MOPS Auction Will Support North Star Initiative By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Memberships to local attractions, restaurant gift certificates, photography packages, massage sessions, and house-cleaning services are among the items the coordinators of the annual Faith Reformed MOPS auction are hoping to receive from donors. “ We’re trying to appeal to busy moms,” explained co-coordinator Hillary Prickett. “I would bid on (housecleaning services) in 2 seconds. It’s my least-favorite chore.” The auction will be held during the MOPS group’s usual meeting time on Friday, April 5, starting at 9 a.m. at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church (FRPC), 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. While meetings typically end at 11 a.m., this special event is expected to continue until 11:30 a.m. A silent auction will open at 9 a.m., and a
live auction will start a half-hour later. Donations already received for the auction include several baby quilts, home decor, a date-night meal prepared by a personal chef, child care, collections of children’s books, gift baskets, hair products, fair-trade jewelry, handbags, a photography package, restaurant and coffee shop gift cards, and even a year’s dues for MOPS membership. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment for auction purchases. All of the proceeds will go to North Star Initiative, which operates the Harbor Restoration Program, a traumainformed, strength-based residential program intentionally designed to treat the needs of female survivors of sex trafficking. Following a needs assessment, an individualized care plan is created for each client that may include life skills classes, access to trauma therapy and support, and planning See Faith Reformed MOPS pg 7
The Great Book Swap Aims To Encourage Reading By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The memes about readers who hoard books are legion on social media. It can be difficult to part with a book, especially if the story is particularly gripping. Solanco High School librarian Emily Dawley hopes that the members of the high school community will want to share their favorite - and their unwanted - titles during the annual Great Book Swap event. Every high school student, teacher, or staff member who brings in a book through Monday, April 1, will receive a ticket that may be redeemed during the swap, which will be held during school hours on Tuesday through Thursday, April 2 to 4, in the library. “The kids See The Great Book Swap pg 4

Inspiring Wonder, Raising Funds By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“I like sparking wonder in the hearts and minds of our audiences. Wonder is the moment that takes your breath away, that moment when time seems to stand still and anything seems possible,” said illusionist Brett Myers. All of the Master Gardeners were given an opportunity to include tidbits about their own gardens in the event booklet, a copy of which every attendee will receive along with seeds, information, and other resources. Symposium attendees may visit the vendors during the breaks between sessions. Jourdan Cole of the Garden Media Group will kick things off by reviewing eight recent garden trends that encourage a love of nature. “People have been saying they’re looking forward to this (session), List said. Recently retired horticulture extension educator and Master Gardener Annette MaCoy will talk all about weeds and how to control them. List praised MaCoy’s knowledge base and noted that she has trained many of the Master Gardeners in Lancaster County. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower
Preserve executive director Miles Arnott will discuss the life cycles of early spring plants and their ecological benefit. “We don’t often use them (in planned gardens) because they’re not around very long, but they add a taste of spring when we’re yearning for it, List said. Kelly Gill is a pollinator conservation specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and a partner biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. She will talk about native bees and their habitat needs, a topic that she frequently discusses during her role helping farmers, landowners, and others implement Farm Bill practices to conserve pollinators and other beneficial insects. In a second session, Gill will talk about designing and managing pollinator-friendly landscapes. “Even a pot on a patio will help pollinators, said Master Gardener and symposium committee member Dyan Eisenberger. “They can act as way stations for insects and birds during migration. Breakfast and lunch, as well as entries in the drawing for more than 100 prizes, will be included in the cost of attendance, and folks should register by Sunday, April 7, by visiting https://extension.psu.edu/ wagner-garden or by calling the Penn State Registration Service at 877-345-0691 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, readers may contact Master Gardener coordinator Lois Miklas at lim2@psu.edu or 717-394-6851.

STEM Team Advances To States
The Solanco High School STEM team, consisting of (from left) Jenna Brown, Gabi Dolan, Patrick Hodgson, Tim Fetterman and Jack Hertzler, won the regional tournament in the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Competition. For the second year in a row, Solanco’s high school science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) team has won the regional tournament in the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Competition, and it will now advance to the state tournament, to be held in May. “Their winning project was called CLAD: Classroom Lockdown Assistance
Device,” Solanco teacher and STEM coach Caley Roark said. “The CLAD system is a remotely deployable device designed to secure and reinforce classroom doors without putting teachers or students in harm’s way. Solanco High School Resource Officer Dilworth served as a community partner and provided expert advice in its creation.”
Solanco has competed in the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM competition for two years and has won the regional contest both years. Last year’s team developed a spinal protection system for athletes, and it earned a People’s Choice Award at the state competition for a device most likely to lead to a medical breakthrough.

On April 4, 1989, a small pediatric practice was founded in Strasburg by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline Morton, along with concerned members of the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, to provide care to children with genetic or other complex disorders. The following year, a post-andHomemade beam-style building was raised by Baked Goods Plain volunteers at 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, and the Clinic for For Sale! Special Children (CSC) was off and running. In the three decades since its founding, the CSC has developed from its modest roots into an internationally recognized leader and innovator in rare disease research and care. who are really into it will want to be here at 7 a.m. on Tuesday,” Dawley remarked. There is no limit to the number of books anyone can donate, nor a limit to the corresponding number of tickets they receive for their contribution. “I’ve had a kid bring in 30 books,” Dawley recalled. The swap is a great way for readers to obtain new titles without spending any money. Some folks even take the opportunity to choose books for gifts for loved ones, decreasing the number of books on their own shelves but increasing the literary happiness in others’ lives. Dawley will keep track of the tickets. At the end of the swap, any tickets not redeemed will be forfeited. Most of the unclaimed

disease was only known for a handful of disorders. Today, by utilizing CSC’s on-site biochemistry and genetics laboratory, which has been managed by Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger since 1998, more than 300 disease-causing genetic changes have been identified. In addition, in the 30 years since CSC’s founding, its staff members have published more than 110 peer-reviewed research papers, fueled by close internal collaboration between clinical and laboratory staff and effective cooperation with academic, scientific, and clinical partners. To commemorate the anniversary, the clinic will be selling a limited number of copies of “30 Stories for 30 Years,” a book that features first-hand accounts written by clinic clients and families, as well as “Our Story in Newsletters,” a compilation of every clinic newsletter that has been published through 2018. These publications may be purchased in person at the clinic or by visiting https://clinicfor specialchildren.org/contact/store/. Proceeds from the sale of the books will aid the CSC in its efforts to
provide affordable, cutting-edge care for clients. As a nonprofit organization, the CSC is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. Additionally, past and current clients and their families, as well as collaborators of the clinic, are invited to attend a 30th anniversary celebration drop-in between 3 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Guests may walk through the clinic and learn how it was established, what projects are being worked on, and what its future may hold. Mementos from the clinic’s history will be displayed, refreshments will be served, and copies of the anniversary books will be for sale. Admission to the celebration will be free of charge, but donations will be welcome. Anyone interested in providing any in-kind or monetary donations to cover the cost of the event is invited to contact Julia Martin at jmartin@clinicforspecial children.org or 717-286-4288. where children with complex genetic diseases can receive the primary pediatric care they need in an accessible, comfortable, and informed environment. The clinic’s primary but not exclusive focus is on treating the uninsured Amish and Mennonite communities of southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2018, CSC provided care to more than 1,000 active patients, and in its 30-year history, the clinic has treated patients from 42 states and 17 countries. “Caring for children with special needs is the work of a community, and for three decades, the clinic has bound us together in this common purpose,” said Dr. Kevin Strauss, the clinic’s medical director. “The CSC’s mission embodies an idea that challenges each one of us to contribute; only together can we find new ways to enrich lives, alleviate suffering, and create hope. On the eve of the CSC’s 30th anniversary, we are grateful to all of those who have joined hands with us in this effort, and, in so doing, become part of a very special family.” In 1989, the genetic cause of

books will be given to students in the building who were unable to participate in the swap. A few titles will be stored until next year’s swap, but Dawley said she does not like to keep a large inventory from year to year. Dawley has set guidelines for books in the swap. Fiction, nonfiction, test prep, cookbooks, and more in good condition and appropriate for high school students to read will be accepted for the swap. Books for preschoolers and elementary students will be given to the Solanco Literacy Initiative and will not count toward donors’ ticket totals. “Fantasy is always a big draw, as are graphic novels,” Dawley said. “Teens also like science fiction and contemporary fiction.” While community members may not receive books from the swap, they are welcome to donate books for the event. Volumes may be dropped off at the school office, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dawley is hopeful that participation in this year’s event will greatly eclipse last year’s. Because the library was being
remodeled during the time of the 2018 swap, Dawley considered not offering the event. She persevered, however, holding the swap in a computer room, which was not visible enough, she said. This year, the swap will be held in the main library, where students like to congregate throughout the school day. “So many kids come here now,” Dawley remarked. Since the remodel, she has expanded the fiction collection, but there are fewer nonfiction titles available. “Students are doing more of their research online,” Dawley suggested. “We still offer a lot of really good options.” The school offers other quality ways to access books. Readers of digital materials may borrow ebooks and audiobooks through the school version of the OverDrive app. Print materials may be obtained from libraries across the state through interlibrary loan. “Print books are still really popular among our students,” Dawley said. For more information about the Great Book Swap, readers may email Dawley at emily_dawley@ solancosd.org.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization committed to serving people with disabilities in Pennsylvania, has been accredited by the Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of nonprofit programs that train and place assistance dogs. ADI’s ob jectives are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of assistance dog acquisition, training and partnership; facilitate communication and learning among member programs; and educate the public on the benefits of assistance dogs and ADI membership. Assistance dog organizations that pass ADI’s accreditation process become ADI Accredited Member programs and are assessed every five years to ensure they meet the highest standards in the industry. In 2018, UDS moved its corporate headquarters to a new location, allowing for substantial growth in its service dogs program. UDS Service Dogs specializes in dogs to assist individuals, including veterans with mobility disabilities. The dogs are trained to provide services such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, helping to remove jackets and socks, retrieving and delivering items, and pushing elevator buttons. They also provide affection and companionship. UDS Service Dogs also trains dogs to assist individuals with autism. These dogs’ job is to help with pressure, interrupting behavior, and alerting or finding an adult. The UDS Service Dogs program is growing and looking for new clients to match with the specially trained dogs. UDS Service Dogs has also begun placing dogs in educational facilities. Within the past year, 15 dogs have been placed in central Pennsylvania. Facility dogs help engage students during school, with the goal of helping them remain focused on their work, thereby creating a viable learning environment. Facility dogs are also intended to promote positive feelings and to help calm fear and anxiety. For more information, readers may contact Lori Breece at lorib@ud services.org or visit www.udservices.org.

Other team members included attorneys Danielle Drumm and Shane Sollenberger, witness Brandon Daniel, and paralegal Sadie Kauffman. ter for Grief & Loss, Camp Chimaqua is an overnight weekend camp for children ages 6 through 12 who have a loved one who has died. The camp aims to help children explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build selfconfidence. Group and individual activities will be incorporated to help children learn how to express their feelings and share
memories of their loved ones. Campers enjoy fun activities such as swimming and making s’mores around a campfire, as well as participating in griefrelated activities. A trained, volunteer adult buddy is paired with each child for companionship, support, and supervision throughout the weekend. There is a nominal cost for the
registration fee, and financial assistance is available. Applications are due by Friday, May 10, and children will meet with a counselor to determine if the camp best meets their needs. Space is limited. For details and registration, readers may call 717-391-2413 or visit www.hospiceandcommunity care.org and click on Kids and Teens Support.

and tools for safe, healthy, independent living. This is the second year that Faith Reformed MOPS has supported North Star through its auction. The 2018 auction generated $2,951, and the coordinators hope to exceed that this year. “Last year, we chose North Star Initiative because MOPS International’s theme was ‘Free Indeed,’” Prickett said. “Helping women come out of sex trafficking was (a) perfect (fit for the theme). The ministry (North Star) does is so incredibly needed. We didn’t think twice about partnering with them for a second year.” Child care will be available during the auction free of charge, but registration is required by Monday, April 1. To register their youngsters, readers may email andysusanyoung@ yahoo.com. Faith Reformed MOPS meets from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first and third Fridays of every month from September through May at FRPC. New members are always welcome. There is a cost for membership, which includes access to parenting resources, devotionals, newsletters from MOPS International, and lots of support. Prickett noted that during meetings, mothers of preschoolers work on crafts and other creative projects, engage in a faith-based curriculum, and socialize. There are even playdates and Moms’ Night Out events. “It’s a good place to meet other moms and do parenting together,” Prickett remarked. For more information about Faith Reformed MOPS or to contribute to the auction, readers may email Prickett at hfprickett@ gmail.com.

LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a presentation about “Surrogate First Ladies” on Thursday, April 4, in Ryder Hall. A speaker’s reception will take place at 4 p.m., followed by the main presentation at 4:30 p.m. Dr. Katie Sibley will be the speaker. Beginning with Martha Jefferson Randolph, Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, there have been a handful of women who have performed the duties of White House hostess though they were not married to the president. These women are sometimes acknowledged as “surrogate First Ladies,” but they are often not considered official First Ladies, though many served important roles in presidential administrations. Included in the lineup of surrogate First Ladies is Harriet Lane, niece of President James Buchanan, who is considered an “official” First Lady. Lane acted as Buchanan’s hostess and was a highly visible public figure. Other nonspousal relatives who took on the duties of the First Lady include Emily Donelson and Sarah Yorke Jackson,

ored to be asked to headline the show with magicians whom I’ve looked up to since I was a teenager. It truly is a dream come true for me,” Brett remarked. “I know that each Rotary sponsors a different community organization. I am happy to be a part of these shows because I know they are making a difference in the communities they serve.” The Comedy and Magic Spectacular is the largest annual fundraiser of the Rotary Club of Lancaster South. The proceeds from ticket sales are used to fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg, Penn Manor, and Solanco high schools, and the club also contributes to youth programming at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA and to other community needs. Most recently, the group donated $5,000 each to capital campaigns run by the West Lampeter Township Community Foundation and the Southern End Community Association. “The biggest challenge that every illusionist faces is getting the audience to care about what you’re doing. At first, I thought it was fooling people. I thought that as long as no one knew how trick was done, I was good. However, no one likes to be fooled,” Brett commented. “How then do you take an art form that is based upon deception and make it enjoyable? You master the art of entertainment and by making the performance about how good you make the audience feel. You inspire them to dream that anything is possible, to experience childlike wonder again, and to be surprised and delighted by what you’re doing.” Folks who would like to experience all of that and more may purchase tickets for the Comedy and Magic Spectacular at www.lancsouthrotary.org or at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lancaster.

caster. Brett grew up in Chambersburg and began learning illusions as a hobby when he was 14. He first performed for his parents and then for classmates and friends. As a high school senior, Brett began partnering with churches and other nonprofit organizations to use illusions as a way to share a message of love and hope. By his mid-20s, Brett was performing full time, both in the United States and around the world. “We partnered with organizations like HOPE International to help raise funds to make poverty disappear,” Brett quipped. Labrina brings comedic talents and dynamic performing to the Myerses’ act, Brett said. Labrina grew up in Tennessee, and the couple met at a magic conference in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Brett’s magic mentor, Duane Laflin, had hired Labrina to help him with his magic theater shows. When Brett arrived for the conference, Laflin’s wife, Mary, played matchmaker. Brett and Labrina balance a career and raising a family. The couple has been performing regularly, and for nine months in each of the past four years, they have performed their Magic & Wonder Show at a theater in Bird-in-Hand. On April 13, the couple will present part of their show from the 2018 season. “The audience can expect to see a wide array of illusions that surprise and delight,” Brett promised. “They can expect to see people appear and disappear right before their eyes. They’ll see our full cast show with dazzling costumes.” Other performers during the Comedy and Magic Spectacular will include innovative magician Tony Chapek, Cuban illusionist Jarol Martin, and master of ceremonies R.G. Smith. Smith will host a game of bingo after intermission, and each attendee will

innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’” The keynote speaker for the conference will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Anderson struggled to succeed in school, but he now holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his address, “Diamond in the Rough,” Anderson will reveal how challenges can be used to develop endurance and previously concealed abilities within educators and students. He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage at-risk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Attendees may visit sponsors’ tables and enter to win prizes from local businesses.
Jeremy Anderson Lunch will be provided and, along with breakfast, is included in the cost of attendance. Act 48 hours will be awarded for the conference. In order to ensure that the conference is accessible to anyone with interest, a special rate has been set for parents, substitute teachers, and university students, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Wednesday, May 1. Registrations and payment must be received by Friday, June 7. Folks may register by visiting www.iu13.org. For more information, readers may contact Swisher at 717-606-1878 or linda_swisher@iu13.org.

“We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at LampeterStrasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wide-ranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions. A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol prevention and current drug trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention. “Two sessions that we are very
excited about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.” All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” “When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through

Mozart worked through the night to complete the overture. Today, “Don Giovanni” is a staple of opera repertoire. Chopin was a conservatory graduate of 19 when he composed his Piano Concerto No. 2, one of two piano concertos Chopin wrote to showcase his virtuosity. Chopin was embarking on a move from Poland to Paris to further his career, and it was customary for musicians to compose a work that displayed their talents in preparation for auditions. The concertos feature elements of Chopin’s signature style of romanticism. Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony was inspired by his visit to the ruined chapel of Holyrood Castle near Edinburgh during a grand tour of Scotland when the composer was in his early 20s and already an accomplished musician. After visiting the castle, Mendelssohn detailed the adventure in his journal and followed the entry with 10 measures of music, which later became the main theme of his third symphony. The piece took

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present “Mozart & Mendelssohn” on Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, at 3 and 8 p.m. at Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The concert will consist of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 bracketed by Mozart’s “Overture to Don Giovanni” and Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony. Guest pianist Yevgeny Yontov will be featured in the performance. The opera “Don Giovanni” was commissioned in late 1787 as Mozart was winding down from the success of “The Marriage of Figaro,” which he had written with famed Italian librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. For “Don Giovanni,” Da Ponte, who was overbooked at the time, adapted an existing libretto about Don Juan. Mozart and Da Ponte worked at breakneck speed to meet the deadline for the first performance on Oct. 29. On the evening of Oct. 28, Da Ponte pointed out they were missing an overture, so
