Eagle Scout Project Will Aid Rail Trail Riders BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

yclists who ex perience mechanical trouble while pedaling the Enola Low Grade Trail in Providence Township now have access to a repair station, thanks to Ryan Vanover of Quarryville. The Boy Scout Troop 76 member opted to install a Dero Fixit unit as his Eagle Scout project. Riding the trails is a favorite pastime for Ryan and his parents, Raymond and Robin. About seven years ago, while enjoying a ride in Cape Henlopen State Park, the Vanovers encountered a trail-side repair station. Ryan tucked the memory away for later. “I knew this would be a project a while ago,” he explained. In September 2020, at the start of his senior year at Solanco High School, Ryan officially began his project. The budget

included $1,300 for the purchase of the Fixit unit and $100 for the concrete base, so Ryan solicited donations to cover the costs. He also talked with Providence Township officials to identify a site for the unit. He had hoped to put it near one of the Fairview Road trailheads because the Va n o v e r s h a d l i v e d n e a r b y ,

“If you don’t have your tools, (the Fixit) is the coolest thing.” but the Lancaster Bicycle Club had already installed one there. Instead, Ryan was asked to place his Fixit unit at the Sigman Road trailhead. The work was completed in two parts. The concrete pad was poured in November 2020 and allowed to cure for at least 56

days. The unit was installed on Jan. 9. The station includes screwdrivers, wrenches, and other tools. “Pretty much anything you need to fix anything, unless you have a flat with a big hole,” Ryan said. Ryan cited the Scout Law as part of the motivation behind his project, noting that the Law states that a Scout is helpful. “(The Fixit) is a tremendous help if your chain’s popped off and you don’t have somebody to help you,” he said. “If you don’t have your tools, (the Fixit) is the coolest thing.” Ryan credited his mother and Eagle Scouts Bobby Kiesel, Troop 76, and Daniel Althoff, Troop 91, with assisting on the project.

Boy Scout Troop 76 member Ryan Vanover installed a Dero Fixit station on the Enola Low Grade Trail.

Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings.

“We are workforce specialists,” commented Judy Wechter, site administrator for Pennsylvania CareerLink Lancaster County. “We provide job training and supports for individuals who are displaced and currently looking for employment, and we are an outlet for the county for employment and workforce resources.” See CareerLink pg 2

To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked.

The CareerLink facility is located in the same building as Liberty Place, 1016 N. Charlotte St., Lancaster, but during the pandemic nearly all of its services are offered solely online. “Everything can be done virtually except physically working on a computer. We hope to, in January, allow people to come in to use a computer,” Wechter said. “We are very sensitive to people who don’t have technology or don’t have internet access. We are working on providing Wi-Fi in the parking lot.” CareerLink provides three levels of service, and clients may choose which to use. The self-service option features a career resource room where individuals may use computers to conduct job searches, update resumes, file Unemployment Compensation (UC) claims, and print or fax jobrelated documents. The enhanced service includes computer usage as well as attendance at workshops, job fairs, and other activities offered by CareerLink. Personalized service - the top tier - includes a career navigator who provides personalized assistance as the client explores career options. The navigator can administer

assessments of interests and strengths, interpret the results, and help clients determine what they need to access those careers. Wechter noted that $10,000 per person is available for up to two years of training in high occupancy careers. Soft skills training and computer-read resume development are also available. “You need to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can to find a job today,” Wechter said, adding that CareerLink can help both laborers and executives find meaningful work. “Nowadays, everybody needs help.” Wechter knows whereof she speaks, as she has been a CareerLink client three times. “My success in finding employment was due to CareerLink. (It) gave me the support I needed,” she said. CareerLink is not about just finding employment, Wechter asserted. “It’s setting you on a career path,” she said. “We meet people where they are. The goal is a sustainable career.” When appropriate, career navigators will refer clients to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The two organizations collaborate and support clients where possible.

Schmitts Win Teacher Impact Awards

Greg and Sheila Schmitt are recipients of WITF Teacher Impact Awards.

Bart-Colerain Elementary third-grade teachers Greg and Sheila Schmitt are recipients of WITF Teacher Impact Awards. WITF, a public broadcasting television station in Harrisburg, partnered with Rotary District 7390 to honor teachers in seven counties, including the Schmitts, for their “exemplary dedication to their students and community.” At a recent virtual Solanco School Board meeting,

superintendent Brian Bliss and school board members expressed their appreciation to the Schmitts for their instructional excellence and their commitment to their students. Teacher Impact Awards honor educators who have made a significant difference in the lives of their students, according to WITF. Educators currently teaching kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible for consideration.

The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten pro-

All programs are run in English, but Spanish language translation and materials are available. ASL interpretation has been provided in the past and may be again upon request. Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a one-day event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief

To fund the program, Osborne sold “Shop With a Cop” yard signs, and she found donors plentiful. “ We raised money to help fund it for the next few years going forward,” she said. Before the event, Osborne was looking forward to giving the children a special experience. “All the families whose children were accepted were ecstatic,” she said. Following the program, the “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page had garnered positive comments and expressions of gratitude. The mother of a young man named Sebastian who took part wrote, “Thanks to everyone for their kindness and this positively amazing experience.”

Osborne gave priority to those areas when organizing the event, accepting nominations from pastors, school counselors, and other members of the community for children living in the greater Paradise area and the Southern End. She initially hoped to include 30 children, but COVID-19 restrictions forced her to scale back to 15. “I am giving the opportunity to kids who would benefit from positive law enforcement interaction,” Osborne said, noting that students who had been the victim of a crime or other Lt. Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster and the organizer of the first Shop With a Cop event held on Dec. 5 at Lafayette Fire Company, was overwhelmed at the response she received when she began planning the program in early fall. “I have been amazed at the outpouring and generosity of people for this program,” said Osborne, who hopes to expand the event into other areas of the county in the future. The program involved 15 pre-selected students meeting with 15 volunteer State Police officers and a few police from local districts at

the fire station at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 5. Osborne had paired up the elementary-age children with the officers. Each child was given a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, and the students and officers were bused to the businesss’s Lincoln Highway store so students could shop for family members. Solanco’s Rally Against L-S Falls Short score at 14 all before back-to-back buckets by Paige Phillips (9 points, 3 steals) put the hosts in front. The visitors responded again, this time with a 6-0 run for a 20-18 lead at the break. L-S dropped in four of their eight treys in the third quarter and extended the lead to 35-26 before buckets by Jenna Ehlers and Seiberlich cut the lead to five, setting the stage for a spirited fourth quarter. “We knew their style of play is to shoot the three,” said McDowell. “They hit 33% (8 for 24). “And in the fourth, the game sped up. We needed to be more composed physically and needed to execute better. We are still finding our way on the court, challenging everyone to step up,” he added. “Once we get everyone on the same page, we’ll be fine.” Jenna Daveler dropped in a career-high 16 points for L-S. Phillips, with nine, was tops for Solanco. Ehlers, who sparked the JV win with 12 points, came off the bench with eight. Solanco got off to good start Tuesday, almost matching Cocalico in the opening quarter and staying within striking distance at the break 23-17. Held to single digits again in the third, the visitors

The visitors jumped out to a 1715 advantage on the strength of three long range bombs but just as quickly, L-S responded. Burton buried three treys and L-S outscored the Mules 17-6 to take the lead for good. The third quarter was nip-andtuck with the visitors holding a 16-15 edge, but the final eight minutes belonged to the hosts. L-S tallied 13 points and held the Mules to two field goals in running

Students Accepted To District Band Emma Zdrojewski, a Solanco High School sophomore, recently qualified for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 South Honor Band for 2021. She earned fourth chair out of 41 auditioning flutes. Students recorded themselves performing the assigned audition repertoire and submitted their recordings for judging. Participants were ranked and received feedback. Although there will not be an in-person festival due to COVID-19, Emma now has the opportunity to prepare more music in order to reaudition for a place in the PMEA Region 5 Honor Band. Region 5 consists of 15 counties. Placement in the Region 5 Honor Band would then lead to an opportunity for Emma to audition for AllState Band. In addition to Emma, junior Juliana Weiss, a clarinetist, and junior Martin Stoner, a tuba player, also participated in the audition process.
