A Night For New Hope To Feature The Bedouin Fires By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“There’s this great organization in the community, and we thought, since we’re already involved, why don’t we use our other talents to make a big noise?” And that is how A Night for New Hope came about, explained Matt Huber, bass player and vocalist for The Bedouin Fires. The band will perform in the benefit concert for New Hope Community Life Ministry on Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood. The four-piece band also includes Caley Roark, Scott Weyman, and Kirk Landis. John Girvin is an alumnus and may sit in on a few pieces during A Night for New Hope. Huber noted that his wife, Amy, is on New Hope’s board of directors along with Roark and Girvin. The organization is dedicated to helping families and

individuals access Christ-centered, professional counseling. “I just think there’s so much brokenness and losses you go through in life,” Huber remarked. “What a great organization and its heart for the community.” New Hope executive director Neil Uniacke expressed his gratitude that counselor Elaine Campbell has recently been named a certified clinical trauma professional. “A lot of adults were traumatized kids,” Uniacke remarked, noting that abuse, addictions, and violence are common causes of trauma. “ We’re trying to bring families back to healing and wholeness.” Huber suggested that some of the music The Bedouin Fires plays is relevant to New Hope’s mission. “We have a song about walking beside someone as they’re going through a struggle and supporting them,” he said. Change can be difficult. As interim pastor at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church, 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, Dan Perrin’s primary role has been to help congregation members work through the emotions that rise after change occurs. “My job is to absorb the bumps and struggles that come with transitions so the church is able to move forward,” Perrin explained. Faith Church’s previous full-time pastor, Sam Andreades, had served the church for nearly five years before leaving on July 31, 2018, to pursue other ministry opportunities. Perrin started his

Former Major League Baseball player Sid Bream will be the featured speaker during the 11th annual Sportsman Event on Saturday, March 16, at the Christian Life Center (CLC), 125 Saginaw Road, Lincoln University. Bream, who retired in 1995, is well-known for his slide into home as a member of the Atlanta Braves in game seven of the 1992 National League Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which sent the Braves to the World Series. Bream, who resides in the Pittsburgh area with his family, will speak at the event in Chester County as part of his new vocation that includes speaking in churches, for youth groups and at schools all across the United States. According to event organizer Steve Shuster, Bream is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting, fishing and talking about his faith. “He appeals to a wide range of audiences,” said Shuster. “He is a baseball player and outdoor enthusiast. We are excited to have him (as the speaker) this year.” Shuster noted that about 200 people attend the dinner annually from throughout the Lancaster and Chester county areas. Organizers hope that Bream will

attract even more attendees. “We sent (the information) to all the Little Leagues to get the word out. Anyone involved in the outdoors and sports (is encouraged to attend),” he said. The event on March 16 will open at 4 p.m., when visitors will be able to view displays by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other related groups. “You can go through the displays and view the silent auction items,” said Shuster. “We will have brief announcements at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will start at 5:45 p.m.” The dinner will feature wild game dishes, but other menu items will be offered, including pizza and hot dogs. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, dessert or side dish in a quantity to feed at least eight people. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers. “There is a prize for the most unique wild game dish,” said Shuster. “We have had everything from kangaroo to alligator.” There will also be a chili cookoff. There is no cost to enter, and no registration is required. Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners as determined by a panel of judges. Bream’s presentation will follow dinner at approximately 6:45 p.m. The evening will end with the announcement of door prize win-

ners and silent auction winners. The Sportsman Event is open to all, including women and children. In addition to outdoor gear and hunting equipment, nonhunting items will be included in the silent auction. “We’ll have gift cards, tickets to (a local theater), a basketful of fun summer items and sport memorabilia, including Carson Wentz signed items.” Shuster said. Also, available for purchase will be a recipe book featuring food that has been served at the covered dish dinner through the years. The Sportsman Event is presented annually by the Outdoorsman Ministry Group at CLC. The Outdoorsman Ministry is made up of members with various levels of experience in hunting, fishing, archery and photography. Membership is not limited to church members; all are welcome. The group meets every other Sunday at the church. Readers may contact Shuster at sshuster@wlgore.com for meeting dates and times. All proceeds from the event will go toward the group’s youth archery program, which is held at the CLC in October, and to its homeless outreach program. “On the last Monday of the month we serve the homeless dinner in Elkton, Maryland, at the Paris Foundation,” Shuster reported. “We

County Drug and Alcohol Commission to award several mini-grants to projects. Compass Mark recently announced it awarded more than $26,000 in mini-grants to four Lancaster County coalitions for prevention projects that will be implemented between now and June. Grant recipients include Ephrata Cares, Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA), Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), and The Bridges Poverty Task Force. The Ephrata Public Library, Ephrata Cares, and the Northern Lancaster HUB will design, facilitate, and staff a 21-week character education after-school program for

tweens and teenagers in the Ephrata community. Designed around 12 values to strengthen and increase community protective factors against substance abuse and addiction, the after-school program, called “Character Matters,” will take place at the Ephrata Public Library. The library will also provide reading materials for families and teenagers to educate themselves about substance abuse and addiction. LCRA will introduce the Media Education Project (MEP), which focuses on sharing evidence-based education as well as prevention strategies with the media, so that they can maximize their role as lead-

ers in this community health issue. The primary focus will be on the use of language and attitude as well as the depiction of those affected by addiction in the media. The LCRA MEP team will meet with representatives from local media outlets, comprising print, radio, digital, and television, to educate them face-to-face about the disease of addiction and language and image standards. DSAA will host bi-monthly family retreats where adult family members attend a full day of education about addiction, self-care, and family issues. Many people struggle to understand addiction and how it changes their loved one’s behavior. The family retreats will provide access to education and resources that can help families better support and assist their loved ones, while also teaching self-care tactics to keep the family unit healthy. The Bridges Poverty Task Force aims to support the health and the ability of individuals to withstand challenges, such as poverty. With their grant, they will host collaboration meetings within the community to address the needs and barriers of those experiencing poverty or other social problems. The meetings will help build awareness of the Bridges Task Force, build community, and provide access to resources to those unable to find help or unaware that help exists. The organization will also host monthly dinners during which providers and parents will be invited to share and collaborate around needs and resources. Compass Mark’s mission is to prevent addiction through education, skill-building, and community mobilization. The nonprofit serves Lancaster and Lebanon counties and seeks to guide and empower all people toward healthy, fulfilling lives free from addiction. “It combined the effort to make trees available to everybody and conserve soil and waterways, Gregory shared. The tree sale has continued for nearly a half-century. It is the only fundraising event for the LCCD, which, as an annex to county government, receives some public funding as well as grants and private contributions. The funds are used to provide education and watershed programs, which are held in classrooms or on individual waterways where volunteers are working on stream cleanups, Gregory said. The education programs are available for teachers in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college classes, and all lessons meet state standards for environment and ecology. LCCD also works with classes to perform stream studies, which assess the health of a waterway by cataloging and counting plant, insect, and fish life. There is a second, equally important reason for the seedling sale. “ We’re making trees and other plants accessible for county residents to put in the soil to keep it in place so it doesn’t erode due to wind or rain, Gregory said. Many of the plants also serve dual purposes, whether it is providing food for people or wildlife or acting as windbreaks or Christmas trees. The sale organizers make sure they are offering as many native species as possible, and they work with area nurseries to get appropriate stock for the sale. New offerings this year include coralberry, which holds its bright berries through the start of winter, and three selfpollinating fruit trees: Montmorency sour cherry, Klondike white peach, and Coralstar peach. The majority of trees on the sale list are bare root stock that will be dipped in a root preservative gel so that buyers will not have to plant their purchases immediately. As the trees are seedlings, the sale is also offering tubes with stakes designed to protect young plants from stressors and potential damage from deer, moles, voles, and other creatures that would eat their roots or stems. To see a pictorial description list of all species and access an order form, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org . For more information or to request that an order form be mailed to them, folks may call the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5. Payment is due when orders are placed and must be sent to the LCCD. The office is located at the Farm and Home Center and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

“That’s the weekend before Easter, remarked education coordinator Sallie Gregory. “Hopefully folks will consider purchasing (plants) to celebrate Easter and Earth Day, which is on April 22. Gregory explained that conservation districts were created in response to the Dust Bowl, in which windstorms caused massive soil erosion in the Midwest in the early 1930s. Men and boys employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted trees around the nation, including Pennsylvania, to reduce erosion, especially along streambanks. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970, and the LCCD launched its first tree seedling sale in 1974 to celebrate Earth Day and honor the CCC.

A Night For New Hope from pg 1 The band plays a mix of covers of groups like U2, Coldplay, and Dave Matthews Band as well as hymns and original compositions. Its styles range from alternative rock to jazz and from marching band to choral. “We’re not really a worship band, but we’re not a rock band,” Huber commented. “We’re an amalgamation of all the music we’ve ever played. Scott and Caley have music degrees, so they’ve experienced a lot, and Kirk and I have played all our lives.” Bedouins are a nomadic group of Arab people who live in the Arabian, Syrian, and northern African deserts. The name of the band comes from a reference in the U2 song “Beautiful Day,” which discusses a person’s search for truth. “We’re trying to sing about truth. We don’t have a (musical) home, and we’re OK with that,” Huber said. “We really love (harmony), and we really focus on that. There’s something beautiful in it.” The doors for the concert will open at 6:15 p.m. Admission will not be charged, but an offering will be accepted. During the event, Uniacke and New Hope board chair Jerry Phillips will talk about the organization and its ministry. Although tickets are not required for admission, the organizers have requested that folks let them know they plan to attend by calling New Hope at 717-786-2802 or clicking the appropriate option on the event page on Facebook. The page may be found by searching for “New Hope Benefit Concert Featuring The Bedouin Fires.”

Getting Ready For Warmer Weather: Early Spring Landscaping Tips As winter tapers off, people may be antsy to spend more time outdoors in the increasingly warm weather. For those with green thumbs, outdoor plans may involve tending to the garden and preparing other components of their landscapes. Homeowners may draw inspiration from budding crocuses

and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ the following tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season: · One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and it may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. · While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it is better to know the last

of the possible frost dates; otherwise, homeowners may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day. To check frost dates, homeowners should refer to The Farmer’s Almanac. · Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency - just crumbling when lifted. Soil that is too muddy after the spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Gardeners should speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments can be added to the soil to enrich it. · Fill in bare patches of lawn soon by mixing a few shovelfuls

Johnson's

of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to a bare area, water it, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in. · Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. · Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter. Use a broom and a leaf blower to remove any leftover leaves. · Check if the front porch, railings, or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring

hardware or doing major demolition. When investing in a kitchen project, homeowners should consider incorporating the following items: · Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables people to soak dishes in one side and then wash on the other. It also makes it easier to wash and prep produce for meals. · Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there is something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some well-placed bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. · Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to have storage solutions built into cabinetry and the pantry. Slide-out shelving, nooks for paper towel rolls, and custom-designed areas to store stand mixers and other necessities

can make kitchens more functional. · Outdoor access: If possible, design a kitchen so it is easy to access the backyard via sliding doors. This can make outdoor entertaining or even coffee on the deck much easier. · Under-cabinet lighting: Fixtures installed under cabinets provide both ambient lighting and task lighting. This type of lighting makes it easier for people to see what they are working on, as even well-placed overhead lighting can fail to illuminate dark corners and spots on the counters. · Convenient warming drawer: This appliance, which provides backup to the oven, is a slide-out drawer that can keep prepared foods out of the way and warm until they are served. It is particularly handy for holidays and other times when homeowners entertain. · Beverage station: Designate one area of the kitchen for beverages, such as coffee and tea. This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area when homeowners host gatherings.

days. If hiring a professional, it is good to get on their schedule now to ensure the project is finished by the onset of nice weather. · Think about what annuals to plant in the landscape this year that will complement any existing shrubbery or perennials.

Kitchens are among the most-used rooms in many homes. Even though the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states the average person spends just 68 minutes each weekday consuming food and about 37 minutes preparing meals, the kitchen is not just a spot focused on food. It also is a gathering place for conversation, homework, and family time. In fact, some of the more popular trends concerning kitchen layouts showcase

homeowners’ desire to maximize the comfort and efficiency of these rooms. ing. Contractors will determine if structural reinforcement is necessary and include such costs in their estimates. In addition, homeowners should make sure to ask contractors to investigate piping and plumbing so no surprises pop up after the tub has been purchased and work has begun. If estimates from contractors indicate that such an installation project is a possibility, homeowners can consider these benefits of freestanding tubs before making their final decisions. · Cleaning: Because they are detached from other bathroom fixtures and not flush against the wall, freestanding tubs tend to be easier to clean than built-in bathtubs. Many freestanding tubs are accessible from all sides, making it easier to reach all those nooks

and crannies where grime can build up. · Return on investment: In its 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report, Remodeling magazine noted that upscale bathroom remodels recouped 56.2 percent of their cost at resale. That was a better return on investment than an upscale kitchen remodel (53.5 percent) and an upscale master suite addition (48.3 percent). The thought of a sizable return on investment can make relaxing in a freestanding tub that much more enjoyable. · Warmth: Even freestanding tubs made of materials other than cast iron offer notable heat retention. Stone resin bathtubs,

for example, provide excellent insulation on cold nights. That is ideal for people who want to unwind in the tub without having to exit early because the water has become cold.

One home design element that tends to have an instant wow factor is a freestanding tub. Freestanding tubs have an air of luxury that can help current homeowners relax and impress buyers when homes go on the market. Freestanding tubs are typically made of cast iron or porcelain. The home improvement website HomeAdvisor notes that cast iron is durable and solid and retains heat well, which is ideal for those who want to spend more than a little time relaxing in a freestanding tub. However, because cast iron is so heavy, installing a cast-iron tub may require structural reinforcement of the flooring, which will add to the overall cost of the project. According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost to install a tub varies widely depending on the type of tub, the materials it is made of, and other factors, including plumbing and piping. For example, the cost to install a freestanding tub will rise considerably if new plumbing and piping are necessary. Homeowners considering tree services can explore the following ways that some professional arbor attention can protect them and their homes. · Tree services can help protect a home’s foundation. Old trees that stretch well into the sky can be captivating, but they also can pose a threat to a home’s foundation. Such trees may have especially large root zones that may extend beneath walkways and even a home. In the latter instance, foundations may crack as roots try to stake their claim to the ground beneath a home. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, it often costs less to repair foundation issues than to fix major problems after they have taken their toll. A professional tree service can remove aging trees that might be beautiful and aweinspiring but still pose a threat to a home and the areas surrounding them. · Tree services can improve visibility. Trees that have aged a bit since their last trimming might affect the view of a property from inside a home. Over-

grown branches can compromise residents’ ability to see and experience the natural beauty just outside their windows. The average homeowner may be able to trim short trees on his or her own, but if views from the second floor of a home or higher have been compromised, it is much safer to call a professional tree service. Such services have the right tools and experienced personnel to safely trim high branches on tall trees. · Tree services can help prevent future damage. Even if trees

made it through a recent winter unscathed, that is no guarantee next winter or even the coming seasons of spring, summer, and fall will not ultimately prove their undoing. According to BNC Insurance and Risk Advisors, homeowners may be liable if a tree they know poses a threat falls onto a passerby or a neighbor’s property and causes damage or injury. It is important to have all trees properly trimmed each year, but especially those that can fall on one’s home or neighbors’ homes.

Enhancing A Yard With Hardscaping Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. It can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found that standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home. Although plants, grass, and other items can improve curb appeal, homeowners should not overlook hardscaping. Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the nonliving

features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs. DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to add to the hardscape features on their properties or enhance the ones already in existence. C h o o s e m a t e r i a l s . As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions

they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, and walkways made of pavers or bricks, as well as retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard. C h o o s e a t h e m e . The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an Eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. Professionals suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work cannot be completed at once. This way the eventual finished

project will be cohesive. Think about the purpose. Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that do not grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards that have sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds. Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy. Consult a professional. While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure that hardscaping features last for years to come.

Cold weather can take its toll on a property, especially when winters are harsh. Most parts of the landscape are vulnerable to damage from winter storms, but trees may be especially susceptible. By the end of winter, trees may benefit from some professional TLC. Tree services provide a host of offerings. While fall is a popular time to remove trees from a property, doing so in spring is not unheard of, especially if trees were affected by winter storms and now pose a threat to a home and the people who live inside it.

Drift Off To Dreamland sleepers due to their level of supWith The Perfect Mattress port. People should keep in mind People make many renovations around their homes to improve their quality of life. Bedrooms are no exception, and making some changes there can greatly affect quality of sleep and improve the health and wellbeing of residents. The temperature of a bedroom, its configuration, and its lighting can impact a person’s ability to get a good night’s sleep; however, the item that may bear the most influence is the mattress. The Better Sleep Council notes that whether one wakes up feeling rested and healthy depends largely on the age of a mattress and its condition. A good mattress should alleviate pressure on joints while providing bodily support. It should not be a contributor to aches and pains. Mattresses that are seven years old or older may need to be replaced. People considering purchasing a new mattress have many options from which to choose, and the task of selecting a mattress may seem overwhelming. But even though there are many options, it is key for people to discover which material is right for them. Innerspring Innerspring (also called coil) mattresses have been around for some time. The metal springs provide internal support. The number of coils, types of coils, and distribution pattern throughout the mattress impact how well the bed will conform to the body. These mattresses may be best for back or stomach

that innerspring mattresses may have limited durability and may start to sag after a few years.

Memory Foam Memory foam mattresses are relatively recent additions to the market. According to the mattress shopping resource The Sleep Judge, memory foam mattresses may eventually replace innerspring mattresses. Famous for its ability to contour to the shape of the user’s body, memory foam envelops a person and absorbs energy. This means that there is less motion transfer, which can be a big plus when a partner moves around. Memory foam provides a high level of pressure point relief and promotes proper spine alignment. Gel Foam Gel foam mattresses bounce back to their original form when pressure is released. Hollow columns in the mattress allow for increased air flow that improves this pressure release and enables people to sleep coolly and comfortably. Sometimes gel is paired with memory foam for a hybrid mattress. Latex Latex mattresses are known for their durability and comfort. Latex conforms to the body more generally than memory foam, so it bounces back quickly. One of the biggest draws to latex mattresses is that they are made from natural rubber. Cost can be prohibitive, however, as they tend to be expensive.

Why It Can Be Smart To Have A Smart Home

Technology has changed the way people live in the 21st century. Once ubiquitous, landlines anchored to kitchen walls have now given way to smartphones that can be taken anywhere. Bulky television sets that required at least two people to move have been replaced with high-definition offerings so light and thin they can be mounted on living room walls. Devices are everywhere. A recent visual networking index forecast from Cisco predicts that by 2021, there will be four networked devices and connections per person across the globe. Those figures are even greater in North America, where Cisco estimates each person will have 13 networked devices and connections by 2021. With all those devices, it is no surprise that a greater number of people are embracing the smart home movement. Those who are considering converting their homes can benefit from learning more about smart homes and their advantages.

What is a smart home? According to SmartHomeUSA.com, the term “smart home” is commonly used to define residences in which appliances, lighting, heating and cooling units, televisions, computers, entertainment systems, and security systems are capable of communicating with one another. Each of these components can be controlled remotely, typically via a smartphone.

of Americans say that smart home technology saves them an average of 30 minutes per day. That can be an especially beneficial advantage for busy parents and/or professionals who find it difficult to juggle all of their daily responsibilities. · M o n e y : Another benefit to smart homes is their cost savings. Because devices can be controlled remotely, smart home owners can adjust the temperatures on their heating and cooling units while away from home. They should request a list of routers that are compatible with their WiFi from their service provider, as not all routers will necessarily work with that internet connection. If possible, they should upgrade to the fastest WiFi their internet provider offers, as that will make the smart home that much more enjoyable and frustration-free. Devices Homeowners will not necessarily need to upgrade their devices to get a smart home. In fact, homeowners who do control or can control any device in their home with a smartphone are already on their way to having a smart home. One upgrade may be to purchase a programmable thermostat that is compatible with a smartphone; this might be beneficial if the home’s current thermostat is old and not internet-compatible. But today’s user-friendly technology makes it relatively easy for anyone to turn his or her home into a smarter one, and homes may only need some simple, inexpensive upgrades to join the smart home revolution. Before getting started, homeowners should recognize that there are certain must-have items to turn a home into a smart home. Hub The hub refers to software or hardware that connects all of the devices and gets them to work together. Homeowners often have various devices made by different manufacturers; while it might seem difficult to enable those devices to work together, a hub does that work instead. And because they can be connected to a smartphone, hubs also make it possible to control devices while people are away from home. Solanco Finishes Fourth in District 3 5A Playoffs by Mona Steinhauer

Solanco’s exciting run through the District Three 5A girls’ basketball bracket came to an end this past Thursday night in Quarryville. The school’s first ever top seed advanced to the semifinals with a solid 51-44 win over No. 16 New Oxford and a come-from-behind thriller over No. 8 Mechanicsburg before suffering losses to Palmyra (54-51 OT) and Twin Valley (45-37) last week, and settling for fourth place in the district. Tuesday the girls hosted No. 12 Palmyra for a chance to play in the District Championship at the Santander Arena in Reading. The Cougars, however, were in the midst of their own Cinderella run, having knocked off fifth seed LampeterStrasburg and fourth seed Spring Grove, on a last second shot, to get

to Solanco. After falling behind 5-0, Solanco regrouped behind Grace Kreider’s seven points and a three-ball by Paige Phillips that put the Mares in front 13-9 with 1:02 left in the first. They settled for a 15-12 edge on a steal by Kara McClune and a dish to Phillips with a bucket at the buzzer. Kreider (4 steals, 3 assists), who led all players with 20 points, dropped in five in the second quarter as Solanco doubled up the visitors 10-5 for a 25-17 lead at the break. “Grace played an excellent game,” praised head coach Chad McDowell. “She elevated her play. She has the drive to play big in big game situations.” The Mares, creating some turnovers on their full court press, looked to take control. Three-pointers by McClune and Phillips (8 points)

sandwiched a jumper by Olivia Richardson and pushed the lead to 35-24 with 3:08 left in the third. But the Cougars, who have battled adversity all season long, responded with an 11-0 run and a 37-35 lead with 6:42 left in regulation. It was nip-and-tuck from that point forward. Down 40-36, Solanco, in front of a large pack of boisterous home fans, got two straight buckets from Jade Eshleman (4 points, 5 rebounds) and a pair of free throws from Kreider to go back in front, 42-40 with 4:20 left. Kreider’s jumper with 1:06 left broke the 44-44 tie but Richardson’s (16 points) two free throws with 29 seconds pushed the game into overtime as Kreider’s final attempt was blocked. Both teams traded buckets early before free throws down the stretch determined the outcome. Jenna Dombach converted a one-and-one with 1:07 left but Palmyra made four straight, including two with 7.3 left to wrap up the scoring. The Cougars (15-10) were 17-of-20 for the game and went on to top No. 3 Gettysburg (22-5) to win the District crown. Solanco hit 10-of-18.

“They were a good foul shooting team and we gave them too many opportunities,” said McDowell. “They got into the bonus early in the third quarter and then gained momentum with that run late in the quarter. We did have our chances,” he continued, “but we missed too many foul shots in the fourth quarter and overtime when the game was on the line. We usually make those. “We had a great game plan coming in and we executed it for the majority of the game.” Also contributing was Jess Cabrera and Aleksa Burger who combined for 11 points and 6 rebounds and Mackenzie Gladfelter who hit the boards in the first half with Eshleman on the bench with two fouls. Two nights later the Mares hosted No. 2 Twin Valley (19-5) with a third place finish on the line. The Raiders were coming off a ten point loss to three seed Gettysburg and rely heavily on their leading scorer, Peyton McDaniel (22.9 ppg avg), the Berks Player of the Year. “Peyton has over 40 offers to play at the college level, mostly D1 and D2 offers…many from the Ivy League schools,” shared McDowell. “Aleksa

got the defensive assignment and did an outstanding job. For four seasons, she has drawn some of the toughest defensive assignements and always steps up. When Aleksa needed a break, we rotated Ilynd Rapant in. She did a great job as held.” With Burger and Rapant frustrating

McDaniel, sophomore guard Ava Morrow (game high 16) stepped up and netted eight of TV’s 13 first quarter points. Kreider was on fire from long range, dropping in three for nine of the teams’ 11 points. Cabrera (8 points) and McClune each dropped in a three and Burger

We thank them.” The loss leaves Solanco as the fourth place team in the District Three 5A class and matches the school’s highest finish. The 2011-12 team also finished in fourth place. added four points in the second frame as Solanco grabbed a 23-22 lead at the break. Cabrera netted half of Solanco’s 10 third quarter points and the Raiders managed just seven and fell behind 33-29. But with eight minutes left, the roles were reversed. Dombach and Burger managed one field goal each to account for the hosts total while McDaniel (13 points) got loose for five of the Raider’s 16 quarter points to spark the come-from-behind win. “The first three quarters were close but we struggled to get shots to fall in the fourth quarter,” McDowell said. “We had some good looks but we went cold. We did everything we could, but they outlasted us,” he added. “They got some easy looks and we just struggled. “Each game during districts was a

One of the reasons Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) marketing coordinator Charlotte Leckow works so hard gathering items for the live and silent auctions held during the organization’s annual pasta buffet is that the fundraiser helps support the work of Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHALC, in area schools. “Gretchen goes into classrooms to talk about mental health issues,” said Leckow. “She talks about what depression is and encourages (students) to be open about these topics and to support each other and to advocate for themselves.” The goal, according to Leckow, is to remove the stigma associated with mental health issues and help the students feel more comfortable discussing them. On Friday, March 8, MHALC will hold the fundraiser, now in its third decade, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the live and silent auctions will begin at 6:45 p.m. Silent auction winners will be announced throughout the evening. In addition to her duties with MHALC, Gaudioso does much of the cooking for the pasta buffet. “We will have two kinds

of pastas and offer meat and regular sauce,” said Gaudioso, who added that salad, as well as meat, sausage, and plain lasagnas, will also be on the menu, along with bread donated by a local bakery. According to Kristin Labezius, assistant program director and intensive case manager with Community Services Group of MHALC, volunteers of all ages will gather at the church on the evening of March 7 when the cooking begins. Gaudioso noted that 10 large chafing dishes of lasagna are prepared to feed about 300 guests, and Leckow added that nearly 40 volunteers coming from all professions will join in the effort. The evening’s silent auction will include at least 100 items, including sports memorabilia, pottery, admissions to Rock Ford Plantation, tours and tastings, tickets to a summer concert series held in a vineyard, donations by local artists and craftspeople, and gift certificates for area eateries. “We have cleaning services, dental whitening treatments, (and) Hershey camping tickets, and we have participants who donate artwork as well,” said Leckow. Up to 40 donations will be included in the live auction. Weekend getaways; a hot air balloon ride; a limo ride anywhere in Lancaster County for a prom or wedding;

Pittsburgh area, Cincinnati, and Saint Louis. After the recession, Perrin was an interim pastor in Baltimore, then he served as chaplain at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC) for two years. Most recently, he was interim pastor at a church in Cochranville. Perrin expects to be with Faith Church for another 18 months to two years. In addition to meeting with families and individuals, Perrin has been working with the board of elders to think through what qualities they want in their next pastor. He has been responsible for preaching the bulk of the sermons, although executive pastor Andy Pickens and youth and families pastor Tim Mindemann also take turns in the pulpit. Perrin is also preparing the congregation for Mindemann’s departure, as he will be moving to Tennessee to serve as a lead pastor there. Mindemann had served Faith Church for 11 years, and Perrin had mentored him as he went

through seminary. The church will not call a youth pastor until after a new lead pastor is hired, but church members will keep the youth ministry going. Perrin is not involved with starting new ministries, but he is helping to rebuild existing ones, such as Sunday school and the worship process. And, in that way, change can be easy. Starting on Sunday, March 10, Faith Church will flip its meeting times. Sunday school will begin at 9 a.m., worship will start at 10:30 a.m., and a fellowship time will be held between them. “I normally wouldn’t do something like this, but a lot of people asked for it,” Perrin said. “We made the announcement on the last Sunday of January, and I have not heard one complaint.” The time change will enable corporate worship services to be more available to the community, Perrin explained, adding, “People traditionally see church starting at 10:30 or 11 a.m.” The later service

time will make it easier for members to invite guests, and it will better suit the residents of QPRC, which was founded as a ministry of Faith Church. The contents and blended style of the worship service will remain the same for now. Perrin described his preaching as expositional and applied. Faith Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America, which is committed to the inerrancy of Scripture and is dedicated to world missions and evangelism. Perrin noted that Faith Church has made a special effort to practice compassion. It regularly hosts events for underserved populations, as well as numerous Bible studies and other activities for children, youths, men, and women, and it seeks to make a positive contribution to the community. “Our commitment to compassion is based on the commands of Christ to be like He is,” Perrin said. For more information about Faith Church, folks may call the office at 717-786-7559, email frpc@faithrpc.org, or visit www.faithrpc.org.
