In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

“My story is closely intertwined with my mother’s,” said Jacob Farneth of Quarryville. Jacob took over the mission of his mother Margo to research their family history following her death in 2019. “I have been honored and blessed to take up that mantle and try to step into those shoes,” said Jacob. Jacob inherited all the research his mother had done on their family tree. Before she passed, the two discussed what she had completed, tracing some family members back to the early 1600s, and where he would pick up to move forward. While Jacob and his mother shared an interest in genealogy, he noted that their paths diverge in some areas. “There are different strategies to researching your tree,” he said, noting that his mother wanted to see how far back she could trace her family, while he is more interested in the width of the tree and locating living family members. “We both cared very much about the tree, but we had different priorities,” he explained. He has spent time retracing his mother’s steps in order to connect with her thought process. He specified that the decision on when to add an ancestor to a tree involves a personal philosophy. “The further you go back, there are a lot of assumptions,” he shared, adding that many factors come into play. Often, he noted, the name will be misspelled. “Sometimes names

were never written down because people couldn’t write or read,” he said. Jacob is thankful to have found other family members who are also tracing their roots. “It seems there are one in 20 family members who are really interested, and if enough family members are interested in piecing the little trees together, eventually you can connect them,” he said. While noting that internet technology is helpful in bringing together branches to form a larger picture, Jacob does not discount first-hand research. “If you meet a great-aunt at a reunion, ask questions and advance the tree a little further,” he suggested. “Every day you wait, it gets harder to do this research. It’s easier to go to a living relative and ask them questions. When they’re gone, you lose that.” Jacob said he has used www.ancestry.com intermittently, but he practices social etiquette when approaching possible relatives via social media. “You have to ask permission to dig into family trees,” he said. “You have to ask permission to add data (about someone else to your tree).” He noted that he has sent messages to possible family members asking politely to include them. “You have to be respectful. … you don’t want to bother them, but you want information,” he stated, adding that although Farneth is not a common name, he sometimes comes across potential family members and tries to find a shared ancestor. Jacob encourages others who are interested in finding their own beginnings to follow their curiosity and continue to work to put the puzzle pieces into place, even if the process moves slowly. Finding other family members who are also searching is a bonus. “If you look wide enough, you will probably find family members who will encourage and inspire you and make it a collaborative effort,” he said.

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful,

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the con-

Last year’s event was a scaleddown convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the

Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with lifethreatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wish convoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”
Elected officials across the commonwealth have joined together to promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes. On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense of themselves and their families to serve the general public. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus. “The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.” See Bells pg 6

Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction. “Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of not interacting with anyone, and that’s not good,” he said. “This gives everyone a chance to realize we’re all in this together.” Event planning will be local. Malone encourages each municipality to determine whom they want to honor, how they want to honor them, and where they want to honor them. “We know that these workers are struggling and taking risks to help others,” stated Malone. “These people are the reason we’re still functioning as well as we are.”

For this exhibit, participants were asked to create artwork representing their favorite subjects and locations in Lancaster County. There are works representing all areas of the county, with a range of mediums and styles. Many artists chose local landmarks such as the Hans Herr House, Pinnacle Overlook, and Root’s Market. The exhibit features a large number of professional award-winning artists, as well as those pursuing art as a hobby. A few of the artists participating are Carol Herr, LCAA president Carol Dale, Susan Bloomfield, Dot Stepenaski, Judy W. Smith and Karen Frattali. In addition to the adult show in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery, the Steinmetz Gallery will feature a “Children’s Art Quilt” and a “Teen’s Art Quilt.” Children age 6 and older and teens were invited to submit works for these shows. Numerous awards will be given. The judge for the show is plein air artist Marita Hines. Those attending the exhibit will have the opportunity to vote for People’s Choice Awards. There will also be a Purchase Award for the town or township that is represented by the most pieces of artwork. Artwork can be viewed in person at the galleries or at www.lcaaonline.org or the “Lancaster County Art Association” Facebook page. Community members may purchase pieces of artwork, which are 5 by 7 inches in size and include an 8-by-10inch acid-free mat. Proceeds will benefit the LCAA’s general fund and help the organization recoup funds lost during the past year due to the pandemic. The LCAA is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. For details, call the LCAA at 717-687-7061.

palatable online. Students will record an abridged version of “Twelfth Night” within three weeks, and it will stream on YouTube with every actor tuning in via Zoom on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. The People’s Shakespeare Project has executed three virtual plays, all of which can be seen on its YouTube channel. Streaming is free to viewers, but donations are welcome. There are some silver linings to Camp Will being virtual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell. “Kids will have incredible educational and performative opportunities.” Howell believes that a lot of students, especially highschoolers, have learned to be afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel that if they put themselves out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it - kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it because there’s power in these words,” said Howell. In 2006, Laura Howell turned her dream of teaching Shakespeare full time into a reality. Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. It was at this time that she noticed how excited students were about Shakespeare and how the language and the plays themselves empowered the students. Luckily, Howell was in a position where she could open a theater dedicated to Shakespeare, so she founded The People’s Shakespeare Project. The theater group started as a college performance company and performed during the summer at Elizabethtown College. After a couple years went by, the group moved to Millersville University and staged plays outside during the summer. The People’s Shakespeare Project has two arms: an educational and a performative. Camp Will falls under the educational arm. Camp Will started in 2008 and was only for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. After the students begged Howell to widen the age group, she gave in and set up two sections: one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers. Due to the pandemic, The People’s Shakespeare Project was completely virtual last year. “ We kept the theater going,” explained Howell. “We had a small group of high school students, and Zoom worked well, so we’re doing it again.” The People’s Shakespere Project will offer one session of Camp Will to rising eighththrough 12th-graders from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30. Given the likelihood that many students are tired of Zoom, Howell and her coworkers are redesigning Camp Will in ways that they think will make the camp more

Manor Township has announced that it will host the annual Turkey Hill Country Classic on Saturday, May 1, at the Central Manor Church of God, 387 Penn St., Washington Boro. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Manor Township was forced to cancel the races last year. In February of this year, however, the township notified the community that it plans to host the event. As a result of government guidelines, the event will look different this year. It will still consist of three running races: a half marathon starting at 7 a.m., a 10K starting at 9 a.m., and a 5K starting at 9:30 a.m. There will be portable toilets, and free water will be offered to runners. This will be an in-person, rain-or-shine event, and will give the community a chance to have fun and enjoy their run, said J. Ryan Strohecker, Manor Township manager. He added that the township is doing everything it can to make the Country Classic happen this year and return to normal in the future. Preregistration is open and can be completed by visiting http://manor township.net and clicking on “Turkey Hill Country Classic Registration.” Preregistrants must pick up their race number and T-shirt (while supplies last) prior to the race. These items can only be picked up at the Manor Township offices located at 950 West Fairway Drive. If preregistrants do not pick up these items, they will need to fully register again and pay as a same-day registrant on the day of the race. On the day of the race, runners will not have to check in. Same-day registration will be held near the front doors of the church and will open one hour prior to the start of
