn more. Karr said that she became interested when she heard of Bumbada! Women Drummers, a group led by Hessen. “I fell in love with it and ended up joining the group,” she said. Up-to-date information about library activities may be found at https:// intercourselib.org.
