Thrifted Fashions Will Hit The Runway Troop 91 To Host Spaghetti Dinner By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Proudly running his hand down a finely striped tie, New Hope Community Life Ministry executive director Neil Uniacke boasted, “I’m wearing thrifted threads.” “So am I, even my shoes,” added Beth Tyson, manager of the Community Closet Thrift Store, which is part of New Hope. Proceeds from the Community Closet, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, support New Hope’s mission to provide quality counseling for a variety of needs with a faith-based perspective regardless of the client’s ability to pay. The ministry is headquartered at 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville. The thrift store also donates a portion of its proceeds to other local nonprofit organizations. “We make a serious effort to put out very nice items,” Tyson said. See Fashion Show pg 4

Memorial Day weekend, and a pancake breakfast is offered in the fall. Proceeds from the fundraisers help Troop 91 offset costs of activities. That is important because the troop goes on at least one outing a month. “We try to keep the pricing level for each (troop) event,” Althoff remarked, adding that funds are also used to purchase equipment to ensure the Scouts are camping safely and efficiently. The troop ventures into several states to go camping, but members also spend time closer to home. The annual spring campout always ends at Drumore Park, with the troop members spending several hours cleaning up the park and then planning for the next year of Scouting. Additionally, the troop usually participates in Scouting for Food, but this year, the group collected donations for the food bank at Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in February. The collection was held in conjunction with Scout Sunday at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, and it provided much-needed supplies during what tends to be a dry period at the food bank, Althoff said. Each summer, Troop 91 takes a special trip to a high adventure camp. Last year, the group went to Florida Sea Base, and this year, the Scouts will be going to Philmont. “It’s a good experience for them,” Althoff commented. “Sea Base was water-based; they went sailing and caving. This summer, they’ll camp along the Appalachian Trail.” Currently, Troop 91 has 25 Scouts in fifth grade through age 18, one Scoutmaster, 16 assistant Scoutmasters, and eight committee members. Althoff

noted that the number of adults supporting the troop is significant because it enables them to share responsibilities so the Scoutmaster can focus on the individual troop members. “We want boys to make their ranks and work toward becoming Eagle Scouts,” Althoff said. She noted that Troop 91 has produced nine Eagle Scouts in the past two years. “Some of our

Eagle Scouts still come back and help out,” she added. New members are welcome in Troop 91, and anyone interested may visit a meeting. Meetings are held every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the CLPC Family Life Center. For more information about Troop 91 or the spaghetti dinner, readers may call or text Althoff at 717-278-4735.

Fashion Show from pg 1 Uniacke concurred, relating that he had bought two brandnew dress shirts still in their plastic packaging at the Community Closet the previous week. “We have an incredible gem of a thrift store,” he said. “You can save a lot of money and get really nice stuff.” While the racks and shelves are full of items in good condition, Tyson has been holding back a few select pieces in preparation for the ministry’s annual fashion show. The event will be held on Saturday, April 6, at Refton Brethren in Christ

Church, 110 Church St., Refton. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and the buffet will open for dinner around 5:45 p.m. A silent auction will run during the evening, with additional opportunities to win door prizes and themed baskets. Tyson has been setting aside donations for the auction, and sponsors have contributed other things. Auction highlights will include gift certificates to local businesses and attractions, jewelry, handbags, handmade chocolate, local designer pottery, a rhinestoneencrusted domed cake plate, a

hat tree, and a trip to the state Capitol with Rep. Bryan Cutler. The highlight of the event, however, will be the fashion show. Tyson has planned for four groups of clothing, and the names of prize and auction winners will be announced between each group. An emphasis will be placed on spring wardrobes. The categories of attire will include casualwear, business/dressy, formalwear in a spectrum of colors, and bridal. Tyson noted that four bridal gowns have been donated to the Community Closet recently, and she plans to showcase them on April 6. “They’re not $4,000 gowns, but with a little bit of embellishment, the practical bride might do very well with (one of them),” Tyson remarked, noting that the gowns have been cleaned. One young lady has already claimed one for her own wedding, but it will still appear in the fashion show. Practically everything that will be worn in the show has been donated to the thrift store. Tyson would like to borrow one very specific item, however. “I’m looking for a pair of indigo blue cowboy boots around a size 8,” she said. “We have a bit of a cowgirl flavor (for at least one outfit).” Close to 15 models appeared in the show last year, and Tyson anticipates approximately that many this year. New Hope counselor and board member Elaine Campbell will reprise her role on the runway. Other women and men of distinct ages and sizes will participate in the show. Tyson praised one woman in her 80s for her ongoing support of New Hope and her flair as a model. “She’s a real showstopper,” Tyson commented. Tickets are required for admission to the fashion show, and they must be purchased by Monday, April 1. Folks may call New Hope at 717-786-2802 to order tickets. Uniacke noted that while he plans to attend the fashion show, he will be there as a New Hope supporter, not as an employee. Beginning April 1, Uniacke will be working as a bereavement counselor with Hospice & Community Care in York County. He has led New Hope for seven-anda-half years. The board of directors is accepting applications for Uniacke’s successor. For more information about New Hope and the Community Closet, readers may visit www.newhopeministry.info.

Eight partner community organizations will initially receive the training, including For the Love of a Veteran in Hanover, the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, Warwick School District in Lititz, and the We Matter Coalition in Hershey. The grant-funded training

will be offered in addition to WellSpan Philhaven’s ongoing Mental Health First Aid and QPR training, which is particularly geared toward suicide prevention. WellSpan Philhaven has received a national grant to expand its mental health and suicide prevention training to groups that include veterans’ advocates, school employees, criminal justice providers, and social service agencies in southcentral Pennsylvania. The $375,000 grant came from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. WellSpan Philhaven was one of just two mental health organizations in the state to receive a Mental Health Awareness Training grant from SAMHSA in 2018. The other one is NAMI in Erie County. WellSpan Philhaven will use the funds to expand two of its training programs: Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). That should be a good time.” The contestants represent a wide variety of interests, with athletes and actors, musicians and mathematicians sharing the stage. The talents are varied and include a saxophone solo, an original Christian rap, a lipsynced song, stand-up comedy routines, and dance routines. The beachwear segment will also highlight the contestants’ personalities. In addition to board shorts, there will be some unexpected outfits. “They’re very creative, elaborate. They’re thinking outside the box,” Lorrie said. “They’re taking it to (another) level.” The winner of the Mr. Solanco pageant will receive a free tuxedo rental for the prom. “Post prom provides a fun, safe, substance-free evening of games and prizes for graduating seniors and their guests,” Lorrie said. “With (the temptation of) private parties with alcohol and (the possibility of) drunk driving, post prom really does give (prom-goers) a safe place to be, which is so important.” Lorrie noted that although fundraising is lagging by $9,000, the post prom committee is committed to stretching every dollar it has. “We’ll still hold it, and we’ll still make it wonderful,” she said. “There will be a lot to do. It will be very fun.” A number of students are supporting the post prom committee’s efforts by helping to produce the Mr. Solanco pageant. Seniors Aubree Roop and Tyson Grant will serve as the masters of ceremonies, and other students will staff the stage crew, coordinate the costumes, and run the sound, lights, and video. 2018 Solanco graduate Kara Woerth is

Holstein Club from pg 1 The Lancaster County Junior Holstein Club will hold its third annual chicken dinner at Little Britain Mennonite School, 352 Nottingham Road (Route 272), Quarryville, on Saturday, March 30, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The meal will include barbecued chicken, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, applesauce, dessert and beverages. The event will also feature a silent auction of items, including flowers, feed, pictures, baskets, gift cards and more. The members of the Lancaster County Junior Holstein Club competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention in February to qualify to represent the state at the National Holstein Convention. The senior dairy bowl team of Amber Pownall, Roy Bramm, Caroline Arrowsmith, and Madison Weaver placed first in the competition with no losses. The junior dairy bowl team of Alexa Hoffman, Madelyn Hoffman, A.J. Wanner, and Olivia Bramm placed first with one loss. Only the first-place dairy bowl teams are eligible to attend the national convention. The Jeopardy competition featured the top three contestants in

each age group. Jacob Bramm placed second in Junior Jeopardy, and Nicole Arrowsmith placed first in Intermediate Jeopardy. A price has been set for eat-in or takeout meals for adults. A separate price has been set for eat-in meals for children ages 10 and under. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Attendees are encouraged to make reservations, as a limited number of dinners for walk-ins will be available. To reserve a meal or donate items for the silent auction, readers may contact Betsy Pownall at 717-468-4631. Proceeds will go toward funding for 10 members to attend the National Holstein Convention in Appleton, Wis., in June. Pictured on front:

Lancaster County, along with 12 other southeastern Pennsylvania counties, is currently under quarantine for the spotted lanternfly. All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations, and a spotted lanternfly permit is required for any business working within and/or moving goods in and out

of the quarantine zone. This includes farm businesses such as nurseries, greenhouses, woodworking shops, and others that sell materials that could contain eggs or young or adult spotted lanternflies. Each affected business needs to have a supervisor, a manager, or the owner complete the required training and take a 20question exam. Free online training, including the examination, can be found at https://extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training. A series of free training and testing sessions is being offered in Lancaster County for businesses that do not have access to the online training. The dates and locations of these on-site sessions are Thursday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm Store, 324 Glenbrook Road, Leola; Friday, March 29, at 9 a.m. at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster; Wednesday, April 3, at 9 a.m. at Gideon King Hardware, 466 Elam Road, Kinzer; Wednesday, April 17, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm Store; and Wednesday, April 24, at 9 a.m. at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Road, Paradise. People interested in taking one of these free on-site trainings need to register by contacting Brandon Boyer at 717-772-5220 or brandonboy@pa.gov.

Flatt Receives Character Award Solanco’s Dominic Flatt won his first Lancaster-Lebanon League title this past January as an undersized 106 pounder, weighing in at 99.5 pounds. At the League tournament, he began a friendship with two brothers, Jaxon and Cooper Brubaker, who have Saul-Wilson Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, characterized by small stature. The brothers are two of just 13 in the world with this condition. “Upon receiving his first-place medal at the tournament, Dominic gave his medal to Jaxon Brubaker realizing Jaxon would never get the chance to wrestle,” recounted Solanco head coach Tony Mendez. Many individuals in the wrestling

community became aware of this story, including Clair Beiler, owner of Lancaster Awards & Apparel, who supplies the league wrestling tournament with all the awards. “Mr. Beiler wanted to donate a new

championship medal to Dominic for his incredible act of kindness,” continued Mendez. “He was presented with this award, the ‘Extemporaneous Character Award’ at the LancasterLebanon League All-Star banquet on

Monday (3/11). As I suspected, Dominic placed the medal around Cooper Brubaker’s neck so he had a medal to match his brothers. Once again, showing his incredible character as a wrestler and person.”

David and Karin Holder, hosts of “Raised Hunting,” which has been broadcast on the Discovery and Outdoor channels, will be the speakers at the Hunting With Purpose Outdoor Expo. “The Holders have a family that they have ‘raised’ hunting,” explained Brandon Fisher, lead pastor with Keystone Church, which is sponsoring the event. “Their faith in Jesus Christ has been an important cornerstone to their family and their view of the outdoors.” The Holders will be one facet of the church’s first Outdoor Expo, scheduled to be

held at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, on Friday, March 22. Doors to the expo will open at 6 p.m. The Holders are slated to speak at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments, as well as barbecue, will be served, and a variety of door prizes associated with hunting and other outdoor activities will be given away. The Holders, who hail from Winterset, Iowa, have two sons. David and Karin state that they are Christian outdoorsmen who use hunting as a platform to teach their family ethics and values. Their goal is to spread their love for Jesus to their community through their love of the outdoors. Up to 10 area vendors and manufacturers of outdoor equipment will be featured at the expo. They will include those selling archery equipment suitable for hunting, deer feed suppliers, taxidermists, fishing and waterfowl guides, and those selling other outdoor gear and supplies. According to Fisher, the expo is the brainchild of church members Harold Bare and Wil Esbenshade. “(Bare and Esbenshade) have a desire to see the Gospel shared with everyone in our community,” explained Fisher, who added that the pair discussed areas where that they felt there

was common ground between the church and the community. “The outdoors is one of those places,” said Fisher. “They personally have a love of the outdoors and a love of hunting and fishing, and that resonates with a lot of people they come into contact with in the community.” Fisher and Lauren Smoker, communications coordinator for the church, emphasized the inclusivity of the event. “This is not (strictly) a men’s event,” said Fisher. “This is for the whole family,” added Smoker. Smoker also noted that the Holders are passionate about living out their faith in the outdoors as a family. There is a cost to attend the event, and registration is necessary. Overall attendance will be limited to 450 persons. Readers who wish to register may visit www.key stonechurch.org/sportsmen. Pictured on front:
