“Smoke On The Mountain” Is A Tale Of Faith, Music By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The singing Sanders family is heading into town … in North Carolina in June 1938. The family’s entre into performing traditional and bluegrass gospel songs after a five-year hiatus is the subject of “Smoke on the Mountain,” the latest show to be produced by the Promise Players theater group. Performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26; Fridays, March 20 and 27; and Saturdays, March 21 and 28. Matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m. on March 21 and 28 and on Sundays, March 22 and 29. Seats may be reserved by visiting http://lampcob.com/promise-players. Payment will be accepted at the door.
Children age 12 and under may donate nonperishable food items for local foods banks in lieu of payment. Free child care will be provided for children under age 6. The stage will be placed in the corner of the sanctuary and the chairs will be rearranged so that even those seated in the back corners will have a sightline to the action. The new stage location will accommodate a larger audience, too. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.” “About 10 years ago, someone approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We
looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton
recalled. “The same person came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.” See “Smoke On The Mountain” pg 6
The Promise Players theater group will present “Smoke on the Mountain” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on March 20 to 22 and 26 to 29.

AUTHOR VISITS
The Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host two author events in March. Both events are open to the public. an hour and tailored to younger performers, but it retains the same charm and drama of the original. There will be an intermission, with concessions available, making the total time about 90 minutes. “It’s a shorter version. Some of the harder songs are pulled out (and) solo pieces are pulled out to make it kidfriendly,” explained WFCS music teacher Ellen Miller. “The most popular songs you loved from ‘The Lion King’ are in there.” There are some sad moments in the story, but the show is still appropriate for young members of the audience. “We do a good job of portraying those as well as enjoying the fun moments,” director Elizabeth Eckman said. The musical is a bigger project than the school has undertaken before. “We did smaller musicals in the past few years. This is the first year we could tackle a big production,” Miller shared. “We knew the roles would be filled and done amazingly well.” See “The Lion King Jr.” pg 2
Students from West Fallowfield Christian School will present “The Lion King Jr.” on March 13 and 14. Among the performers are (front, from left) Justin Yu, Harvey Reyburn, Caleb Campos, (back) Emmerson Ware and Alexis Fisher.

Trauma Training from pg 1 someone has experienced trauma, traditional approaches to behavior support may not be effective. “ When we hear the word ‘trauma,’ we often think violence, natural disaster, etc., but there are many small ‘t’ impacts that can trigger a trauma response in someone, like bullying,” said Solanco special education director Chris Keeler. “These factors also influence how individuals may respond to strategies we try. Having a trauma-informed approach can help us be more effective in our support. When we focus our support to individuals from an understanding of other factors that may impact and influence how they react, how they communicate, (and) how they function, we begin to recognize the complexity - and humanity - of each of us and can form better, more effective supports.” The trauma-informed care session will run for the full two hours. Attendees may opt to attend two of the following three sessions instead: “Verbal Behavior,” “Structures and Routines to Reduce School Anxiety,” and “Evaluations, IEPs, and the Special Education Process.” Solanco life skills teachers Mikaela Masser and Mark Zuber will lead the session on verbal behavior. They will draw on the principles of applied behavior analysis and the theories of B.F. Skinner. In “Structures and Routines to Reduce School Anxiety,” Solanco itinerant autistic support teacher Michele Haverly will help attendees identify and develop structures and routines that may benefit their children in the school setting. Finally, Keeler will review how the special education process works in the school district and how parents and guardians are an important part of students’ teams. Evaluations and individualized education programs (IEPs) will be explained. For more information about the training sessions or to register to attend, readers may call Sheri Johnson in the Solanco special education department at 717-786-5625.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon is living up to its name with a busy spring schedule, which is keeping organizers on the run. GOTR will launch its spring season on Monday, March 16; the organization will hold a scholarship fundraising banquet on Friday, April 17; and the first GOTR summer camp program will be held from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26. This year’s season will include 100 teams in school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties using two different curriculums. The program, designed for girls ages 8 to 14, will teach about selfesteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals. The organization offers two curricula: GOTR, for girls in grades three through five, and Heart and Sole, designed for girls in sixth through eighth grades. Heart and Sole is facilitated by coaches, but led by the team members. The curriculum includes both discussion and journaling with a goal of giving girls the tools they need to navigate middle school and be successful in high school. “We are excited that in our 11th year in Lancaster and Lebanon, we have our biggest Heart and Sole season to date coming up,” said Jennifer West, who serves as program director for the organization. Girls who wish to take part in GOTR or Heart and Sole may visit www.gotrlancaster.org for more information. Readers who have questions about the program may contact West at jennifer.west@ girlsontherun.org. GOTR’s Kickin’ Up Kindness banquet will be held on Friday, April 17, at Brick Gables, 800 E. Newport Road, Lititz, beginning at 6:30 p.m. According to Sarah Yohe, development director for GOTR, the theme will be “An Evening of Empowerment,” and the goal will be to raise funds for the GOTR financial assistance program. Yohe said GOTR expects 200 guests, including community leaders, GOTR sponsors, and community members. The event will feature a buffet dinner, an open
bar, dancing to the sounds of Ink Vault, and a silent auction featuring at least 30 items, including a trip to Mexico, Barnstormers’ box tickets, and jewelry. Keynote speaker Meredith Jorgensen will speak on the topic “Empowering Girls,” and there will be a live appeal. “More than 53% of girls receive financial assistance,” explained Yohe. “This is a major annual fundraising event for scholarship needs.” Tickets to the banquet are on sale. Both table sponsorships and individual tickets are available. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit the previously mentioned website. The first Camp GOTR will be held from Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26, at the Greiner campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. In the mornings, girls will take part in curriculum activities led by the coaches. In the afternoons, the girls will attend experiential field trips to various businesses and other entities in Lancaster. The field trips will be led by women who are leaders in their fields. Among the organizations the girls will visit will be Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, the Lancaster Mounted Police K9 Unit, and UPMC Lititz, where they will witness a robotic surgery. They will also take a tour of Stevens College to learn about the programs offered there. Online registration for the camp opened at the previously mentioned website on Feb. 18. Camp registration will be open to 45 girls who are rising third- to fifth-graders. “We are excited to offer an opportunity outside the traditional programming options,” said Kylie Homan, program coordinator with GOTR. “It will be tons of fun.”

The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes well-known Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said. The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church, which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). After the guest musicians burst onto the scene and sing their first number, Sanders family patriarch Burl (Tim Strawser) introduces his wife, Vera (Nancy Snyder, who is also the production’s music director); their daughter June (Sarah Shirk); and their fraternal twins Denise (Sophie Hatalsky) and Dennis (Doug Hostetler). Burl’s brother, Stan-
ley (Ken Hess), has tagged along, as he was recently released from prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs. In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted. June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players. “It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said. Hatalsky and Hostetler are
also Promise Players newcomers. Additionally, Hatalsky is new to the area, and making the cast has eased the transition. “When I moved down, I didn’t know anybody, and (the cast) felt like a family,” she commented. Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton. Dorothy Smith plays accordion and appears as Myrtle to Doreen’s Maude, two unspeaking characters referenced in the script. For more information about “Smoke on the Mountain,” readers may visit http://lampcob.com/ promise-players or call the church at 717-464-2050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

adults who have genetic or other complex disorders. Founded in 1989, CSC provides services to about 1,100 active patients and is recognized as a world leader in translational and precision medicine. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. CSC supporters typically host several auctions throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio each year to raise funds for the clinic. A new fundraiser has been added to the calendar. Kumme Essa, named for the Pennsylvania Dutch phrase for “come eat,” will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl. The Pennsylvania Dutchinspired dinner will feature a twist on a traditional Amish wedding meal served familystyle by members of the Plain community in a restored barn. The evening will include remarks from CSC physicians and clients’ families as well as a live auction. Platinum-level sponsors will also have an opportunity to share a few comments during the program. There is a cost to attend Kumme Essa, and reservations are requested by Thursday, March 19. Special pricing for groups of eight or more people are available through the sponsorship packages. Tickets may be purchased at https://clinicfor specialchildren.org/e v e n t s / dinner/, or individuals may stop by the clinic. Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps League bands together those currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged so they may promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding all Marines, FMF corpsmen, and former Marines and FMF corpsmen and their widows and orphans. The Marine Corps League also preserves the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and observes the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular relevance to Marines. The Marine Corps provides aid through several programs. The Wounded Marines Program provides financial support, visits from Marine Corps League members, and off-site day trips to Marine Corps personnel at Naval medical centers and other locations. The City of Lancaster announced recently that the High Foundation and the Lancaster Community Foundation have awarded over $100,000 to the City of Lancaster Department of Neighborhood Engagement and the Community Action Partnership (CAP). The grants support several community benefit programs. The Lancaster Community Foundation awarded the Department of Neighborhood Engagement a $20,000 grant for the Neighborhood Leaders Academy program. The Neighborhood Leaders Academy is a training program that educates community members on the resources available to them through the City to help spur positive change in their neighborhoods. Participants are provided funds to be used to complete a project in their neighborhood that was developed throughout the program. The High Foundation awarded the Department of Neighborhood Engagement $30,000 for the Love Your Block program. Love Your Block is a minigrant program that allows community members to apply for funding to complete a project in their neighborhood that addresses blight remediation and litter reduction. Previously, the grant opportunities were limited to neighborhoods in the southeast section of Lancaster city. This grant will allow the program to expand throughout all of the city. The High Foundation also awarded the Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) $76,500 for its emergency housing program. In collaboration with the Department of Neighborhood Engagement and the City of Lancaster, this program ensures that housing is available for residents who are displaced by emergency situations.
