Six Solanco High School students were recognized at the Pennsylvania Farm Show that was held in Harrisburg earlier this month. The Solanco FFA members attended the Pennsylvania FFA Association’s Mid-Winter Convention, which was held in conjunction with the Farm Show. During the convention, Tate Fisher, Amber Pownall, and Todd Welk were presented with Keystone Degrees, the state-level FFA degree. The only higher degree

available in FFA is the American, which is the national degree. The Keystone Degree is awarded based on the student’s accomplishments: leadership activities including office and committee assignments within FFA, school and community activities outside of FFA, and FFA cooperative activities including chapter, county, regional, state, and national activities. The student’s record of employment is also considered, with a set number of hours or dollars required to be invested in a supervised agricultural experience (SAE). Tate served as chapter treasurer last year. He raises goats as his SAE. His favorite FFA activity was competing in the wildlife and forestry career development event at the state level. Tate’s future plans include working in construction and masonry. Amber is the chapter’s student adviser. Her SAE is raising dairy cows and gaining work experience. Amber’s favorite activity was showing cattle at the state convention,
and her future plans include attending nursing school and working as an X-ray technician. Todd was the chapter’s vice president last year. His SAE is raising dairy cattle, and his favorite activity has been dairy cattle judging at the Eastern States Exposition (Big E) in West Springfield, Mass. Todd plans to work as an auto/diesel mechanic. See Solanco FFA pg 5

“We have a responsibility to make disciples in every space (including online),” said Addison Roberts, youth and online pastor for Grace Community Church of Willow Street (GCCWS), referencing the Great Commission. “I’m excited about people finding Jesus who might otherwise never step into a church.” Roberts has coupled a passion to reach people with the Gospel with an interest in internet technology and
mixing music. About seven years ago Roberts got into Twitch and livestreaming Madden. Although he discontinued actively broadcasting his video games, the experience had given him an understanding of how livestreams worked. Five years ago, Roberts joined the staff at GCCWS. In 2018, lead pastor Mike Sigman asked Roberts to spearhead the See Online Church Campus pg 3

Online Church Campus from pg 1 “Feedback has been very positive, Roberts shared. “People are really excited that when they can’t make it to (the physical campus, they can) tune in that way. In March or April, Roberts hopes to offer GCCWS membership class via a video conference. Eventually, Bible studies, small groups, children’s programs, and other activities may be added. The online church campus will evolve and be “fairly dynamic, he said. “Online communities already exist in many different capacities, Roberts said, reading from the FAQ at https://gccws.net/ online-church. He noted that GCCWS has a closed Facebook group, where church members connect on a variety of topics. “People should be able to connect to our church digitally, he added. An online church campus is ideal for individuals who are unable to leave their homes for whatever reason or who might have anxiety around large groups of people. The service also enables people who travel for business or divide their time between vacation homes to still be part of the GCCWS community. Roberts related his interest in FCCC’s “micro-site model, which
encourages people to invite friends or neighbors over to participate in an online worship service. FCCC provides training to site hosts, particularly for serving Communion and other activities of church life. “That’s something I’m incredibly interested in, Roberts commented. GCCWS recently began a sermon series titled “Stories of His Power, which highlights God’s power in the lives of church members. The series will continue through Easter. The church holds worship
services at 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sundays. Child care is provided. GCCWS services do not include an offering time, but donations may be placed in boxes in the sanctuary or made online. The Evangelical Congregational Church denomination is providing some financial support for the online church campus. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned FAQ page or contact Roberts at addison@gccws.net or 717464-5333.

production of livestreamed worship services and enhance the church’s online outreach. The result has been the creation of an online campus, which is really the beginning of what Roberts hopes will develop into an enriching, immersive experience that individuals and families can access from wherever they might be. “We’re making a commitment that this can be people’s church experience, Roberts said. “(We’re asking ourselves), ‘Are we offering everything online that we do in person?’ The online church has been patterned off the examples provided by Life.Church in Oklahoma and First Capital Christian Church (FCCC) in Indiana. The platform has been beta tested by church members, and it is slated to go live at www.gccws.net/live on Sunday, Jan. 26, for the 9:15 a.m. worship service. Viewers may log on at 9:05 a.m. to catch the preservice information and music. During the service, Roberts will be online in a chat room, where participants may exchange messages with him and others. Possible topics will be prayer requests, questions about the morning’s message, or items of concern or praise in individuals’ lives.

He expressed an appreciation for the church’s purpose of connecting people to Jesus. “We believe that people need Jesus because it’s only through Him that we are adopted into God’s family,” he said. The slogan for ministry at Refton BIC is “bold in prayer, quick to care, and eager to share the message of Jesus,” MacFeat related. The student ministry has made prayer a conscious part of its activities. “Sometimes, student ministry can be seen from the outside as just fun and games,” MacFeat said. “However, Joey and Mark do a great job of programming our priorities as a

He noted that the series will examine the core Bible messages that answer questions of who God is, who human beings are, and what their purpose is. The series will also define the problems in humanity and look at solutions. “All of this points to Jesus, because it’s His story,” MacFeat said. “I believe that if we don’t understand the beginning of the story in the way that it was meant to be understood, then the message of Jesus can come off as watered-down and/or

Ray D’Agostino
The Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) has announced a change in leadership. Ray D’Agostino has stepped down as CEO after being elected as a Lancaster County commissioner on Nov. 5. Shelby Nauman has been appointed by the board of directors as interim CEO. Nauman has served as the regional nonprofit’s COO since November 2018 and has been responsible for business operations and team building. Prior to joining LHOP as COO, she served as vice president at the Lancaster City Alliance. Nauman was with the Alliance for 14 years.
D’Agostino had been LHOP’s chief executive for 10 years. During his tenure, the organization has grown, going regional, increasing programs and services and tripling staffing and assets. D’Agostino was slated to take office on Jan. 6 and join Commissioners Josh Parsons and Craig Lehman, who were re-elected. LHOP adopted a new strategic plan at the end of October. The new plan builds on the success and growth LHOP has experienced over the past decade, according to LHOP board president Rick Jackson.

Solanco Earns Come-From-Behind Win Over LS opened the fourth quarter scoring and a turnover turned into a layup by Playing four games in seven days Phillips and just like that, Solanco proved to be a full slate for the girls’ grabbed its first lead of the night basketball team and they handled it 25-24. They never gave it up. A trey by with three wins against a single loss. Phillips (8 points, 6 rebounds) with The busy schedule started on Fri4:42 left made it 30-26 and four day night, January 10, with a road win straight free throws, two by Eshleman over Cocalico. After a tightly contested and two by Dombach pushed it to first three quarters, Solanco pulled out 34-28. L-S cut the lead to three twice the 38-31 win with a 14-5 fourth but the Mares went 4-for-8 from the foul line over the final 1:15 to remain on top of the section standings. “It was good for some younger girls to see court time in a big gym atmosphere,” McDowell said. “Sammi Jackson (4 points) did a lot of dirty work inside and rebounded well. She was a spark off the bench. And Nikki did a great job defensively and scored some key drives throughout the game.” Trout and Dombach finished with 10 points each while Eshleman hit double figures in rebounds with 14 and added five points. The JV team dropped a 36-23 final. Arianna Seiberlich and Olivia Lasko combined for 13 points. With no little time to celebrate, the Mares hosted Manheim Central and found themselves in a game that mirrored L-S. “It was a grind it out game,” said McDowell. “We traded blows backand-forth and neither team took control until the fourth quarter.” This time, however, it was the Barons that prevailed, 46-41. quarter advantage. Eight players reached the scoring column but it was Phillips that netted game-high honors with ten, including five in that pivotal fourth frame. “Nikki got two easy layups, including giving us the lead, 27-26 and then Paige hit a big three to give us a four point lead and we never looked back,” head coach Chad McDowell recalled. “And we were focused at the line,
hitting five-of-six to seal the game. Ilyand Rapant and Eshleman finished with six points each and combined for seven rebounds. Lasko was strong on the boards with five and dropped in five points. Trout was tops with four assists, Angela Cylc added three points, two rebounds and one assist, Sammi Jackson finished with three points and two boards and Alana Yoder added one point. January 13, Solanco made the trip north to Lampeter to take on their archrivals, the Pioneers. In a comefrom-behind result, Solanco finished on top 38-31. “It’s always good to go into a rivals’ gym and get a solid win,” said McDowell. “We knew if we could keep it close we would have a chance. Jade was in foul trouble early but Angela (3 points) stepped up and played big inside.” After trailing through three quarters, a three by Jenna Dombach
added three and Seiberlich scored one but was tops with three steals. The JV team, behind Lasko (9 points) and Wood (8) earned a 34-28 win. Thursday night 15 different players stepped on the court and 12 scored as Solanco powered its way past Octorara 66-33. They led 55-17 at the half. Phillips (14), Rapant (11), and Eshleman (9) were the top scorers. WRESTLING Solanco’s matmen pinned in five of their eight wins last Wednesday night and the result was a 42-27 Section One win over visiting Manheim Township. They improved their section mark to 3-3. Though Township won the first bout of the night, Jared Fulton’s 1:30 fall over Micah Sams at 120 gave the Mules a lead they never relinquished. “That was a key win,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “Sams was in the L-L finals last year and Jared came out and took it to him.” Both teams traded forfeits at 126 and 132 and Ronnie Fulton followed with a 57 second fall over Emanuel Diaz, pushing the lead to 18-9. Less than a minute later it was 24-9 as Steven Williams made short work of Michael Caceres at 145. The Streaks quieted the home crowd with three straight wins, including back-to-back falls at 160 and 170, tying the match at 24-24 before Robert Castagna shifted the momentum with a hard-fought, 11-8 decision over Michael Ohara (182). “Robert makes improvements each match,” said Mendez. “It was nice to see him get the win.” Nick Yannutz earned the fastest fall of the night, taking Austin Decaro directly to his back for an 18 second fall and a 33-24 lead. Township got three of those points back with a well-earned 11-5 decision over Jacob Frampton but Nate Neuhauser’s (285) 22 second fall over Sam Crist and Dom Flatt’s exciting 11-8 decision over Josh Hillard sent the Streaks packing.

Solanco’s Nick Yannutz makes short work of Manheim Township’s Austin Decaro, turning him for an 18-second fall at 195 pounds to help the Mules to a 42-27, Section One win last Wednesday in Quarryville.
Barons were 12-of-20. But from two-point land, the Barons dominated, 16 field goals to six. Backing Sheaffer and Smith was Baker and Burger, a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe, with seven points each. Clary added five points and Henry two in the loss. Trying to shake off their slow start curse, the Mules found themselves in an 18-18 first quarter tie with visiting Octorara on Thursday night but fell behind in the second frame with a 13-8 deficit. Down 31-26 at the half, Baker gave the hosts new life, netting ten of their 18 third quarter points and putting the Mules in front, 44-41. That momentum, however, faded over the final eight minutes. The Mules were 0-for-6 from threepoint range, were outscored 20-8 and suffered a 61-52 loss. Baker led a trio of double digit scorers with 16 points. Shaeffer hit 13 and Smith added a quiet 11, including a pair of threes in the third quarter. The Mules were also just 2-of-3 from the foul line while the Braves canned 11-of-15 attempts.

including all five of Solanco’s first quarter points. Zed Baker put up eight points, Tyler Burger added seven, Ethan Clary, who was 4-for-4 from the foul line, netted six and Ryan Smith chipped in with five to round out the scoring. Despite the loss, the Mules were an impressive 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. They did, however, give up ten three pointers. One day later, Solanco was back at it, traveling to Manheim Central for another section battle. Another slow start proved to hinder the Mules in a 62-46 loss to the Barons. The hosts jumped out to a 19-7 first quarter lead but only took the next three frames by a cumulative score of 43-39. “We still need to learn how to start faster,” said Long. “Marty Grawe had a nice game and came off the bench with seven points.” Both teams were busy knocking down threes with Solanco netting seven, three each from Sheaffer and Smith (9 points each) and Manheim hitting six. Both teams also racked up their trips to the free throw line where the Mules converted an impressive 13-for-16 while the

“Dom wrestled well against a kid that was 24-1,” noted Mendez. It was a busy and productive Saturday, January 12 for Solanco’s wrestling team as they went 5-0 to win the Dutchmen Duals at Annville Cleona. The Mules dominated the competition beating Northeastern 55-22, Milton Hershey 62-15, East Pennsboro 52-25, and Kennard-Dale 60-16 before pulling out a 43-30 win over Middletown in the finals. “I thought the boys wrestled well and did a great job showing improvement,” said Mendez. Clinging to a 33-30 lead with three bouts left, the Mules swept to pull out the win. Connor Charles, who went 4-1 on the day, earned a 3-1 sudden victory result at 170, Castagna worked a 12-6 decision at 182 and Yannutz, with a 14-2 major decision, wrapped up the day. He and Castagna, along with Ronald Fulton, Weston Bare, Flatt and Neuhauser all went 5-0 on the day. Jackson Houghton was 4-1. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Mules went up against Cocalico, the second place team in Section Three, Friday, January 10, but didn’t have the consistency needed to pull off the upset. The Eagles sprinted out to a 19-9 first quarter and used a 20-12 fourth quarter to pull away. Solanco battled in the second quarter, falling behind just 8-5 over eight minutes and matched the Eagles point-for-point in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough. Ryan Smith and Jalen Henry both finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively while Trey Rios, with six threes, paced the visitors with 22. In non-league action Saturday, another slow start proved costly as Solanco dropped a 57-41 result against visiting Palmyra. Smith scored all five of Solanco’s first quarter points while Palmrya netted 14 for the early lead. A balanced effort in the second quarter saw five players contribute to a 17 point outburst. Colesen Shaeffer nailed a pair of threes to lead the way and Tyler Burger added four points as Solanco cut the lead to 29-22 at the break. The Mules played tough down the stretch but Palmyra still came out on top, winning the third quarter 10-7 and the fourth 18-12. Sheaffer, the top scorer in this one, knocked down three treys and went 3-for-3 from the foul line for 12 points. Zed Baker (9), Smith (8), Henry (6) and Burger (6) rounded out the scoring. Back in Section Three play Monday, January 13, a sluggish start against the top team in the section, Lampeter-Strasburg, once again proved to be too much to overcome as they were dealt a 75-49 home loss. It was only the second time this year the Mules had given up over 70 points. The visitors, behind a trio of three’s from Darin Landis, jumped out to a 27-5 first quarter lead and never looked back. The next three quarters were much closer. Solanco outscored L-S 20-17 in the second frame, cutting the lead to 44-25 at the break but couldn’t close the gap. The Pioneers took the second half 31-24 to remain undefeated at 6-0 while the Mules dropped to 1-6. “Another slow start for us,” said head coach David Long. “We did not handle their pressure in an effective way.” Jalen Henry was tops for the Mules with 12 points and Shaeffer netted 11,

The LLMEA County Band (South) Festival will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Manheim Township High School. LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will offer two special programs in late January. Both programs are free and open to the public, but reservations are encouraged to ensure adequate space and/or supplies. “Science, Stage, & Spectacle in Antebellum Philadelphia,” a Regional History Colloquium program, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 23. A casual reception will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the main presentation at 4:30 p.m. in Ryder Hall. Between the American Revolution and the Civil War, Philadelphia, like the rest of the United States, was forging a distinct cultural profile. Philadelphians increasingly scrutinized the human body and its form, meaning, and expressivity. Dance historian Lynn Brooks will discuss the intricate braiding of political, scientific, and danced representations of the body, with focus on blackface minstrelsy and ballet in antebellum Philadelphia. On Saturday, Jan. 25, ‘60s Story Time will begin at 11 a.m. A history story will be read aloud, followed by a craft inspired by the story. Children ages 3 to 9 and their families are invited to participate. For reservations and details for either program, readers may visit www.lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633.

KDC Plans Relocation KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg. Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property. In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA executive director Hannah Smith-Brubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. Smith-Brubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16. KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.
Art Exhibit Reception Set A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of artwork Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies. For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com /CommunityRoomonKing and choose Events.
