Students get into character for spring musical

S

olanco High School will present its 2024 spring production, “Guys and Dolls,” on Thursday, Feb. 29; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m. The show will be held in the school’s auditorium, located at 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door, and they may be purchased in advance online at www.ShowTix4u.com /event-details/79876. Set in the lively sprawl of mid20th century New York City, “Guys and Dolls” is an American musical that follows the story of two couples. Sky Masterson, a smooth-talking gambler, is in an improbable relationship with a devout missionary named Sarah Brown. Endearing slacker Nathan Detroit has been engaged to his bubbly fiancée, Miss Adelaide, for several years. As the story unravels via grand musical numbers and classic show tunes, the characters learn more about themselves, each other and

where they fit among the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. Since rehearsals began in December, the cast members of “Guys and Dolls” have been working hard to prepare for showtime under the guidance of director John Biles, who teaches English language arts at Solanco High School. In addition to memorizing their lines and musical numbers, many cast members have made an effort to truly understand the unique personalities they will bring to life on the stage. “Nathan is the guy who pulls everything together. He’s stressed, pulling all the strings, but he makes it work,” said sophomore Kenton Green, who will play Nathan Detroit. “I identify with the part of him that’s a busybody, so I’ve been able to fall into the character naturally.” Green added that he has been using vocal exercises to achieve a high-pitched and whiny tone for his character. Due to the main characters’ unique personalities, the cast members have faced different challenges as they rehearse.

Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Donald Kautz will present “The Mills Are Alive.” Lancaster County’s mills were once impor tant contributors to the local economy. The local mill was where people went to get their mail and catch up on the local news while delivering their corn or wheat to be processed into animal feed, cornmeal, or flour. Today, most of the mills are gone, but about 100 still stand. Two of them are now museums while others have been converted into residences or businesses and some have been abandoned. The presentation will begin with a brief history of milling and water-powered mill technology. Kautz will also share stories from a few of Lancaster County’s

words for bank accounts and social media profiles. If you receive an urgent request that claims to need your information to settle a serious matter, be sure to check the sender’s email address and look for grammatical mistakes and punctuation errors. Many scammers try to emulate a legitimate source by using an email address that is nearly identical to one used by a real business or individual. The partnership between the Quarryville Library and Millersville University is funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. The grant funding currently supports the program until the end of Februar y; Condon will continue to offer his services until Thursday, Feb. 29. In addition to providing tips to avoid online scams, Condon assists visitors with deleting files, operating a smartphone and printing images with a computer. “Embracing social media and technology has the potential t o o p e n n e w d o o r s ,” Condon said. “If someone is isolated socially, they can use messaging apps to stay connected with friends. The fear of scams and viruses makes a lot of people reluctant to use a tool that can be very helpful.” Although the grant has not been extended past February, the Quarryville Library will continue to assist its patrons who have questions about their computers. “(The grant) has been a fantastic resource that extends our mission,” said Sharon Roche, Quarryville Library’s program manager. “We’re always here to help, but having DJ here on demand has been a great benefit to the community.”

GriefShare group sets meetings

Girls on the Run from pg 1 end of the season. The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Franklin & Marshall College, 637 College Ave., Lancaster. “‘Run’ is in the name, but the program is really about helping to lift up and empower girls,” said Jennifer West, executive director of GOTR Lancaster. “You can run, hop, roll, walk or push through our lessons and the 5K.” This year, GOTR will introduce a new curriculum titled “Hello Superstar.” While the new material shares many of the same goals as GOTR’s previous lessons, it will place an additional focus on the importance of inclusion and celebrating diversity. As part of the curriculum, each team will collaborate on a project that will

positively impact the local community, and the girls will have an opportunity to choose where to direct the focus of the assignment. In the past, participants’ projects have supported animal rescues, teachers throughout their school district, local first responders and individuals who could use a care package. “The girls learn that it’s important to think of others while taking care of yourself, and it’s really neat to see teams choose a project meaningful to them,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “They are not only making a difference in somebody’s life, but also in the community at large.” GOTR Lancaster expects to have more than 1,200 girls and 90 teams participate in

the spring season, which will require a minimum of 400 volunteer coaches. Coaches are not required to be runners themselves, and students in high school are invited to sign up as volunteers. For more information, visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

Faith C hurch, 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Q uar r y ville, will host GriefShare on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The last regular session will take place on April 29, and a meal on May 6 will conclude the program.

GriefShare is for people who are grieving the death of a loved one. This group will meet in Room 214, which is accessible by elevator. At each meeting, attendees will view a video featuring counselors, pastors,

and health care professionals speaking on grief-related topics. There will also be small-group discussion, and a workbook will be provided. To reg ister, call the church office at 717-7867559 to speak with Jessie.

PAD trains dogs to make a difference BY JEFF FALK

Statistically, dogs are the most popular pet in America. Through the years, dogs have become humans’ best friends through a symbiotic relationship that revolves around service. No one has to tell Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania (PAD) about canine service and its importance. The local nonprofit has built its reputation by filling a need for assistance dogs. “I believe dogs have a powerful impact on society,” said PAD director and

The physical and emotional roles that dogs play in families’ lives are so important.” PA D, which re cent ly moved from 30 Copperfield Circle, Lititz, to 55 New St., Ephrata, trains and places assistance dogs with individuals with disabilities. PAD also instructs people on how to properly care for and work with assistance dogs through a mentorship program. “Assistance dogs have been trained to help an individual with a disability with a task,” said Zoccola. “They can perform on a cue. They can help guide a blind person, respond to a seizure, open a door, guide an individual to an exit or guide them to a car.” It typically takes 18 to 24 months to train an assistance dog. For the most part, PAD works with dogs 3 years old or younger and generally with dogs from the Labrador retriever, golden retriever and standard poodle breeds. “They are typically the breeds that are easiest to train,” said Zoccola. “They wa n t to b e fo l l o we rs . They’re accepted by the community, and they’re a fit size-wise for most clients. But each dog is different.” It costs anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000 to train an assistance dog, but PAD places its assistance dogs for about $2,500. That difference is made up through fundraising and donations from the community. “I love what we do, but it’s exhausting,” said Zoccola. “The pressure of fundraising is something I don’t think I understood when I first started. But I have realized that this is my calling and it’s work that needs to be done.” And the need is great. PAD currently has a waiting list of four years for its assistance dogs. “It’s a huge need. It’s astronomical,” said Zoccola. Currently, PAD is training 34 dogs. The nonprofit relies heavily on five volunteer puppy raisers to work with the canines.

“ T h e s e dogs make an impact on other peop l e ’s l i v e s ,” said Lindsay Edwards, PAD’s breeder coordinator. “Time is the most invaluable resource, and it can impact the community,” said Zoccola. “Our program has seen a drastic downfall of support - donations a n d v o l u n - PAD founder Linzey Zoccola has been teers - since training assistance dogs for more than 20 years. Heart health suggestions offered

Advertiser - Solanco Edition - February 14, 2024 - 5

Februar y is American Hear t Month, and the Lancaster County Office of Aging has posted tips for keeping one’s heart healthy. Heart disease can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity, and caring for one’s heart and cardiovascular function becomes increasingly important as one ages. Exercise remains one of the best ways to maintain and improve heart health. Before beginning an exercise routine, people should check with their doctor, who can help them develop a plan that fits their physical needs and health goals. Some easy routines include brisk walking, dancing, Zumba, stationary cycling, water aerobics and yoga. Maintain in g he al t hy c h o l e s te ro l a n d b l o o d pressure readings is also important for heart health. People should keep re g u l a r a p p o i n t m e n t s with their doctor, who can suggest healthy ways to lower cholesterol or blood pressure if they are too high. Social isolation can be a risk factor for heart disease. People are encouraged to explore their local community, and seniors may visit a local senior center or sign up for a Lancaster County Office of Aging wellness event. To view the Office of Aging’s wellness brochure, visit http://tinyurl.com/ O fficeofA g ingWellness Program. A list of Office of Aging senior centers is available at http://tinyurl .com/LancasterCountySen iorCenters. These resources may also be requested by calling the Office of Aging at 717-299-7979.
