Quarryville Borough’s snowplows cover over nine miles of roadway every winter season.

Keeping Roads Clear In Quarryville ow that winter is upon us, it is important for people to know how to stay safe on the roads. Local municipalities maintain most of the roads after and sometimes during snowfall. In an interview with the Advertiser, Scott Peiffer addressed the topic of snow removal. Now manager of the Quarryville Borough, Peiffer used to drive a snowplow, so he knows firsthand what it’s like to make sure the roads are cared for properly. Advertiser: How many miles of road does the borough have to cover during the winter season? P e i f f e r : We actually have more than nine miles of roadway. We have a lot of PennDOT roads that we are not responsible for.

N

A d v e r t i s e r : How do you determine the order and priority of plowing the roads? Peiffer: We typically have three drivers, and they each have a route, so we kind of do a frontal attack on the whole thing. So, the priorities for each person’s route is the busiest street. Advertiser: What happens if a car is blocking the snowplow? P e i f f e r : The snowplow will go around it, but we always tell people that the benefits are if you get your car out of the street that we can plow to the curb line and we basically plowed your parking spot open for you. Advertiser: Do you have any tips or rules for keeping sidewalks clear for residents of the borough? Peiffer: We have a sidewalk ordi-

nance that says residents must clear the snow and ice from their sidewalk within 24 hours after the snow stops falling, and it is illegal to throw that snow back out on the street as well as on or against a fire hydrant. Think of a mail carrier walking your sidewalk every day, think about deliveries from UPS or FedEx. Advertiser: Do you know about how much salt on average the borough goes through in a winter season? Peiffer: I n the winter, probably between probably eight to 10 tons. It’s tricky because you’re trying to guess what the weather is going to do. A plan evolves as it’s happening, so to speak. Advertiser: What would you say is the most valuable advice you

could give township residents when it comes to staying safe on the roads during a snowstorm? Peiffer: It’s just best not to drive unless you absolutely have to. Obviously, people have to go to work and things like that. I understand that, but for some, walking is much easier and safer. Advertiser: If people want more information, whom should they contact? P e i f f e r : I put up a post on our website where people can look up the ordinance if they want and see my summary of it. The Quarryville Municipal Building is located at 300 St. Catherine St., Quarryville. When House of His Creation (HOHC) executive director Matthew Neff and his wife, HOHC house manager Callie Neff, considered whether to breed their dog, Maggie, with a friend’s chocolate Labrador, they thought it would happen in early summer and that maybe they would have puppies in the ministry’s location at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz in the fall of 2021. Maggie had other ideas. Instead of early summer, Maggie was bred in late September. As a result, on Dec. 1, 2021, Maggie gave birth to seven live puppies four males and three females. Six of the puppies are black and one is chocolate. Two-year-old Maggie, who came from a Lititz farm, is a mixture of German shepherd, blue heeler, and possibly some Labrador. Maggie looks much like a black Lab, and Matt mentioned that she has the webbed paws and gentle temperament associated with a retriever.

The Neffs have always advocated for the benefit of animals to the ministry, which provides women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. Maternity housing is available for women age 18 and up especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy. “(Maggie) is our pet, and she is the house dog,” explained Callie, who noted that the family has raised ducks, chickens, and goats, as well. “(Animals) bring an extra level of joy.” Currently, the Neffs also keep a somewhat cantankerous pug named Po at the house. “The pug is comic relief, and Maggie provides love,” noted Matt. By mid-December, the Neffs could identify the individual puppies by name names based on appearance, behavior, and even birth order. “This little one is Runtie, and the one with the big face is Gigantor,” said Callie,

Considering Maggie’s mixed breeding, the Neffs have come up with their own name for the type of dogs in the whelping box next to their bed. “We call them snuggle puppies,” said Callie. “They are very loving.” Matt agreed. “Holding a puppy is like holding a baby,” he said. “(When you hold one), life isn’t so bad. who noted her daughter named one puppy Goose because he sticks by Gigantor so closely. The pairing inspired comparisons to famous sidekicks, including Maverick and Goose from “Top Gun.” Two of the puppies resemble their mother in that they have a white spot on their chests; the female is Little Maggie, and the male is Magnus. The single brown puppy is Brownie. The last puppy to be born is called Miracle Baby because Maggie began to give birth just after midnight. One of the puppies was stillborn, and Runtie made his appearance at 6 a.m. The Neffs suspected the birthing was complete, but at noon Miracle Baby arrived. According to the Neffs, Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, has been interacting with Maggie for two years and often remarked that if she could find a dog like her, she would get one. Gibbs will have first pick of the litter, followed by a number of others who have expressed serious

Ehlers both scored eight points each to lead the hosts. Lasko netted three points in the first quarter as Manheim held a slim 8-7 lead with Reed scoring five. Knier’s six points fueled Manheim’s 10-point second quarter and pushed the visitors to an 18-13 lead at the half. The second half proved to be the difference. Knier tallied 10 in both the third and fourth quarters, Reed chipped in with 13 after the break and Solanco could not match that. Ehlers scored six of her eight in the second half. The girls were looking to end 2021 on a positive note Thursday, December 30, against Red Lion but a strong 3-point shooting performance by the Lady Lions helped propel the visitors to a 58-31 victory. Clinging to a slim 8-5 first quarter lead, the Lions canned three treys in the second frame, helping to extend the lead to 23-11. The visitors held Solanco to six points in the third quarter and then held off a home team rally down the stretch. “The three has been a difference in each of our last three games,” head coach Chad McDowell pointed out. “Pequea Valley hit 9 and both CV and Red Lion finished with 11. “We knew this would be a physical style game and we needed to match that,” he continued. “Early on I thought we executed well, but then they started hitting threes and we had to alter our defensive approach.” Solanco battled through the second half but couldn’t cut into the deficit. They canned 12-of22 free throws, but the visitors, in addition to dropping in five more treys, were able to covert turnovers into points to help fuel their 35-point second half.

Against Manheim Central on Thursday, December 30, Solanco’s Noah Baber puts the defensive pressure on the Barons’ Collin Thompson.

“We have been working on minimizing our turnovers,” said McDowell, “but they were able to take advantage of our turnovers, especially in the middle quarters. “On the positive side, Olivia and Jenna have been consistent on the boards and lead our team in that category,” he continued. “And Sarah Landis photo by Mona Steinhauer has been a spark off the bench. in the first half while freshman Noah Bailey scored eight of his ten in the second half. That consistency coach Long was talking about was evident in Solanco’s second clash against the Barons. The visitors played tough in the first half and were down just two points, 26-24, at the half. The hosts, however, outscored the Mules in both the third (18-10) and fourth (19-9) quarters to pull away. Bailey earned top scoring honors in this one with 15 points, five coming in the first quarter. Cunningham, with nine, just missed double figures while both Yoder and Noah Baber scored seven each. Grube was once again a force, knocking down a gamehigh 28 points, and was one of three Barons to reach double figures. The Mules were coming off a 57-43 win over Cocalico on Dec. 21. Jaydon Yoder poured in a game-high 26 points. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Solanco opened the 2022 season with a home game against Manheim Central last Wednesday. The Barons, with five returning starters, used a strong second half to pull away with a 55-30 victory. The hosts knew Maddie Knier would be a force. She shook the Solanco defenders and popped in 28 points. Probably a bigger surprise was Abbie Reed who finished with 20. Olivia Lasko and Jenna

model, patients pay for hearing services in two ways: a slidingscale fee based on income or by paying it forward through volunteer hours to a community service organization. This year, Community Action Partners (CAP) was selected as the recipient of the service hours or donations of personal care items. To qualify for the Circle of Giving program, patients must not exceed an annual household income of up to 250% of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, that equates to $66,250 or less. A&E Hearing Connection is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to meet the needs of people who may otherwise fall between the cracks when it comes to qualifying for certain health care services. A&E Hearing Connection relies on donations, grants, volunteers, and other sources of support from the community to sustain its program. Anyone who would like to be considered for the 2022 program may contact A&E Hearing Connection at www.aehearing.org or call 717-553-2688.

documents illustrating the communication of core values, and strategic planning documents can also be provided to further illustrate the company’s commitment to ethics. The third step of the process is the administration of an employee survey with questions around the culture of ethics at the company. Available online and in print, this survey will be distributed to individuals at all levels of the company and will be anonymous. The fourth and final step of the process includes an inperson or virtual site visit with trained local business professionals who work in concert with Samaritan. The site visitors will request interviews with a number of different individuals at the organization and structure their questions around the five criteria included in the Ethics in Business award: integrity, fairness and justice, stewardship, life-enhancing, and transparency. The report generated by the site visitors, who will also review the employee survey and all provided documents, will be used by an anonymous selection committee to determine the year’s award recipient. Businesses, organizations and nonprofits based in Lancaster County have an opportunity to participate in a free, comprehensive ethics audit through Samaritan Counseling Center’s Ethics in Business program. The in-depth process consists of four steps that allow companies to examine their commitment and overall approach to ethics. The first step is to submit an online nomination before Saturday, Jan. 15, by an employee or a Lancaster County resident who admires the company. Upon nomination, the organization will be contacted to confirm its interest in the ethics audit. The second step of the process is the provision of documents to the Ethics in Business program coordinator at Samaritan. These documents should demonstrate how ethics and policies are communicated to employees, as well as the overall framework of the company. Documents requested from companies will include an organizational chart, an ethics statement, an employee policy manual, a mission and vision statement, a core values statement and, if applicable, a recent annual report.
