MS (And Fogarty) Run The US During the pandemic in 2020, Quarryville resident Jim Fogarty decided to get himself mentally and physically healthy. To achieve this goal, Jim started running in the mornings and soon discovered his passion and enjoyment for long distance running. One of his favorite local places to run is the Enola Low Grade Trail, which, according to Jim, is a wonderful asset to the area. After completing two half marathons, he wanted to challenge himself further, so he began searching for fundraising relays in which he could participate. While scrolling on Facebook, Jim stumbled across MS Run the US. Four years before Ashley Schneider, founder of MS Run the US, was born, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She completed a 3,288-mile solo run across America in 2010 to raise $500,000 for MS research, but only raised 10% of her initial goal. As a result, she decided to run across America again, but with more people. In 2013, MS Run the US launched an annual relay run in which 19 individuals each run six marathons in six days and fundraise at least $10,000. The money raised supports MS Run the US’ mission to raise awareness of the disease, aid research, and help those living with disability due to MS. Jim identified with Schneider, as his mother had also received an MS diagnosis. Witnessing the negative impact of MS on his mother’s quality of life for the past 20 years is what inspired Jim to sign up for MS Run the US. MS is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system. With MS, there are communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body, which can cause permanent damage to or deterioration of the nerves. There is no known cure, but certain treatments can help individuals manage their symptoms. In the case of Jim’s mother, Mary Beth Fogarty, she

experiences tiredness, fatigue, and mobility issues, and her body does not handle warm temperatures well. “I can’t imagine knowing there’s no cure for a disease you’ve been diagnosed with and that it will only get worse,” said Jim. “I want to help with the mental anguish and financial burden that comes with that.”
Between Sunday, July 31 and Friday, Aug. 5, Jim will run a total of 169 miles from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to Brookville. This means that he will run about 28 miles each day to complete segment 17 of the 19-segment relay, which spans from Santa Monica, Calif., to New York, N.Y. “My goal is twofold,” said Jim.

This meeting set a plan in motion and answered Nixon’s prayers. Similar to the after-school program for elementary students that takes place at Solid Rock’s facility, the Providence program will include a snack, a group game, and a Bible les-

WRESTLING Despite winning the last four bouts of the night, Solanco’s matmen suffered a 34-31 setback against visiting Warwick on a night they celebrated their seniors. After recognizing Connor Musser, Wade Adams, Weston Bare, Steven Williams and Robert Castagna, the Mules fell behind early against Warwick and never quite recovered. “Even though we were missing two starters out with injuries, I felt it was a winnable match,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “It just made it a little more difficult. Founded in 1844 in London, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), also known as the Y, serves the community by offering programs that are intended to help people build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies. By instilling Christian ideas in its programs, the YMCA strives to develop and practice the principles of faith, hope, love, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch opened in 2007. “We don’t like to really see ourselves as a ‘gym and swim,’” said executive director Rick Wagner. “We want to be a pillar of the community, so we like to offer community-based

It’s like a community inside of a building, which is really nice.” Due to COVID-19, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA was closed during part of 2020. Since reopening, the branch has welcomed back 80% of its members and wants that number to grow. Moving forward, Wagner said he wants to build community partnerships and be viewed as an organization on which the community can rely. merger of the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County. The two entities merged into a single YMCA association, now known as the YMCA of the Roses, on Dec. 1, 2021. The grand opening of Village Park on April 10, 2021 offered the branch a little boost, too. “I kind of think of it as free advertising because so many families pass by our building on their way to sports practices,” stated Wagner. The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA as some new events in the works. On Saturday, April 2, there will be a Splish-Splash Easter Egg Bash where participants will hunt for Easter eggs in the pool, and Healthy Kids Day will return on Saturday, April 30. More details on these events will come soon. “If you want to feel welcome, if you want no judgments, if you want that community aspect where you’re not just coming to a gym but you’re coming to a family, then come here,” noted Wagner. “The YMCA is here not just for membership but any type of community-based relationship or community-based need.” For more information about the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, visit www.rosesymca.org or call 717-464-4000.

For the past several years, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Foundation (LCCTF) has invested in curriculum enhancements, equipment, and technology to support the innovation and stateof-the-art needs of the faculty of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). This year, LCCTF announced the award of several Dr. Michael K. Curley Teacher Innovation Grants for faculty at the LCCTC. Through initiatives such as the Fly on the Run event, Educational Improvement Tax Credit program, and ExtraGive, the LCCTF is able to support the innovation of the faculty of the LCCTC. Five grants were awarded for a total of $68,100. The grants went to Scott Kriner in the Photography and Digital Imaging program at the Brownstown campus, $6,600; Corey Andrew and Jim Smith, Carpentry Technology, Mount Joy campus, $2,000; Thomas Goehrig, CDL Training, Mount Joy campus, $32,500; Douglas Long, Welding Technology, Mount Joy campus, $23,000; and Deb Dilworth, Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide, Willow Street campus, $4,000. David Baldacci was featured at the annual fundraiser for the public libraries in Lancaster County. The event had been postponed due to the pandemic since April 2020, but the event still attracted over 950 guests. At the event, Baldacci described his journey to literary success. He had just released his latest novel, “Mercy,” so the timing for the gathering was in sync with a book tour. The Council of Friends of Lancaster County’s Public Libraries, in partnership with Aaron’s Books in Lititz and the Library System of Lancaster County, attended the annual author event. Organizers reported that 17 public libraries and the Bookmobile will each receive $1,500 from the proceeds of the event, which is double previous amounts. Some of the libraries have already shared their plans for the money. At Columbia Public Library, the funds will be used to purchase books for the adult readers’ book clubs and the Classics Club. Meredith Hendricks, interim Bookmobile coordinator, plans to communicate with the member libraries to assess their
