SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LX • NO 40

Answering a call to action BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

T

ime and time again, residents of the Southern End have proven their ability to withstand adversity by coming together as one community. When the coronavirus pandemic shook the foundations of everyday life in 2020, nearly every church and business from Conestoga to Lampeter to Kirkwood held food drives and fundraisers to ensure their neighbors’ needs were met. Although the worst of the pandemic is behind us, its aftermath and a number of economic factors continue to add to a demand for basic necessities across Lancaster County that is greater than normal. To match the Southern End’s r ising needs, organizations such as Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) are rising to the occasion by looking after their neighbors. The nonprofit serves a wide zone that encompasses Solanco and Lampeter-Strasburg

school districts, as well as parts of Penn Manor School District. One of SNM’s goals is to combat food insecurity in its service area, which it primarily accomplishes by operating a food bank in Quarryville. The food bank runs on a choice pantry model that allows patrons to select the items they need the most; its inventory is stocked with healthy foods, and each item is color-coded by nutritional value. In 2023, SNM received more than 500 food orders, nearly 50% more than the previous year’s total of 354 orders. Additionally, the number of emergency orders received by the food bank increased by 133%. Teresa Dolan, executive director of SNM, said she attributes the higher numbers to a variety of factors, including the rising costs of rent, utilities and groceries. Although these factors persistently make many households’ budgets tighter, most of the families served by the food bank only need to use it Solanco Neighborhood Ministries volunteers (from left) Debbie Grace, Carol Oswald, Anne Fisher and Vickie See Food bank pg 5 Shertzer help the organization’s food bank run smoothly.

Celebrate Groundhog Day with Acorn Acres BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Elliott the groundhog, Acorn Acres’ mascot, will make his first official prognostication during this year’s Groundhog Day celebration.

Millersville-based wildlife rehabilitation center Acorn Acres will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 2, in downtown Lancaster. The festivities will kick off at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The celebration will continue with an all-ages Groundhog Day party from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Imperial, 26 E. Chestnut St. Both events will be free to attend. At 11:30 a.m., Acorn Acres ambassador Elliott the groundhog will predict the weather forecast for the remaining winter months. This will be Elliott’s first prognostication, as the yearly ritual was previously completed by the wildlife center’s former mascot, Poppy. After Poppy’s death last February, Elliott has taken over the late groundhog’s responsibilities as See Groundhog Day pg 2

Become a friend to bees BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“Honey bees pollinate a third of everything we eat,” said Master B e e ke e p er Denny Gor m an. “Without them, we wouldn’t have most of the fruit we eat. Honey bees also pollinate 100% of the almonds grown in this country.” Gorman, who is vice president of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society, is passionate about the insects. He invites other people who are interested in learning more to attend the 2024 New Beekeeper Workshop. It will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Gathering

Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The event will cover everything people need to start the hobby of beekeeping. “ We provide a continental breakfast and a very nice lunch,” Gorman said. “I personally teach a class in honey bee biology and hive biology. We teach classes in how to extract honey, where to place your hives, a little bit on diseases. We try to prepare a new beekeeper with the basic info they need to start beekeeping.” Gorman has been a beekeeper for seven years. He started the hobby after he retired from a career in business. “I wanted See Beekeeping pg 2

Once the party moves to the Imperial, guests may enjoy various family-friendly activities including groundhog-themed crafts, cornhole, Jenga and live entertainment. A game of bingo will begin at 5 p.m., but there will be a twist: Players must yell “groundhog” to redeem a winning card. At 6 p.m., an educational program fe at u r i n g E l l i o t t w i l l be held to offer guests information on groundhogs, followed by Elliott’s second prognostication at 7 p.m. for this year’s National Football League championship. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available until the winning numbers are selected at 8 p.m., and food and drinks will be available to purchase from a cash bar before the party wraps up. Traditionally, Acorn Acres celebrates Groundhog Day with a scavenger hunt in Lancaster city. The event was created in 2021 by the organization’s founder, Betsy Shank, who soug ht a way to support local businesses in the aftermath of the C OV I D - 1 9 p a n d e m i c . “I happened to have an Emmy -nominated and very cute groundhog, so I used Poppy’s popularity to draw people to downtown

businesses,” Shank said. Poppy acquired national fame after she appeared alongside Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League championship game in 2020. Shank decided to change the for mat of the event after Elliott took over as Acorn Acres’ mascot. Although Poppy was always comfortable in the limelight, Elliott is a younger and much more reserved groundhog. With this in mind, Shank redesigned the event to still support local businesses without overwhelming Elliott. Several businesses located in Quarryville, C o n e s to g a a n d o t h e r parts of the Southern End have donated prizes and other items for the celebration, including Britain Hill Winery, Conestoga Cookies and Hempfield Botanicals. Acorn Acres’ facility is located in Millersville, but its service area covers most of the county. In the past, the organization has taken in animals that were found as far south as Wakefield, and Shank has assisted wildlife centers in other counties by taking in one of their rescues. “ We want people to just come out, be happy and enjoy Groundhog Day,” Shank said. “This all started to get people smiling, even from behind a mask. We’re still doing that.” For more information, v i s i t w w w. aco r n ac re s wr.com/groundhog-day.

something to keep my mind sharp and something that I knew nothing about,” he said. He attended his first beekeeper workshop and now is vice president of the organization that got him hooked on the hobby. “ B e e s a re a m a z i n g l y intelligent,” he shared. “They can understand the concept of zero. They can recognize human faces.” Bees often get a bad rap, Gorman noted, because they sting , and he has endured his share of pain from the hobby. “After a while, it hardly bothers you at all,” he said simply. It’s worth the discomfort to know he’s doing his part to help the environment, he said. “As a group, we ’re doing our best to save the bees,” he explained. Due to a variety of factors, including loss of habitat, the honey bee population is declining. A ttending the workshop provides people with a one-year membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Established in 1876 as the Lancaster Honey Producers Association, the society exists to promote better understanding of honey bee biology and behavior; provide public awareness, education and ser vice; and promote honey and o t h e r p ro d uc t s o f t h e hive. Meetings include educational topics about

beekeeping as well as hive checks at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 1446 Auc t ion R oad in Manheim. “Members can come once a month to the center, and they can learn all about the bees without having to handle the bees,” Gorman said. “Experts will show the hives and talk about beekeeping.” The workshop is a good first step into beekeeping, and it provides the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what beekeeping is all about, he noted. “If you are at all curious ab out hone y b e es and saving the bees, come to this workshop,” Gorman said. “ You’ll get a good, basic understanding of how important bees are to our environment and our food chain.” S p a c e i s l i m i t e d fo r the workshop, and registration is required. Youths encouraged to audition for musical soundtrack Calling young singers between the ages of 10 and 16. Steven Courtney is looking for you. Courtney, a renowned singer-song writer, has written a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” and he’s ready to start recording the soundtrack. “We are searching for talented and passionate volunteer youth actors to record and sing on the production soundtrack for this enchanting musical,” said Courtney, who is collaborating on the project with K ami Deppen, owner/creative director of Big Dream Creative Arts Studio in Manheim. Selected actors will record their vocal parts at Courtney’s studio in Manheim between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, and between 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4. “ You must be able to commit to both recording days in order to be considered,” Courtney said. Available roles are Joni, a spirited and independent young girl who loves adventure and the great outdoors; Dylan, a curious and imaginative boy who is torn between his love for gaming and the desire to connect with his best friends; Spark, a male elf who lives in the trees; Ember, a female elf who lives in the trees; Taylor, a comedic and empathetic character who serves as the balancing core of the story; and Lizzy, a loyal and dependable friend who provides support and guidance to the group. Ensemble singers are also needed. “Once the vocal cast is selected, each participant will receive a link to the list of songs and musical soundtracks that have

been prerecorded here at my studio, Radio Vibe R e co rd i n g ,” C o u r t n e y shared. “Once the songs are completed with the vocal performance, the soundtrack will be available for all future productions of the show. This will allow future productions to learn the songs and prepare for rehearsals and shows. Actors/cast will perform the youth musical with the tracks while singing live.” Courtney said he’s been exploring the idea of writing a youth musical for years. “ The concept f o r ‘ W h e n We C l i m b Trees’ resonated with me personally, and I began to comb through my catalog of songs to see if I could create a jukebox- style musical,” he commented. “I ended up using seven songs from the back catalog and writing three new songs for the musical.” He described the soundtrack as “’70s singer-songwriter meets Motown.” T he musical focuses on a t ig ht-k nit g roup of friends who struggle with the conflict between sharing real-life adventures and giving into the allure of gaming devices and screen time.

“Simply put, childhood is a f leeting season of time,” Courtney remarked. “‘When We Climb Trees’ looks at the need to find balance in our friendships to make time to play, explore, pretend, using imagination and having fun with the ever-present and mostly passive world of devices, screen time and streaming.” Courtney and Deppen worked together previously on a TV show Courtney produced called “The Steven Courtney Channel.” It aired locally on WGAL. “Kami created a recurring character for the show called Art Girl,” Courtney recalled. “Our collaboration to produce ‚ÄòWhen We Climb Trees’ will be our first youth musical effort together.” “When We Climb Trees” will premiere later this summer. Eye care advice offered

January is National Eye Care Month. The Lancaster County Office of Aging has offered information on protecting one’s eye health. Maintaining regular eye appointments is a critical factor in preventing and managing eye diseases that can lead to vision loss and possible blindness, including cataracts, which is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults; diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to blood vessels in the back of the eye; glaucoma, which can cause damage to the optic nerve; and age-related macular degeneration, the gradual breakdown of light-sensitive tissue in the eye. Regular eye care appointments can help people and their providers to keep up to date on any changes in patients’ vision and eye care needs. People should maintain their blood sugar level, as those who have diabetes are more prone to eye problems. Managing one’s blood sugar levels can help prevent eye issues and other complications. Having a healthy blood press ure is imp or tant in reducing one’s risk of developing vision problems, such as hypertensive retinopathy or optic neuropathy. People may speak with their medical provider regarding their risk factors. Additionally, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, including kale, spinach and collard greens, can lower a person’s risk of long-term eye diseases, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, which affects a person’s central vision. Eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E may be particularly helpful. Pe o p l e s h o u l d l i m i t mobile phone, computer and television screen time and take a break every 20 minutes. Spending too much time staring at a screen can cause eye strain. To avoid the r isk of infection, people should always wash their hands thoroughly before touching their eyes. They should avoid rubbing their eyes with their hands and use a clean tissue instead. Wearing sunglasses with UV- A and UV-B radiation-protected lenses can shield the eyes from the sun’s potentially harmful rays.
