The four members went undefeated in a double-elimination competition at the senior Dairy Bowl. As a result, the club will represent Pennsylvania at the National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, S.D. from Monday, June 27, to Friday, July 1. “Our team works really hard to absorb as much information as possible for the competitions,” said Madelynn. “We have a close-knit group that enjoys being together and traveling. I have been really grateful for the opportunity as it has been great preparation for school and my future career.” The event will also feature a silent auction of items, such Lancaster County Junior Holstein Club members (from left) Amber Pownall, as gift baskets, Caroline Arrowsmith, Jacob Bramm, and Madelynn Hoffman will represent homemade jam, Pennsylvania at the National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, S.D. brand-new tools, BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Club adviser Mandy Arrowsmith noted that she and the members are very thankful that Bell & Evans will donate 600 pieces of chicken for the dinner. A price has been set for takeout meals, and attendees are encouraged to make reservations. The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present a silent film, “Sherlock, Jr.,” accompanied by Don Kinnier, a well-known silent film accompanist and organist, at First United Methodist Church, 68 N. Church St., Ephrata, on the church’s Mohler pipe organ. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 22. A romantic comedy, “Sherlock, Jr.” stars Buster Keaton and Kathryn McGuire. The film runs 45 minutes and will be followed by a discussion about playing for silent movies, including what goes into turning the action into music. The public is invited to attend. There is a suggested donation to cover event costs.

To raise funds for its Peru mission, MOPC will host its annual yard sale on Saturday, April 23, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. After 11 a.m., most items will be half price and clothing will be free. There will be furniture, toys, household items, tools, local handmade items, small appliances, clothes, and more. Food, such as barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs, will also be available for purchase. “We have been holding the annual yard sale for over 25 years,” said Daniel. “It’s a good church and community outreach event for us. We invite folks to donate items, or they can rent their own outside space.” MOPC will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2027.

different. Due to travel restrictions, MOPC sent funds, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the nursing staff and medical facilities in Iquitos, the major Peruvian city where past mission teams have stayed during their journeys to and from Tamshiyacu. According to MOPC mission team leader Daniel Henry, there will not be a trip to Peru this year, so the mission team will continue to provide medical supplies and funds for people in Peru to do maintenance projects at the Tamshiyacu church. MOPC began its Peru mission in 2005 in conjunction with Daniel’s brother, Dave Henry, who serves as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City, Mo. Together, the two churches raised funds to build a sister church in Tamshiyacu in 2008. Church members from both Pennsylvania and Missouri travel to Peru every year and stay for one to two weeks. While there, they lead Bible school and work on construction projects at the church and within the village. “Our goal is to spread the Gospel and share the love of Jesus with the folks in the Amazon,” said Daniel. Over the years, the mission teams have completed several projects in Peru, such as doing maintenance on the church, building a playground for special needs children, installing a running water

Softball Team Earns Third Straight Shutout
BY MONA STEINHAUER
“Anna pitched very well,” Miller lauded. “She had good command and we made the plays on a number of grounders and fly balls.” TRACK Solanco’s track teams, in a field of 17 schools, competed in the Black Knight Invitational on Saturday, April 9. The girls finished 8th overall and the boys were 10th. “We had some nice PR’s in not so nice weather,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “Our athletes overcame the weather and surpassed our expectations.” Katie Urbine continued to impress. She won the pole vault, was third in the long jump and finished sixth in the 100. “Her biggest challenge was that all three events were happening at the same time,” noted McDowell. “That was a struggle, especially with the weather, but she overcame it.” Hannah Wood placed in two events, grabbing second in the shot and sixth in the discus. “And we welcomed back Martha Weaver, who threw great for her first time this season,” said McDowell. Noah Baber also had a big day, clearing six feet again for second in the high jump, and adding a third in the long. Also in the jumps, Elijah Reimold was third in the high and sixth in the long and Trent McDowell picked up a
fifth in the triple jump. “We also got a big PR (41-0) from Braden Caldwell in the shot,” McDowell exclaimed. “Our throwers have really shown improvement over the past few weeks.” On the track, the 4x800 relay team of Jimmy Hartigan, Wyatt Tomison, Joey Hartigan and Anthony SolisMorales went under 9:00 and finished in third place. BASEBALL Solanco’s offensive woes continued last week, leading to a 2-0 loss to McCaskey on Monday and a 4-1 defeat at Hempfield Wednesday afternoon, and dropped the Mules to 1-6 overall. “Offensively, we’re hitting the ball hard but our lack of ability to hit the open spots continues to haunt us,” said head coach John Girvin. “Our team goal is no more than five strikeouts in seven innings. We had six so we are putting the ball in play. But we have been snake-bitten on our own field. We cannot find the holes.” After four scoreless innings, McCaskey scored the only run they needed in the top of the fifth. A two out error let the game-winning run slip home. They added an insurance run in the sixth, connecting for two hits with two outs to cap the scoring. “Ty Burger pitched a great game,” said Girvin. “He struck out seven and walked
three. And Sawyer Weyman pitched the last two innings. He has a lot of poise for a sophomore. We could not ask more of our pitchers. And Nate Harnish has been throwing guys out every game and that starts with the pitchers,” he continued. Solanco threatened over the last three innings, putting at least two runners on each frame, but came up empty. “It really could have been a 0-0 game going into the eighth,” said Girvin. “It should have been.” Photo by Bob Diller Brayden Herr, Taryn Britigan rips a double for the Mares in their 15-0 victory at McCaskey on Blake Cheyney and April 11. With a lopsided 15-0 shutout at McCaskey on Monday, April 11 and a hardfought 5-0 result against visiting Hempfield two days later, the softball team collected its fifth straight victory, third straight shutout and fourth shutout overall. Anna Sexton struck out 11 batters and scattered three hits against the Red Tornado. Solanco scored ten runs in the first inning to take control early. Emily Sims and Marlee Haupt were responsible for five of the runs batted in. “They’re a much-improved team,” said head coach Brett Miller, “and they made some plays, but we got the hits when we needed them and took advantage of ten walks.” Solanco grabbed its second crossover win two days later with a six-hit attack against Hempfield. After two scoreless innings, the hosts scored all the runs they needed with a three-spot in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Josie Janssen worked a walk and moved up on a base hit by Sims. Both runners scored on Kendal Janssen’s double. Holly Grube’s single to centerfield scored Janssen before Grube was tagged out at second base. Two innings later they padded their lead with a pair of insurance runs, again scoring with two outs. J. Janssen popped a bunt over the third baseman and scored when Sims crushed a triple down the right field line. K. Janssen then stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch. She scored on a Grube single up the middle. “They changed pitchers for those last two innings, and she threw very hard,” said Miller. “The ball was moving. So, it was nice to see us respond. When your eight and nine (J. Janssen) hitters can contribute offensively, it makes for good results. “This was an important win,” he added. “You always like to beat Hempfield. At times, with three errors, we were generous. Fortunately, they did not capitalize on our mistakes.” Photo by Bob Diller Sexton was strong in the Photo by Bob Diller Solanco shortstop Emily Sims fields a McCaskey ground ball in the Mares’ 15-0 circle, tossing a one-hitter Solanco’s Anna Sexton delivers a pitch to the plate during her 15-0, three-inning win over the host Tornado on April 11. with nine strikeouts. victory over host McCaskey on April 11. for more photos, visit www.townlively.com

Refresh Lancaster from pg 13 and shower trailer lead, noted that a place is needed in Ephrata to deploy on Thursdays. Morales would like to add a second early morning deployment in the city of Lancaster where children could shower prior to school. She would also like to find places in Solanco, Pequea Valley, and East Lampeter to offer the service. The unit offers two private showers to accommodate families and children, along with clean towels and toiletry kits. Women’s hygiene kits, made up by the Lancaster Pilot Club, include encouraging cards, nail files, wipes, mouthwash, lip balm, shampoo, and conditioner. Collaboration To Measure Need The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter will collaborate with the YMCA of the Roses through the ALZ CARES (Community Alliances for Resources, Education and Support) Community Action Plan to assess and meet the growing need for dementia education and support. Through this partnership, the organizations will work together to provide care and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia in York and Lancaster counties through free education programs. The action plan also includes holding an Alzheimer’s community forum to better understand local needs regarding dementia support resources. All feedback generated from the forum will be used to develop community education programs, support groups, and other engagement techniques to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
are welcome. For over 40 years, GMTRC has been offering therapeutic riding lessons and equineassisted therapeutic activities to children and adults with special needs. Clients’ diagnoses vary widely and include Down syndrome, neurological injuries, autism, depression, and anxiety. GMTRC’s therapeutic riding program seeks to aid clients in overcoming some of the challenges associ-
ated with their diagnoses with the help of 12 specially trained horses and ponies. In addition to weekly lesson programming, GMTRC welcomes special groups by appointment. This summer, GMTRC will welcome back Aaron’s Acres campers for specialized programming. GMTRC also recently added Silver Saddles, a four-week program for local seniors that is designed to allow
participants to experience the bond between humans and horses. Silver Saddles caters specifically to individuals age 55 and up looking to enhance physical, intellectual, and personal growth, as well as facilitate positive community connections. GOAL Project will offer “The Jagged Path Towards Full Recovery” on Thursday, April 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom. This program is the third session in the Pathways to Freedom Series. This program will examine the Gorski model recovery as a process of growth and traits. Participants will also learn about bias, both personal and societal, as a barrier to a true person-centered system of care, as well as the natural evolution of a person in recovery as he or she heals emotionally, biologically, mentally and spiritually. Relapse will be discussed as it exists on the timeline of recovery; participants will learn what could be causing relapse and examine the philosophies that guide how people engage with others who relapse. The presenter will be Scott Theurer, director of recovery environments at R3 Recovery Houses in Lancaster. To register, visit www.goal project.org/training. For more information, email mail@goal project.org or call 717-8243310. Attendees can earn two PCB credits.
