Memorial Church welcomes new pastor

Memorial Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, recently welcomed Dave Coryell as its new lead pastor. As the church undergoes multiple large changes, Coryell said he looks forward to connecting with congregation members and assisting with its youth ministry program in his role.

Coryell has been actively involved in various youth ministries for several years, traveling to more than 50 countries to train pastors, church leaders and youth workers over the course of his career. Coryell is a graduate of Messiah University, and he began serving as a youth pastor while he earned a Master of Divinity from Evangelical Seminary. After helping establish a youth ministry program at a United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, Coryell got involved with Arrow Leadership Program to offer Christian ministry training.

In 2007, Coryell became the executive director of Christian Endeavor, an organization that provides training resources, educational materials and other forms of support for churches, pastors and youth groups. In 2016, Coryell transitioned to a role serving as the general secretary for the global ministry, and he continues to travel four to five times a year for Christian Endeavor training programs. Coryell first heard about the open position at Memorial Church after he was contacted by the church’s district superintendent. The congregation was experiencing difficulty finding a pastor who suited its theology, as it is currently in the process of disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church. Coryell discussed the opportunity with his wife, and he decided to meet members of the church to see if he would be a good fit. Upon visiting Memorial Church, Coryell discovered his former student

Eddie Adams served as its associate pastor. “I got to know Eddie as a student, so it was exciting to see he was in that role,” Coryell said. “He said he was willing to serve under my leadership. I see us as a team, and we’ve been working together since I started.”

One of Coryell’s goals is to change the way the world views youth ministry. Most youth ministries are led by adults, but Coryell said he hopes to help shift the leadership to the younger generations. “We want to turn the keys over to young people so it can become youth in ministry,” added Coryell. “That way the

youth have an opportunity to exercise the skills and abilities God has given them.”

As a native of Berks County, Coryell said he’s excited to be back in a rural Pennsylvanian community similar to the one he grew up in. Coryell added that the members of Memorial Church have given him a warm welcome since he officially started as its lead pastor in January. “It’s been so much fun to get to know them,” said Coryell. “It’s such a caring, loving group of people; they are just so kind.”

Schearer has also won numerous elk calling competitions throughout the United States, and his demonstration will include various tips and tricks for avid hunters. Calvary Independent

Baptist Church has hosted the annual Sportsman’s Banquet for more than 20 years.

The tradition was started by two members of the congregation who frequently traveled to areas such as Colorado and Wyoming to hunt elk, and they wanted to create an event for other big game hunters in the community to share food and stories with one another. Although the founding members have since passed away, church members and hunters throughout the Southern End continue to support the event, which averages approximately 125 attendees annually.

“People just enjoy being able to get together to share some food and wild game with one another,” said Daniel Crisman, pastor of Calvary Independent Baptist Church. “You get to see some faces you probably only see once a year, and we get a lot of people from outside the church.”

Calvary Independent Baptist Church will offer services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday. A community breakfast will be held at the church in between services.

federal and state levels.

LEMA uses a notification system called LANC-Alert to send real-time updates to Lancaster County residents during emergencies. The alert system uses phone calls, text messaging and emails to keep people informed, and many other emergency management agencies utilize similar procedures. Unlike many other agencies, however, LEMA faces the added component of serving Amish and Mennonite communities that have limited access to electronic communication.

To better serve Lancaster County’s unique communities, LEMA is in the process of creating a severe weather alert system for those who do not have access to LANCAlert notifications. The

idea was proposed by the National Weather Service, which receives thousands of calls every year from members of Plain communities who are concerned about severe forecasts and the threat that they pose to crops. The new system, which LEMA hopes to implement in the spring, will allow residents to opt in for emergency landline notifications by submitting a physical form.

LEMA took the idea to the Amish Safety Committee to assess which types of alerts Plain community members are most interested in, such as warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Although LEMA is still developing a distribution plan, the organization will

hand out opt-in forms at mud sales, farm and family safety days and other local events.

“This is part of a whole community approach. We’re trying to think of all the different groups in the area and how to best prepare them for emergencies,” said Brooke Bowman, community resilience coordinator and volunteer liaison at LEMA. “The National Weather Service brought this idea to us as a guinea pig project because of how large the Plain community is here.”

Until 2021, LEMA worked with the South Central Task Force to send mass calls and text alerts via a reverse 911 system. After the system became inactive, LEMA used fund-

Ladies’ Lenten tea slated

The Middle Octorara Women will sponsor the annual ladies’ Lenten tea on Saturday, March 9, at Middle Octorara Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The program, featuring Perfect Harmony, will begin at 2 p.m., and the tea will follow in the social hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite tea cup.

Perfect Harmony is a vocal trio specializing in storytelling through music. Based in Lancaster, the group consists of friends Ric Zimmerman, Kat Prickett and Sarah Poague. Together, they perform original arrangements with live piano accompaniment as well as a cappella selections. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of

musical styles, ranging from folk to Broadway to gospel.

Perfect Harmony had performed at venues across Lancaster County, like the historic Star Barn in Elizabethtown, and has sung the national anthem for the Lancaster Barnstormers and Reading Royals. It has represented “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at Dollywood Theme Park and the DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J.; and the Ohio Star Theater in Sugarcreek, Ohio. It has also opened for Larry Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers.

ing from the American Rescue Plan Act to create LANC-Alert, which it implemented in December 2023.

“We’ve been rolling out the English community side of it more seamlessly. Lancaster County residents can sign up from their devices and choose which alerts they want to receive,” said LEMA hazardous materials administrator Zachary Gibbons. “People can opt in for anything from agricultural weather notifications to seasonal alerts.”
