Tips For Marketing With Websites BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “ Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County See Marketing Tips pg 3
BRR offers summer fun for children.
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
“Camp is open!” exclaimed Peter Fiorello, executive director of Black Rock Retreat (BRR). Located on 100 acres of woodland in southern Lancaster County, BRR is a nonprofit Christian organization that has been running since 1954. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, BRR was forced to cancel the first three weeks of camp. “Once we reopened, we served roughly 600 kids with no cases (of COVID), which was a miracle,” said
Fiorello. “Parents were begging us to stay open.” Camp will be open for eight weeks this summer beginning Sunday, June 13. Overnight camp will be available for students in grades two through 12, and day camp will be open to children in grades one through six . BRR offers financial assistance and awards scholarships every year so that underprivileged children can go to camp. Registration opened in December 2020. “Registration is filling up, which is great to see!” said Fiorello. “In
spite of everything, we had a great summer last year, so we’re hoping to go back to normal in some capacity this summer.” For the first time ever, BRR has partnered with the semiprofessional Christian soccer team the Charlotte Eagles. BRR will host a soccer day camp this summer for children in grades one through eight from Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. “The Charlotte Eagles do ministry work in the States and overseas, so we’re really fortunate that some of the trainers will come here to work
with the kids,” said Fiorello. Fiorello has served as executive director of BRR for almost four years. Some of his main goals include casting vision for the future, raising funds, and creating new ministry opportunities. “I’ve been in camp ministry as an executive directort for over 20 years,” noted Fiorello. “I started in upstate New York at a small camp and served with Youth For Christ, where I did inner city work. I was also in New Hampshire at a camp for seven years, and then I came here.”

ence and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process. Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.” Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results. Other resources for business owners include www.canva.com for creating attractive visuals and www.answerthepublic.com for discovering what questions potential customers are asking. “(Go here) if you want to create helpful (website) content but don’t know where to start,” Grim advised. Readers may also visit https://lancaster.score.org and www.bootstraplocal.com for free resources. Those with questions may email Grim at adam@bootstraplocal.com.

With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. “I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said. Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented. “Every business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Addie Scott, a swimmer, joined Dom Flatt, a wrestler, as Solanco’s only representatives in recent PIAA State competitions. Scott competed in the PIAA Class 3A swimming championships at Cumberland Valley High School on March 20. The sophomore, a 12th seed in the 200 freestyle, placed ninth with a 1:52.83, just off her seed time of 1:52.8 and just missing a top eight medal. Scott also qualified for states as a freshman, competing in the 200. Later on March 20, Scott hit the water again, this time in the 100 freestyle. She was seeded ninth with a 51.89 and placed 12th overall with a 52.02. “I didn’t PR in either event, but I was very close,” Scott said. “I was happy with my performance. It was my goal to make it to states, but it would have been nice to medal.”

Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individu-

Recognized for its Classroom Heroes program, the Lancaster Bar Association is one of 20 local bar associations in Pennsylvania honored this year for sponsoring projects that improve the legal profession, justice system, or community. With the added stress of COVID-19, teachers have taken on a new level of responsibility. In recognition of the ever-increasing number of worries and concerns teachers have for both their students and their families and in an effort to alleviate one potentially significant source of stress, the Lancaster Bar Association and the Lancaster Law Foundation have offered free phone consultations and signing appointments with an attorney to provide local teachers and their spouses with living wills and health care powers of attorney. As of Feb. 25, 108 local teachers and their spouses had taken part in this free service. For more details, readers may visit www.pabar.org.
