New Book Aims To Help Teachers Discuss Diversity
BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. One of my sisters later asked me who the person was who escorted her down the aisle. That excitement continued on

Todd Mealy, who is white, was 12 years old and grooving to the music at a football game with his black friends when an older white man approached him and spoke derogatorily of Mealy’s involvement with them. The encounter upset Mealy, robbing the event of its joy. Other incidents would upset the joy of racial diversity in Mealy’s life. At age 6, Mealy moved with his family to Harrisburg from Bradford See New Book pg 2

A Newspaper Lady’s Farewell my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled.

he creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out,
and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-byone by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects.

Current clients are located in New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Missouri. The institute also sponsors research, with an internship program for high school and college students who conduct research-based projects, and it is engaged in publishing. County, and as he matured, Mealy observed that his lived experiences were different than his black friends’. Additionally, his adopted sister, who is Korean, went through a racial identity crisis when she was about 18 years old. “It was a colorblind household,” Mealy said. “The idea was colorblindness should be enough. We know in hindsight that colorblindness (doesn’t go) far enough.” As a result, during his career as a social studies teacher most recently at Penn Manor High School - Mealy has positioned himself as an education critic and an equity advocate in schools even though some people have raised an eyebrow at his work. To help other teachers address issues related to race and diversity, Mealy published “Race Conscious Pedagogy: Disrupting Racism at Majority White Schools” in November 2020. He also founded the Equity Institute for Race Conscious Pedagogy, which launched in early 2020. Additionally, Mealy resigned from coaching high school football after the 2019 season so he could focus on race consciousness work. Mealy noted that academic classes that explore issues of race may increase attendance, improve grades, and keep students engaged. By teaching empathy and critical thinking, which students could immediately apply to their relationships with their peers, he shared that such classes can make a positive impact on schools and communities. The vision for the Equity Institute is to aid clients in creating race-conscious environments, which can include schools, corporations, and

To treat, beat and prevent heart disease and stroke, women should understand their family health history and know their five key personal health numbers, which help determine risk for heart disease and stroke. These numbers are total
cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Additionally, women should make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure.
Women should know the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. Heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women than in men. For more information, visit www.goredforwomen.org.

first quarter lead. Solanco, determined, won the second frame 129, and cut the lead to 27-20 at the break. But the visitors closed the game with a 32-16 run that included holding the hosts to five fourth quarter points. Burger continues to fuel the Mule offense, netting 10 of his 13 points in the second quarter. Maggs chipped in with seven points. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With Jade Eshleman (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Nikki Trout (13 points) each knocking down season-high point totals, Solanco captured its first win of the season last Monday, Jan. 25, holding off winless Garden Spot. “It was long overdue,” said head coach Chad McDowell of the win. “We have played some tough games this season. We are battle tested every night.” The hosts opened with a 9-0 run but found the game tied at 23-23 at the half. Spot opened the second half with the first bucket and its first lead, and last, of the game. Solanco ran off 23 second half points and held the visitors to nine, including a single field goal in the fourth quarter. “Taylor Shoener took over the second quarter in the post,” recalled McDowell. “We needed halftime to make an adjustment on her. Jade did a great job in the second half defensively, limiting Shoener and keeping her off the boards. “Our unselfish play was also a key to the win,” he continued. “We had assists on 13 of our 18 made baskets. We made the extra pass to get the easy shot. “I also thought Olivia Lasko was a spark off the bench and did the job as our sixth man. She picked up five points but more importantly had seven rebounds.” Trout and Eshleman combined for 11 of the team’s 13 points down the stretch. Arianna Seiberlich chipped in with seven and Olivia Lasko and Paige Phillips combined for nine. On the road Thursday, January 21, the girls’ basketball team got off to a solid start against Manheim Central. The visitors outscored the hosts in each of the first three quarters, pushing a 20-16 halftime advantage to 25-18 with one quarter left to play. The Barons, who lean heavily on sophomore Maddie Knier (25 ppg average), picked it up a notch down the stretch, ending the game on a 14-2 run and handing Solanco its fifth straight loss. Knier, who faced a box-and-one and was held to 11 points, got loose for six in the final frame. “Knier was the focus on our scouting report,” stated McDowell. “Nikki Trout and Kendal Janssen did an outstanding job defending her. They also had a
lot of help on some double teams from the other girls that were in the box.” Manheim took its first lead of the game, 26-25, with 2:30 left to play. Jade Eshleman answered with a bucket in the paint but the Barons ran off six straight points, including four free throws, to finish on top. “I thought we were in good shape after three quarters,” said McDowell. “Manheim picked up its pressure and we lost our composure. And when we were forced to foul, they made their free throws.
“We were just 1-for-6 in that quarter,” he added. “We missed a few layups that could have changed the momentum back to our favor. We just did not execute very well down the stretch. We need to do a better job with end of game situations.” Eshleman controlled the boards with 12 and was the top scorer with nine points. Phillips finished with six points and was scrappy on defense with five steals. Sammi Jackson (4 rebounds), Trout and Seiberlich each added four points.

Emma Zdrojewski, a Solanco High School sophomore, recently qualified for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 South Honor Band for 2021. She earned fourth chair out of 41 auditioning flutes. Students recorded themselves performing the assigned audition repertoire and submitted their recordings for judging. Participants were ranked and received feedback. Although there will not be
an in-person festival due to COVID-19, Emma now has the opportunity to prepare more music in order to re-audition for a place in the PMEA Region 5 Honor Band. Region 5 consists of 15 counties. Placement in the Region 5 Honor Band would then lead to an opportunity for Emma to audition for All-State Band. In addition to Emma, junior Juliana Weiss, a clarinetist, and junior Martin Stoner, a tuba player, also participated in the audition process.

Bling! from pg 1 The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blingedout shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest
problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said.
