Burns Night To Support Historic Church By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Burns Night, an evening of everything Scottish in honor of poet Robert Burns’ birthday, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Historic Beale Manor in Parkesburg. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will host the event. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social time to fiddle music by Tom Knapp, founder of local Celtic band Fire in the Glen. Piper Thompson McConnell will also provide music throughout the evening and will lead the haggis ceremony. Haggis, a traditional Scottish dish

made from a sheep’s stomach, will be part of the evening meal. It will be carried in as part of a procession that is accompanied by a reading of Burns’ “Address to the Haggis.” “People love (the ceremony). It’s kind of a grand thing,” said Donna McCool, treasurer and event committee co-chair for the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation. A full dinner will include a selection of Scottish foods, as well as haggis. After dinner, Clayton Margerum will present Burns’ narrative poem “Tam o’Shanter.” There will also be toasts and readings of Burns’ works. If asked whether they would be happy in a world without insects, some people might answer in the affirmative. However, such a scenario would be disastrous for Earth and its inhabitants, entomologists have said. “Insects are integral to the health of the planet and people,” explained Michael Skvarla, director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU). “They pollinate our crops and feed on pests, help decompose dead animals, form the base of food webs, and stabilize natural environments.” PSU Department of Entomology graduate students Brooke Lawrence and Ginamaria Roman Echevarria will offer a perspective on the worldwide decline of insects in their keynote presentation, “A World of Insects: The

The Arts at Millersville will present “We Shall Overcome - A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Winter Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Damien Sneed, who specializes in classical, jazz, and sanctified soul, recently premiered his new opera, “We Shall Overcome - Our Journey: 400 Years From Africa to Jamestown,” at Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium/Ronald O. Perelman Stage. The opera showcases musical styles from the African American diaspora from African rhythms to spirituals to gospel to jazz, all interwoven in the classical genre. Sneed has been touring “We Shall Overcome - A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” throughout the United States and Canada. Joining Sneed on tour is an ensemble of multi-genre vocalists, including Chenee Campbell, Anitra McKinney, Alicia PetersJordan, Linny Smith, and Markita Knight, and musicians Joel Tate, drums; Arthur Sutton, bass; and Marquéz Cassidy, keyboards. The ensemble will be joined on Jan. 24 by a special guest, the J. P. McCaskey High School gospel choir. “We Shall Overcome” is a joyous celebration reflecting on the triumphant and victorious moments during the United States’ history and showcasing the musical repertoire that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders. The musical selections are interwoven with spoken word from the recorded speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK). The production ties together music and culture elements that include traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway, and spirituals. Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, and “The Wiz” will be represented. Sneed has worked with jazz, classical, pop, and rhythm and blues legends, including the late Aretha Franklin and Jessye Norman. He is featured on Norman’s forthcoming and final recording, “Bound for the Promised Land,” on Albany Records. Sneed was also commissioned to compose a new chamber opera, “Marian’s Song,” about the life of Marian Anderson, for Houston Grand Opera, which will have its world premiere on Thursday, March 5, at the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Center. In addition to “Marian’s Song,” Sneed was commissioned to compose a symphony in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, with its world premiere slated for summer 2020 in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The J. P. McCaskey High School gospel choir is directed by Colette Stephens. The auditioned choir is a yearlong course that meets daily. In the course, students study inspirational choral music, various singing styles, and traditional composers such as Tommy Dorsey and James Cleveland as well as contemporary songwriters like Kirk Franklin, Byron Cage, and Hezekiah Walker. The students commit to a rigorous schedule of engagements and concerts throughout the year, and participation at all rehearsal activities and performances is mandatory. Tickets will be required for admission to the concert. Separate prices have been set for adults, for Millersville University (MU) students, and for all other students. A discount is available for groups of 10 or more people. Tickets may be purchased at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on MU’s campus from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Tied at 7-7 after eight minutes, Red Lion outscored the hosts in each of the next three quarters, including an 8-2 third quarter margin, to pull away. “Our focus has been to play defense and keep games in the 30’s and 40’s,” said McDowell. “When we do that, we give ourselves a chance to win. In the third quarter we met our defensive goals, but, with just two points, we struggled to score. We turned the ball over too many times and gave them extra opportunities.” Dombach again paced the offense, netting 13 points. Eshleman followed with ten points and grabbed a teamhigh eight boards. Ilynd Rapant was close behind with seven rebounds and tied Seiberlich with four points. Lasko (2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals) and Yoder (1 points, 2 rebounds) also contributed. “I thought Jade played well inside and Jenna key some key shots from the perimeter,” said McDowell. “Both of them had a good weekend. “In moving forward we need to take better care of the basketball,” he added. “We are giving our opponents extra opportunities. We also need to find an offensive rhythm and flow. “Basketball is a game of runs,” Long said. “They went on a run there at the end. We need to focus on getting consecutive stops and taking great shots on offense.” Austin Woods, with ten points in the first half and nine total rebounds, tied for game-high honors with 17 points. Zed Baker followed with eight points and hauled in a team-best 14 rebounds. In the consolation round on Saturday, the Mules dropped a 62-41 result against Manheim Central. Clinging to a 28-23 lead at the half, the Barons used a 20-7 fourth quarter run to pull away. Seven different players contributed to Manheim’s run while the Mules got fourth quarter three’s from Clary and Baker. “They picked up the defensive pressure and we did not react well,” said Long. “We are not coaching based on wins and losses. Our focus is to simply get better every day. We need to work on getting our teammates open on offense and making better decisions with the ball.” Woods netted 10 of his team-high 12 points in the first half. sudden victory win over Notre Dame Green Pond’s Evan Maag. He dropped a 7-1 decision in the consi-semis and claimed fifth place with a medical forfeit over Owen Rawls. Ironically enough, Nick Yannutz, at 195, also placed via a medical forfeit over Jace Bradbury. After receiving a bye, Yannutz scored a pair of falls before Bradbury hung a 16-4 major decision loss on the Solanco grappler. Yannutz posted his third fall of the tournament over Caesar Rodney’s Shamar Nelson and then topped Jason Sine (Notre Dame - Green Pond) to get to the consolation semis. After a 5-2 loss to Maximus Hale (Downingtown West), Yannutz met Bradbury again, placing with the medical forfeit. In their first match of the new year, the Mules collected a come-frombehind road win over Conestoga Valley, Thursday, January 2. Jackson Houghton’s (126) 6-4 decision, along with an 8-3 result by Ronnie Fulton (138) and Steven Williams’ 34 second fall at 138 put the visitors in front 12-3 early. The hosts, however, hit the meat of their lineup and won five of the next six bouts, including two falls and a forfeit, to pull ahead 28-18. Solanco, however, closed out the night with four straight falls. A fall by Yannutz at 195 interrupted CV’s middle of the match run and cut the lead to 22-18. After forfeiting at 220, Nate Neuhauser (285), Flatt (106), Weston Bare (113) and Jarod Fulton (120) pinned their way to a team victory. Four of those falls came in the first period. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Coming into their own Holiday Tournament with a 2-6 record overall, Solanco’s boys’ basketball team was poised to pick up win number three Friday, December 27. But a shot at the buzzer by Conestoga Valley’s Luke Rambaugh propelled the Bucks to a 43-42 come-from-behind win. Solanco’s Ryan Smith calmly drained a pair of free throws with 8.3 seconds left in the game and put the hosts back in front, 42-41. CV inbounded the ball to Rumbaugh who dribbled down the middle of the court, cut to his left, and tossed up an off-balanced runner that beat the buzzer for a thrilling victory. It was Rumbaugh’s only bucket of the night. “We forced a one footed runner outside the paint, which is exactly how we wanted to guard that,” said first year head coach David Long. The Mules jumped in front early in this one, sprinting to a 20-11 advantage early in the second quarter. The Bucks fought back, working a 20-5 run that gave them their first lead of the night, 29-27 with 4:49 left in the third. A pair of key triples helped the visitors to a 37-32 lead with eight minutes remaining. Back-to-back buckets, including a steal and a layup by Ethan Cleary, gave Solanco a 40-39 lead.

The spirit of Christmas was evident during the 2019 holiday season as local charities, churches and other organizations took part in charitable community service projects. Oxford Presbyterian Church (OPC) once again provided the ingredients for Christmas dinners for families in need in Oxford and the surrounding community, a tradition that goes back 60 years. As part of the annual effort, food boxes were given to 137 families. For two months prior to the distribution, congregation members, local schools and Cub Scout Pack 213 collected canned goods to fill the boxes. Additionally, local merchants provided financial support. The Chester County Food Bank donated all of the turkeys to be included in the boxes. Flowers Baking Company donated bread, and OPC provided small frozen chickens, eggs, butter and bread to top off the boxes. Herr’s Snack Factory donated the boxes. Approximately 75 community and church members, along with friends and Bethany Christian School’s sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classes, volun-

teered on the morning of Dec. 13 to help move, sort and count the food items. About 35 people came out later that evening to pack and organize the boxes for distribution. In spite of rainy weather on Dec. 14, volunteers handed out boxes or delivered them to the homes of families between 9 a.m. and noon. Pat’s Pizza donated pizza for the volunteers that day. The Christmas Food Box committee included Andy Arthur, Ila Barlow, Bev Hartgrove and project leader Lisa Koza. Ozzie Perez assisted with Spanish translation. OPC sexton Clyde Prigg, members of Oxford Area High School Helping Hands and Boy Scout Troop 44 also provided assistance. Neighborhood Services Center provided the names of the recipients, who were interviewed for eligibility. As part of another local effort, state Rep. Christina Sappey held a charitable item donation drive on Nov. 22 at Willowdale Town Center in Kennett Square to benefit local families during the holiday season. Pet-related items were also collected for the Brandywine SPCA. More than 100 local residents contributed items on the day of the drive. In addition to the SPCA, donations were

presented to David’s Drive 831, a charity that benefits local veterans; the Chester County Food Bank; and Green Drop, which collects donations of clothing and household items on behalf of several charities. Members of the Marine Corps League were on hand to collect items for their Toys for Tots program. Representatives from the other charities were also present to accept donations. Hundreds of children across southern Chester County received a new coat during the annual Warm Wishes coat distribution held at La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) on Dec. 10. While the holiday tradition is more than 10 years old, this is only the second year that the event took place at the health center’s newest location at 105 Vineyard Way, West Grove. The West Grove location currently houses LCH’s Women’s Health Center and Dental Center. LCH pediatrics will soon move to the location as the service expands into integrated health, mental health and social services for children in southern Chester County. A total of 293 coats were given away during the event thanks to Concordville Nissan and Concordville Subaru, which donated 300 coats through Auto Dealers See Holiday Cheer pg 8

male and female finishers; the first-, second-, and third-place winners in different age and gender categories; and the first three finishers of any age group who race with their dogs. There also will be a packet pickup prize as well as door and dog prizes for this milestone-year event. A registration fee has been set and may be paid on race day. Those who register by Friday, Jan. 17, will pay a discounted fee. Advance registrants may pick up their race packets on Jan. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods in The Shoppes at Belmont, Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. A total of 234 runners and hikers registered for the 2019 Polar Bear 5K, Kanaskie reported. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event, and 47 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. The

group uses the proceeds to support local efforts to end global warming, which is credited as the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The funds will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County organizations over the past four years. Race proceeds will also sustain the group’s free-to-the-public outdoor activities and educational programs. The Sierra Club is a national organization with each state having its own chapter. The Lancaster Group, one of 10 groups in the Pennsylvania Chapter, has about 1,500 members. For more information, online registration, and forms, readers may visit www.lancastersierraclub.org and click on the Polar Bear 5K tab, email sierraclub event@gmail.com, or visit www.face book.com/sierraclublancaster.

OperaLancaster To Offer Concert By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The title of OperaLancaster’s next event reflects the performers, not its intended audience. Life, love, and friendship will be celebrated at the “Ladies Night Out” event on Friday, Jan. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, 110 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Vocalists Amy Yovanovich, Carolyn McLain, Heidi Shannon, and Kristin Sims will be accompanied by Maria Thompson Corley. “The program was developed to promote the depth of talent in Lancaster County, which has always been the guiding philosophy of OperaLancaster and an important reason to support the organization today,” said Sims. “On a purely selfish note, I wanted to collaborate with these four wonderful musicians, who also happen to be generous, kind people within the community.” Sims described the program’s setting as a casual evening between friends, sharing music that speaks to real life, such as falling in love, heartbreak, and humorous secrets. Guests will be treated to well-known opera arias such as “O mio babbino caro” from Puccini’s “Gianni Schicci,” “Mon coeur s’ouvre a ta voix” from Saint-Saens’ “Samson and Delilah,” and “Laurie’s Song” from Copland’s “The Tender Land.” Songs from musical theater productions “Jekyll and Hyde,” “The Music Man,” and “Oklahoma!” will also be included. The vocalists will primarily perform solo, but there will be three duets, and a group number will conclude the concert. “One of the duets is between the singer and the pianist. It’s very funny and will highlight Maria’s many talents,” Sims remarked.

YOUR ATTENTION

Tickets may be purchased at www.operalancaster.com until 5 p.m. on Jan. 17. Ticket sales will resume at the church beginning at 5:30 p.m. OperaLancaster was founded in 1952 as The Lancaster Opera Workshop. Its mission has remained the same: to entertain, educate, and inspire the community through opera. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-553-2127.

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

Royer’s Collects Holiday Cards For Veterans

Audrey Shutter of Royer’s Flowers & Gifts displays some of the 1,000-plus holiday cards and coloring pages the company collected for area veterans in conjunction with the Holidays for Heroes program of the American Red Cross. Royer’s collected the cards and coloring pages from the public throughout November in each of its stores. This year, the Red Cross distributed holiday cards to more than 700 veterans in 30 locations in its greater Pennsylvania region. One of those locations is Frey Village, a continuing care retirement community in Middletown, where the Red Cross and Royer’s hosted a holiday party for 18 veterans on Dec. 16.
