Banquet Set To Support Cold Water Conservation Group By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The puns are practically unavoidable: Donegal Trout Unlimited (DTU) is fishing for support; DTU hopes to lure supporters to its annual banquet and auction; DTU members are hooked on cold water conservation. Puns or no puns, the work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “ We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects,” said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond.” DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout
Unlimited in the state. The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county. The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving. See Donegal Trout Unlimited pg 4
Masons Plan Spring Pie Sale
Donegal Trout Unlimited fundraising committee members, including (from left) Bob and Vickie Kutz, Barry Witmer, Ruth Roulston, Greg and Vicki Wilson, and (not pictured) Glen Nephin have planned the conservationfocused group’s annual banquet, which will be held on March 16 at the DoubleTree in Willow Street.
Special Guests Enjoy A Night To Shine By Francine Fulton
LUNCH AND LECTURE
Volunteers Paul Sirback (left) and Joe Weickel helped to make thousands of fruit pies last fall to benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster. Orders for the spring pie sale will be accepted through March 13, and pies will be ready for pickup on April 17. Local Masons will once again volunteer to bake 4,000 pies this year in support of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of
Lancaster. The spring and fall fruit pie sales generate approximately 40 percent of the center’s annual operating budget. See Spring Pie Sale pg 9
For the second consecutive year, people with special needs were invited to take part in the Night to Shine prom-style event hosted by Freedom Life Church at the Shady Maple Banquet Facility in East Earl. At the event on Feb. 8, there were 65 honored guests in attendance, along with approximately 85 parents and caregivers. Nearly 200 volunteers from Freedom Life Church and the surrounding community made the event possible through planning, organizing and volunteering throughout the evening. Each guest who attended the Night to Guests who entered the prom-like Shine prom-style event sponsored by event were greeted by church volun- Freedom Life Church on Feb. 8 was teers and were presented with a crowned king or queen by Noelle corsage or boutonniere. “A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants,” Kutz explained, adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. DTU maintains a nursery at the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects. “We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years,” Kutz said. “Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there. The others are blown out,” fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported. The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the chapter. Fundraising committee cochair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited. Exclusive of conservation projects, DTU’s yearly operating budget averages to $33,000. The budget includes facility rental fees, speakers’ fees, sponsorships for youths to attend conservation camps, training and supplies for the Trout in the Classroom program, tree nursery stock and planting supplies, printed materials, and costs associated with fundraising. The annual banquet and auction is DTU’s largest fundraiser. This year’s affair will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and the plated dinner will include a chicken entrée, salad, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. Live and silent auctions will be held throughout the evening. Trips to Montana, Spring Creek, and the Potomac River, as well as tuna fishing and skiing, will be up for bids along with golf passes, themed baskets, dinners at two private homes, fishing gear, jewelry, artwork, perfume, and items for infants and children. Witmer will offer an apple pie for sale as well. Additionally, a collectible fly tied by Tom Herr in memory of soldiers killed in Afghanistan has been donated for the auction; the work is so intricate that it took 17 hours to complete. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and tickets must be reserved by Tuesday, March 5, by contacting Witmer at b.witmer@donegaltu.org or 717-380-0281. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see
how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor, along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Early registration will end on Wednesday, Feb. 27. General registration will end on Wednesday, March 20. To register, readers may visit www.lmhs.org or call the LMHS at 717-393-9745. Registration for field trips and seminars is completed separately from the conference, but priority seating will be given to conference attendees.
Conference from pg 1 By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the
deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference.

Female attendees were also invited to attend the prom early to receive complimentary hair and makeup services, as well as manicures. There was also a shoe shine station for the young men. “It’s an incredible honor for us to offer this opportunity to the community,” said Dearolf. “Our teams absolutely love this event and

Greeting guests at the local Night to Shine event was Stacey McNutt, event chair, and Freedom Life Church lead pastor Sam Masteller, who also provided a prayer before the meal. “This is a night of celebration. Nearly 300 Lancaster County business and community leaders came together at the 34th annual Lancaster Heart Ball on Feb. 2 at the Lancaster Country Club. The event raised more than $247,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health. The gala, themed “Fire and Ice,” opened with the Keep the Beat dance hour featuring The Uptown Band playing a full hour of songs with 100 beats per minute, which is the correct tempo for performing HandsOnly CPR. The dance hour was followed by a custom “Fire and Ice” performance from American Music Theatre dancers. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster currently serves 30 children from Lancaster, York, and Chester counties, offering free Orton-Gillingham remediation for dyslexia. The center is a nonprofit organization supported through various fundraising events, including Easter and Thanksgiving pie sales, a walk in October, the Extraordinary Give, apple dumpling and chicken corn soup sales, and the sale of car wash coupons. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster is located in the Masonic Center of Lancaster County, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, whose members run many of the dyslexia program’s fundraisers. For more than two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, have helped to lead the national effort to support children and their families as they overcome the obstacles of dyslexia through their financial support of 45 active centers in 13 states. Dyslexia is a neurologically based condition that affects language acquisition, processing, and decoding. Recent research suggests dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population, reported Children’s Dyslexia Center director Heather Hinkel. People with dyslexia typically have aboveaverage intelligence, but they can struggle in a traditional academic setting. Those who do not receive help can suffer devastating personal consequences; Hinkel noted that dyslexia tops the list of reasons teenagers drop out of school. Dyslexia is treatable with remediation. Since 2002, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster has tutored more than 175 students with a dyslexic profile. The center serves children on a firstcome, first-served basis regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, or religious affiliation. While there is no fee to the students served, it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one child for one year. The center also certifies adults as tutors in Orton-Gillingham and each year offers four scholarships toward the cost of training. For more information about the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster or the pie sale, readers may visit www.childrensdyslexia centeroflancaster.org, call 717481-5680, or email cdclancaster pa@gmail.com.

Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682 Free and Accepted Masons recently sponsored the seventh annual Honor Roll Challenge Night as a reward to those members of Elizabethtown DeMolay who finished the 2018 school year with a 3.0 or greater grade point average. Eight members of Elizabethtown DeMolay were treated to dinner at Ichiban Japanese Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Lancaster. The scholars represented four different school districts in southcentral Pennsylvania. The honorees were Blake Anderson, a 2018 graduate of Donegal High School who just completed the first semester at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Academy of Culinary Arts in Punxsutawney; Gabriel Anderson, a seventh-grader at the Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Jacob Beers, a 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School and a sophomore at West Chester University; Mason Barrick, a seventh-grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School; Daniel Sellers, a 2016 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School and a sophomore
at the Honors College of Susquehanna University; Martin Stoner, a ninth-grader at Solanco High School; and Logan and Connor Vogelsong, a senior and sophomore, respectively, at Elizabethtown Area High School. One of the principal teachings of the Order of DeMolay is appreciation, respect and support for the public schools and the importance of education in the life of young men. Schoolbooks are prominently displayed in all formal meetings and ceremonies of the organization. Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21 from the Elizabethtown, Holtwood, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lititz, Lower Dauphin, Middletown, Mount Joy, Quarryville, and Lebanon areas. The Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter 224 and Cyrene Commandery 34 Knights Templar.
