Farm Conservation Supports Veteran Rehabilitation BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
ormer Army Sgt. Sara Hodgkiss has dedicated her post-military life to restoration: that of unwanted horses, other military veterans and disabled individuals, and her family’s farm in Kirkwood, Woerth It Hollow. Hodgkiss took ownership of the farm in 2013. In 2017, Woerth It Hollow became an official nonprofit, through which Hodgkiss could combine her experience as a human resource specialist with the healing aspects of rescue farming. Since then, Hodgkiss has paired veterans with horses, helping humans and equines learn to trust each other and to work through their respective traumas. Between four and six horses live at the farm at a time, and up to 30 veterans and their families visit regularly to groom and exercise the animals. The veterans also occasionally help with conservation efforts on the farm. After Hodgkiss moved to the farm in January 2015 and decided to turn it into a horse rescue and work with disabled people, she wanted to do it right. Stewarding
Chamber Introduces New Website BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“The Chamber is uniquely positioned to serve smaller, rural businesses. We really needed a place to connect (Chamber members) and highlight their businesses,” internet expert Adam Grim said as he explained the rationale behind the website redesign for the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. “We wanted the website to be helpful for them.”

streambank stabilization project on the farm. Representatives of Got Your Six, Warriors on the Water, Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club, and Woerth It Hollow planted 488 live stakes and 51 trees and shrubs along Coopers Run. Funding for the project came from the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program and a grant from the Lancaster County Conservation District. The Keystone 10 Million Tree Partnership
and Ernst Conservation Seeds Inc. donated the plants. Hodgkiss estimated that at least $100,000 has been invested in conservation efforts at the farm thus far. More remains to be done, however. “ We were awarded a Team Home Depot grant for our barnpainting project … to put new paint on the barn and much-needed gutters. We were able to get the barn painted but were not able to
finish the gutters,” Hodgkiss said. “Due to COVID this year, we were unable to apply for the grant to help us continue to move forward with our facility repairs. We are in desperate need of donations, equipment, and facility repairs.” Readers who are interested in supporting Woerth It Hollow or participating in its programs may contact Hodgkiss at woerthithollow @gmail.com or 717-682-6976 or visit www.woerthithollow.net.
Police Departments Encourage Blood Donation BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“(Blood) is definitely a need at any time of the year, but with everything going on with COVID, it’s at a critically low level,” said Strasburg Borough Police Department (PD) Officer Robert Burns, explaining why he is excited his department is participating in the Bleed Blue Challenge. “Anytime you can inject an amount of fun … and drive up the amount of blood in storage … it’s better.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running

ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Encouraging blood donations is “a no-brainer,” Millersville Borough PD Lt. Jeffrey Margevich commented, adding, “It saves lives. That’s the whole key.” See Bleed Blue Challenge pg 5

the land is an important part of caring for people and horses, Hodgkiss noted. She recalls reaching out to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for directions so she could begin making improvements. “We began to lay out farm management plans and needs,” Hodgkiss said. After animals began arriving at the farm, Woerth It Hollow became eligible for conservation funding. Hodgkiss improved a creek crossing and then enrolled 2.5 acres in the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), through which 300 trees and shrubs were planted on that land. Next, a manure pit was built on the farm as part of the implementation of a manure management plan. The farm has also utilized a nutrient management plan from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for the past four years. During the COVID-19 shutdown, some work at Woerth It Hollow was permitted to continue and a number of outdoor projects were completed. In November, volunteers helped with the Coopers Run

I’m hoping to provide that consistency.” As FRPC’s senior pastor, Brown is responsible for preaching and overseeing Christian education and small group Bible studies. He works directly with the youth and music directors, provides pastoral counseling, and offers discipleship training. “I want us to be a place where worship on Sundays is important, but where Bible study and Sunday school are important as well,” Brown said. “I want us to grow in fellowship and to reach our community. We are ‘a people saved by grace, trusting in God day by day while growing in awe of God in a community where we love one another and are overflowing with thankfulness,’” he added, quoting FRPC’s motto. Some pastors know they want to enter the ministry from their youth. Others take a bit of a winding path to get there. The Rev. Michael Brown falls into the latter category. Brown was installed as the new senior pastor at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church (FRPC), 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, on Nov. 15, 2020. The Mississippi native’s resume includes a law degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Law, and active duty in the army. As a JAG Corps member, Brown served in Iraq and received a Bronze Star. While stationed in Georgia, he gained extensive courtroom experience before entering the Mississippi Army National Guard. Brown achieved the rank of major and received a Distinguished Service Medal for deployment to West Africa. He also made partner in a Mississippi law firm. Along the way, Brown was involved with several
Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) congregations. He became a Christian during his senior year at Mississippi College and was discipled in the faith during law school. He led several small group Bible studies, taught adult Sunday school, and served as a ruling elder. About 10 years ago, Brown sensed an urge to leave law and devote himself to vocational service. “I felt the Lord was calling me into full-time ministry,” Brown said. “I started praying about the when and the where.” The First Presbyterian Church of Pooler, Ga., hired Brown to serve as associate pastor, and he simultaneously completed a master’s degree in divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta. Brown then felt called to be a senior pastor and was put in touch with FRPC. Upon his hiring, Brown and his wife Ashley, along with their four young children, moved to Lancaster County. They live in the Refton area. “ We were looking for a

The site is intended to showcase businesses, make contact information easy to find, bring Chamber members and clients together, and offer straightforward ways to promote events and other opportunities online, which is especially important at the moment. Kristen Phipps, who has a background in branding and design, created a new Chamber logo and fonts that Grim used on the website. The rooster and dusky green and yellow represent the agricultural roots of southern Lancaster County. “It was a fun project,” Grim commented. “Feedback has been very positive.” Currently, website content features a calendar, a membership directory, membership information, and a history and leadership page. The directory includes more than 215 listings, which are searchable by name or type of business, and a different business is featured every time the page refreshes.

For businesses that may not have their own websites, the Chamber website is designed to fill the gap. “They can use it as a landing page of sorts,” Grim explained. “There’s heavy SEO (search engine optimization) force behind the site so these businesses have more of a presence on Google. Anything we can do to make it a better tool for the members is what we’re looking for.” Grim noted that the website will continue to be developed over the months and years to come. “ We have a great team that’s committed to the website,” he said. “We plan to roll out new features. We don’t want to stop here.” Readers may visit https://southernlancaster chamber.org to view the new website and to sign up to join the Chamber. Membership is open to everyone regardless of location, although most members are situated south of Route 30 in Lancaster County.

In 1975, the Bill Gaither Trio with the Sunday School Picnic introduced a song that shares with youngsters the idea that they have possibility and potential because God loves them. Nearly five decades later, a new generation of youths will learn to sing and, director Katie Wieand hopes, take to heart the meaning of “I Am a Promise.” “There’s a reason we remember that song,” Wieand said. “It’s good truths and a good tune.” Wieand is the director of children’s music and online ministry at Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street and also the leader of Outpour Kids, GCC’s youth performing arts ministry. Wieand attended Belmont University along with Denver Bierman of the power funk band Denver & the Mile High Orchestra, and she has chosen to use his arrangement of “I Am a Promise” in the spring session of the Outpour Kids choral program. “I Am a Promise” will be one of four songs that underscore the session’s theme of “You Are Created With a Promise & Purpose.” “We will be looking at (the idea that) you were made with a mission and unpacking God’s promises to us,” Wieand explained. Penn State Master Gardeners has announced that of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Lancaster County ranks first for certified pollinator-friendly gardens, with 100 certifications in the county out of 944 statewide. The Master Gardeners noted that Lancaster County also takes second place for the number of new certifications awarded in 2020. Penn State Master Gardeners created this certification program to encourage the gardening public to help protect pollinators, many of whose populations are declining. According to Penn State entomologists, pollinators are responsible
for one-third of the world’s food supply. However, habitat loss, disease, and contact with pesticides continue to threaten pollinator populations. The pollinator-friendly garden certification program encourages people to provide food and habitat for pollinators, which include native insects and other animals. In turn, pollinatorfriendly certified gardens help protect plant diversity and food sources. Penn State Master Gardeners provide education and information on how private and public gardens can be certified. That information, along with certification requirements and the

County Certified Wildlife-Friendly thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water
Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@ lancasterconservancy.org. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive - food, water, cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation.
