District Residents Invited To Mother-Son Night Of Fun By Dayna M. Reidenouer

By all accounts, the inaugural Mother-Son Night of Fun that was held in 2018 at Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, was a rousing success. “It was a full house,” said event cocoordinator Angie Schlagnhaufer. “They loved it.” “We had about 200 people,” added co-coordinator Trina Armstrong. Schlagnhaufer and Armstrong are planning for another strong turnout for this year’s Mother-Son Night of Fun, which will be held at the school on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, has been set as the snow makeup date. Boys in kindergarten through eighth grade who live in the Solanco School District and their mothers or adult female family figures are invited to attend the Night of Fun. Activities have

been planned to appeal to a variety of interests. Board and card games, as well as a Wii gaming system, will be set up in the school lobby. Minute to Win It games will be located in the hallway to the cafeteria, where a disc jockey will play music for dancing and refreshments will be available. The gymnasium will feature basketball, a lacrosse toss, four square, and mini bowling. Selfies to commemorate the occasion will be encouraged at a special photobooth. Based on last year’s event, the organizers have added more cornhole and Minute to Win It games, and the basketball games will be adjusted to make them accessible for younger students. Schlagnhaufer also noted that organizers are making an effort to encourage adult interaction with the children they accompany. “We want to get moms involved rather than chit-chatting with each other on the sidelines,” she said. There is a cost to attend the See Night Of Fun pg 3

Consignment Sale To Support Peru Mission Fund Calling All Painters! 84 S. Lime St., Quarryville, will offer the Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) Program from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays from March 16 to April 20. The WISE Program is a wellness and prevention program for adults age 60 and older. Classes include a mixture of small group work, individual exercises, and discussion. Topics include factors that contribute to the aging process and how to live longer, happier, and healthier lives; what it means to age as a member of society and as an individual; exploring diversity and developing an appreciation of differences; medication misuse among older adults and how to avoid it; substance misuse and understanding the disease of addiction; and how people may improve and enhance their quality of life as they age. The program is free. To register, call 717-786-4770.

The one thing that stays the same at the annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale hosted by the mission team at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) is that it is always different, and the organizers never know what to expect. Last year’s event featured items from 18 vendors. One woman donated her late husband’s tools, said Dan Henry, who organizes the sale with his wife, Boni Henry. “Folks have been encouraged to bring ‘nuts and bolts’ types of items that they no longer need and would like to sell,” Boni

explained, listing tools previously stored in sheds, garages, and basements; hunting clothes and supplies; yardwork and landscaping tools; small equipment; antiques; books; games; and puzzles as ideas of items to consign. Firearms will not be accepted. “This year, we are emphasizing collections such as baseball cards, old Sports Illustrated magazines, vintage jewelry, books, old toys, Hummel plates, coins, and a Park City pewter collection including a carousel,” she said. “I tell people I have no clue if (their item) will sell; just bring it and try it,” Dan added.

The Quarryville Library Art Committee annually hosts an art competition open to the public. This year, paintings will be the focus, and amateur and professional painters age 16 and older are invited to enter up to two artworks each, with an entry fee per painting. Cash prizes of $100 for first place and $50 for second place will be awarded in the categories of landscape, still life, and living things. The subject matter must be appropriate for public viewing in a gallery used for children’s programs. Every painting should be framed or mounted and ready for hanging with either wire or sawtooth hangers. The entries will be displayed in the C.X. Carlson Cultural Center at the library through Friday, Feb. 21. The artwork may be dropped off on Friday, Jan. 10, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. or on Saturday, Jan. 11, from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the winners will be announced at 2 p.m. The artwork may be offered for sale, but every item must remain hanging through the end of the exhibit. For more information about the contest, readers may email library@quarryvillelibrary.org.

just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class.

Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and gettogethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. More information about GiGi’s Playhouse may be found by visiting www.gigisplayhouse.org /lancaster or searching for “GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers who have questions may call 717-723-6861. Pictured on front: Looking forward to the open house and ribbon cutting to be held at the new GiGi’s Playhouse on Oregon Pike are Jen Voshell (far left), holding Jacob, and Jessica Kinsey (far right), holding Nathaniel. The open house will be held on Jan. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. GiGi’s Playhouse in Lancaster will be the first facility of its kind in Pennsylvania serving children and adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis,” said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families).” A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her

daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree

recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds

to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a

Consignment Sale from pg 1 The Hummel plates that will be offered in the sale were collected by MOPC member Joan Probst, who liked the images of children and animals. Probst was careful to retain the paperwork guaranteeing the plates’ authenticity, and she may even have some of the original packaging. Probst started her collection nearly five decades ago. “They were back when my kids were small, and my baby’s 50,” she related. The sale will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at MOPC, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. Saturday, Jan. 18, has been set as the snow date. In contrast with craft shows, vendors do not need to be present at the event, although they are welcome to attend.

“One year, a guy was here tying flies,” Boni recalled. Dan related that when Dick Keene brought in a collection of hunting decoys, he stayed for the day. “He had a good time talking to people,” Dan said. Items may be dropped off at MOPC between 4 and 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. Readers may also contact Boni at 717-4051113 or bohphen@outlook.com to schedule an alternate dropoff time. Boni would like potential consignors to contact her regardless so that she and Dan can plan effectively to accommodate everyone. When items are sold, the consignor will receive 80% of the sale price. The other 20% will go to the Peru Mission Fund. Items may also be donated to the consignment sale, with all of the

proceeds going to the Peru Mission Fund. MOPC tries to send mission teams to Tamshiyacu, Peru, at least once a year to work with a sister congregation there. The teams also provide money for medical supplies, and they have contributed to water sanitation efforts in the rural village. The Henrys expressed their hope that community members will support the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale by contributing items and by shopping. “It’s fun - something to do in January,” Boni said. “It’ll cure your cabin fever,” Dan added. For more information about the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Consignment Sale, readers may contact Boni at the aforementioned phone number and email address or call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

Kevin M. Ressler

Lancaster, will replace Sue Suter, who is retiring after five years of leading United Way of Lancaster County. In his five years leading Meals on Wheels, Ressler led a team to build upon nearly 50 years of established practice, expanding service offerings and improving the quality and consistency of service. Under his leadership, Meals on Wheels expanded its mission’s focus to concentrate on impact rather than output numbers while increasing volunteer and donor support. The organization also consolidated and merged other Meals on Wheels programs to streamline workflow and ensure

longevity and sustainability. This year, the organization has served more than 1,000 community members with 180,000plus meals by coordinating more than 40,000 volunteer hours with an average of 375 monthly volunteers. TriStarr Staffing assisted the nine-member search committee in its national search, which included nearly 100 candidates from all areas of the country. Ressler has a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Mennonite University and earned a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary. Next year, Ressler will attend the Mastering Leadership

Dynamics program at The BB&T Leadership Institute through a scholarship given by BB&T market president and United Way of Lancaster County board member James Malfregeot. During the past half-century, The BB&T Leadership Institute and its predecessor firm, Farr Associates, have developed and refined approaches to business leadership through collaborative work with clients throughout the United States. The BB&T Leadership Institute provides organizations with a leadership development partner who seeks to help create dynamic and effective leaders, increase employee retention and improve the bottom line.

Master Watershed Steward Trainings Planned The Master Watershed Steward (MWS) program is a collaborative effort between Penn State Extension; the Conservation Districts of Lebanon, Lancaster, and Dauphin counties; and local conservation groups. It is similar to the Master Gardener program and is designed to train people in a formal way about the basics of water resource stewardship, creating an energized and educated group of citizens. Currently, the MWS program operates in 18 counties across the state and has 302 volunteers. Penn State Extension is recruiting 20 to 25 interested people for the Class of 2020, which will be a joint program between Lancaster, Lebanon and

Dauphin counties. The class will consist of 40 hours of training on various topics, including water quality, stream health, groundwater, native plants, and recreational resources. Once this part of the training is complete, trainees will perform 50 hours of volunteer service on selected projects such as organizing and executing stream cleanups, designing and installing demonstration rain gardens, assisting in stream restorations, and organizing educational workshops addressing topics such as rain barrels, pollution prevention, invasive plant control, and storm water management. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome. Individuals under age 18 must be accompanied by a

guardian or adult. The program will start on Tuesday, March 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will continue every Tuesday through May. There will be several Saturday field trips as well. Informational sessions will be held in January, and all sessions will begin at 7 p.m. Sessions will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Lebanon County Extension Office, 2120 Cornwall Road, Lebanon; on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Dauphin County Extension Office, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin; and on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Lancaster County Extension Office, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Final Preparations Underway For Pennsylvania Farm Show

Pequea Valley Sportsman 195 Rawlinsville Rd., Willow Street (717) 464-9054

By Chelsea Peifer

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be over for many, but for Manheim brothers Tyler, Eric, and Drew Zimmerman and hundreds of other people across the state, life is about to kick into full speed as they make final preparations for their part in the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The 104th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled to take place from Saturday through Saturday, Jan. 4 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-year-old Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time,

New Foundation Program Unveiled The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has unveiled a new program designed for educational and conservation partners to connect students and teachers in Lancaster County to fun and meaningful learning opportunities outdoors. Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) aim to support high-quality teaching and learning by actively engaging students in building knowledge and meaning through hands-on experiences. These multistage activities have a goal of increasing understanding and stewardship of watersheds and related ecosystems. The new Outdoor Learning Network Initiative (OLNI) is a

partnership of the Conestoga Valley, Ephrata Area, and Columbia Borough school districts; Millersville University; Lancaster County Conservation District; and Stroud Water Research Center. OLNI partners met at Conestoga Valley High School recently to review goals, expectations, and roles of each participating group. The current OLNI will continue through spring of 2021. It is being funded and organized by the Pisces Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network.

Knoll Writes Article For Journal Clermont Elementary School first-grade teacher Jessica Knoll has published an article in The Elementary STEM Journal, a publication of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. Her story is titled “Why Do We Wear Jackets, An Investigation by First-Grade Students.” In the article, Knoll wrote about a project her students performed in which they used their problemsolving skills to better understand how the materials jackets are made from, and the construction of jackets, retain body heat and provide warmth. Students used aluminum foil, construction paper, wrapping paper, cotton balls, felt and other materials to create jackets for water bottles containing heated water. Students monitored the temperature of the water inside the bottles and documented how much the temperature decreased over time. Knoll provided students with information on insulators and conductors, and students learned about which materials better kept the water warm for the longest periods of time and which materials provide better warmth in different weather conditions.
