Student artist uses craft business to give back
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDWhen Travis Henry of Quarryville was 10 years old, he began to create paintings using the acrylic pouring technique. Travis decided to try the method when his mother, Melissa Henry, found a painting that was made using acrylic pours, and she encouraged him to give it a try. After Travis watched a few YouTube videos to learn the technique, he used it to create a painting for Melissa. In the process, Travis discovered a passion for art; three years later, he’s using his creativity to make a difference in the community.
“Since I enjoyed making the artwork, I figured I could sell some of it.”
School, Ryan Humphries, to complete a summer project that would take him out of his comfort zone. Travis created his business for the assignment, and his first official sale was held at a yard sale in his brother’s neighborhood. “Mr. Humphries’ goal for us over the summer was for us to do something new that would help us grow as a person,” Travis said. “Since I enjoyed making the artwork, I figured I could sell some of it.”
In 2021, Travis created Travis’ Crafts, a business that allows him to sell his acrylic paintings. Travis was challenged by his extensions teacher at Clermont Elementary
Although Travis launched his artistic career with acrylic pours, the young painter has since broadened his catalog to include items such as Christmas ornaments, jewelry, vases, keychains and bookmarks. Travis also taught himself to sew pet toys for cats and dogs, and he creates his jewelry from runoff paint from the acrylic pouring

Dance troupe from pg 1
Pujol opened the Lancaster city-based branch of Paloma seven years ago. The business recently merged with the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance in Maryland.
Pujol has about 100 students, who perform community shows at libraries, schools, retirement communities and more throughout the year.
“We decided to do something above and beyond that,” she said of the impetus to start the performance troupe, which she describes as “mini Riverdance.”
At the Elizabethtown performance, dancers from the Baltimore branch of Doherty Petri will join Lancaster students on stage, and Pujol said the show will feature some impressive talent.
“We have dancers that are in the top five in North America, the top five in Great Britain,” she said. “We have a couple of people who will be competing in world championships. These are really great dancers.”

Pujol grew up in a family of Irish dancers. Her grandmother was a champion Irish dancer from Ireland. “I have always loved Irish dance,” she said. “It’s exciting to see how much interest in it has grown.”
She emphasized that audiences are in for an entertaining show that may offer a peek at what’s to come for some of the performers.
“These kids are incredibly talented, and they put on an amazing show. Audiences are lucky to see what these dancers can do,” she said, noting that her students have gone on to become professional dancers. “They are going to be watching the future.”
Tickets for the event will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by searching for “Celtic Dance Extravaganza” on Eventbrite.

roll and a whoopie pie.
The silent auction and live auction will include various items that have been donated by local businesses and members of the community, such as gift baskets, furniture, hiking gear, quilts, children’s toys and homemade crafts. The auctions will also feature tickets to attractions throughout Lancaster County, including Sight and Sound Theatres, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and Barnstormers’ games.
“For me, it feels like a big family reunion every year,” said Raeanne Nixon, executive director of Solid Rock Youth Ministries. “I love seeing everyone come together and connect with each other, and it’s neat to see people’s heart for the ministry.”
The proceeds from the event will help Solid Rock Youth Ministries cover expenses for its many programs, which the organization offers to the community at no cost. Solid Rock hosts Christian programming for children of all ages, including after-school programs at local elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. The ministry also offers events and activities for homeschooled students. Although the programs often incorporate a snack, a game and a Bible lesson, Solid Rock offers different activities to suit each age group.
As Solid Rock Youth Ministries has grown over the years, Nixon and members of the board have searched for a new location with more space. The organization is currently in the fundraising stage to renovate a facility in Quarryville, and multiple local churches have offered to host its programs in the interim. “We’re really thankful for the support of our churches right now,” Nixon said. “They’ve really helped us out in so many different ways.”
Solid Rock Youth Ministries asks that guests register before Saturday, March 16, at http://tinyurl .com/solidrockauction.
