SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Putting Problem-Solving Into Practice By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the Pennsylvania Technology Student Association (PA-TSA) canceled its state conference that had been scheduled for this month, a local student put her problem-solving skills to use. Darby Lewis, a sixth-grader at George A. Smith Middle School, had qualified to attend the conference and compete in the problem-solving event. “It just sounded cool,” Darby said of her interest in her chosen area of competition. During the state contest, Darby and classmate Lily Gavin would have worked together to develop a finite solution to a specific problem provided. The pair had qualified for the state conference by performing well at the regional level. Along with other TSA members, Darby and Lily stayed after
the community with more people unemployed and kids being home from school not getting all of (the) meals (they would at school),” Shannon said. “I work at Quarryville Elementary School, so that’s near and dear. Those families are important to us.” In just one week, Darby had sold enough of her items to purchase $175 worth of food and household products for the food bank. Like her daughter, Shannon is also supporting the community, as she is currently sewing masks. Eventually, Darby expects to do some sewing for the fall, as she wants to join Shannon in selling items at craft shows. Until then, though, she plans to keep sewing and selling the fabric keychains and lip balm holders for as long as her friends are interested. “(Darby) clearly demonstrated her outstanding problem-solving skills and
school one day a week to practice. To help pay for her participation in the conference, Darby had planned to make and sell fabric keychains and lip balm holders. Her mother, Shannon Lewis, explained that when the cancellation was announced, Darby already had the supplies in stock, so she decided to go ahead with the sewing. Darby had requested and received a sewing machine this past Christmas, and between what she learned in her Family and Consumer Sciences class and from her mother, Darby was ready to sew some cute items. Darby was presented with a problem, however. If she sold the keychains and lip balm holders, what would she do with the proceeds? Ultimately, she decided to use the money to buy groceries for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. “We saw that there was a need in

In addition, Keeler announced that a $500 scholarship in Risk’s name will be awarded to a student in the Solanco School District who will major in a business-related field in college or technical school or who plans to operate their own business following high school graduation. Risk’s service to the community includes 20 years on the Solanco School Board. School board members are responsible for important decisions, such as school budgets, personnel matters, curriculum, and the maintenance of school facilities. They are volunteers. “Now that county residents have been ordered to shelter in place, it is more important than ever that every family has somewhere to stay that is warm, dry, and livable,” IMPACT! Missions (IM) founder and executive director Matt Beakes wrote in an email newsletter on March 31. “As this crisis unfolds, IMPACT! Missions has not wavered in its commitment to making a difference in the lives of our Lancaster County neighbors who are struggling with poverty and limited housing.” The IM emergency repair ministry to lowincome homeowners is continuing to operate, albeit with modified protocols. The work crews are averaging two projects a week. These have included building a wheelchair ramp for a woman who needed to come home to avoid being quarantined in a physical rehabilitation facility, dealing with mold remediation and installing new cabinets in a See IMPACT! tuition per student is $12,435 per year. Under typical circumstances, donations and auction purchases help to make quality, Christ-centered education affordable for more students and support the dedicated teachers and staff members at all LMS campuses. Now, financial support is even more important. “We are aware many families are ex periencing financial hardship, so know that even a small donation amount goes a long way to support students and teachers,” King remarked. “Your support now helps provide families a sense of community, Christ-centered love, and support in this time of socialisolation.” LMS students have continued to attend school remotely during the shutdown. Teachers regularly connect with students through a variety of technologies. The Locust Grove campus is located at 2257 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, and serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. It offers Spanish Immersion for elementary school students. The New Danville campus, 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, offers education for students in prekindergarten through fifth grade and features an awardwinning garden and outdoor classroom. The online auction will be hosted by BiddingOwl.com and run from 8 a.m. on Friday, April 24, to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 1. As of April 6, a total of 137 items had been uploaded to the auction program. Specific items of interest include a two-hour kayak rental at Shank’s Mare; admission tickets to the Lancaster Science Factory, Longwood Gardens, a showing of “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound Theatres, and the adventure course at Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center; a Bob Neff Tours gift card; a creek stomp and campfire party at BoxWood Farm in Washington Boro; and a private pool party at Black Rock Retreat. the goal to have them ready to be shown as soon as possible once the situation improves. A significant amount of working capital is tied up in those projects, however, as the sale proceeds are IM’s single largest source of operating revenue. That has put some financial strain on the organization. Another source of uncertainty has been the temporary closure of the IM building products store at 55 Refton Road, Refton. The store was closed to the public in mid-March in compliance with state directives. Ironically, one of IM’s goals for 2020 was to expand the store’s operating hours from two days to three. Having to go in the opposite direction has resulted in a loss of about $2,500 in revenue every week. Community support has been integral to IM’s ongoing work in Lancaster County. The

27 counties, will receive a portion of the donation. The charitable food network continues to ramp up efforts to meet the increasing need, but this crisis response has also resulted in a significant financial burden for the food banks in procuring additional food, supplies and transportation. Food banks have urgently relied upon the generosity of donors to support these costs, which include supplies to ensure the health and safety of their employees, volunteers and the clients they serve. Furthermore, the food banks
have continued to see a rise in the cost of food from manufacturers. The need for donors will continue as food banks anticipate the crisis response may last for months. The Feeding Pennsylvania funding is the largest single contribution Pennsylvania Skill has made. Through its charitable giving, the organization regularly donates to community organizations, including food banks, volunteer fire departments and social service organizations. Feeding Pennsylvania is a partnership formed among Pennsylvania’s Feeding America
member food banks. Collective efforts promote and aid members in securing food and other resources to reduce hunger and food insecurity for their communities across Pennsylvania while also providing a shared voice on the issues of hunger and food access. Member food banks serve nearly 2 million people annually by distributing more than 160 million pounds of food through a network of more than 2,600 agencies. For more information about Feeding Pennsylvania, readers may visit www.feeding pa.org.

In December last year, Melanie Underhill, a four-year veteran of single parenting, announced that she had created Single Moms, a support group for single mothers. The group started out meeting in person once a month at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, but with the sudden changes to everyday life recently, meetings have been augmented. “I am holding our single moms support group online now every Friday on Zoom,” Underhill said. “The response … has been incredible. We are meant for community, and the moms are finding support and validation sharing their stories and struggles with those who understand fully. It’s also wonderful to see friendships form and the sharing of child care, resources and information.” The formation of Single Moms could not have come at a more crucial time, Underhill noted. “In these uncertain times, single parents may feel more isolated and alone than ever,” Underhill explained. “Fear of losing
their job or income may plague their thoughts, and limited food, basic necessities, child care, and emotional support may mount up to overwhelming anxiety. Often, too, a stressful event may trigger PTSD or bring up past trauma.” Parenting is difficult, but doing it alone when social and practical supports are no longer available can be especially challenging. Underhill offered some encouragement to single parents, saying, “Know that you are strong and resilient, having faced difficult times before and emerging wiser yet.” Taking care of one’s self can help parents stay strong, Underhill said. She noted that catching up on sleep (if children allow it, that is), exercising, and eating as well as possible are important. Parents can also find a few minutes each day to stop and reflect and then make a plan for the following day. Establishing a daily routine is helpful in eliminating surprises, Underhill suggested. She also recommended taking a

free class from online learning institutions and forming a child care co-op with other families in the neighborhood. Even with social distancing in place, there are ways that individuals can support single parents. “First and foremost, reach out to check in,” Underhill said. “Offer encouragement, support, and validation. Lack of a partner to bounce ideas off of and to dispel anxiety can further the feelings of isolation.” Practical ways to support a single parent including making a meal or leaving a bag of groceries on their doorstep, dropping off books or an activity bag for the children to do at home, and researching available benefits, programs, and aid that single parents may qualify for during this time. Underhill is working on a housing share program to help to reduce the housing need in the community. Her idea is to connect single mothers with each other so that two single mothers and their children can share one home. “This helps moms afford a

The annual Susquehanna Litho Club Student Night took place on Feb. 27 at the Lancaster County Career and Technology (LCCTC) Brownstown campus. Isabel Vreeland (left) watched Adrianna Wright as Adrianna manipulated Isabel’s photo into Pop Art. Both are visual communications students at LCCTC. students and former students who were now working in the industry, sharing their professional pathways and advice for career success. She added that the Susquehanna Litho Club has ties to LCCTC. Two members of its board of directors are instructors at the center, including Randy Hess, Introduction to Visual Communications, and Dan McCauley, Digital Design and Print Media, both at the Brownstown campus. Another Susquehanna Litho Club board member, Mike Brady, explained that Litho Club events and the Student Night in particular is a look forward into the future of visual communications and an effort to invest in the next generation of printers, binders, digital designers, photographers, and anyone in visual communications. The Susquehanna Litho Club is a social and philanthropic organization, established in 1959, that works to create awareness of the printing and visual communications industry in the region. The club organizes several businesssponsored events throughout the year that range from fundraisers at local sports franchises to industry tours, networking sessions, and student nights. During the student night events, students from schools and career and technology centers from around the area are sponsored by participating businesses.

The annual Susquehanna Litho Club Student Night took place on Feb. 27 at the Lancaster County Career and Technology (LCCTC) Brownstown campus. The Litho Club’s Student Night is one of the organization’s marquee events, this year drawing more than 150 students and business representatives from counties in the southcentral Pennsylvania region and into Maryland. Attendees included students from Columbia County. With the flare of a flash strobe and the whirr of a camera shutter, Isabel Vreeland’s head-and-shoulders photograph was taken and sent to a waiting LCCTC visual communications student. For the next several minutes, Adrianna Wright, an LCCTC visual arts student from Garden Spot, processed, filtered, recomposed, and otherwise tweaked into a colorful, Pop Art comic version of Vreeland’s portrait. Vreeland’s portrait and several other visual communications activity centers were featured during the event. LCCTC visual communications programs presented various activities, including screen printing and laser etching, Photoshop work, html website coding and website creation, photo portraiture, and more. This year’s event included a tour of the Standard Group, a print management and marketing logistics company in Lititz; dinner; and a panel discussion featuring current visual communications

Farm Survey Deadline Extended The deadline for farmers in Lancaster and York counties to respond to a survey documenting conservation practices installed on their farms has been extended by a month, to Friday, May 1, due to challenges related to COVID-19. The survey was mailed to farmers in these counties in late February. The Penn State Survey Research Center is continuing its operations and is able to process returns and answer questions farmers may have. Once the survey is complete, responses will be analyzed by College of Agricultural Sciences researchers, and cumulative results will be provided to Pennsylvania’s Chesapeake Bay Office to document the practices farmers have adopted to conserve soil and water and to protect water quality. Responses will be completely confidential and never will be associated with a farmer’s name or location. Questions about the survey can be directed to Matt Royer at mroyer@psu.edu. For more information about the survey or to complete it online, readers may visit http://src. survey.psu.edu/farmbmp.
