Neighboring Volunteers Sought To Help Fight Homelessness By Ann Mead Ash

In August of 2019, Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties and Good Samaritan Services parted ways. Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became

the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training neighboring volunteers from local churches and matching

them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to See Bridge Of Hope pg 2

Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when neighboring volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not

Equestrians with caring hearts and calm, steady mounts make up the Middle Creek Search & Rescue (MIDSAR) horse team. MIDSAR is 100% volunteer-run and was started in 1994 by Randy Mower and Mike Musser; the horse team formed the following year. The organization covers southcentral Pennsylvania, including Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Dauphin, Schuylkill, Berks, and Chester counties. The team has also been called to Adams County. Currently, 10 people and their horses are part of the mounted team. “We can cover ground faster (than on foot), and, with the horses, we have a height advantage,” explained team captain Scott Arndt of Reading. Horses are a valuable part of the search process because they can take people to areas inaccessible to motorized vehicles. They move through the woods quietly, allowing riders to hear responses

to their calls of a subject’s name. The animals also have keen senses of smell and hearing, and while those senses are used for selfpreservation, riders who are in tune with their horses will recognize signals in body language that something is not right in their surroundings, possibly indicating the presence of another person. Most of the searches are conducted at night, so the excellent night vision of horses allows their riders to concentrate on looking for their subjects. Licensed teachers train team members on performing grid searches and reading maps and a compass. Training is also provided on managing searches and behaving properly at crime scenes. Typically, though, the group is called out to find people who have wandered away from safety, including those with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or autism; elderly individuals; and those who are despondent. When individuals are found alive, the team responds with first aid or CPR as needed. Janet Citron of Reading joined the team in 2010. As a professional equestrian - she gives lessons, trains horses, and runs a boarding

work slowly in a controlled fashion, which means they should be able to walk a grid line, often in tall grass fields. They must get along with other horses and work well at night while their riders wield flashlights. The animals should also be able to navigate heavily wooded areas, stand in brush or woods while clues are checked, cross bridges and handle traffic, and be willing to stand patiently while their riders are clearing trails. Other qualities of a good search horse are trust in its rider, ability to follow directions, willingness to separate from a group to work in pairs, and capability to handle rough terrain. Horses should also not be inclined to spook easily. Team leaders will do a ride with interested individuals to get a sense of who they are and how their horses interact with other horses and dogs, which are also used on searches. For more information about the MIDSAR horse team, readers may call Arndt at 610-301-6820 or visit www.midsar.org.

stable - and the daughter of a firefighter, she views the horse team as a natural fit. “I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” she said. Citron has enjoyed the work. MIDSAR holds monthly meetings at the Durlach/Mt. Airy Fire Station, 880 Durlach Road, Stevens, and hosts training events throughout its coverage area. “There are different levels of training to go through,” Citron said. “You never know what kind of situation you’ll come across.” Many of the horse team members are licensed amateur radio operators. Ham radios allow team members to communicate with each other and with other rescue personnel in areas where cellular service is unavailable. Citron got her license specifically for her work with MIDSAR, as did Arndt. The horse team welcomes new members. Applicants must have clear background checks and their own mounts and transportation. Membership is restricted to adults, and members currently range in age from 30 to 72. “Retirees help a lot (because they don’t have work commitments),” said team member Jack Burns of Schuylkill County. “You never know when a call’s coming in.” Search horses must be able to

Hoop Team Battles Eastern, Warwick in Finales by Mona Steinhauer

Hosting the top team in Section Two last Tuesday, February 4, was a tall task for a team that starts just one senior. But the Mules went at the 11-2 Warriors in search of an upset. The Warriors, however, with three senior starters and a bench of depth prevailed, 71-46. “They’re a very good team,” said head coach David Long. “They have more size than we do and they’re quicker. I felt like we got the shots we needed but they just didn’t fall. Sometimes we made it more difficult than it needed to be. And Warwick definitely controlled the boards.” Both teams traded threes to open the game with Ryan Smith answering Chase Yarberough but the Warriors went on to drain four

more treys while the Mules hit just two and fell behind 23-13 at the end of one. Solanco could not buy a bucket to start the second quarter, giving up six straight points before securing their first points of the frame, a pair of free throws by Colesen Sheaffer with 4:53 left in the half. The Mules rallied after that, outscoring the visitors 10-7 and cutting the lead to 36-23 at the break. Despite opening the third quarter with a traditional three point play by Zed Baker that closed the gap to ten, 36-26, the Mules were outscored 21-6 and looking at a 28 point deficit with one quarter left. “A lack of consistency has been our problem all season,” Long pointed out. “We can’t be our own worst enemy.” Warwick’s Conor Adams collected

a game-high 19 points in those first three quarters and took a break in the fourth as the visitors went deep into their bench. Solanco kept working and, behind Baker’s seven points, outscored the Warriors 1714 down the stretch. Baker, who led the team in scoring this year with just under nine points per game, was the top scorer for the Mules with 12 points. Freshman Tyler Burger followed with ten, including a 3-for-3 effort at the line where the hosts finished 10-for-16 as a team. The Warriors were 9-for-20. Jalen Henry and Colesen Sheaffer, who battled foul trouble, both tossed in nine points while Smith settled for six on a pair of threes. Five different players knocked down threes for the Mules while the Warriors had five different players hit two each and two others hit one for a 12-6 advantage from downtown. “We lose three seniors, and one of them was injured most of the year,” Long said. “So we’ll have a good group back and we have some freshmen coming up that put together a winning season. We’ll just keep working in the off-season to get better.” The boys’ were coming off a 6442 non-league loss to Eastern on Saturday, February 1. The Mules were outscored in all four quarters but it was the middle two frames that led to their downfall. Eastern jumped out to a 16-10 first quarter lead but then poured in 20 second quarter points to push out to a 36-21 lead at the break. Solanco managed just eight third quarter points before going toe-totoe with the Golden Knights in the fourth. The hosts held a slim 14-13 edge but it was enough to pick up

the win. Eastern’s Isaiah Saahir dropped in a game-high 17 points but Henry was just one point away with 16 points. Burger nailed three triples and finished with 10 points, and Baker added nine, including 3-for-4 from the foul line. Shaffer (3), Smith (3) and Luke Brown (1) rounded out the scoring. WRESTLING In non-league action Thursday, February 6, and in tune-up for the post-season, the matmen hosted Donegal, the third place team out of Section Two. Solanco earned six wins to Donegal’s five and secured five falls, including Jared Fulton’s match clincher, and one major decision to pull out a 37-30 victory. Jackson Houghton got the action rolling with a 3:06 fall over Wendell Jonas at 126. After Joey Vandegriff’s 14-4 major decision at 132, Solanco picked up its second fall of the night when Ronald Fulton decked Ian Brown in 39 seconds, the fastest bout of the night. Steven Williams (145) followed with a 7-5 decision and Solanco was off to 19-0 start. The Indians, however, quickly turned things around, winning the next six bouts, including falls at 160, 182, 195 and 220 to stake a 30-19 advantage with four bouts left. After a double forfeit at 285, Dominic Flatt (106) pinned Gage Sauder in 2:27, cutting the lead to 30-25. Weston Bare’s 3:29 fall over Jansen Flohr at 113 put Solanco back in front, 31-30 and leaving the outcome to Jared Fulton. The 120pounder made quick work of Christopher Latchford, recording the matchclinching fall in just 56 seconds. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL After claiming their second

straight Section Three crown with a win over Manheim Central, Solanco earned a non-league win over Daniel Boone on Saturday, February 1, and pushed their winning streak to six. The Mares used a balanced attack, with 11 players combining for 51 points, and a stingy defense, holding the hosts to 19 points, including six in the second half, as they improved to 13-8 overall. The visitors had their best scoring output in the first quarter, jumping out to an 18-7 advantage. They led 25-13 at the half and then buckled down on the defensive end, giving up just three points in each quarter while pouring in 26 points to finish on top. The 19 points is the fewest points the Mares have given up this season. DB finished with just one two-point shot on the day but matched Solanco in threes with five. The Mares also cashed in on 10-of-20 free throws. “Our game plan was to make them shoot from the perimeter so we went with a flat 3-2 zone,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “I was a little surprised that they made as many threes as they did. “As for our foul shooting…their gym provided some depth perception issues that took a little getting used to.” Jenna Dombach led the way with 11 points and three trifectas while Jade Eshleman continued to anchor the defense, hauling in eight rebounds while putting up six points. Paige Phillips chipped in with nine points, two rebounds and two steals.

“This was a good opportunity to get everyone into the game,” said McDowell. “Some of our JV players gained some varsity experience. We got the result we expected.” Piper Graham came off the bench with five points with Hannah Wood (4 rebounds), Angela Cylc (3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Sammi Jackson (5 rebounds) each scoring four points. Nikki Trout sparked the defense with a team-high seven steals to go along with two points and three assists. Alana Yoder (2 points, 2 steals), Ilynd Rapant (1 point, 3 rebounds), Arianna Seiberlich(5 rebounds, 3 assists), Olivia Laski(3 rebounds) and Meg Bailey (3 rebounds) also contributed. In non-league action Tuesday, February 4, in Lititz, the Mares dropped a tough one, 28-24 to Section Two runner-up Warwick. This was a defensive battle throughout with only one team, Solanco, hitting double figures, and that was 10 points in the fourth quarter. Warwick got out to an early lead, taking the first quarter 7-5 and the second one 9-6 for a 16-11 advantage at the break. “That was the largest lead of the night,” said McDowell. “It was a very competitive game. We went with a box-and-one on their leading scorer, Lauren Pyle (15 ppg avg). Nikki did an outstanding job, holding her to just five points for the game. “Warwick played a sagging manto-man and we struggled to get any kind of dribble penetration,” he continued. “I don’t think either team

really got into an offensive flow.” Scoring was all but absent in the third quarter. Both teams knocked down just three points, a field goal and a free throw. “We played from behind the whole second half and over the final few minutes we started fouling to extend the game,” said McDowell. “At one point we did get the lead down to two but Warwick converted on some free throws to stay in front.”

Warwick connected on five-ofeight attempts for the game and were four-for-six in the fourth. The Mares were an uncharacteristic four-for-12 and did not hit a single three point shot. “We definitely struggled at the foul line which has not been typical of our team,” said McDowell. “And this was the first game this season we did not hit a three. It just shows what a strange shooting night we had.”

Despite hounding Pyle all night, Trout led the scoring with seven points, including all six of Solanco’s second quarter points. Eshleman and Rapant controlled the glass with 11 and six rebounds respectively. They each finished with six points and two steals. Yoder (2 points, 3 rebounds), Seiberlich (2 points) and Dombach (1 point, 4 assists) also contributed. In JV action, Seiberlich tossed in seven points, Meg Bailey added six and Hannah Wood and Kendal Janssen each scored five in Solanco’s 27-13 victory. The squad completed its season with a 17-3 record.

The members of Red Rose Quilters Guild held a work session on Jan. 14 in the banquet room of the Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. Groups of quilting enthusiasts gathered around more than a dozen tables, each working on one of the many steps required to assemble small comfort quilts. “They all look different because I cut the fabric and create kits,” said project coordinator Jeanne Riley. “(The members) sign out (the kits) like library books (and take them home to sew). I like to design the quilt tops. There are a lot of members who don’t want to design; they just like to sew.” Over the course of the year, the guild’s approximately 140 members produce about 250 throw-, crib-, and lap-size quilts.

Red Rose Quilters Guild members worked together to complete comfort quilts destined for donation to local assistance organizations. New members are welcome to join the group, which meets twice a month in Landisville. “We are constantly getting completed quilts throughout the year,” Riley remarked. “Most people will make one, but then we have the prolific (members),” added past president Jennifer Funck. The guild meets at Four Seasons for a business meeting and program from 6 to 8 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. Often, the program speaker offers a workshop on Wednesday or Saturday that week. On the fourth Tuesday of the month, the guild hosts studio from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at Four Seasons, and members may work on their own projects or finish the comfort quilts. “We’re one of the few quilt guilds that has our own stash,” Riley said, gesturing to several shelves filled with neatly organized pieces of printed cotton cloth, thread in a variety of sizes, batting, notions, and more. Attendees provide their own sewing machines, scissors and specialty shears, and any tools they like to use when sewing. During the work session on Jan. 14, several people stacked a quilt top, backing, and batting, then pinned the three layers together with right sides together. At another station, the layers were sewn together, leaving a small opening. Next, the quilt was turned right side out, and the corners were finger-pressed into sharp angles. “When your fingernails get tired, you whip out your credit card,” Riley said, explaining the common makeshift tool. The quilt then visited another sewing machine, where a row of stitches was sewn around the

outer edge, creating a false binding. Finally, the quilt was finished with heavy thread that tied the three layers together with knots or crowfoot stitches. About 50 quilts were slated to go through that process on Jan. 14. Funck related that periodically, the guild hosts a potluck and invites representatives of local organizations to attend. After hearing a short introduction of each agency, the guild then presents the guests with bags of quilts. The comfort quilts have typically been donated to homeless shelters, hospice agencies, domestic violence organizations, and groups that assist recovering addicts. Occasionally, quilts have been sent to other states or countries in response to flooding, fires, or other natural disasters. “They’re made with love,” guild member Donna Lucidi remarked. “We don’t expect them to be perfect. It’s (an opportunity for) learning and using your talents.” “We have a wide range of skills and knowledge (among our members),” Funck agreed. Guild members hail from Lancaster and surrounding counties. Anyone with an interest in quilting is welcome to attend guild events for a fee. New members may join at any time for a fee as well. Additionally, the guild accepts donations of 100% cotton fabric suitable for quilting, and anyone who would like to learn more about donating may contact Riley at Jeanne.riley1@gmail.com. For more information about the guild, readers may visit https://sites.google.com/view /redrosequiltersguild.

Guy McIntosh

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) board of directors has announced the appointment of Guy McIntosh as its new general manager. McIntosh will work closely with LSO musicians and staff and the board of directors to continue the orchestra’s goals of artistic excellence, community engagement, and educational outreach. He began in the position on Jan. 2. In addition to working as an administrator for numerous performing arts organizations, McIntosh is a professional musician and has been a member of the LSO trumpet section since 2010. McIntosh comes to the LSO from the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (MSO). While at the MSO he oversaw a successful digital transformation, updated marketing campaigns, and a strong focus on public relations.
