Pet Pantry Purchases Its “Furever” Home BY COURTNEY MENGEL
The Crescendo Choir will perform a spring concert to benefit Celebrate Recovery.
Celebrating Music, Celebrating Recovery BY COURTNEY MENGEL
n April 2, the parking lot at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren was filled with vans, trucks, and sedans as people made their way inside for a homecooked meal. The Southern Lancaster County Community Choirs (SLCCC) organization was hosting its annual dinner and concert fundraiser, which featured hamloaf, macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, green beans, applesauce, dinner rolls, and dessert served buffetstyle. After people’s bellies were full, their ears were graced with the sound of 36 voices from the SLCCC Crescendo Choir. The choir performed a variety of songs, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Africa,” “Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home?” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”
“I’m excited to see how our community has come together and brought music back to life again, and even if they’re not up there on stage, it’s great to see the community supporting it,” stated Hess. The Crescendo Choir will perform a spring concert at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, on Sunday, May 15, at 4 p.m. The concert will be free to the public, but donations will be accepted and given to Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery program for individuals experiencing addiction, trauma, and more. A group from Celebrate Recovery meets at Providence Church, which is where Crescendo Choir rehearses on Monday nights. As a result, SLCCC has become aware of this organization’s mission. If individuals show their spring concert programs to staff at
Son’s Ice Cream, 319 W. State St., Quarryville, then Son’s will donate 15% of these customers’ proceeds to Celebrate Recovery. “Providence Church is very generous; they have never charged us for anything, so this is just a way for us to give back to a mission that the church is trying to support,” explained Hess. Auditions for the Crescendo Choir are held twice a year. Interested singers are asked to come to auditions with a prepared song to be performed a capella, or without accompaniment. At the audition, prospective members will be asked to sing through several vocal exercises so that SLCCC members can evaluate the individual’s accuracy of pitch, depth of range, and ability to read music. Those interested in auditioning can email slcchoirs@outlook.com.

“This year has been awesome,” said Crescendo Choir director Rebecca Hess. “We have more choir members this year than we’ve ever had. My favorite part is just getting up in front of that group, pushing them to sing more and better than they think that they can.” The Crescendo Choir consists of singers from the Solanco community and beyond who have been rehearsing together since midSeptember. The choir is a program that exists under the umbrella of SLCCC, a nonprofit focused on providing quality music experiences and education to singers of all ages. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SLCCC went a year without rehearsing and performing. The annual dinner and concert fundraiser is the only event where the organization collects money for itself.
The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County started in 2011 as an animal food pantry that operated out of CEO Melody Sanders’ living room. As of March 2, the Pet Pantry now owns its “furever” home. The organization’s mission is to meet the community’s need fo r a f fo r d a b l e a n i m a l c a r e , which the Pet Pantry aims to accomplish through its three pillars: feed, fix, and rescue. Through its food program, the Pet Pantry serves about 250 local families by providing an average of more than 70,000 pounds of animal food every year. These families must meet certain requirements that show they are taking responsibility of their animal by having them spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and, for dogs, licensed.

The Lock Haven University (LHU) women’s track and field team turned in another strong effort at the Bison Outdoor Classic meet hosted by Bucknell University on April 15 and 16. The Bald Eagles’ individual efforts allowed them to hit several Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship qualifying marks and PSAC top-five marks. Standout distance runner Morgan Perry, a Solanco alumna from Quarryville, highlighted the action on night one with her time of 17 minutes, 37.48 seconds in the 5,000-meter run. Perry picked her way through the field in the waning laps of the race to run a PSAC No. 2 mark and the fourthfastest time in LHU history. On April 9, LHU hosted the Elliston Early Bird Open,

After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the annual Herb and Garden Faire at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road, off Oregon Pike/Route 272, Lancaster, will return from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7. The event will take place rain or shine on the grounds of the museum. In preparation for the event, the Landis Valley Heirloom Seed Project and its volunteers have planted and transplanted thousands of heirloom vegetable and perennial seeds and seedlings. These plants will be available for sale to gardeners during the Faire. Visitors will be able to purchase from a wide assortment of vendors selling berry bushes, fruit trees, native shrubs and perennials, day lilies, heirloom vegetables, and more. In addition to plants and garden treasures, visitors may peruse among vendors selling jewelry, honey, beeswax products, wooden crafts, and textiles. For added convenience, a plant-sitting stand overseen by museum staff and volunteers will allow shoppers to free up their arms while they move about the village and will also allow visitors to dine in the picnic grove among food vendors. Tickets to the event, plus a full listing of vendors, can be found at www.landis valleymuseum.org.

Pet Pantry from pg 1 Additionally, the organization offers low-cost veterinary services for dogs and cats. There is also a trap, neuter, and return (TNR) program through which feral cats are captured in a humane trap, brought into the Pet Pantry, spayed or neutered, then released where they were found. The organization also rescues animals and puts them up for adoption. Cats are
housed on the property while dogs are fostered until adopted. According to development director Lindsay High, studies have shown that foster-based dog programs are better for a dog’s mental wellness. Individuals who foster the dogs get insight into the animal’s in-house behaviors and preferences, which is information unattainable in a shelter situation. See Pet Pantry pg 5

“Our ultimate goal is to meet the need,” said Sanders. “We have redefined what it means to provide accessible, equitable animal welfare services to families throughout our community. When we founded the organization, we
knew the need was great and each year since we have worked tirelessly to be a trusted resource in our community.” Every year the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County provides homes for an average of 400 rescued animals, serves 1,000
feral cat TNR surgeries, and offers over $250,000 in veterinary care. After bouncing around locations as the organization grew, the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County moved to its current location, 26 Millersville Road,
Lancaster, in 2014. Like cats, the building itself has had many lives. It was first a residential home, then it became a police station, changed into a real estate office, and currently accommodates the Pet Pantry. Due to the intended purpose of the structure, it is not ideal for the organization’s needs. High noted that the location has an odd layout with several ineffective spaces, but by purchasing the property, the organization can customize the space to fit its needs. The surgical wing will be the first area renovated, which will provide the organization with the opportunity to expand veterinary services and bolster animal care. “We are most excited to be able to secure the future for animals in our community, so by buying the building, we will be here forever, and our services will be accessible to more community members,” stated High. To holistically meet the community’s need for animal care services, the organization plans to provide a free vaccine clinic this summer, a 100-cat TNR clinic this fall, and a holiday pet food drive in the winter. Volunteer and foster opportunities are available. To learn more, visit www.petpantrylc.org.

Track Teams Battle Lampeter-Strasburg
BY MONA STEINHAUER
The track teams battled cold and windy conditions last Tuesday, April 19 when they hosted Lampeter-Strasburg for a Section Two showdown. Despite giving up 13 first place finishes, the Mules fell just three points behind the Pioneers, 72-69, with just the pole vault competition left. That portion of the meet will play out on Friday. Highlights included the field events and a sweep in the high jump (Noah Baber, Elijah Reimold, Trenten Henry) and the shot put (Braden Caldwell, Connor Smith, and John Sankus). The Mules also finished second and third in the long, and triple jumps and all three throwing events. Trent McDowell, who was second in the triple and 300 hurdles, posted a 15.9 to win the 110 highs. Solanco’s 4x100 relay team (Johnny Morales, Josiah Forren, Michael Banguna and Riley Ford) secured a second track win. Anthony Solis-Morales added seconds in the mile and 3200 and Ford was second in the 100- and 200meter dashes. “We moved Johnny to the 4x100 at the last minute and he helped us with the win,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “Nick Defrancesco shows great improvement and steps to the plate every time and Connor Smith had a great meet placing in the shot and discus (2nd) and javelin (3rd).” The girls’ team put forth a
strong effort but could not match the Pioneers depth and fell behind 86-55 (without the pole vault). Hannah Wood led the scoring with top throws in the shot and discus and was second in the javelin. Emma Baxter added a PR in the 3200 for first as did Olivia Oravitz in the 200 while Emily Powl won the 800 and Emma Housekeeper edged Jaclyn Martin by 2/100th of second. She finished third in the 100 behind Katie Urbine. Predictions can sometimes fall to the wayside. Like the girls’ track team for instance. Expected to lose to Elizabethtown by at least nine points on Thursday, April 14, the girls battled and came within a point of victory, falling 75.5 - 74.5. “The girls had a great meet,” said McDowell. “I expected us to lose by nine, but they stepped up and almost won.” Urbine earned four wins on the day, taking the pole vault (11-0), long jump and, competing for the first time in the triple jump, won that event. She also posted the top time in the 100. Wood added a throwing sweep with teammate Weaver following with three second place efforts. Christine Wagner added the top 3200 time with a personal record, Halle Brown took the 300 hurdles and Emma Housekeeper, who was second in the 200 and third in the 100, took the open 400 by four seconds. The boys’ team had an easier time, doubling up Etown in points, 100-50. Elijah Reimold led the way with

three jumping wins. He led sweeps in the triple (Trent McDowell, Noah Barber), and high jump (Baber, T Henry) and also won the long. The Mules also swept the javelin (Connor Smith, Brian Coleman, J Kaphart) and won the shot (John Sankus PR). Anthony Solis-Morales sparked the action on the track with top times in the mile and 800m runs. Wyatt Tomison ran away with the 3200, Riley Ford took the 100, McDowell claimed the 110 hurdles and freshman Garrett Grove led in the 300 hurdles. “The distance boys had the highest points and really pulled the meet ahead for us,” said McDowell. SOFTBALL In a key Section Two clash Thursday, April 14, Solanco’s slow start proved costly as Lampeter-Strasburg, the reigning Class 5A state champs, took advantage of two first inning errors, and added some timely hitting to jump out to a 5-0 lead that sparked an 8-3 Pioneer victory. It was Solanco’s first loss of the season. “We played six innings,” said head coach Brett Miller. “Unfortunately, it’s a seveninning game.” A walk, a one out error and a hit batter loaded the bags early. Kara Scranton added a two run double and Gabby photo by Mona Steinhauer Hiles smacked a liner off Anna In L-L League action against Lampeter-Strasburg last Tuesday, Sexton in the circle that plated April 19, at Solanco, Trent McDowell runs away from the field in a third run. pitch scored two more. Solanco got one back in the bottom half when Becca Foulk’s triple pushed in Emily Sims, who reached on a base hit but Keiva Middleton’s solo homer in the fifth pushed Lampeter’s lead to five. Both teams traded a pair of runs in the seventh. With two outs, the Pioneers collected three straight hits to cap their scoring while a Sims’ liner to center field plated Sexton (single) and Tara Britigan (walk). Sexton fanned 10 batters as did Lampeter’s Keiva Middleton and both walked one. Middleton, however, scattered six hits to Sexton’s ten. For the second game in a row, a slow start proved fatal. Solanco gave up five runs in the first inning and never regained the lead in a 15-12 slugfest at Warwick last Wednesday. “The pitchers struggled to locate the strike zone and a slugfest broke out,” said Miller. “You get that when pitchers struggle to find the zone. It’s kinda taken out of our hands.” The two teams combined for 40 hits and seven errors. Solanco cut the lead to 10-9 in the top of the fifth but could get no closer. Holly Grube and Foulk combined for five RBI’s and three hits. Britigan and J. Janssen each finished with three hits while Marlee Haupt and Sexton added two each. “Marlee came in to pitch the fourth,” noted Miller. “It’s
the first time she’s pitched this year and she had the same experience in locating the strike zone. “There are no easy games,” he added. “We have to come back and play better.” BASEBALL The baseball team’s unlucky streak continued in Thursday’s (April 14) loss to visiting Spring Grove. Tied at 3-3 heading in to the seventh inning, the visitors pulled out a 6-3 victory with a threespot. They out-hit the Mules 11-7 and took advantage of
five errors. “We’re looking forward to the second half of the season,” said head coach John Girvin. “We’re moving some people around and making some changes that we’re hoping will make a difference. Spring Grove took the early lead, scoring once in the first inning and twice in the fourth. The Mules got going in the fifth with Brayden Herr’s run scoring hit and added two more in the sixth courtesy of Dillon Dean’s two run homer, setting the stage for a clutch seventh inning. Owen Underwood, Kaden Strong, Kody Moyer and Nate Harnish also contributed to Solanco’s seven-hit offense. Spring Grove doubled that amount. Strong gave up six hits and four runs in four innings pitched, striking out two and walking one. Harnish (1W, 1K), Weston Beiler (1W) and Austin Wenger also saw action on the hill. “Our pitchers have done a great job this year,” said Girvin. Solanco committed five errors and gave up 11 hits in a 15-1, six inning loss to Warwick last Wednesday. Harsh went 3-3 at the plate with one RBI.

Flag-in Day Will Honor Veterans A Flag-in Day will take place at the Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, and will continue on Sunday, May 1, if needed. The event will honor over 1,200 veterans buried in the Lancaster Cemetery. Volunteers are needed to help at the event. Volunteers will place flags at each veterans grave, place over 500 new grave markers,
and reposition older markers to meet cemetery standards for placement. Volunteers will be asked to take photographs of the stone, marker, and flag once placed and to share these digitally with the cemetery. The purpose of this effort is to honor each U.S. veteran interred at the cementary, provide photographic records for families and for future repair projects, and to record exact lot mapping for future
Flag-in Flag-out days. All participants will be asked to read and sign a release the day of the event. Volunteers should consider bringing the following items to the event: a clipboard and pen or pencil, sturdy shoes, a camera with an SD card or a cell phone with a camera and Google or Amazon Prime access to share photos, snacks or a lunch and beverages, and a
wagon or cart to move and carry markers. For more information, contact Maurene Leary at 717885-6312 or maurenec@ comcast.net. The event is being hosted by Red Rose Blue Star Moms PA202; the Donegal-Witness Tree Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and the George Ross Society, Children of the American Revolution.

As the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary, students across the state are invited to participate in the historic occasion by participating in an essay and coloring contest. Both contests are free and open to Pennsylvania students, including those in public, private, charter, cybercharter, or home school. The deadline for entries is Friday, May 6. The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. After printing the cartoon judge cutouts, students can choose which judge they want to color and design using their creativity as their guide. The essay contest is open to all students in grades three through 12, with essays being judged on creativity, overall quality, and adherence to the questions. For grades three through five, the question is “ Why is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court important?” For grades six through 12, the question is “Which Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice inspires you and why?” Students and parents are encouraged to submit photo entries on Twitter by tagging @PACourts and using #Supreme300 or by mail following the instructions outlined below. To submit an essay entry or to learn where to mail it, email communicationsoffice @pacourts.us. Entries in both contests will be judged by Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices, along with members of the Supreme Court 300th Celebration Committee. Winners will be announced and recognized by the court during its 300th anniversary celebration in May. To access information about the coloring contest, visit https://bit.ly/PAcourts coloringcontest. For details on the essay contest, visit https://bit.ly/PAcourtsessay contest.
