Solanco

Director John Biles said he chose “Godspell” to be Solanco High School’s spring musical as a tribute to his students and the community.
“‘Godspell’ has never been done here to my knowledge, and we have an upperclassman group that is very experienced, and their identity is extremely faith-based,” said Biles, who is a Solanco High School English teacher. “It’s partially because I wanted to honor them. The community down here has a very strong faith-based tradition, and
I wanted to honor that. The idea was to find something that is appropriate for a public school, but also something a lot of these students can express themselves in that way on stage. ... ‘Godspell’ is one of the best, especially for high schools.”
Biles said “Godspell” follows a rabble of wayward and lost young people, who, with the help of Jesus Christ, tell different parables and the last days of His life by using a variety of storytelling techniques and song styles ranging from pop/rock to vaudeville. He added that “Godspell” explores the journey of these lost
young people as they learn to build a new community based on messages of kindness and love.
“‘Godspell’ is kind of like imagining a youth group putting on the story of the Gospel from the Bible,” said senior Ben Worrell, who plays John/Judas. “It’s really cool. Imagine Jesus comes to your youth group and says, ‘We’re going to act out a bunch of different parables leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus in the Gospel.’ It’s a really fun time.”
Biles noted the movie, which comes from the 1970s, misinterpreted the original intent of the

It’s a place where kids can come be kids.
Black Rock Christian Camp & Retreat Center, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, is constantly coming up with ways of providing life-changing experiences to children during their most formative years.
Executive director Peter Fiorello said Black Rock serves 25,000 people a year. The focus remains local children.
“Kids are our passion. That’s how Black Rock was started 70 years ago,” Fiorello said. “Every summer, we have kids from all over the greater Lancaster area come to summer camp. We have kids from other states, but most come from a two- or three-hour radius. Throughout the year we also run outdoor education programs where schools come on the property from either one-day programs to three-day
programs. We serve 3,000-plus kids from schools in the region.” Kids participate in classes, creek studies, ziplines, and ropes courses. “Everything we do here, we integrate biblical truths and talk about Jesus,” said Fiorello. Black Rock also hosts church groups and retreats for youths, adults, and families. A golf event and bike event raise money to send kids to camp. Olympic

That’s why Pam and her hus band, Greg, are co-chairs of the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s annual gala.
Schreiber’s 41st annual gala is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lan caster. The theme is “Havana
Local organizations purchase sponsorships, which is a main source of revenue. Schreiber’s Hero sponsors are Faulkner, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Highmark/ PennState Health, and Miter Foundation. There will be silent and live auction items, including a seven-day trip to Africa. A DJ will supply music.
The inaugural Philanthropist Award will be presented
to Dr. Samuel and Dena Lombardo, huge financial supporters of Schreiber for many years and key supporters of a recent expansion.
A highlight of the gala is the unveiling of the yearly Schreiber Ambassadors, who share their stories of perseverance.
Visit https://schreiber pediatric.org for more information or to purchase tickets to the gala. Tickets may be purchased until Friday, Feb. 14, or until they are sold out. Donations may be made up to March 10.
Pam and Greg, the latter of whom has been a board member for eight years, are in their third year as gala co-chairs. Their older son, Alex, went to Schreiber for 18 years.
“That’s one of the reasons we’re involved,” Pam said.
Alex graduated from Temple University. Now 30 years old, he works as an architect. “Alex has physical disabilities,
so Schreiber was who we went to for speech, physical and occupational therapy, and that’s what helped him to be able to go to college and be independent,” said Pam.
“That’s why my husband and I have an affiliation with them, to give back to an organization that gave to us for so many years.”
The Oleksas feel companionship with other families that have the same need. “That’s now our goal as parents, to give back to other families, so they, too, can have the same opportunities with their child to be an inde -

pendent person in the community, living independently,” Pam said.
The entire family is involved. All three children are Hempfield High School graduates. The Oleksas’ daughter, Ashley, a teacher who was inspired by Alex’s journey, is on the gala committee. The younger son, Nick, lives in Dallas but is returning home to attend the gala.
“It’s our family mission to support this wonderful organization,” Pam said. “And we have a ton of friends who support us in this mission, some on the board and committee.”
The gala is a major fundraiser for Schreiber. “The reason that we do the gala every year is we’re trying to make up for the $2.5 million deficit for services that are provided to the 2,000 children who receive services every year,” Pam said. “Our goal is to provide services to as many children as possible, even if they don’t have any ability to pay, their parents don’t have the ability to pay. We still want to provide care to those children.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, provides occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, day care, infant care, and preschool for children with developmental disabilities, developmental delays, or acquired injuries.
Pam says the committee is hoping to have 400 individuals attend the event.
“Our gala has continued to grow,” said Pam. “We were at a smaller venue two years ago. Last year, we were at the Imperial for our 40th. We needed to find a larger venue. It’s just been very positive, the growth.”
Pam also credits the Schreiber fund development team consisting of Danielle Sunday and Kristen Masengard. “There is a team of committee members who play a huge role in gathering sponsorships, silent auction items, and live auction items, which are the things that make our event a success,” Pam said. “The big thing is we’re so fortunate our local community supports the needs of the local children. Every year, it’s heartwarming for me to see that outpouring of support.”

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has announced a new feature of its relationship with Drexel University. Graduates of Thaddeus Stevens College are eligible for the Drexel Promise, which provides students who have earned an associate degree with a renewable scholarship for 50% decreased tuition as they pursue a bachelor’s degree at Drexel.
Some graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College pursue additional higher education within five years of graduating, and the college maintains several articulation agreements with other institutions to facilitate smooth transitions into additional learning opportunities. The college’s articulation agreement with Drexel was first announced in 2021 and seeks to enable students with an associate degree in computer and network systems administration or business administration to seamlessly pursue a related program at Drexel.
The Drexel Promise tuition discount is available to graduates holding two-year degrees from an accredited community
Circle Legacy Center will hold a Second Friday program on Feb. 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees are asked to use the Concord Street entrance.
The event will be the annual Sweetheart Dance celebrating Valentine’s Day. Native American musician Barry Lee will be highlighted in a program of Native American music and dancing. Attendees are asked to bring a food item to share if they are able; they should also bring their own place settings.
college. With this program, Drexel works to reduce financial barriers and their resulting inequities for students. First offered to students in specific regions, the program was recently expanded to apply to students nationwide. Those receiving the discount can still receive other state or federal funding assistance. Applicants to a full-time, on-campus program should indicate their associate degree; no additional forms or applications are required. Criteria for admission at Drexel must be met. Full-time enrollment and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be maintained to receive the discount.
creator, Stephen Schwartz. “Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for this, acknowledges the movie, which has Jesus as a clown and all the hippies, was a wrong interpretation,” said Biles. “It just happened to be that was the culture back then. So it’s a show we can take in any time and place. We decided ours is really no (specific) time and place. The cast aren’t dressed as hippies. They’re colorful. Jesus is not a clown. He is energetic. He’s a teacher just like you would find in the Bible, and it’s our interpretation of the show itself.”
Senior Quinn Wiley, who plays a disciple, said the play tests the cast. “I think the biggest challenge ‘Godspell’ has for the cast is definitely the physicality of the show,” she said. “We are dancing. We are acting. It’s mentally challenging in a good, creative way for all of us. The physicality is what makes it difficult, but it’s what makes this show so beautiful and so unique.”
Senior Isaac West, who plays Jesus, promises a riveting production. “I think people will be wowed by the vocal talent in this musical,” Isaac said. “As a
school, as a cast, we really stepped it up. This is a very difficult show, vocally and musically. I think people will be wowed by the music and also by the sheer energy that’s going to be present on stage throughout the whole time. Everybody is on the stage for the entire musical, and it’s a really fun dynamic of Jesus being the MC (master of ceremonies) of sorts. There’s a lot of humor. The goodness of Jesus’ parables is present. Overall, it’s going to be a great mix of emotional impact and having a really fun time.”
More than 100 students are involved in this production in roles such as actors, crew, set painters, set builders, and ushers. In addition to Isaac, Ben, and Quinn, main cast members include seniors Emma Reinhardt, Annie Sheaffer, and Reese Zander; juniors Aiden Elliott, Jasel Garcia, Michaela Meyrick, and Sophie Pizzulli; and sophomores Cooper Fuller, Michelle Phillips, and Grace West. Featured singers are senior Addison Beiler, juniors Kenton Green and Kate Zdrojewski, and sophomore Reed Morehouse. The student stage managers are Tai Kauffman and

“A place like camp is really important for today’s childhoods,” Fiorello said. “Even as adults, we need time to pause and get away and reflect on life and our relationship with God.”
Studies show that children’s worldviews are largely formed by the age of 13, and the choices they make during this time can have a lasting impact on their spiritual journey.
According to Barna Group, nearly 80% of people who follow Christ began doing so before the age of 18. This makes the time spent at a Christian summer camp crucial for shaping the spiritual lives of young people, as these camps offer an immersive environment for children to explore and deepen their faith away
from the distractions of daily life.
Summer camps, eight weeks of day camp and overnight camp, run from mid-June to early August.
Black Rock is continuing to expand its summer sports camps and has added leadership programs called Surge and Surge Launch.
“What we’ve learned is there’s really not a lot of opportunity for kids ages 12 to 14 to develop leadership skills,” Fiorello said.
“So we provide that opportunity at camp. We invest in them, and then they help teach kids to help develop those skills.”
Surge is a two-week discipleship initiative for ninth-graders and older. “They come, they do fun activities like canoeing and hiking, and they serve,” Fiorello said.
For more information
about Black Rock and its camp offerings, visit www .blackrockretreat.com.
Fiorello said Black Rock’s “rich tradition and history” make it a worthwhile camp experience. “Kids have been coming here for 70-plus years, which is really pretty cool,” he said. “We have counselors who are authentic and care for the campers. We have counselors from all over the world, which is a really awesome experience, from Madagascar to South America, New Zealand, and England. This is a place where kids can come be kids. A place where they’re not connected to technology. They’re able to get out in nature and hear God speak. It’s just a special time for kids to get away. The food is great. The activities are great. That’s all the bonus stuff. Kids get to play, which is so import-
ant to them.”
Campers and their parents have left rave reviews: “It really helps you to go back to God, and it’s a whole different world without technology,” one camper said. “It’s also really fun, and you bond with other Christian friends.”
One parent said, “When you go pick up your child and his face has a smile ear to ear and he says, ‘This year was even better than last!’ you know as a parent, God is present.”
Black Rock is not content to rest. “Black Rock is continuing to grow and expand,” said Fiorello. “We’re excited about our summer programs. We’re going to continue to be creative and grow those programs in the future, providing more opportunities for more kids to come to camp.”

“Most people don’t understand taxes,” said Cliff Mast, site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Paradise location at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East. “We as a group (of volunteers) work on de-mystifying them or just being a calming presence.”
Mast explained that many clients who come to VITA for free tax preparation services feel a lot of anxiety about completing their taxes. “Our goal is to say, ‘It’s alright. We will take care of this. We will help walk you through it.’”
Mast, who has been a volunteer with VITA for nearly a decade, said that the Paradise site, which opened at the end of January, will be staffed with volunteer tax preparers each Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Thursday, April 10. The Paradise location is one of 15 sites located throughout the county. Free tax preparation through VITA is available at two sites in Elizabethtown, as well as sites in Columbia, Denver, Ephrata, New Holland, Hempfield, Manheim, Millersville, and Quarryville. Lancaster sites are located at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St.; the United Way offices; and 245 W. King St. More information about hours or making an appointment, which is recommended, is available at www.uwlanc.org/vita.
Individuals may also schedule by dialing 211. Pop-up sites may be available as well. In Lancaster County, VITA services are provided through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the United Way.
“(VITA services) are available to anyone with a household income under $70,000,” said Mast, who explained that further parameters exclude taxes for rental properties and S corporations. “We don’t do business returns,” he said, but then added that Schedule C taxes for a side business would fall within VITA’s wheelhouse. VITA will complete federal, state, and local tax forms as well as the PA-1000 form for those who qualify. “That
is an extra rebate up to $1,000,” he said. According to Mast, the service starts with an intake form, which can be filled out online or may be sent ahead of the appointment by email. “We have everyone fill out an intake name, address, who is in the house, W-2, 1099, retirement income, etc.,” he explained.
“That helps us to interview and be sure we have all the correct information.” Mast explained that taxes are done in person during a session that generally lasts less than an hour. “We enter information into software, and (documentation) goes back to (the client),” he said.
All VITA tax preparers are volunteers who are trained by the IRS to complete basic returns and are tested yearly. Mast recently received his enrolled agent certification, which he noted is the highest certification that the IRS bestows on a tax preparer. “It means
I have learned about personal tax and business tax returns and representing people in front of the IRS,” he stated. “I got a lot of training this last year to earn that.” Mast recently opened Masterpiece Tax in Leola.
Mast said that in 2024, volunteers at the Paradise site completed 400 returns. “That’s a huge amount of volunteer time,” said Ellie Green, communications director with The Factory. “That’s at least 400 hours, not to mention the time spent to get the certifications,” she said. “It’s an incredible gift to the community.” Readers who would like to volunteer with VITA may visit the aforementioned website and click on the “Volunteer” tab.
More information about the VITA location at The Factory may be found by searching for “The Factory Community Board” on Facebook.

The Lancaster Area Sewing Network is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from people who have not sewed much before to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fitting and construction skills related primarily to garment sewing, although occasionally embroidery, quilting, or bag-making are shown by members. The group meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months. During winter months, the meetings are conducted via Zoom. During the rest of the year, in-person programs are held at the Lancaster Friends Meetinghouse, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. A yearly overnight retreat, a one-day retreat, service projects, and a fabric swap are optional activities. For more details, contact the membership chair at the aforementioned email address.
