How to be mindful of wildlife over the winter BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
I
f you reside in Lancaster County’s rural communities, you are likely well acquainted with the area’s wildlife. Whether you own a farm in the Buck or live among the scenic fields that surround Strasburg and Millersville, you have probably become familiar with the herds of deer that meander onto your property. Even those who live in the Southern End’s suburban communities are often visited by foxes and squirrels that want a snack from their bird feeders. The patterns of wild animals change during the cold months, however, and being mindful of their behavior can make the winter season safer for both you and your neighbors out in nature. Lisa Sanchez is a park naturalist with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Every winter, Sanchez travels across the county to educate the public on the seasonal
changes that occur in nature. She also debunks several misconceptions about local wildlife. “This is a popular time of year for people to feed birds in their backyards. People always ask me how to get rid of the hawks who prey on the cardinals and chickadees who visit their bird feeders,” Sanchez said. “You can’t; it’s a part of nature, and hawks are protected by law. I always jokingly tell them, ‘Well, it’s still a bird feeder.’” Another common misunderstanding that Sanchez frequently addresses is the migration patterns of birds. Songbirds such as tree swallows, wood thrushes and red-winged blackbirds fly south for the winter due to a lack of mosquitos and other insects that make up their diet. Other birds have adapted their diet to rely on seeds and berries, making an annual migration unnecessary. Many years ago, robins were seen as a sign of spring’s return; today, these birds can be seen throughout the winter as they scrounge for

When many people hear the term “professional wrestling,” they picture the ostentatious getups and dramatic performances associated with companies such as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The professional wrestling promotion is notorious for hosting extravagant shows that combine athleticism with intense theatrics, the likes of which have turned eccentric characters like Hulk Hogan into household names. Although most people view
professional wrestling as nothing more than a display of impressive stunts, Lancaster residents Jesus Rodriguez and Chris Dreisbach see the art form as a means to impact the community in a positive way. Rodriguez has been active in the world of wrestling for many years, serving as both a wrestler and an announcer for organizations such as WWE and Combate Global during his career. After his time in the ring, Rodriguez worked as a trainer in wrestling academies across the United States, and he See Wrestling pg 5

worms and wild berries to eat. “One thing humans often forget is that animals migrate for food,” said Sanchez. “Only humans migrate to get warm. Birds are much more adaptable than us in cold weather because of those wonderful feathers.” Sanchez noted that individuals who attend her programs are often surprised to learn that bears do not simply hibernate for the entirety of winter. Although bears consume more food and rest on cold days, they usually emerge from their dens if there is a spike in temperature. Female bears also remain awake to give birth to cubs and raise their young. Bats are one of Lancaster’s true hibernators, and they remain inactive until their favorite food sources return in the spring. Sanchez advises hikers to avoid caves during the winter, as disturbing bats in hibernation could force them to expend their limited supply of energy. The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation offers a variety of winter programs that combine wildlife education with family activities. Sanchez and other park naturalists regularly hold full-moon hikes and crafting activities at parks throughout the county, in addition to weekly programs for homeschooled students. materials from GriefShare, a program that offers resources to help those who have lost a loved one. During each meeting, participants will discuss a specific topic, such as learning to adapt to patterns and routines that are often altered by experiencing the loss of a spouse or family member. The GriefShare curriculum will highlight the topic of the meeting with an informational video, which will be followed by group discussion and activities included in the GriefShare workbook. The sessions will be led by Ron Harris and his wife, Sandy. Ron has previously participated in multiple GriefShare groups throughout the county, and he introduced the program to Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church last year. Although the church had offered the series in the past, it was discontinued after the previous group leader became unable to host the meetings. Due to Ron’s experience
with the program, both as a participant and a trained group leader, he volunteered to reinstate the group to give other people in the community the support he once received. Ron also wished to make the program accessible for those who are unable to register for other groups in the area due to their limited number of spaces. Ron first joined a GriefShare group four years ago after the death of his late wife, Marjorie, to whom he had been married for 54 years. “One of the most challenging parts of dealing with grief is feeling isolated from others. Many people don’t know what to say, and they feel uncomfortable because they don’t know how to face it,” Ron said. “We talk about that, and we can relate to one another. My family was a wonderful support, but I don’t know how I would have made it without joining a group.” Sandy joined Ron’s group at Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church last year, and she
offered to assist with the program this year to accommodate female group members who feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with another woman. Before retiring in 2017, Ron worked as a pupil services coordinator for Penn Manor School District for 36 years. Although he worked closely with school psychologists and guidance counselors over the course of his career, Ron is not a licensed psychologist; he will provide participants with information about services that he is unable to provide during GriefShare sessions. “I only require that people join the group with open minds and realize that sometimes we don’t have the answers,” Ron said. “Grief is a journey you have to take, and at the end of the path, there is a purpose to living on.” Registration will be accepted at any point in the series, and workbooks will be provided at no cost. To register for the program, email Ron at sonrize44@yahoo.com.

Don’t distract the dog! Wrestling from pg 1
BY ANN MEAD ASH
It started with a Facebook post that alerted readers as to what to do if approached by a lone dog in a service vest. The post advised following the dog because the canine’s person might be in trouble. While the advice seemed reasonable, suspicion of such posts alerted this feature writer to seek an opinion from the staff of United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dog program. Puppy coordinator Kristy Conrad confirmed that the advice is good. “If a service dog is separated from their person, that should be a reason for concern,” she stated. “If (the dog) turns around to take you, you should follow because the person could be in trouble,” added service dog program manager Lori Breece. These answers led to discussion of general service dog etiquette that respects the dog’s owner or handler - things we should all be aware of when we see a dog working in public. UDS service dogs wear colored vests to alert others to the dog’s working status. According to Conrad, UDS’ service dogs and service dogs in training wear red vests, while ambassador dogs wear blue and facility dogs wear purple. Often service dog vests are printed with words admonishing members of the public not to pet the dog or to ask before interacting. “It should be standard to ask the handler, ‘May I pet your dog?’” stated UDS service dog trainer Susan Vollmar. “It should always be the person (you engage) first, and not the dog,” added Breece. Vollmar went further, noting, “The public should not be soliciting the dog’s attention (in any way),” she said. “Don’t make noises. Don’t talk. Don’t look. Don’t touch.” The reasons behind such warnings go straight to the dog’s purpose in serving its person. “What if the dog is doing something for their person?” pointed out Breece, who noted that the dog may be focused on retrieving anything from a cane to a credit card from a wallet. “The task the dog is doing is important to the person’s independence,” she said. “Just don’t distract the dog.”
Conrad suggested thinking of the dog in the same way one would any other assistive device. “You wouldn’t hinder someone using their wheelchair or cane,” she stated. Breece stated that the same advice holds for service dogs in training. “Out of respect for the handler, please ask,” she said. “Maybe they are doing some work or training, and if you try to play with the dog, you distract the dog.” Breece made it clear that not all disabilities are readily apparent. “Don’t assume because you can’t see the disability that the person doesn’t have one,” she said, noting that UDS has clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), who really need their service dogs. “PTSD is a medical diagnosis a service dog can assist with,” she said, noting that one client almost gave up using a dog because of comments made to him about not needing one. Instead, he persevered and has become an advocate for the program. Individuals wishing to learn more may email lorig@udservices.org, call 717-715-8753, or visit https:// udservices.org.

has traveled to nearly every continent on the globe as an instructor. Rodriguez first visited Lancaster to receive treatment at Blueprints for Addiction Recovery, a local rehabilitation center owned by Dreisbach. Dreisbach had also previously worked with WWE to benefit addiction recovery programs, and he and Rodriguez connected over their shared love of wrestling. In September 2022, Rodriguez and Dreisbach founded Three Legacies Wrestling, a professional wrestling outfit located on South Centerville Road in Lancaster. In addition to training local wrestlers, Three Legacies Wrestling has reintroduced the sport to the Lancaster community by regularly hosting shows across the county. One of Three Legacies’ main goals is to change the public’s perception of substance abuse disorders, and Rodriguez and Dreisbach regularly use the organization as a platform to raise money for recovery programs. “As we grow, we can also educate people on the recovery process and what it entails,” Rodriguez said. “We also have a couple students in recovery. Urig takes over Solanco girls’ hoops program The basketball season is officially underway, and the Solanco girls’ program is under new guidance. Brian Urig, who was the head coach for the Oxford girls from 2002 to 2012 and 2016 to 2018, has replaced the late Chad McDowell, who guided Solanco the last nine seasons. Urig was also the boys’ head coach for both Kennett (from 2014 to 2017) and Avon Grove (from 1996 to 1999). “We have a young team with several players getting their first varsity minutes,” stated Urig. “We will focus on good defense to control tempo. Offense comes in streaks, but a solid defensive effort can be counted on.” Solanco won the L-L League Section 3 championships in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons under McDowell but has gotten off to a slow start this year. The girls, as of Dec. 27, 2023, are 0-5. Urig, who lives in Little Britain Township with his family, is a chemistry teacher at Oxford.
