Public Servants Receive “Stop The Bleed” Donation Quarryville borough employees recently added to their arsenal of emergency response tools with the donation of 10 Stop the Bleed kits and the training needed to place them in service. Each Stop the Bleed kit contains a tourniquet, medical gloves, medical shears, compressed gauze, an emergency bandage, and a permanent marker. The kit is designed to help first responders quickly stanch the flow of blood, as a person who is bleeding severely can die within five minutes due to loss of blood. Members of the borough’s road crew and the Quarryville Police Department received Stop the Bleed training. Stop the Bleed, a program of the American College of Surgeons, is designed to teach members of the public how to react to and halt life-threatening bleeding. The kits and the training were donated by Rogue Enterprises Public Safety Training Company (REPSTC), a locally
owned and operated business that specializes in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of an automatic external defibrillator, and related training. REPSTC also offers training in a wide range of topics and skills to public safety agencies relations to certification and continued education. REPSTC training director Edward Burrell Jr., a nationally certified paramedic, coordinated the Stop the Bleed donation, working with Quarryville borough manager Scott Peiffer and Police Chief Clark Bearinger. “With this training and equipment, borough employees are better prepared to respond in an emergency - be it an active assailant, vehicle accident, or other traumatic injury event - to save a life,” Burrell commented. “We applaud Quarryville borough management and employees for making the effort to be better prepared.”
Rogue Enterprises Public Safety Training Company training director Edward Burrell Jr. (second from left) joined Quarryville borough and police department employees (from left) Ron Munro, Scott Peiffer, Clark Bearinger, Cheryl Thompson, and Chris Dilworth to mark the donation of 10 Stop the Bleed kits and training.

While the game plan moving forward varies by educational institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brickand-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students,” which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “We feel it is important to challenge our students to keep moving academically,” explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships.” Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the

The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a high-quality academic experience even during this time of crisis.” The statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the needs of their families.” The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more,” explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. I’m hopeful we will also be able to use a video conferencing program so that I can interact with my students in a live setting.” Conestoga Valley (CV) schools also enacted measures to move toward online delivery, directing faculty to connect with families via applications such as Zoom, a virtual conferencing application, and establishing office hours to keep communication flowing. Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this time of crisis.” “Neither our teachers nor our students signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality,” Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs.” In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other
educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for inhome technology. Three of Bethany Eaby’s four children attend school in the Manheim Township School District. With the closure of schools in March, suddenly her fifthgrade, third-grade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect,” elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects, and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful,” she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk.” The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. The finished products are then delivered to senior communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities,” explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students.” For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.

Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to respect the purpose of the early opening. Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all in-store pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct

For senior customers who do not wish to come into the store, The Giant Company is now offering UPS mailing of prescriptions. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the local Giant or Martin’s pharmacy. The prescription will arrive in two business days and there will be no shipping charge at this time. The Giant Company continues to offer delivery and pickup through Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. working to expand capacity. Currently, only contactless deliveries are available to all customers in all areas until further notice. The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley faces a record number of wishes waiting to be granted as a result of the recent need to postpone all wishes that involve travel due to the public and medical concerns of COVID-19. As more than 80% of local wishes involve travel or large gatherings, 42 wishes throughout Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley were immediately impacted with additional wishes being impacted every day. The challenging circumstances have inspired Make-A-Wish to think creatively about how to bring hope and joy to Make-AWish children during unpredictable and scary times. On March 20, Make-A-Wish announced Messages of Hope to give supporters and the general public a fun, easy way to help children with critical illnesses without leaving the house. Through Messages of Hope, Make-A-Wish invites members of
the public to spread hope and anticipation by writing, recording, or photographing themselves delivering messages of encouragement for children who are waiting for wishes that have been impacted by COVID-19. Leading up to its Giving Week on Wednesday, April 22, Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley will begin a Wishes Are Waiting video series on its social media channels to highlight local children who are waiting for their wish to come true. Before sharing their messages, participants are asked to consider making a donation at www.wishesarewaiting.com to prepare Make-A-Wish to grant the unprecedented number of pending wishes once normal operations resume. The last step is to post the messages to any social media channel along with the tag @MakeAWishPHL and the hashtag #WishesAreWaiting. Two or more friends should also
be tagged and challenged because the more messages shared, the greater the impact on children and their families. Messages of Hope can also be shared directly on the organization’s posts. The announcement of Messages of Hope comes a little more than a month ahead of the chapter’s first-ever Giving Week beginning on April 22. This virtual event is meant to raise funds for the more than 450 local children with critical illnesses waiting for a wish, a number that is continuing to grow with the COVID-19 outbreak. During Giving Week, some of the messages received on the official Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley social media accounts will be shared publicly.

Penn State Health Seeks Supplies While Penn State Health currently has what it needs to protect its health care workers and care for its patients in response to COVID-19, events are changing rapidly. Penn State Health recognizes that it could experience shortages in the future and has begun accepting drop-off donations of critical supplies from the community. Penn State Health will accept drop-off donations of key supplies from the community-atlarge at three area locations. Those locations are Penn State Health Center, 175 Crystal A Drive, Hershey; Penn State Health St. Joseph Foundation Office (blue building front), 1036 MacArthur Road, Reading; and Penn State Health Medical Group - Lancaster Clinical Lab, 2301 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Penn State Health has plans in place to manage patients with special illnesses while safeguarding patients, hospital visitors, health care workers, and the community. To ensure doctors, nurses and other staff treating COVID-19 patients remain safe and healthy, Penn State Health has distributed personal protective equipment and patient hygiene kits to all clinic and practice sites. In addition, Penn State Health continues to adopt best practices in its ongoing commitment to safety and high-quality care for its communities. While Penn State Health appreciates the community support, residents are reminded to follow the latest guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office about leaving their homes for nonessential travel. Individuals are encouraged to consolidate their essential trips with drop-off activities. For details about what, when, and where to donate, readers may visit https://hmc.pennstate health.org/community.

Sheetz recently announced a new SHcan and Go! feature allowing customers to scan and pay for convenience items through the Sheetz app. Now available at all 600 Sheetz locations, this new feature minimizes interaction in the checkout process in support of social distancing recommendations. The SHcan and Go! feature activates through the Sheetz app when in-store and can be used for convenience items such as beverages and snacks. It is not available for gas, age-restricted items requiring proof of identification, or Sheetz’s Made-to-Order food and Sheetz Brothers coffee items. Made-to-Order and Sheetz Brothers coffee items can continue to be ordered and purchased separately through the app or online 24/7. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Sheetz has instituted several changes including suspending self-serve coffee, selfserve fountain beverages, fresh brewed tea, frozen beverages and milkshakes as well as self-serve bakery items. Sheetz is also encouraging social distancing and has implemented enhanced routine daily cleaning procedures with a focus on high-touch surface areas such as gas pumps, order points, counter tops, checkout lines and door handles.
