Eagle Scout Project Will Aid Rail Trail Riders BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
yclists who experience mechanical trouble while pedaling the Enola Low Grade Trail in Providence Township now have access to a repair station, thanks to Ryan Vanover of Quarryville. The Boy Scout Troop 76 member opted to install a Dero Fixit unit as his Eagle Scout project. Riding the trails is a favorite pastime for Ryan and his parents, Raymond and Robin. About seven years ago, while enjoying a ride in Cape Henlopen State Park, the Vanovers encountered a trail-side repair station. Ryan tucked the memory away for later. “I knew this would be a project a while ago,” he explained. In September 2020, at the start of his senior year at Solanco High School, Ryan officially began his project. The budget included $1,300 for the purchase of the Fixit unit and $100 for the concrete base, so Ryan solicited donations to cover the costs. He also talked with Providence Township officials to identify a site for the unit. He had hoped to put it near one of the Fairview Road trailheads because the Vanovers had lived nearby, but the Lancaster
Police Departments Encourage Blood Donation BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“(Blood) is definitely a need at any time of the year, but with everything going on with COVID, it’s at a critically low level,” said Strasburg Borough Police Department (PD) Officer Robert Burns, explaining why he is excited his department is participating in the Bleed Blue Challenge. “Anytime you can inject an amount of fun … and drive up the amount of blood in storage … it’s better.”

Chamber Introduces New Website BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“The Chamber is uniquely positioned to serve smaller, rural businesses. We really needed a place to connect (Chamber members) and highlight their businesses,” internet expert Adam Grim said as he explained the rationale behind the website redesign for the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. “We wanted the website to be helpful for them.” To plan the new site, Grim talked with board members and members at large. Several elements are key in the new design. The site is intended to showcase businesses, make contact

information easy to find, bring Chamber members and clients together, and offer straightforward ways to promote events and other opportunities online, which is especially important at the moment. Kristen Phipps, who has a background in branding and design, created a new Chamber logo and fonts that Grim used on the website. The rooster and dusky green and yellow represent the agricultural roots of southern Lancaster County. “It was a fun project,” Grim commented. “Feedback has been very positive.” Currently, website content features a calendar, a membership
directory, membership information, and a history and leadership page. The directory includes more than 215 listings, which are searchable by name or type of business, and a different business is featured every time the page refreshes. “It’s a tool for the community. Anybody can use (the directory) to look for other Lancaster County businesses to work with,” Grim said. For businesses that may not have their own websites, the Chamber website is designed to fill the gap. “They can use it as a landing page of sorts,” Grim explained. “There’s heavy SEO (search engine optimization) force behind the site so these

Bicycle Club had already installed one there. Instead, Ryan was asked to place his Fixit unit at the Sigman Road trailhead. The work was completed in two parts. The concrete pad was poured in November 2020 and allowed to cure for at least 56 days. The unit was installed on Jan. 9. The station includes screwdrivers, wrenches, and other tools. “Pretty much anything you need to fix anything, unless you have a flat with a big hole,” Ryan said. Ryan cited the Scout Law as part of the motivation behind his project, noting that the Law states that a Scout is helpful. “(The Fixit) is a tremendous help if your chain’s popped off and you don’t have somebody to help you,” he said. “If you don’t have your tools, (the Fixit) is the coolest thing.” Ryan credited his mother and Eagle Scouts Bobby Kiesel, Troop 76, and Daniel Althoff, Troop 91, with assisting on the project.

The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors.

LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Encouraging blood donations is “a no-brainer,” Millersville Borough PD Lt. Jeffrey Margevich commented, adding, “It saves lives. That’s the whole key.” “Donating blood is an interesting way to help the community,” Pequea Township PD Chief John Michener remarked. “You never know who you might be saving. It could be your own (life) or your family member’s.” To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancastergeneralhealth.org /lgh/our-services/blood-bank/ about-us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717-544-0170, option 2.

In 1975, the Bill Gaither Trio with the Sunday School Picnic introduced a song that shares with youngsters the idea that they have possibility and potential because God loves them. Nearly five decades later, a new generation of youths will learn to sing and, director Katie Wieand hopes, take to heart the meaning of “I Am a Promise.” “There’s a reason we remember that song,” Wieand said. “It’s good truths and a good tune.” Wieand is the director of children’s music and online ministry at Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street and also the leader of Outpour Kids, GCC’s youth performing arts ministry. Wieand attended Belmont University along with Denver Bierman of the power funk band Denver & the Mile High Orchestra, and she has chosen to use his arrangement of “I Am a Promise” in the spring session of the Outpour Kids choral program. “I Am a Promise” will be one of four songs that underscore the session’s theme of “You Are Created With a Promise & Purpose.” “We will be looking at (the idea that) you were made with a mission and unpacking God’s promises to us,” Wieand explained. Students in grades one through six are invited to participate in the Outpour Kids choir, which will rehearse on Thursdays, Feb. 4 to March
18, from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. and offer a final performance for family members on Friday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. The rehearsals and performance will be held at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. Due to socially distanced space on stage being limited, participation in the program is capped at 40 students, as it was in the fall. “They still were able to learn good vocal techniques,” Wieand remarked. “They definitely had to listen harder (because they were spread out) and really pay attention. They had to develop good aural skills in order to have that blended tone with other singers.” Students also received devotional materials at each rehearsal, and those who

two points but snagged six offensive rebounds. And in the JV game, which the Mules won 45-42, sophomore guard Jayden Yoder poured in 37 points. The Mules were coming off a 59-38 Friday night loss at Red Lion. Down 10-8 at the end of eight minutes, the hosts, with eight treys on the night, extended a lead they never relinquished, outscoring Solanco 20-7 in the second quarter and 17-10 in the third. The visitors buckled down over the final eight minutes, winning the frame 13-12, but it wasn’t enough. Red Lion placed a trio of players in double figures while Clary’s 12 points were tops for Solanco. Baker followed with nine, and Burger and Sheaffer combined for 14. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team opened their pandemic delayed season with back-to-back losses. The defending Section Three champs dropped a 4034 result to Warwick in Lititz on Friday and 24 hours later came out on the short end of a 52-39 result against visiting Penn Manor. After a slow first quarter, Solanco used a 10-4 run in the second quarter to push out to a 15-10 halftime advantage over Warwick. Four different players scored in a third quarter that saw the visitors open with a 9-0 run. The hosts, however, answered the challenge and won the frame 1211 to cut the lead to four. Down 26-22 with eight minutes remaining, Warwick buckled down on defense and exploded on the offensive end, outscoring the visitors 18-8 to pull out the six-point win. “We struggled to break their press,” stated McDowell. “They put pressure on our guards, and we panicked.” Jade Eshleman (6 rebounds) netted eight of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter and Arianna Seiberlich added nine points. Sammi Jackson hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and added four points. Solanco was back at it on Saturday, hosting Penn Manor. Paige Phillips and Olivia Lasko gave the home team an early advantage, but the visitors ended the frame with a 13-0 run and never looked back, earning a 52-39 non-league win. Solanco, with 22 first half
turnovers, lost the second quarter as well, 12-8, and found themselves on the short end of a 25-12 halftime result. “Turnovers were our Achille’s heels,” said McDowell. “We need to find our way on offense and that will help eliminate the turnovers.” Things got interesting in the third quarter when Solanco regained its mojo and looked to make a run. A three-ball by Phillips cut the lead to 25-17 but it wasn’t enough. PM countered with a pair of triples and the Comets earned a 15-11 quarter lead. Manor took its largest lead of the night, 43-23, when Kamia Goodley netted a triple on Manor’s first possession of the fourth quarter, but it was Solanco that won the frame, 16-12. Jade Eshleman, who grabbed a teamhigh 16 rebounds, made it a doubledouble when she bucketed seven of her 12 points down the stretch and Phillips, who led the team with 14 points, went 4-for-4 at the free throw line to spark the advantage. “Our defense fueled a bit of a comeback,” noted McDowell. “When we are active on the defensive end and can create a turnover and then can get out in transition, we are a better team.” WRESTLING Solanco’s grapplers got the 2021 season underway with a tri-meet at Hempfield on January 9. The Mules opened with a 56-12 loss to the Black Knights and then dropped a 43-30 result against Muncy. “Hempfield took it to us,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “That team has come up through the program since elementary school. They were definitely more physical. We’ve had limited time in the room, and this showed what areas we need to work on and can improve.” Jared Fulton’s 5-1 decision at 126 and Jackson Houghton’s 5-2 nod at 132 gave the Mules their only lead of the night, 6-3. Hempfield responded with six falls and a tech
fall to put the match out of reach. John Sankus (285) and Dominic Dominic Flatt earned Solanco’s final Flatt (106) both recorded first periwin of the match, a 2:58 fall over od falls, pushing the lead to 24-9. Jordan Williams. Contactless Snow Removal Launches in Lancaster Dozens of Lancaster snow removal businesses have partnered with Lawn Love to offer a contactless, on-demand snow removal service that can be scheduled quickly and conveniently. Lancaster homeowners can now order snow removal instantly through the Lawn Love platform, using their smartphone or computer. Quotes are generated in less than two minutes using satellite imaging technology. Once the customer accepts the price, a local snow removal provider is assigned to the property. Lawn Love aims to provide a service that will have a positive impact on the lives of Lancaster homeowners and snow removal operators. By using digital technology to make the quoting and payment process contactless, customers and operators can remain socially distanced. Lawn Love’s snow removal providers are all local operators with more than one season of experience. The platform aims to offer Lancaster providers a steady stream of new customers and business management tools. In addition to one-time services, users can schedule snow removal for the entire winter, without needing to sign a contract. The company’s weather mapping software is designed to ensure that providers never miss a snow day. Lawn Love broke into the ondemand services scene in 2014. The company offers a wide range of yard services, including lawn mowing, aeration, weeding, gutter clearing, leaf removal and snow removal. For more details, readers may call 717-696-6677 or visit www.lawnlove.com/pennsylvania /lancaster-lawn-care.
