Little Hands Big Plans Sets Motorcycle Ride, Kids Day BY FRANCINE FULTON

lthough it will have a different look this year because of the pandemic, Little Hands Big Plans’ 13th annual motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation will take place on Sunday, April 25, at the Southern End Community Association’s park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the ride will begin at 1 p.m. Following the ride, Kids Day will take place in the park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. In a typical year, the group would meet at the park and then follow a scenic route to Wilmington, Del., where attendees would have an ice cream social with families at the Ronald McDonald House. This house provides lodging for families with children receiving treatment from Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Patients who were well enough also attended the social. This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and capacity restrictions at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Instead, the ride will be local. “We are doing a local scenic route and coming back to the park, where we will have a Kids Day for children with special needs (and their siblings) to try to make it a similar experience,” said event organizer Marsha Wagner, one of the family members who founded the Little Hands Big Plans charity. “We will have ice cream sundaes and little games for the kids to play, and a DJ will play music.” There will a cost per motorcycle to participate in the local ride. Food and event T-shirts will be on sale at the park. Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing. Proceeds will go to the Make-AWish Foundation via the Keith Wagner’s Mother’s Day Convoy account. Keith, Marsha’s father, will lead the annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy because he raised the most money for the foundation in 2019.

Dayspring To Welcome Metaxas And Cahn Remember America Series To Debut Interview Format BY ANN MEAD ASH

For 2021, Dayspring Christian Academy has chosen the theme “Return to the Foundation: Reviving the Seed of Our Nation” for its 11th Remember America Speaker Series event. Dayspring has also chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and

Payson Wagner enjoyed sitting on a trike during the 2020 Little Hands Big Plans motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year’s ride is set for April 25 and will include a Kids Day in SECA park.

Featured in the convoy will be the Make-A-Wish Angel trailer. The trailer is enclosed, and its sides are covered with stars and the names of Make-A-Wish children who have died. One of the names is Marsha’s daughter, Harley.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE “We are doing a local scenic route and coming back to the park, where we will have a Kids Day for children with special needs (and their siblings) to try to make it a similar experience.” “My daughter, Harley, was a MakeA-Wish child, but she passed away before she got her wish,” explained Marsha. “The (first) year my dad got first place, he asked to pull the trailer (so that) Harley would be able to be part of the convoy (in spirit). Now, every year the first truck has the opportunity to pull that trailer.”

In 2020, participants took part in a local covered bridge ride as part of the Little Hands Big Plans motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Little Hands Big Plans charity was formed by the Wagner family, which has adopted children with special needs and serious medical conditions. Marsha also lost another adopted daughter, Elaina. “We raise money for kids, and we have big plans,” Marsha said, explaining the name of the charity. “We didn’t want to call it ‘the Wagners.’ We

wanted something more.” For more information about the motorcycle ride and Kids Day, readers may call Marsha at 717-989-3998 or search for “Little Hands Big Plans” on Facebook. Those who would like to reserve an event T-shirt in advance may call or email Marsha at harleykarolynmom@aol.com. Orders are due by Friday, March 26.

Local Dealerships Join In Fight Against Hunger Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit

from the donation. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children. The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks

with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need, totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru. Local dealerships in central Pennsylvania that will help provide 99,000 meals to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include Faulkner Subaru Harrisburg, Apple Subaru and Lancaster County Motors Subaru. To join the effort, Subaru and its retailers invite consumers to make their own donation to Feeding America. Donations

will be directed to the food bank that serves the donor’s ZIP code, giving everyone an opportunity to help their communities. Visit www.feeding america.org/subarulovestohelp to learn more. The automaker’s donation to Feeding America is a part of the Subaru Loves to Help pillar, the community-focused pillar of the Subaru Love Promise. To learn more about Subaru Loves to Help and the community work Subaru does, visit www.subaru.com/help. Swift Middle School Posts Honor Roll

Remember America from pg 1 author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Lancaster County Convention Center. Tickets to the livestreamed event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the post-9/11 United States to ancient Israel, among other books. “(Cahn’s) books look at the biblical pattern the nations go through,” said Myers. “(The book of) Jeremiah (says that) ... God raises up or tears down (any nation) because of their alignment with His purposes or not.” Cahn is also the head of Hope of the World ministry, and he leads the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, N.J. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared,

noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the school and the nation. “Over the centuries many prayers have been prayed and many declarations decreed regarding the Gospel purpose for America,” he said. “ We are going to renew that and make sure the rising generations understand our heritage, so we can continue in what we believe (is)

Dom Flatt was Solanco’s lone representative at the PIAA Class 3A West “Super Regional” at Altoona High School Saturday, March 6. The senior lightweight made the most of this opportunity, punching his ticket to the State Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey with a second-place finish. The top four finishers from the East “Super Regional” and the top four from the West will compete at Hershey so Flatt is assured a top-eight state medal. “Dom had a great weekend,” lauded head coach Tony Mendez. “The competition is so tight you know things can go either way.” Flatt got off to a slow start Saturday morning. Holding a slim 2-1, second period lead over Plum’s Antonio Walker, Flatt used a pair of escapes and a takedown in the final seconds to secure a 6-3 quarter-finals decision. “Dom got off to a bit of a slow start,” said Mendez. “He arched his back pretty bad and needed an injury timeout but after that, he pushed the pace and won.” His semifinals opponent, Cael Nasdeo, of Williamsport, advanced with a 5-0 shutout but would not get past Flatt. Solanco’s 106-pounder led from start to finish in a 6-1 decision that vaulted him to the finals. “The Nasdeo kid was undefeated coming in,” noted Mendez. “He was a long, lanky kid for a 106-pounder. “Up 4-1, Dom chose down in the third period. He didn’t want to get caught. A win here was huge and secured a spot in the finals.” Clinging to a 1-0 second period advantage over Seneca Valley’s Tyler Chappell, Flatt gave up an escape with 1:34 left in the match and was taken down with nine seconds left, leaving him with a silver medal. LDHL Celebrates 60th Anniversary

R068633

February marked the 60year anniversary of Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL), a nonprofit that provides Lancaster County residents with interest-free student loans to help them obtain their higher education goals. As of Feb. 15, LDHL, which was formerly known as Dollars for Scholars of Lancaster County and Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Lancaster County, has provided more than $18 million to more than 13,000 students to help them attend more than 500 colleges and universities. Today, LDHL continues the mission established by its founders in 1961 to provide needs-based, interest-free loans to eligible students for up to four years with affordable repayment terms. Loan recipients have faithfully repaid those loans - even during the challenging season of the COVID-19 pandemic - so that LDHL could recycle the money to provide loans for future students. LDHL has been able to continue to increase the number of loans it provides over its six-decade history due to financial support from individuals and companies, including many past loan recipients and their parents who give back in gratitude. The organization has had a steadily growing number of Legacy-level donors - individuals, groups, or organizations that have donated at the $10,000 level, either as a one-time donation or over several years. Of the 253 loans LDHL provided for the 2020-21 academic year, 30 were Legacy loans. The Traditional Loan Program application period for the 2021-22 academic year will be open until Friday, April 30. The City of Lancaster, in partnership with the SoWe neighborhood group and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership, has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to create a street mural at the intersection of West Strawberry Street, South Mulberry Street and West Vine Street in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood. A call for artists has been issued to select an artist to work with the neighborhood to create an artwork that reflects a collective reimagining of the intersection. This project is supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative. Support is also being provided by Sherwin Williams. The grant will help the City of Lancaster to continue following its Ten-Year Plan for Public Art. The call for artists is open to all professional artists who live in southcentral Pennsylvania. Applicants must be age 18 or older and have proven experience with mural painting and public engagement. Submissions will be judged based on examples of relevant work, experience and recommendations. Experience making large-scale paintings and working collaboratively to complete projects is preferred, but not required. The project is in its early stages and set to progress through the summer of 2021 with a goal of installation in early fall. A steering committee including Cabbage Hill residents, arts professionals and a member of the Public Art Advisory Board has been established. Planners and engineers from the Department of Public Works will be involved in solving design problems alongside artists and neighbors. Interested artists can apply at https://form.jot form.com/210396571244152. Submissions will be accepted through Monday, March 22. For additional information about other projects in the Asphalt Art Initiative, visit http://asphaltart .bloomberg.org.
