Sail Away With “The Pirates Of Penzance” BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Starting Friday, May 7, on-demand streaming of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” by Solanco High School (SHS) will be available for viewers. The show is directed by SHS music teacher Erin Biles, and SHS English teacher John Biles serves as assistant director. “The Pirates of Penzance” is an operetta, so most of the production will be sung.

“We’re recording it in house over three performances,” explained Erin. “There’s nothing like live theater, though, but we do what we need to do to keep everyone safe and still give the kids a great experience.” Tickets can be purchased at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Solanco” with a two-week streaming window. Viewers must watch the show within 48 hours once streaming has begun. See “The Pirates Of Penzance” pg 4

Spring And Summer Fun At SECA BY COURTNEY MENGEL

f you live in the Solanco area, you are probably familiar with the Southern End Community Association (SECA), 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. SECA’s mission is to create recreational opportunities for local residents of southern Lancaster County by providing highvalue programs for children and adults. The organization was founded by residents of southern Lancaster County in 1993 after they purchased SECA’s current property from the American Legion in 1992. On Saturday, April 24, from 8 to 11 a.m., SECA will host its annual Youth Fishing Derby for children age 13 and under. Children will fish in the pond on SECA’s property and compete for cash prizes provided by Southern End Outdoors. Registration is limited, and preregistration is required. Registration will not be available the day of the event. Fishing gear will not be provided. SECA will host its annual plant

“Not every event is for everyone, but we try to get as many events out there as possible ... If there’s something a resident is interested in that we don’t offer, I hope they let me know and maybe we can work something out.” On Saturday, May 29, SECA will host its first Dash and Splash 5K and Kids’ Fun Run. Registration will open at 8 a.m., the Kids’ Fun Run will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 5K will start at 10 a.m. All runners will

be given free pool entry on the day of the event. An award ceremony will take place immediately following the 5K race, and awards will be given to the overall male and female champions and to the top three male and female finishers in the following age groups: 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over. For the past two years, Rick Kerns has served as director of SECA. He said he believes people should attend these upcoming events because he wants to provide as many recreational opportunities as possible to southern Lancaster County. “Not every event is for everyone, but we try to get as many events out there as possible,” he said. “If there’s something a resident is interested in that we don’t offer, I hope they let me know and maybe we can work something out.” To register for an event or for more information, call 717-8060123 or email seca@epix.net.

In 2006, Laura Howell turned her dream of teaching Shakespeare full time into a reality. Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. It was at this time that she noticed how excited students were about Shakespeare and how the language and the plays themselves empowered the students. See Camp WIll pg 7

“The Pirates of Penzance” centers around a group of pirates led by the Pirate King, played by junior Aden Jackson, who prepares to say goodbye to his indentured servant Frederick, played by senior Kendell Beiler. After leaving the pirates and his nursery maid, Ruth, played by senior Emily Herr, Frederick meets sweet Mabel, played by senior Lauren Yoder. Mabel, one of the daughters of Major General Stanley, played by senior Tristan Rush, immediately falls in love with Frederick, but the couple’s nuptials are delayed when the Pirate King and Ruth reveal a paradox that ropes Frederick back into a life of piracy. The second act features a group of police who, under the leadership of the Sergeant of Police, played by junior Elliot Spangler, are afraid of their own shadow.

“We’re presenting the show in a different way this year, so our families who live out of state can watch,” said Herr. “It’s definitely not ideal, especially for the seniors, but this production is something I think the district and our directors are trying to make special for us.” “As seniors, we were so used to live performances, standing ovations, and cast parties,” explained Rush. “Then it all was taken away because of the pandemic.” “I just watched a recording of ‘Hamilton’ the other day, and what’s great about musicals is that if it’s a good musical, it will still be good on video,” added Spangler. “People will still enjoy it.” Questions about the ticketing process can be emailed to musicalticketsales@ solancosd.org.

Some of the cast members talked about their experiences while rehearsing. “Due to certain restrictions, we weren’t able to rehearse together for the first few weeks,” said Herr, “but the musical itself has a nice divide between the daughters, the pirates, and the police. We all rehearsed separately in these three groups, then we put it all together.” “It was hard at first because we didn’t know how well the other groups were doing,” added Jackson. “There was a definite split when we started rehearsing with the entire cast,” said Yoder. “We extended our rehearsals into April, which we normally don’t do when we perform live,” explained Beiler. “We felt somewhat behind at first because we’re not used to this schedule, but we will nail it.”

Urbine Sets New Record, Boys Win Two Meets

Despite a late start to actual competition, Solanco’s track teams are off to a great start. The boys are 2-0 with wins over Elizabethtown (95-55 April 12) and Cocalico (83-67 April 8). And while the girls are still in the hunt for their first win, there were standout performances in their losses to Elizabethtown (93-57) and Cocalico (78-70). “ We had a great first meet against Cocalico,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “Despite covid quarantines that set us back, the athletes worked hard, and it showed. For the majority, this

was their first high school meet, and many were attempting events for the first time.” Elijah Reimold sparked a dominating performance by the Solanco jumpers, leading sweeps in the high, pole vault and triple jump as well as winning the long jump. Trent Henry, who was third in the long, and Trent McDowell followed Reimold in the high jump while Lucas Boyd and Jimmy Morales completed the pole vault sweep. In the triple, it was McDowell and Henry taking second and third. This group secured all but three points in the jumps. Also in the field, Brian Coleman, Lance Workman and Robert Castagna added a sweep in the javelin. Highlighting the events on the track was Ryan Vanover with top times in the 100 and 200 and Anthony Solis winning the mile and taking second in the 800. Freshman Wyatt Tomison stepped up with a win the 3200 and McDowell added seconds in the 110 and 300 hurdles. While the girls earned a sweep in the javelin, it was Katie Urbine’s pole vaulting that highlighted the meet. Urbine, a sophomore, cleared 11-1 to set a new school record. The previous record of 11-0 was by Brook (McCardell) Daly set in 2015. She also won the 100 and was second in the long jump. Leading the javelin sweep was Hannah Wood. Halle Brown was second and placing third in her third event (shot and discus) was Martha Weaver. Also winning was Greta Plechner in the high jump. She was also second in the pole vault. Wrapping up Solanco’s six wins was Christine Wagner in the 3200. The sophomore also joined forces with Weaver, Olivia Singleton and Brown to win the 4x800.

Spring Is Here

The Mules were expecting a close match up with Elizabethtown Monday and came through with points they weren’t expecting. “Winning all three relays was a must and we did that,” said McDowell. “Ian Althoff picked up second in both the 100 and 200 which was huge and a sweep in the shot was unexpected. Shout out to Cole Gladfelter for picking up the third and to Lance Workman with a second in the javelin. The throwers did a great job getting extra points.” Althoff and Aidan Wood teamed with Liam Findley and Josiah Forren to take the 4x400 and with Riley Ford and Vanover in the 4x400. Opening the meet with a win in the 4x800 Tomison, Joe Hardigan, Evan Kline and Findley. Reimold won the high and triple jumps and was second in the pole vault and long jump and Vanover picked up more wins in the 100 and 200. Tomison added a win the mile, Solis took the 3200 and Brian Coleman took the javelin. In addition to the relay sweep, Connor Smith, Braden Caldwell and Gladfelter controlled the shot. Also coming up big was McDowell with seconds in both hurdles and the triple jump. Despite the loss, the girls turned in more outstanding performances. Urbine won four events (100, 200, pole vault and long jump) and Sophia Stoltzfus was tops in the high and triple jumps. Plechner chipped in with seconds in the 300 hurdles, high jump and pole vault and Brown was third in the 400 and 800. BASEBALL The baseball team wrapped up their first run through Section Two with a loss to LampeterStrasburg Friday, April 9 and then topped visiting Elizabethtown 5-2 on Monday, leaving them with a 3-2 Section Two record. The Pioneers, with a 10-hit attack, pushed across three runs in the first inning and never lost the lead in a 6-2 final. Solanco plated both of their runs with two outs in the bottom half on a

Nate Harnish double. They finished with four hits on the day and N. Harnish had two. Tyler Burger and Seth Harnish also contributed. On the hill, Mitchell Moyer and Logan Wagner combined for three strikeouts and five walks. “Logan came on in relief in the second inning and gave up one earned run,” noted Fish. “He did an outstanding job of keeping us in the game.” Despite striking out nine times, the Mules pounded out nine hits, scored three runs in the second and padded their lead with two in the third to take control of the Bears, 5-2 on Monday. Tyler Burger struck out four and walked four in the complete game victory. “Tyler was in total control. He gave up one earned run and only three hits,” said Fish. “Defensively, Avery Jacobsen had another strong game at short and Ethan Clary made a diving catch in the seventh to prevent the game from getting too interesting,” he added. In crossover action Wednesday, the Mules lost a 6-0 no-hitter in six innings. Clary started on the hill and was relieved by Kyle Stively who made his Solanco baseball debut. SOFTBALL With three lopsided victories to start the season, Solanco made the short trip north to Lampeter where the tables turned. Despite scoring a run in the top of the first inning, Solanco gave up ten in the bottom of the second and went on to suffer an 18-1 loss. Emily Sims reached on an error, was bunted to second by Holly Grube and scored on Jade Eshleman’s two out single to left. Becca Foulk’s double in the third was Solanco’s only other hit. The Pioneers opened the second with a leadoff homer and later put together five straight hits, including a three-run homer for a 10-1 lead. They ended the game with a grand slam. Anna Sexton and Marlee Haupt both saw action in the circle. They combined for three strikeouts and six walks. “It was a good learning experi-

Streaming is free to viewers, but donations are welcome. There are some silver linings to Camp Will being virtual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell. “Kids will have incredible educational and performa- Students have attended Camp Will through The People’s Shakespeare Project for several years. tive opportunities.” Howell believes that a lot of students, especially highschoolers, have learned to be afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel Main St., Conestoga that if they put themselves TAKE OUT ONLY out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it - kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it th 3-7 P.M. because there’s power in these words,” said Howell. Luckily, Howell was in a position where she could open a theater dedicated to Shakespeare, so she founded The People’s Shakespeare Project. The theater group started as a college performance company and performed during the summer at Elizabethtown College. After a couple years went by, the group moved to Millersville University and staged plays outside during the summer. The People’s Shakespeare Project has two arms: an educational and a performative. Camp Will falls under the educational arm. Camp Will started in 2008 and was only for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. After the students begged Howell to widen the age group, she gave in and set up two sections: one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers. Due to the pandemic, The People’s Shakespeare Project was completely virtual last year. “We kept the theater going,” explained Howell. “We had a small group of high school students, and Zoom worked well, so we’re doing it again.” The People’s Shakespere Project will offer one session of Camp Will to rising eighth- through 12th-graders from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30. Given the likelihood that many students are tired of Zoom, Howell and her co-workers are redesigning Camp Will in ways that they think will make the camp more palatable online. Students will record an abridged version of “Twelfth Night” within three weeks, and it will stream on

“My story is closely intertwined with my mother’s,” said Jacob Farneth of Quarryville. Jacob took over the mission of his mother Margo to research their family history following her death in 2019. “I have been honored and blessed to take up that mantle and try to step into those shoes,” said Jacob. Jacob inherited all the research his mother had done on their family tree. Before she passed, the two discussed what she had completed, tracing some family members back to the early 1600s, and where he would pick up to move forward. While Jacob and his mother shared an interest in genealogy, he noted that their paths diverge in some areas. “There are different strategies to researching your tree,” he said, noting that his mother wanted to see how far back she could trace her family, while he

advance the tree a little further,” he suggested. “Every day you wait, it gets harder to do this research. It’s easier to go to a living relative and ask them questions. When they’re gone, you lose that.” Jacob said he has used www.ancestry.com intermittently, but he practices social etiquette when approaching possible relatives via social media. “You have to ask permission to dig into family trees,” he said. “You have to ask permission to add data (about someone else to your tree).” He noted that he has sent messages to possible family members asking politely to include them. “You have to be respectful. … you don’t want to bother them, but you want information,” he stated, adding that although Farneth is not a common name, he sometimes comes across potential family members and tries to find a shared ancestor. Jacob encourages others who are interested in finding their own beginnings to follow their curiosity and continue to work to put the puzzle pieces into place, even if the process moves slowly. Finding other family members who are also searching is a bonus. “If you look wide enough, you will probably find family members who will encourage and inspire you and make it a collaborative effort,” he said.

is more interested in the width of the tree and locating living family members. “ We both cared very much about the tree, but we had different priorities,” he explained. He has spent time retracing his mother’s steps in order to connect with her thought process. He specified that the decision on when to add an ancestor to a tree involves a personal philosophy. “The further you go back, there are a lot of assumptions,” he shared, adding that many factors come into play. Often, he noted, the name will be misspelled. “Sometimes names were never written down because people couldn’t write or read,” he said. Jacob is thankful to have found other family members who are also tracing their roots. “It seems there are one in 20 family members who are really interested, and if enough family members are interested in piecing the little trees together, eventually you can connect them,” he said. While noting that internet technology is helpful in bringing together branches to form a larger picture, Jacob does not discount firsthand research. “If you meet a great-aunt at a reunion, ask questions and
