Will Orphie See His Shadow? By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Octorara Orphie is slated to reveal the truth during the 112th Groundhog Day celebration at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville. The public is invited to watch the spectacle unfold on Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Chateau in the Valley of White Rock, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville, beginning at 8:15 a.m. Guests should arrive early to secure a good place to park their vehicles and their behinds to watch the show. The festivities will kick off with a ceremonial parade from the covered bridge over the Octorara Creek. Once all of the men wearing black top hats and white nightshirts are assembled in front of the Pinnacle of Prognostication - an erstwhile manure spreader - the program will commence. Hibernating Gov. Richard M.
Rankin, positioned upon the pinnacle, will consult with Octorara Orphie, the lodge’s mascot, and hear groundhogsighting reports from a half-dozen observation squads that have spent the early morning searching for the burrows of Marmota monax, also called woodchuck. The Hibernating Governor will announce this year’s forecast from the Pinnacle of Prognostication. Defender of the Faith Stuart J. Mylin will give remarks, and lodge members accompanied by the Groundhog Marching Band will demonstrate the Groundhog Jig. But wait - there’s more. The Baby Class of 2020 will embark on an odyssey into the world of Arctomanciferial Predictification during the celebration. The inductees will willingly dress as stereotypical infants and undergo a Baptism by Fire and Water. They will submit one of their class members to a dunking
in the Octorara Creek, and all of them will bend over as a cannon is fired over their hindmost parts. Spoiler alert: The cannon only goes boom; it does not launch a heavy projectile over the adult babies. This year’s Baby Class includes Richard Benner of Groundhog Day will be celebrated on Feb. 2 at the Chateau in the Valley of White Rock, where the Lancaster, Kevin season’s forecast will be announced. Broderick of Kirkwood, Joel Neff of New Providence, Shane Snyder of charge. Coffee and doughnuts will be Willow Street, and Brian Stoltzfus of provided. For more information about the SlumQuarryville. If readers are enticed to stand out bering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville in the cold - and possibly rain or and the 112th Groundhog Day celebrasnow - and watch adult men have tion, readers may contact Orphie’s Lip serious fun, they may do so free of William Forrey at 717-940-6372.

Artists Invited To Submit Work Young Readers Needed For Pet-Themed Show For Animal Shelter Program By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Sure, you probably have heard of students reading to dogs, but did you know that cats enjoy similar attention? “Our adoptable cats appreciate being read to by our Rescue Readers as reading aloud has a positive impact on the cats in our cat colonies, while also helping the readers become more comfortable and confident reading aloud,” said Humane Pennsylvania events and social media coordinator Kylie Layman, who is in charge of the Rescue Readers program. The program is less than a year old and was developed to provide youths ages 4 to 13 with opportunities to interact with the cats in the shelter,
expand their reading proficiency, and give back to their community. Seven-year-old Hunter Griffin and his parents, Oanh To and William Griffin of Manheim Township, spent time on Jan. 12 with several felines at See Rescue Readers pg 8

Asked how he and Roger Weaver became co-lead pastors of Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, Dan Cloyd immediately mentioned the prayer teams that were at work during the church’s pastoral search. “All during the search process, there was a lot of prayer going on, and the group that was praying said to the search team, ‘Maybe you should be thinking about two lead pastors,’” said Cloyd. On Sept. 1, 2019, Cloyd and Weaver began leading the church, leading and overseeing the church ministries, and taking turns preaching. Cloyd is full time at the church, while Weaver is half time. Cloyd oversees the church’s ministry of congregational life and works with Danielle Hofstetter, who is minister to children and families. Cloyd also oversees administration of the inside of the building. Weaver oversees mission and evangelism, and he works with his wife, Brenda, who is director of youths and young adults. Weaver oversees the trustees who care for the building and grounds. Matt Fahnestock serves as minister of music. Cloyd is originally from Kansas, and he attended Oklahoma Wesleyan University before first venturing to Lancaster County as a Black Rock Retreat employee in the summer of 1984 between his junior and senior year. After graduating, he returned to work at Black Rock before becoming a Bible teacher at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS). He worked at the

Roger Weaver (left) and Dan Cloyd are sharing the pulpit as co-lead pastors of Mellinger Mennonite Church in Lancaster. The pair began leading the church together on Sept. 1, 2019. the two men how they would feel about serving together, both responded favorably. Looking ahead, the two pastors have been examining the concepts of community, connection, authenticity, identity, and growth. “We feel like there are some key basics the church ought to be about based on Scripture,” noted Cloyd, who added that loving God, loving neighbors, and preaching the Gospel to all the world are among those. “ We want to focus on the basics (because) if the church can do
these things well, we will be a healthy church,” he said. Mellinger Church holds Sunday school each Sunday at 9 a.m., with worship at 10 a.m. Emmaus Road Café, located on the church property, hosts Lifetree Café events as a regular outreach ministry. Triple Tree Church meets in the café as well. The Parent Preschool Center, with more than 40 years of ministry, is housed on the lower floor of the church. school until 1987, during which time Mellinger became his home church. In 1987, he became a youth pastor at Manor Brethren in Christ Church in Millersville. He remained in that position until 1993, when he became the lead pastor of a church in Argonia, Kan. In 2000, he and his wife, Corene, helped a friend plant a new church in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In 2002, Cloyd returned to Lancaster County, performing construction work until he became a member of the staff at Living Faith Church of God, which met in the LMHS cafeteria. In 2008, he pastored the Lititz Wesleyan Church. In 2015, Cloyd took time off to help care for his father-in-law. He was contacted by the Mellinger search committee in the spring of 2019. Weaver has been involved with Mellinger for nearly 30 years, serving on the preaching team for more than five years. He completed a three-year layperson’s educational program offered through the Lancaster Mennonite Conference called The Step Program in 2014. Lancaster Mennonite Conference is now known as LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches. Weaver was surprised to be nominated for pastor, and he was unsure of taking on the role. “I always saw myself serving as a layperson,” said Weaver, who has worked in masonry most of his adult life. “I never saw myself as serving in a (pastoral) role.” As time passed and the search committee continued to return to Weaver as a candidate, he began to see things differently. “It became evident that the Lord was leading in this, and it was humbling and scary,” he said. The Arts at Millersville will welcome Yamato: The Drummers of Japan and its show “Jhonetsu Passion! to the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville, on the Millersville University campus. Yamato is composed of dozens of performers who travel around the world with approximately 40 of Japan’s traditional Taiko drums. The group is in its 26th season, celebrating more than 4,000 performances in 54 countries and reaching nearly 8 million people. Yamato is based in Nara Prefecture’s Asuka
Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture, where the musicians engage in daily strength training, instrument practice, and program rehearsal. The troupe starts each performance by hitting a drum that weighs half a ton and was made from a single piece of wood from a 400-year-old tree. The performers move their whole bodies to strike the instrument with the belief that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life and the epitome of the Japanese spirit. I thought we played more balanced in the second half.” Trout, Alana Yoder and Llynd Rapant collectively stuck to Unser, holding her scoreless for the game. “Unser had 35 points against Columbia,” McDowell noted. “Our girls had her frustrated. They did an outstanding job.” Adding to the defensive highlights was Jade Eshleman (8 points) with 11 rebounds, Rapant (4 points) with seven boards, and Jenna Dombach (6 points) and Sammi Jackson (2 points) with two steals each. Thursday, January 23, the Mares led from start to finish in key 47-40 triumph. “They were coming in off that win over Central so I was a bit concerned,” said McDowell. “But Paige knocked down that first three of the game and we never looked back. Now, since Northern Lebanon also beat Central, we’re a game and a half up and control our own destiny.” Phillips drained a pair of threes in that first quarter and Solanco held the early lead, 9-6. After a deadeven second frame, the Mares were still in front 16-13. They extended that lead with a tight 10-8 edge in the third quarter before both teams exploded down the stretch. Solanco poured in 21 points in the finals eight minutes despite netting just two field goals, a put back jumper and a layup via a steal, both by Sammi Jackson. The rest of the points came at the foul line where the team was 17-for-22 in the quarter and 25-of-34 for the game. “Sammi’s baskets came on backto-back possessions and kept the momentum going our way,” said McDowell. “And then they started fouling, trying to extend the game. So we had to step up and make the foul shots. “Defensively we knew we had to defend the three-point line,” he continued. “They did hit four but I felt they earned them. And we did a nice job on the boards. It was pretty much one and done with Jade, Ilynd and Angela taking charge.” Dombach led the offensive charge, finishing with an impressive 10-of-11 from the foul and two field goals for 14 points. Other winners included Jackson Houghton’s 8-4 decision over Jordan Holland (126). “Wins by fall are always a huge bonus,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “Jackson had a big win against one of their tougher wrestlers. There were a few scary moments, but he did what he needed to do to win the match. Joey Vandegriff wrestled a tough match coming up short in the end, 5-3,” he continued. “He has had a lot of those this season but if he keeps working, and has a good attitude, he can turn those close matches into wins as we enter the post-season.”

an unblemished 6-0 mark and CV fell into second place at 5-2. McCaskey won three of the first four bouts to take an early 15-6 lead but the Mules gained momentum as the match went on, winning eight of the next ten, including two by forfeit, to pull away. Dominic Flatt (106) posted the fastest fall of the night, turning Javan Christian in just 50 seconds and putting the Mules in front for good, 22-21. Steven Williams (145) capped the evening with the second fastest pinfall, decking Christian Jordan in 56 seconds. Wade Adams opened the action with a 1:00 fall at 152 and Nate Neuhauser pinned in 1:45 at 285. The Mules also got bonus points

bowing out 61-41. “It just came down to us not executing late in the game,” said head coach David Long of the closely contested Garden Spot game. “But we are excited that we are starting to compete in these games, we just need to learn how to finish!” This one was back-and-forth. With five points from Colesen Shaeffer (who finished with 15), Solanco jumped out to a 10-8 first quarter lead. The Spartans responded with a 17-12 run through the second quarter to take a 25-22 lead at the break. Spot’s Andrew Zentner, with 11 of his game-high 24 points, fueled a 15-10 third quarter frame that saw the visitors extend the lead to 40-32. Solanco looked to rally down the stretch, outscoring the visitors 1715 but it wasn’t enough. Jalen Henry, who posted a season-high 15 points, bucketed six in that pivotal fourth quarter. Despite leading scorer and point guard Seth Beers out of the lineup, L-S dropped in five treys, each by a different player, and jumped out to a 17-12 first quarter lead. They extended the advantage to 29-20 at the break and used a 19-2 third quarter run to take control. Sheaffer and Zed Baker each went 1-for-2 from the stripe to account for Solanco’s scoring. Solanco looked to rally down the stretch. Sparked by Ethan Clary’s eight points, the Mules netted 19 and held L-S to 13 but it wasn’t enough. Clary posted 10 points, Ryan Smith added nine on three triples and Sheaffer, Baker and Tyler Burger each finished with six Henry (3) and Martin Grawe (1) rounded out the scoring. The Mules are currently 2-16 overall. WRESTLING Solanco wrapped up Section One action last Wednesday with a 48-24 win at McCaskey, pushing their league mark to 4-3 along with Penn Manor and Cocalico. Rescue Readers from pg 1 the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The family had a half-hour slot during which Hunter read aloud from the Pete the Cat book “Snow Daze” and the titles in the “Little Critter Bedtime Stories” box set. To said she learned about the Rescue Readers program from a friend on Facebook, and because their family has an interest in the stray cats in their neighborhood, she signed up Hunter. “We’re teaching Hunter to be kind and respectful to all creatures,” To explained. Hunter sat on the floor during his time in the observation room
that housed at least four cats. Right after Hunter took his seat, a cat named Wendy climbed into his lap and stayed there for nearly the entire time. The other cats also checked him out. “When she first got here, Miss Izzy Kitty was shy,” adoption counselor Genisus Hess commented. “This is the first day that she’s running out to meet people. This socializing is great for her.” “I think it’s such a good program,” added volunteer Sharon Swanger. Rescue Readers meet at the Humane League of Lancaster County each Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for
half-hour reading sessions. Each reader must preregister for a designated reading time and be accompanied by a parent or other adult guardian during their visit. Readers are welcome to bring their own books, or they may choose some from the shelter’s bookshelf. Hess expressed her excitement about the program, saying, “I love books, I love cats, and I love that we can bring the two together.” Although the Rescue Readers program is in its infancy, Layman is exploring ways to make it better. “My goal is to revamp it into more of an experience for the kids because currently, there is very little interaction between our staff and readers, and I want to cultivate relationships with the kids and parents who take time out of their
weekend to bring their kid in to read to cats,” Layman said. “I want to create an incentive for the kids so they are encouraged to come back multiple times. I want to hopefully partner with a local bookstore or businesses that could be part of the kids’ ‘welcome packet’ and offer a coupon or item geared toward reading.” The To-Griffin family plans to return every Sunday through the end of February just for the fun of it. “(My favorite part was) petting the cats because they’re nice,” Hunter said after his first visit. To preregister for a reading session, readers may call the shelter’s front desk staff members at 717-393-6551.
Pet-Themed Art Show from pg 1 finger on a wooden counter. “He was thumping his tail to greet people.” Toward the end of his life, Milo developed cancer, and he died in November 2018. Gaul, who also had serious health issues, died at age 93 on Jan. 5, 2019, shortly before the couple’s 10th anniversary. In working through her grief from the two losses, Koppenhaver thought about how to commemorate Gaul and Milo. Thus, the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition was created. The inaugural show last year featured 197 pieces of art related to pets. “There were all kinds of animals and some we couldn’t recognize,” Koppenhaver said. Styles ranged from the serious to the whimsical, including a cat wearing high-heeled shoes. “This was the first time we called for (a range of skill, from) children to professionals. We had refrigerator art next to $750 pieces,” she added. The second annual “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition will be held this spring at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Entries are being accepted, with a deadline of Wednesday, April 1. Initially, the deadline had been a month earlier, but gallery curator and publicist Stephanie Cole explained that an extra month had been added so local art teachers have more time to participate with their classes. During the application process, digital images of artwork may be submitted. The originals do not have to be brought to the studio until the week of April 20, Cole said. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.
A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be bestowed in the student and adult categories. Entries will be juried to ensure that the pieces in the show have theme-related subjects and that they are appropriate to be viewed by audiences of all ages. “(The subject) should be an animal that they’ve cared for, that they’ve known and loved,” Koppenhaver said. Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger, with a reduced rate, as compared to the adult fee schedule, for additional entries. The artwork may be sold through the exhibition, and Mulberry Art Studios will take a commission. The proceeds will be donated to The Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Last year’s show raised $1,000 for the organization. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and aims to facilitate the adoption of unwanted animals. Cole provided a statement from foundation volunteer Ellen Stark, who said, “(Donations received will help in a variety of ways), from basic needs such as food and bedding to providing medical care to dogs that, in a lot of instances, may have been neglected, abused, or never seen a veterinarian. Sebastian Foundation relies on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future. No amount is too small to make a difference.” Readers may email Cole at Stephanie.MulberryArt@gmail.com for details on the submission process.

At its inaugural dinner and annual meeting in January, the Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) presented the 2019 Chair Award to James Stephens of Lititz, CFSP, Clark Associates Inc., Lancaster, for his volunteer service and impactful legislative affairs efforts supporting the merit shop mission. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Cynthia M. Field of Mount Joy, former ABC Keystone vice president, who retired in September 2019, for her 38 years of service to the Keystone Chapter. The event took place at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. The Chair Award was presented to Stephens by the chapter’s immediate past chair, Douglas M. Dvorchak, ARM, assistant vice president, Murray, Lancaster. Current president/CEO G. David Sload presented the award to Field. Each year, the past chair is given the opportunity to recognize individual members whose service
to ABC and the construction industry went above and beyond the call of duty. During his time on the Government Affairs Committee, Stephens has been passionate about sharing with legislators how current legislation impacts the construction industry and workforce development. The Distinguished Service Award has only been given to nine other individuals since the chapter was chartered in 1959. During her time with ABC, Field first was employed as an administrative assistant and through her dedication and continual growth within the association, she served as a director and ultimately as vice president of the association. Field was recognized as a mentor for both staff and members over the years. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors is a construction trade association based in Manheim, representing more than 500 construction-related firms. Lancaster EMS has been awarded grant funds in the amount of $4,770 from Dart Foundation toward the purchase of seven Pediatric Ambulance Child Restraints, which are designed to help transport pediatric patients safely in ambulances. The funds were presented to Lancaster EMS leadership staff by Dart Foundation committee members Tammy Kline and Annette Walters on Jan. 22 at the Millersville EMS station. The safety equipment will allow EMS service providers to protect children who are being transported in its ambulances by safely holding them in place on the stretcher and preventing them from making any potentially dangerous movements during the transport. The Pediatric Ambulance Child Restraints are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and meet infection control standards. The harness is padded to keep infants comfortable during transportation and reduce the risk of pressure during longdistance transportation.
