Amateur photographers of all ages who have snapped scenic photos within the Octoraro Watershed are invited to participate in the Octoraro Watershed Association’s (OWA) third annual photography contest. The goal of the annual event is to share the beauty and wonder of the Octoraro Watershed with the community, since photos will be part of a traveling exhibit at various locations after the contest. Last year, for the first time, contest organizers only accepted hard copies of photos rather than emailed versions. The same rule will apply this year. “We had about 35 entries. Last year was the first year we did not take virtual entries. As a result, people had to print out their entry and bring it to us,” noted Chotty Sprenkle, contest organizer. “The virtual (option) was really convenient, but we need (people) to print out their photos so we can display them at the Quarryville, Atglen and Oxford libraries and for anyone else who wants to put up the pictures at their venue.” “ We are hoping for a robust (number) of entries this year,” she added. It is not necessary to live in the Octoraro Watershed to participate in the contest. Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2,

All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden, Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham. All photographs must be identified with their location within the watershed, whether it be the county, township or borough. Photographs may be color or black and white. Photos will be entered and judged in four categories: Wildlife, which includes plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapes, which includes sites, scenery and historic buildings; Agriculture, which is farm-related activities and/or farm landscapes; and Trailcam, photographs captured on remote cameras. Sprenkle explained that photos cannot be altered or created with computer programs. “The definition of ‘created’ is putting something in the photograph that was not present when you took the photograph,” she noted. “For instance, you cannot place a moon in the photograph if it was not present when you took the photograph. Programs that allow you to enhance a photo for color, clarity, exposure, etc., are acceptable.” All photographs, which measure 8 by 11 inches or larger, must be mounted on foam or hard cardboard. “We will put Velcro on them and attach them to our display boards,” noted Sprenkle. Entries will be accepted at the OWA office, located inside the West Fallowfield Township Building, 3095 Limestone Road, Suite 7, Cochranville. Photos may be dropped off on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6 and 7, between 6 and 8 p.m. each evening. Those who are unable to make those dates should contact Sprenkle for alternate arrangements. by Tim Strawser, who will also play the role of Uncle Brutus. Although this is the first year Strawser is directing, he has played various parts in the Promise Players’ previous iterations of the show. “I really enjoy acting and being somebody else, and I could do that with any theater group. But I love (the Promise P layers ’) community and the message of faith,” Strawser said. “The cast gets pretty close in the weeks leading up to the show.” For every production, the Promise Players chooses a local nonprofit to support in addition to the food bank in Quarryville. The group often highlights an organization that is connected to the play in some way; this year, the Promise Players decided to support Impact Missions, as it is based in a rural part of the county that resembles the setting of the story. Bike ride from pg 1 worked at Black Rock Retreat Center in Quarryville. Riddell worked at Black Rock Retreat Center for 26 years, during which time he became close friends with his co-worker Nancy Engel. Engel battled lung cancer for nearly eight years before passing away in July 2023. In addition to cycling in honor of Engel’s memory, Riddell has dedicated his ride to his sister-inl aw L i s a G re g o r y, h i s friend Matt Bland and his next-door neighbor Bob Kauffman, each of whom has survived a battle with cancer. The Empire State Ride will be the longest ride Riddell has ever attempted,
and he is training every day to increase his endurance and muscle strength in preparation. The route is more than 500 miles in length, and bikers will ride for roughly 80 miles each day. “It’s a big commitment, but to be honest I’m going to enjoy it,” Riddell said. “Biking helps clear your mind, but it’s also a time for me to talk with the Lord. Often, He challenges me about things in my life.” To par ticipate in the Empire State Ride, individuals must raise a minimum of $3,500. Alumni of the local baseball organizations include Josh Squatrito, a former pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Squatrito is a board member for the new association. While the official start of the league is in April, the Solanco Youth Baseball
Bocce team from pg 1 the modern version of the game was developed from games played by the ancient Romans. To start each match, a randomly chosen team throws a small ball called a boccino onto the court. The teams then take turns throwing regular-size bocce balls, and the goal is to get as many balls as possible to land near the boccino. Each round, one point is given to the team with a ball closest to the boccino, and the first team to score 16 points wins the match. The bocce team at Solanco High School is coached by physical education teacher Kacie Hershey, who is assisted by Sam Fickes. In the past, Hershey has collaborated with Unified Spor ts to o f fer ac t iv i t ies in her fitness class, and she has
at te m p te d to c re ate a track and field program through the Special Olympics for the last two years. Hershey has been unable to establish the track and field program due to a low number of students interested in par ticipating ; instead of track and field, school principal Scott Long suggested introducing a bocce program, which only requires eight players to make a team. “Bocce is a sport that anybody can play. T he game can be modified to suit players of any physical ability, and it involves a lot of strategy,” Hershey said. “It’s been neat to see students working together and helping each other incorporate different tactics during games.” Unless a timeout is called, coaches are unable to give players
any directions during a match, requiring students to rely on their teammates to achieve victory. Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s Unified Sports program offers opportunities for players with and without intellectual disabilities to participate in various sports together. An equal number of Special Olympics athletes and partner athletes are typically assigned to a team for training activities and competitions, and athletes are matched by age and ability depending on the sport. “This is the only Special Olympics program at Solanco High School so far, but it will help get the ball rolling with things in the future,” Hershey said. “Overall, it’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience for everybody.”

16 acres from Pioneer Seed Company, and this property evolved into the Solanco Baseball Complex. The first game played at the complex occurred in the spring of 2000, noted Mike Hart, the driving force behind the design and formation of the Solanco Baseball Complex as it stands today. The merger responds to evolving dynamics in youth baseball, with the rise of travel teams starting in 2003 and a shift in participation toward fewer sanctioned Little League programs. At the time of the merger, Solanco and War wick were the only sanctioned Little Leagues left in Lancaster County. The Solanco Youth Baseball Association aims to go beyond league games, introducing coaching clinics, camp opportunities, winter training , and a travel baseball program. This comprehensive approach seeks to develop well-rounded athletes.

Schreiber Center adds new equipment range of therapy goals. The OA SUS system provides physical therapists and clients with a dynamic and open area for therapy sessions, allowing children to move forward, backward, and side to side. This flexibility is crucial for addressing gross motor skill therapy goals such as
learning to stand and balance independently, learning to walk unassisted by mobility aids, and learning to climb stairs safely. Unlike traditional treadmill-based systems, the OASUS harness system enables therapists to create more playful and fun sessions for each child’s unique needs, keeping the child engaged in the therapy process. Mounted directly into the ceiling of the new physical therapy gym using long support rails and a system of steel rods, the OASUS system is designed to ensure a safe and stable foundation for physical therapy sessions. T his secure structure accommodates children of different ages, heights, weights and abilities, and those with various therapy goals.
