Local Baker Takes Top Youth Prize At Farm Show By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The oven was busy at Anna Kreider’s Drumore Township home during the first week of January while the Solanco High School junior finished perfecting her recipe for apple streusel bars. On Jan. 5, Anna and her parents, Wayne and Carla Kreider, carefully chauffeured her baked goods to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg, turned in the tasty treats for judging, and waited to hear the results. Anna’s journey to the Farm Show began with the 2018 Solanco Fair, where she entered in the youth division of the PA Preferred baking contest; all entries needed to include at least two ingredients
certified as PA Preferred. It was Anna’s second attempt; she had entered cookies in the contest as a sixth-grader and won. At the Farm Show, Anna’s cookies did not place, but she and Carla took it as a learning opportunity. “We didn’t know what to expect,” Anna recalled. “We saw the winners had multiple layers in their bars. It was something to keep in mind if I ever wanted to enter again.” After a five-year break, Anna decided to try again. “My mom and I sat down and listed what we liked sweetwise and dessert-wise,” Anna said. They tested multiple varieties of apples before settling on Granny Smith. “They’re a tart apple,” Anna explained. “It
balances (the sweetness) out.” The final result was an eight-layer bar of yummy goodness that took first place at the Solanco Fair. A shortbread-type crust was topped with homemade caramel sauce and sprinkled with chopped pecans and toffee bits. Apples seasoned with brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves were laid down next, and then a cheesecake-like filling was poured over everything. The bars were finished with a streusel topping containing old-fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, and more pecans and toffee bits. After the bars were baked and cooled completely, a drizzle of caramel sauce Anna Kreider (left) accepted her prize from one of the judges finished everything off. as the winner of the PA Preferred baking contest, youth See Local Baker pg 2 division, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Jan. 5.

A Christmas postcard sent out by A Woman’s Concern shows a photo of double purple doors decorated with holiday wreaths and an “open” sign. “Our purple doors mean ‘love, compassion, and support,’” said Jill Hartman, executive director of A Woman’s Concern, which relocated from Duke Street in Lancaster city to 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, in July 2018. “We painted the doors purple so our clients could find us.” These clients are the more than 600 women who benefit from A Woman’s Concern services each year. Those services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and education on healthy relationships, pregnancy, parenting, and more. “We create a loving, compassionate, nonjudgmental environment for clients, so they get all the support they need,” explained Hartman. The move nearly quadrupled the space that A Woman’s Concern could utilize, and staff and volunteers are planning to offer more services in the future by partnering and collaborating with other community organizations. Among those services are a program called Redefined, which will aid in healing for women, and a fatherhood mentoring program called The Fatherhood Journey. Matthew Neff of Family of Restoration Ministries has already run a fatherhood workshop, and Neff will soon become the first volunteer male client advocate for A Woman’s Concern. “I think that will make a huge difference in reaching the boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands,” added Laura Kline, marketing and communications director. Other services that the organization will offer will include working with a local market to provide dietitians to teach prenatal and postnatal nutrition to clients. In addition, a volunteer will help the organization expand lactation services, and the Knights of Columbus has funded a parttime medical position for 24 months, along with purchasing materials to expand the CPR program, which is a family safety initiative A Woman’s Concern provides. Offering services in both Spanish and English has been an important goal for the organization. One paid and one volunteer staff member are bilingual, and Kline has reworked the website, www.pregnancylancaster.com, to include basic information in Spanish as well as English. Of course, more space means more opportunity to offer clients medical services as well. A room to conduct ultrasounds and space for client advocates, along with meeting and business space
and offices, were all made possible by the larger, new facility. According to Hartman, the nonprofit has been available to local women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1972, when it opened as Birthright. As A Woman’s Concern outgrew its Duke Street location, an East Chestnut Street facility was opened, but in July 2017, Harvest Bible Chapel offered its administrative offices, including two buildings on Millersville Pike to the organization. A successful 2018 capital campaign provided funds to renovate the main building. A grant from the High Foundation will help remodel the carriage house, called Hope House, which is located behind the building, for meetings and classes. Hope House also offers large items that clients may need, such as cribs and strollers. A boutique for smaller items is found in the front foyer of the main building. Hartman explained that as a “hand-up” organization, A Woman’s Concern allows clients to work with client advocates and receive points, which they can redeem for items they need for their babies. “Many of the items come from (area) church (members) who hold baby showers (for us),” explained Hartman. “We have a wish list on our website.” The baby items are one more way A Woman’s Concern aims to create a welcoming and positive atmosphere for clients. “What we give here is knowledge and empowerment and love and compassion,” said Hartman. “ A Woman’s Concern will hold its annual banquet featuring Dr. Ron Archer at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, April 11. Readers who would like more information about the ministry may visit the website or call 717-394-1561. Pictured on front: Jill Hartman (left photo), executive director of A Woman’s Concern, looks forward to seeing clients at the organization’s new location at 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. Laura Kline (right photo), marketing and communications director for A Woman’s Concern, holds one of many baby items available at the organization’s boutique, which is open exclusively to clients. A Woman’s Concern also provides cribs, strollers, and more in Hope House, located behind the organization’s main building.
Local Baker from pg 1 “One (Solanco Fair) judge said to add salt to the caramel sauce, but my family didn’t like it,” Anna remarked. “An aunt suggested sprinkling special sea salt on top, and that was a nice texture.” Anna made the bars for her family’s Christmas dinner and thought they were too sweet, so the week of Farm Show, her first attempt at the bars featured a decrease in the amount of cinnamon. She did not think the result was as good as she had hoped, though, so she made the bars again with the full amount. At the Farm Show, Anna’s bars competed against 63 other entries. Each judge tasted at least two entries, and then every judge sampled the top 10. Anna was thrilled to learn that her bars had been included in that second group and would have been happy with that. Thus, when her name was the final one called, she was stunned. “It was a shock,” Anna said. “I didn’t think I was getting first place at all. My dad was patting my back to get me to go up (to accept my prize).” As a reward, Anna received a big blue rosette and $500, which promptly went into the bank. Anna has no immediate plans for the cash, but she might use it for college. She hopes to major in psychology and eventually become a middle school guidance counselor. Anna would like to make a difference in the lives of young students. Anna also does not plan to make her apple streusel bars again anytime soon, although she has received numerous requests. “My recipe took three hours to make one pan of nine bars,” she pointed out. The time and effort to enter the Farm Show was worth it, even if she had not won, Anna said. “Having fun is an important thing while doing this. You never know what to expect,” Anna commented. “And it’s good to support the Farm Show.” Apple Streusel Bars by Anna P. Kreider

She described the nature of her visual artistry as earthly and rhythmic, and she aims to bring out emotions felt globally in today’s world. “I was born in Liberia, West Africa, and first came to America as an exchange student, McCritty said. “Africans celebrate the happiness and sadness of life with dance and rhythms - suffering but still smiling. My work reflects the experience of my transitions, reflecting my West African roots and the rhythm of my life in Lancaster. These two rhythms are deeply connected to me. McCritty uses mixed media and found objects as she seeks to reveal the emotions of happiness, sadness, and discomfort, along with the notion of elegance, dignity, pride, and passion. “The materials that connect with my creations are ones like metal, wood, and cardboard that reflect everyday life. Where someone else might throw them away, I incorporate them into works of art, she commented. Fairview Full Gospel Church, spoken word artist David Barton, and the Cielos Abierto Dance Troupe. The evening will end with the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. The concert has its roots in a program that has historically been organized by Barton. This year, the Ware Center has taken on the role of producing the show. Barton is still involved with the planning, and many of the groups have appeared in the event previously. “The big addition would be the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. At 60 to 70 voices strong, they will be a great addition to the lineup and a rousing way to end the evening, said Ware Center arts communication manager Amy Banks. “We really wanted to represent gospel music through different communities here in the city, and as a result, we will have a diverse mix of music, dance, and spoken word. Banks noted that nearly all of the performers are from Lancaster, but Fairview Full Gospel Church is from York. While gospel music is religious and spiritual in nature, Banks said that she considers the First Friday concert a secular event where attendees might have a personal experience of the Spirit through performing arts. “My hope would be that attendees will have an uplifting and joyous experience, she remarked. Additionally, a reception for the art exhibit “Head Series by Gerry McCritty will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on First Friday in the Ware Center’s Regitz Gallery. Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration. The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals. “It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme, said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues. The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous. The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist - swing. Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed by Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon. “Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer, said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. The best part is that the three of us are actually friends; we all care very much about each other, and I think this will translate to the audience clearly and add another layer to the show. The show will tour to venues across Lancaster County with

Making Disciples In Uganda Pastor Earns Doctorate Through LBC
Before you go to those GARAGE SALES – Check out the Classifieds!
There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’”

was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years. The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. Individuals are encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive. In 2004, the AHA created Go
Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. “In the third part (of the afternoon session, Weaver) will talk about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and how it’s not all the same,” said Dirks. “There are (foods) our grandparents and great grandparents cooked, that we don’t cook so much,” she added, noting that schnitz un knepp, a dish made with ham, apples, and dumplings, is not cooked as often as it once was. There is a cost to attend each workshop. Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and the foods that this type of garden brought to the tables of different regions of Pennsylvania. The four-part session will begin with the seeds the immigrants brought with them. “Some of those seeds had also come from South America,” said Dirks, explaining that Spanish and Italian explorers brought seeds back to their homelands and that those seeds moved north through Europe and then returned to America with Pennsylvania settlers. Another segment of the afternoon presentation will focus on the foods that are traditional among Pennsylvania Dutch families. “(The kitchen garden) was the woman’s garden close to the kitchen,” said Dirks, who noted that foursquare gardens usually contained carrots, bush beans, and pole beans, with a border of medicinal herbs, along with cooking herbs. Potatoes, cabbages, and onions that were used in bulk were grown in large fields. According to Dirks, Weaver will also spend time discussing the distinctions between types

Joanne Ranck Dirks, assistant manager for the Farm & Gardens at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, is looking forward to the interactive segment of the upcoming workshop focusing on traditional seeds and Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “All of us eat food, and many of (the attendees) will be gardeners,” shared Dirks. “When we make space for discussion, everyone can join in.” The winter workshop, which will be held at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, will be broken into two parts. The 9 a.m. to noon session will include an interactive session on seeds native to the Americas and the Three Sisters garden method. The second session, which will also take place on Feb. 23, will run from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature a lecture on the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and its influence on the distinctive cuisine associated with this ethnic group. Both sessions will be presented by William Woys Weaver, an internationally known food historian, who makes his home in Devon. He is the author of a number of cookbooks, including the award-winning “Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking.” According to Dirks, Weaver has donated seeds to the Landis
Valley heirloom seed program. She shared that Weaver became interested in seeds when he discovered that his grandfather, an avid gardener, had been working to preserve seeds from traditional plants. “(Weaver) committed to growing (the seeds) and keeping them growing,” said Dirks, who added that heirloom seeds must be grown to keep the species alive. “When you talk about seed preservation, it means growing them in the garden on a rotating basis,” she explained. The morning session of the upcoming workshop will be divided into three parts. Part one will explore the impact of Native American seeds. “It’s amazing how many have origins in South and Central America,” said Dirks. “(The seeds) migrated north with the Native American peoples.” The workshop will include time for round table discussion and a presentation on Three Sisters gardening, which focuses on growing corn, beans, and squash. Dirks said that the practice originated in South America. “(Three Sisters gardening) is a Native American term and a practice the early settlers would have learned from their Native American neighbors, and it still works,” she explained. During the afternoon workshop, Weaver will delve into the

Tree Decorating Contest Supports Nonprofits The Lancaster Barnstormers hosted Christmas Tree Lane at the baseball team’s home stadium on the weekends from Nov. 30 through Dec. 23, 2018. The event’s purpose was to aid community nonprofits that support vital and worthwhile causes. Ninety-five local businesses and families sponsored trees to raise funds to assist in the effort. Visitors were invited to vote on their favorite tree or charity by purchasing tickets to place in ballot boxes by each tree. The event raised $19,513, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the nonprofits represented. The Lancaster Barnstormers added $10,000 to this amount, bringing the total raised to nearly $30,000. The Humankind Foundation tree finished in first place, receiving 4,352 votes. The Humankind
Foundation also received an additional $5,000 from the Lancaster Barnstormers, for a total of $9,352. A Tail to Tell Puppy Mill Rescue received 2,265 votes, plus $3,000 from the Lancaster Barnstormers for a total of $5,265. Walking Forward
Together received 2,232 votes, plus $2,000 from the Lancaster Barnstormers, for a total of $4,232. Some of the other trees received more than 1,000 votes or more than 500 votes. Many trees received more than 100 votes.
Decorated trees were on display during the Christmas Tree Lane event at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ home stadium in 2018. Visitors were able to purchase tickets to vote for their favorite trees. Proceeds benefited the nonprofit organizations represented by the trees.

Group To Play Jazz And More Club 42 will welcome Mwenso and the Shakes to the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The show will be held in the Atrium. Mwenso and the Shakes is a troupe of global artists that plays jazz, global music, African and Afro-American music and more. The group borrows from the stylings of Fats Waller, Muddy Waters, James Brown and many other American musical legends. Originally from places such as South Africa, Madagascar, France, Jamaica, Greenwich Village and Hawaii, the group’s members all now reside in Harlem. Born in Sierra Leone, Mwenso immigrated to London at the age of 10. As a young boy, Mwenso was introduced to jazz and African-American music through his mother’s work and found himself in a unique position to watch performances by wellknown American jazz musicians, including saxophonist Benny Carter, bassist Ray Brown and drummers Elvin Jones and Billy
Higgins. By 15, he had met James Brown, who invited him on stage to sing, dance and play when the rhythm and blues great came to London. Mwenso began performing as a trombonist and singer at the age of 12 and shortly thereafter met Wynton Marsalis, who in 2012 brought him on as a curator and programming associate at Jazz at Lincoln Center where, for four years, he booked afterhours sets at Dizzy’s Club CocaCola. Since his residency, Mwenso has been primarily working with the Shakes. The event will offer intimate table seating and the option to purchase small plates to enjoy during the concert. To purchase tickets and for more information, readers may visit www.artsmu.com or call 717-871-7600. Tickets are also available in person at the Ware Center box office on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
